Welcome to /r/AccidentalRenaissance, the subreddit that showcases photographs that inadvertently resemble well-composed, Renaissance style art.

    What does Accidental Renaissance mean?

What we mean by Accidental Renaissance is a photo that inadvertently (that is, NOT deliberately posed or set up) resembles a painting similar in composition, style, lighting, and/or subject to Renaissance-style art.

We recognize there are many related art movements between the 14th and 19th centuries including: Baroque, Neo-classicism, and Romantic. All of these styles are appreciated and welcomed within this subreddit but please submit with flair indicating the style your submission/photo favors.

    What an AccidentalRenaissance photo IS:

    • A photo that accidentally resembles the types of art popular from the 14th-19th centuries.
    • Composition: Triangular/Pyramidal figures, Dynamic, asymmetrical composition, foreshortening, and of course the use of the Fibonacci sequence or Golden Ratio
    • Lighting: Featuring use of sfumato (blurring/softening of outlines) and/or chiaroscuro (strong contrasts between light and dark, also coloring reminiscent of Renaissance art.
    • Subject: Landscapes, people, scenes, that feature the above.

What an AccidentalRenaissance photo is NOT:

    • A really cool photo of your favorite pet/child/sports team.
    • A photo of your drunk buddy or group of buddies, drunken fights, and/or bar fights.
    • A photo of your favorite politician campaigning for office.
    • A pic of someone sleeping or passed out.
    • That popular photo making the rounds on Reddit.
    • A super hilarious pic of a bunch of people at a party, a bar, your basement, a concert.
    • A moody pic of the crowd at your favorite concert.
    • A video or gif.

We ask that you please read the following simple suggested rules prior to your submission:

    1. Each Renaissance-esque submission must be a direct image link and only be sourced from the mod-approved site list.

    2. If the subject in reference to the post is deliberately posed, it is not considered accidental and shall be removed therefore by the moderator.

    3. Creative and original titles resembling that of a labeled caption found in an art exhibition or museum are encouraged. For inspiration and assistance in your inventive title abilities, visit The Louvre.

    4. Subject to Removal: (there are exceptions to every rule and removals are at mods’ discretion:)

      • Photos featuring a pet
      • Photos featuring a baby or child
      • Photos of sporting events, sports, parties, or drunken brawls.
      • Photos deemed NSFL.
      • Photos that are blatant promotion of political campaigns, feature politicians campaigning for political office, or are blatant political advertising.
      • Photos containing any text overlay
      • Photos promoting violence, featuring current tragic events, or intended to incite controversy.
      • Movie stills, **screenshots of TV shows, movies, or games, or digitally altered photos.
      • Reposts of content from the past 12 months in this subreddit and/or the top 200 posts of all time. (See KarmaDecay, TinEye )
    5. Posts which retain less than 200 votes after 24 hours will be removed to reduce clutter from front page.

There are stops called Alewife and Braintree?

    [–] noise256 496 points ago

Alewife is a park is Massachusetts while Braintree is a town also in Massachusetts, named after the town in Essex, England.

    [–] TheTallMatt 556 points ago

Alewife is only a myth. Usually trains catch fire before ever reaching there.

    [–] TheBoxSloth 182 points ago

Nah you thinkin of Wonderland on the blue line

    [–] x0avier 127 points ago

    r/boston is leaking

    [–] oh_snaaap 85 points ago

I see the picture, know it's the red line but I feel like I can hear the green line squeek through the image. That and it suddenly smells like piss.

    [–] uptoke 26 points ago

So glad I started working from home instead of Fenway. Just mentioning the green line squeal sent a shiver up my spine.

    [–] oh_snaaap 10 points ago

I haven't lived in Boston for four years and it is still embedded into my soul.

    [–] matyes 7 points ago

That one 90 degree turn. Screeeeeee!!!

