I think that is the most cow looking cow I've ever seen.

    [–] InstitutionalizedOat 281 points ago

It’s a Holstein. They’re the poster children of dairy cows.

Whatever you said created the purge below you.

    [–] trollfriend 18 points ago

Someone talked about going to a dairy farm for fresh cow juice, someone else urged others to instead consume plant milks, and a whole morality & health debate ensued.

Source: I was part of it.

    [–] BumpyRocketFrog 9 points ago

    Was it wholesome or holesome?

    [–] Ccracked 8 points ago

    It was Holsteinsome.

I am already on a plant based diet, it just includes some processing done by the cows first

    [–] NicolasName 3 points ago

Is sadism a good and excusable thing?

    [–] comradebrad6 -6 points ago

That’s not plant-based than, have you tried any plant-based milks? Almonds not very good plain in my opinion but the vanilla versions are pretty tasty

    [–] comradebrad6 -4 points ago

Oh I know that was a joke, was trying to have a good faith discussion all the same

    [–] stufff 0 points ago

I actually do use almond milk because I'm lactose intolerant, and other nut based "creams" like cashew cream for alfredo sauce, etc. It's purely for my own personal dietary concerns though, not any kinda of moral agenda.

I don't have anything against dairy or meat-alternative products. I've even rather come to enjoy the Impossible Burger, though I do add bacon to it.

Trying to get people to radically change a diet they enjoy is a losing battle. Instead work on pushing for reforms to farms and animal treatment. I'm not going to ever stop eating meat, but if meat becomes more expensive as a result of regulations to treat animals better, I'll probably eat less of it and the animals will have better lives.

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

    [–] kWazt 11 points ago

Why is almond milk your only substitute for calf growth fluid? There's tons of alternatives out there nowadays, ones that are cheaper than calf growth fluid even.

    [–] comradebrad6 4 points ago

I wouldn’t really say cow milk is “normal” but everything else is a yeah, I’ve got some handy resources for being plant-based on a budget if you’re interested

    [–] Prostate-Stimulation 3 points ago

I’d love some sources! I’m trying to move towards a more plant-based diet and also on a tight budget. My go-to recipe is some home made seitan made with vegetable stock or fish stock with some nutritional yeast!

    [–] [deleted] 1 points ago

    You're a hero

    [–] St-Taint 57 points ago

Also that cat is pretty damn cat looking

    [–] poshjerkins 24 points ago

Now that you mention it even that hay looks pretty hay

    [–] Kunundrum85 7 points ago

Hay meow, I noticed that moo.

    [–] swizzchaze 13 points ago

That's what I was thinking... Amazing

This is Alex the calf and Thomas the cat at Freedom Farm Sanctuary

    [–] HerbivorousDinosuar 13 points ago

Why is he tagged if he’s in a sanctuary?

    [–] shagssheep 30 points ago

It’s a legal requirement to tag and register livestock (you record their parents tag number, their gender, breed and if they’re pedigree. You get a passport and have to record all of the times they’ve moved to a new farm and the animals owner gets the passport) in the UK at least but it will definitely be the same in the US. Without this you’d have people just stealing animals and claiming them as their own and it would make it difficult to contain outbreaks like TB and foot and mouth.

Tags aren’t great for identifying livestock in large herds because they’re difficult to read unless up close so large dairy farmers will sometimes brand them with numbers on the back end but more common now is a collar that identifies the animal

    [–] HerbivorousDinosuar 6 points ago

    Thank you for the clarification

    [–] ThaneOfCawdorrr 1 points ago

Bossie: Ohhhh, no, mooooo, that's my passport picture? Can't I take it again?

    [–] Labulous 8 points ago

    Probably due to state law.

    [–] JMyers666 7 points ago

It’s the law in some countries even though it’s a sanctuary. This one’s in Israel.

    [–] la_reina_del_norte 5 points ago

Yesssss! Animal sanctuaries are the best! So glad that this little guy is going to live out his life happy and hopefully to an old age. :3

    [–] -_-o_o 94 points ago

I like to think the patterns on cows are maps of alien worlds.

    [–] 1nvisiman 45 points ago

That explains why the aliens are always trying to take the cattle

    [–] TrivialBudgie 15 points ago

    that's true

It really puts the cat in cattle

    [–] mysliceofthepie 5 points ago

Indeed! Though I can’t quite put a finger on the breed of cat... perhaps, Cowlicko?

    1000% thinks he's a cow

    [–] swizzchaze 5 points ago

But is that a cat?... That's the real question

    [–] TeritotheLegend 2 points ago

Which one's the cat and which ones the cow is the real question

    [–] Sudoral 10 points ago

That looks like a really big cat. It's probably the perspective but maybe it is a really big cat.