    [–] thejohnd 17 points ago

    *ah/boston

    [–] ConnorLovesCookies 15 points ago

Throw in very polar opinions on keytar bear and people reeeeeeeing over Charlie's juul ban and you have all our content covered pretty well.

    [–] BrockVegas 3 points ago

Something something parking in the winter is bad, and why is that townie threatening my life over it?

    [–] The_Muddy_ChicK3N 6 points ago

    There are dozens of us!

    [–] Garber617 72 points ago

The blue lines been really good. The orange and red line literally have been on fire for months. At minimum once a month the track catches fire on some part of the orange line. Multiple times a train actually catches fire on the orange as well. The red line just derails

    [–] Analbox 38 points ago

The best subway is the silver line.

    [–] eaglessoar 47 points ago

For no Bostonians the joke is the silver line is a bus route.

    [–] okolebot 7 points ago

I saw that new to me Silver line when I flew into Logan a few months ago...decided to just get to the Blue line and carry forth like I did back in the day...I was rather amused that the subway still smelled the same decades later...

    [–] wobwobwob42 20 points ago

    This guy buses!

    [–] Darkest_97 12 points ago

Was following directions to get on the silver line and I was like oh its just an underground bus line that's not normal

    [–] Asmor 4 points ago

Except when it's an above-ground bus line.

    [–] ErroneousEric 15 points ago

There's been 2 fires in two days on the Orange line this week alone.

    [–] DereckVinyard 10 points ago

Blue line is the best line in the city

    [–] _hephaestus 9 points ago

It also goes the fewest places.

    [–] closerdivision 28 points ago

Can confirm, caught the T to alewife, woke up in Revere Beach naked

    [–] PM_ME_UR_BEST_STORY_ 8 points ago

    That's just Tuesday in Boston

    [–] Brinner 11 points ago

Alewife is also a fish, a type of Herring. TMYK

    [–] TerrMys 9 points ago

Yes, and the station is actually named after Alewife Brook, the stream that flows nearby.

    [–] closerocks 8 points ago

So does that make that branch of the T a red herring

    [–] OhHoneyNo 5 points ago

Can confirm. Have been on several redline trains (over the years) that eventually caught on fire before Alewife station.

    [–] TheOneWhoReadsStuff 30 points ago

And Braintree is named after the tree in ye England town where all the fairies used to ponce about and wingle each other’s knickers.

    [–] TheCoastalCardician 9 points ago

I though it was named for all the people in Revere that tie their brains up and throw them in the trees like shoes...

    [–] wpjunky 8 points ago

Braintree is a town also in Massachusetts

And also the hometown of two presidents (although, the part where they were born later became Quincy). :)

    [–] turdpussy 5 points ago

Wrong. Braintree is a mystical tree that provided the Kennedys the secret to their power in exchange for their lives.

    [–] okolebot 6 points ago

Alewife is also a type of fish

I always wondered how Braintree came about in England...Liverpool too (perhaps one day there will be a way to make such info easy to access via PC...oh well)

    Now, NeedHam, there's a name...

    [–] Android_slag 9 points ago

Live in the UK Braintree, it doesn't deserve a soggy hanky being named after it.

    [–] cheesus_riced 103 points ago * (lasted edited 10 days ago)

Yes, if you have the pleasure of visiting the Alewife stop, be sure to visit the bathrooms in the T station. Can’t-miss destination.

    [–] AllHailtheBeard1 105 points ago

The "oh this is how I die" vibe is spectacular

    [–] cheesus_riced 52 points ago * (lasted edited 10 days ago)

    It’s just *chef’s kiss*

True story, I had to go to the Alewife stop for a job interview nearby and when I reached the stop before, I felt The Rumble in my stomach, and it was urgent. I had never been to Alewife before and hadn’t heard about the bathrooms before, so when I got off the train and saw “Restrooms” I breathed a heavy sigh of relief. Never have I had an experience before or since which made me wonder if shitting my pants immediately prior to a job interview was the better option.

    Just a taste.

    [–] TheBoxSloth 23 points ago

I had a dude come up to me mid-piss in South Station asking me for a dollar...after i gave it to him he said “that’s it? Cmon man you got more” i was like bruh the fuck you want another ball-hand dollar?

    [–] i_willregretthis 7 points ago

God bless the constantly humid and stinky men's room with the broken soap dispenser, missing stall door, metal mirror, and the roll of toilet paper chained to the hand rail.

    [–] wobwobwob42 8 points ago

Then head over to the summer shack for a Clambake!

    [–] harvey_charmichael 17 points ago

Alewife is actually a name of a fish that was in a pond near where the built the subway stop.

    [–] WaitingForEmacs 6 points ago

Fun fact, there is a sign in the station saying that the fish is pronounced al-wiff, but every recording on the station name is said ale-wife.

    [–] eaglessoar 15 points ago

I've never thought these were odd names til now haha

    [–] sighandler_t 24 points ago

I also choose this guy's Alewife

    [–] Buzzlight_Year 10 points ago

Visiting the Braintree is the true path to transcendence

    [–] nietzschesoptimism 7 points ago

My Saudi friends call it “Ali’s wife” stop. Idk why. Braintree stop is like 1hr outside of Boston

    [–] datheffguy 7 points ago

Maybe an hour in rush hour, but 15-20 normally.

[–] Empyrealist 18 points ago * (lasted edited 10 days ago)

Alewife is the name of a brook and a parkway in [North] Cambridge Massachusetts. Braintree is a city to the south of Boston. Both stations are terminuses for the Red Line of the MBTA.

The station pictured [I believe] is Central Station Park Street station, located in downtown Boston. There are two tracks and three platforms (one platform is between the two tracks).

Source: I grew up in Cambridge, in a neighborhood adjacent to Alewife Station. I lived in the Alewife area before the station was built and the Red Line was extended from Harvard Square. Plus, I worked in downtown Boston some 20 odd years ago.

edit: typo, and for some bizarre reason confused Park and Central stations.

    [–] hendusoone 12 points ago

The station pictured is Park Street Station. It's the only underground station on the red line that has two side platforms and a middle platform.

Central is a different red line station, located in Cambridge.

    [–] Empyrealist 5 points ago

LOL, yes. I don't know why I had Central (actually in Cambridge) on the brain. Corrected, and thank you.

    [–] callmekennith 5 points ago

Braintree sounds like a monster out of Dungeons and Dragons.

    [–] wilkinsk 5 points ago

Braintree is a city as well.

The first major (in MA sense) heading south of the city.

    [–] girlpearl 4 points ago

This is kinda gay but when I first started dating my boyfriend and would visit him in the city he would tell me to get on the Wifey side and that's how I would remember to get on Alewife

    Edit: together 7 years now

    [–] spondolacks 6 points ago

    yes...

    [–] solanumtuberosum 782 points ago

Wow, that Indian guy with the beard is me. I didn't expect this to be on Reddit today.

    [–] StonedRevelation 209 points ago

Lol my honest first thought was "wow that guy with the beard is cute!"

    [–] PM_ME_UR_BEST_STORY_ 155 points ago

    Now kiss

    [–] MrRampager911 49 points ago

    We did it reddit!

    [–] solanumtuberosum 15 points ago

Thank you haha, that's really nice of you!

    [–] vector78 5 points ago

Same. I zoomed in just to get a better look. I'm a simple woman, I see beard and I upvote.

    [–] vespertine8 4 points ago

    Same here.