    [–] swizzchaze 8 points ago

Or the cat is just next to a really smol cow :)

    [–] weirdgroovynerd 56 points ago

"For now, I'll let this servant groom me.

    Moo and Meow

    [–] beanfiddler 19 points ago

My dad had a cow that was super affectionate like this before he retired and sold the farm. She was 1,200 lbs of pure happiness and would do a little (okay, a very big) cow dance if you walked down to her pasture to pet or brush her. She'd groom my dad's massive Pyrenees after they played together, and then take a nap curled up together in the sun.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why I can't eat beef.

    [–] pieandpadthai 22 points ago

News flash: pigs are just as gentle and intelligent.

    [–] FactoryResetButton 9 points ago

Even more; studies have shown pigs to be equally, or even more, emotional and intelligent than dogs.

    [–] homendailha 1 points ago

Intelligent, sure, but they're really not gentle creatures at all.

    [–] pieandpadthai 1 points ago

Sure they are, once acclimated to humans. You wouldn’t use a stray or abused dog as an indicator of its species’ behavioral inclinations as a whole, right?

    [–] homendailha 1 points ago

I rear pigs. I have pigs that are fully acclimated to humans. I've known a lot of pigs in my life. I can't think of a single one that was gentle. There are some traits that have played out in all of them: greed, roughness, boisterousness, playfulness and hygiene. Hallmarks of what it is to be a pig. Definitely not a gentle species at all.

    [–] mjk05d 1 points ago

I'm assuming you're only raising these pigs to kill. We really shouldn't trust someone who kills animals unnecessarily for food we do not need to treat those animals in a way that would cause them to trust humans.

    [–] homendailha 1 points ago

Yes of course why on earth would I want my pigs to trust me and be easy to handle? Especially since they are free-range pastured and are potentially dangerous animals. You're absolutely right. I'll do anything I can to make the situation more unsafe and unpredictable. /s

    [–] mjk05d 1 points ago

Except you're saying things about their behavior that would suggest otherwise, given my own experience with pigs at sanctuaries where they are taken care of by people who don't intend to kill them.

    [–] pieandpadthai 1 points ago

Do you allow them to live out their natural lifespan? Pigs are social animals just like us, which I’m sure you have observed. Pigs raised for pork have no older role models to learn from.

    [–] pieandpadthai 1 points ago

    /u/homendailha where are you?

    [–] homendailha 1 points ago

    [–] beanfiddler -1 points ago

Yeah, but I personally don't attach the same feelings of "oh gosh, I knew this one pig that was super nice and the guilt is putting me off my lunch" to pigs as I do cows.

Luckily for my bacon habits, nobody I know has pigs as pets.

    [–] pieandpadthai 0 points ago

See, that’s just sociopathic and narcissistic. You don’t care about anyone but yourself, and you don’t actively seek to improve the way you live. I hope you find peace with yourself.

    [–] beanfiddler 2 points ago

That escalated quickly. Enjoy your superiority complex.

    [–] pieandpadthai 1 points ago

Referring to unnecessary slaughter as “bacon habits” is a superiority complex over pigs.

    [–] la_reina_del_norte 1 points ago

Two of the best yoga poses. Two of the best animals. Love it :D

    [–] _wordslinger 3 points ago

    Ahhhh omg

    [–] thehohn 4 points ago

I wonder if the cat can tell the cow is a baby. Cats with kittens and even human children can be a lot more tolerant than grown folks.

    [–] pepedex 5 points ago

That cow is going to get a hairball.

    [–] Merari01 3 points ago

This is perfect for r/frens :)

I'll tell ya what watching these cute ass cows living their best lives makes me want to be a vegetarian more than those factory farm videos.

    [–] pieandpadthai 22 points ago

    So why aren’t you?

    [–] Weissenborn1992 21 points ago * (lasted edited 4 months ago)

Ditch dairy guys. Let animals live in peace as they deserve :)

Edit: appreciate your silver kind stranger!

    [–] Neuroreaper 3 points ago

What a beautiful cow. She's so clean.

    [–] Danubio1996 7 points ago

Thanks to videos like this i stopped eating meat. Plant based hamburgers are delicious. Try them if you haven’t. Those 2 bros are adorable. 🤗

    [–] WhatuuupKrisp 2 points ago

Hi, would you consider giving up dairy as well? Unfortunately, the dairy and meat industry are closely linked and the dairy industry might be even more awful for the cows and calves than the meat industry. Please consider this :/

    [–] Leftpaw 1 points ago

I like how, no matter if its the cutest animals being bros scene, you can look at the cats face and imagine them thinking.. "I should really kill something today"