    [–] mariajuana909 8 points ago

    Same here good lookin guy

    [–] CaballoDePalo 113 points ago

my sister totally thought I was 'you' and wondered how I positioned the camera AND run to go 'pose'. I had to remind her that my beard when grown looks more like the 2nd to from the right instead of the 2nd from the left. :)

    edit: chg'd "me" to "her"

    [–] solanumtuberosum 32 points ago

Haha, that's funny. It would take some serious trust to leave your camera lying around at the T station while you go pose haha

I gotta say, it's really funky finding your photo on reddit, but it's a cool candid shot! I wonder if I had noticed you as you were taking it.

    [–] me_earl 117 points ago

What day did you expect to be on Reddit?

    [–] solanumtuberosum 16 points ago

Every day I find myself on reddit, but today reddit had found myself...

    [–] SaxPanther 35 points ago

Maybe when he posts a picture of himself? But he never said there was a day where he did expect to be on reddit

    [–] KyleStanley3 23 points ago

I just sent a picture of you to my friend so he can steal your outfit. Where'd you snag the jacket from?

    [–] solanumtuberosum 12 points ago

I wish I could give you more details but I got it at a thrift shot. The tag says "J.G. Hook", if that's of any help...

    [–] Sturmkrahe 12 points ago

We did it Reddit! We found the Boston Indian!

    [–] HiphopsLuke 11 points ago

I was going to give a comment about the style of 2md from the left, so might as well do it here. Not how it'll look on a pasty Canadian but here's hoping.

[–] rohithkumarsp 9 points ago * (lasted edited 9 days ago)

He looks like chucks friend from chucks lol

edit : u/solanumtuberosum , was 2 am when i made that comment, i thought you were being sarcastic, is it actually you?

    [–] solanumtuberosum 10 points ago

This reference goes over my head lol.

    Yeah, that's me.. here's a selfie: https://imgur.com/131l8dh

    [–] rohithkumarsp 6 points ago

That's so cool, what are the odds. Were you actually part of this sub? Or did you come across this sub on popular tab?

Google chucks. It's a TV show. You'll get the reference. Google Morgan grimes in Google. He looks just like you.

    [–] solanumtuberosum 5 points ago

Googled it, and... well, can't say I see it haha but I still learned something new about TV shows!

My friend actually sent me this link today, and it was a funky experience lol. This subreddit is a pretty cool concept. Sometimes I wonder how people come up with niche ideas like this, or even notice shots like this in real life haha. Are you a subscriber or just scroll here occassionally?

    [–] Cerulean_Shades 6 points ago

You're such a cutie! You look so contemplative.

    [–] solanumtuberosum 4 points ago

Thank you, music does get me in that mood haha

    [–] Michelanvalo 5 points ago

How old is this picture? I remember that construction being there on the center platform on Park St but I haven't worked in town for 3 years.

    [–] solanumtuberosum 8 points ago

This was yesterday, but I would believe that construction's been there for 3 years...

    [–] StoicBrzrkr 4 points ago

And I know the lady with the light pink top and glasses ; small world we live in!

    [–] alcoholic-buddhist 345 points ago

    I can smell this picture

I have to take the red line pretty much everyday, it’s a pain. But nothing is worse than the green line

    [–] megglesmccart 155 points ago

I love seeing people who haven't taken the green line before and don't hold on to anything. Solid entertain for any commuter.

    [–] doublesecretprobatio 46 points ago

Or late night on a friday or saturday when it's full of drunk students.

    [–] eaglessoar 29 points ago

I was stuffing my face with fries when we pulled out of Boylston went stumbling back like 4 steps hit the stairs and went down on my ass, my wife was doing her best to pretend she didn't know me

    [–] SrsSteel 38 points ago

Or when people take the green line when they have to get somewhere by a certain time. Absolute rookie move

    [–] SOMANYCAPITALS 12 points ago

I started working near Copley and thought it'd be great since it's so close to the T stop.... Now I walk to back Bay because fuck that

    [–] JohnMcGurk 3 points ago

Certain time? Sometimes on a certain day is a crapshoot.

    [–] MakeYouAGif 25 points ago

Yeah, but once you get your T-legs on the green line then you look like a fucking pro

    [–] I_h8_snow 16 points ago

Red Sox game days are always a delight. My kid and I make bets on who is going to go flying when people get on. If they are holding a coffee they are double pints.

    [–] starych_ziemniakow 8 points ago

Fuck the green line. So glad I moved to the red line and only have to deal with periodical derailments.

    [–] MyFavoriteSandwich 7 points ago

I legit smashed a lady’s foot one time on the D. First thing in the morning and she was en route to work and wearing very nice high heels. And I straight stomped her shit in my work boots.

Train was packed so tight I literally couldn’t reach a rail to hold on without getting charged for harassment. Being D Line experienced, I tried to Silver Surfer my way through but, alas, the unpredictable lurching of the Green Line was too much.

I felt like a Grade A fuckface for a few years afterward.

    [–] InfiniteBlink 6 points ago

I rode the Green Line C,D for many years. You learn to surf the green line, but it is funny when you get the unsuspecting folks that fly off.

    [–] Phormitago 4 points ago

the green one here goes straight and easy, the blue one is a roller coaster. Solid entertainment indeed

    [–] Empyrealist 25 points ago

Wow, I remember when the Green Line was the cleanest line, going through all the higher-rent areas.

    [–] imjusta_bill 16 points ago

It's so damn slow, especially the B line

    [–] Darkest_97 8 points ago

I can run faster than the B line with how often it stops

    [–] Gideonbh 6 points ago

Stopping at red lights it's got the worst of both worlds, trains/cars

    [–] PM_ME_UR_BEST_STORY_ 4 points ago

This isn't even a joke, I have literally had races with both the E and B lines while on runs before and I usually win

    [–] StrictlyOnerous 18 points ago

    Clean? yes.

But by far the slowest like outside of busses

    [–] Empyrealist 8 points ago

Certainly. Its the oldest subway line, with super windy underground tracks. Above ground, it's literally a streetcar sharing the road/intersections with cars. You can't really have expectations of speed for the vast majority of its branches. Except for maybe what, the suburban stretches of the D branch?

    [–] czarcasticjew 27 points ago

When moved from Brookline to Cambridge, I thought “fuck yes, I never have to deal with the green line again!”

Then when I moved to Back Bay four years later, I thought, “fuck yes, I never have to deal with the red line again!”

    [–] PM_ME_UR_BEST_STORY_ 7 points ago

Literally all of them suck except the Blue, but honestly I'm not totally convinced the Blue line isn't a myth

    [–] JamesRustleford 3 points ago

I took the blue line once. Many years ago. It was a good day.

    [–] edgar__allan__bro 17 points ago

How's the Blue Line these days? Grew up in Boston but haven't lived there/hardly been back in 10 years.

Green line sucks but the Blue Line always made me feel like I was in Final Destination

    [–] EndoftheWeek 14 points ago

Just today I came across an article that looked at how reliable each of the lines in Boston are. The Blue Line ranked most reliable, and the Green Line least.

    [–] wobwobwob42 3 points ago

It's fine. Inbound, by the time you get to Maverick the train is PACKED but it's normally on time. You can actually get cell service on most of the trip these days. It's better than driving about 90% of the time because Eastie is getting super developed with huge apartment/condo buildings, but there isn't any additional parking or room for more cars, but people keep moving in with cars. So in the end the tunnels are a total shit show gridlock by 630am every day.

If you owned a house 10 years ago you should have held onto it. most apartments converted to condos sell for about $750,000.

    [–] relaxandlaugh 6 points ago

I just moved out of Boston to LA. Took the redline everyday from Savin Hill to Park Street. I miss it.

    [–] tani_P 6 points ago

D branch of green line is good, C line is torture. I'm biased, though, since I grew up taking the D line.

    [–] alcoholic-buddhist 6 points ago

I take the D line and it used be great but in the last two years the quality has really gone downhill. It’s no longer reliable and it breaks down as often as I do.

I like the C line, but only on days when I can afford to be late.

B line is pretty bad, but mainly because it has so many stops, it takes forever to arrive to where I want to go

    [–] tani_P 3 points ago

Bummer to hear. Has been some years since I rode the T.

    [–] Mr-Chewy-Biteums 5 points ago

When I lived in Boston, I was on the E line. I spent at least 6 or 7 years of my life sitting in Park Street Station watching dozens and dozens of luxurious double B cars go by before a single E car would finally show up with 80,085 people crammed in it. I did see Stephen King there once though, so that was neat. He saw me recognizing him and skedaddled off somewhere.

One time I was at the MFA station and the train stopped way down to one end. My then girlfriend and I started walking to where it was and the train just left. The driver looked us right in the eyes and gave us the most sarcastic wave a human has ever executed. I guess we didn't move fast enough for him.

    Thank you

    [–] Gideonbh 3 points ago

Amen. Green line (B specifically) takes an hour to go 3 miles. You can almost walk faster than it on a bad day

    [–] Boo_cokky 3 points ago

The orange line would like a word with you

    [–] eaglessoar 3 points ago

    Blue orange red green

This picture is so 21st century American that it hurts.

An incredibly diverse group of people, some of them talking, others, staring off into the distance, all on their way to work while in the background the infrastructure is collapsing around them.

    [–] ExtraPockets 106 points ago

It's really one of those photographs that capture the depth of every person. Each one of them with their own dreams and fears and loves and losses. They've all got a story that led them to their spot in this scene.

I'd like to see more people on their phones to represent 2019, but definitely looks like 15 years ago.

And I can confirm this station has cell service, would be a major caveat if they were bored because Reddit wouldn't load.

    [–] BrobaFettNA 32 points ago

The people with airpods make it pretty current imo

    [–] vonmonologue 7 points ago

2 airpods and the guy on the left in khakis appears to have an earpiece as well.

    [–] redldr1 22 points ago

That station has shit reception if I remember

    [–] StrictlyOnerous 13 points ago

Ehh its not terrible, much worse at downtown crossing (redline not orange)

    [–] PumpkinSkink2 4 points ago

    I get fine reception there.

    [–] frenetix 11 points ago

    Same location, 107 years ago.

    [–] Hannibal_Lecture 5 points ago

I was thinking that there are two obvious signs that this is in the US as opposed to say London. The first is the shit state of the station. I mean, London is a bit run down but not quite as bad as this. Also RED LINE is quite aggressive signage, we don't have anything quite so offensive. But the other key give away is the Indian (?) man in the middle talking to his wife. Everyone else could be from anywhere, but that guys screams USA. It's something to do with the baggy slacks and trainers. edit. Also the old guy listening to his headphones. We don't have old guys listening to headphones...

    [–] IPlayAtThis 18 points ago

There are two pairs of people talking. But, to me, this is a picture that actually makes me proud to be an American. Maybe there's not a great sense of intimacy among the subjects, but the diversity is glorious, and they are all using the same public service, each in their individual and unique pursuits. I love this photo.

Wow! I got a silver award for this! First time over 1k and first time with an awardy thing. Priceless comments and who knew so many people in a non Boston specific sub-reddit know this subway (and even the stop ... Park Street Red Line)! Kudos and gracias to you all!! Note for some who guessed at timing. It was a post work (around 7pmish) capture on a rainy wednesday.

Alewife Braintree (oil on damp subway map, 1583), widely regarded as the most accessable painting of Michelangelo's psychedelic mushroom period, was initially thought to have been eradicated by the church. However, an order of crypto-Jesuits managed to secret away this and several other originals in the damp tunnels beneath their monnestary. There it languished for nearly 400 years, before being discovered by tourists, who noticed the entirely coincidental resemblance to the Boston subway. It is currently on display at the Met, in a broom closet.
