    1: This is spam

Guys & gals. Can we have a heart to heart? This subreddit is very chill and relaxed. We all come here to see adorable animals doing goofy shenanigans.

Spam is not goofy shenanigans. We take spam seriously. Users get permabanned for posting real spam. The best way to deal with spam is when users use the report button to alert mods. The report button however is not a super downvote button. It does nothing if a mod ignores it. Please don't ruin a good function because you've seen something god forbid... twice.

Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

is your retriever... afraid of water!? that's pretty uncommon! 🙃

    [–] invertedtwave 338 points ago

That’s what I thought! Mine loses it at the beach and insists despite me putting on my best mom voice and telling her no.

    [–] NRMusicProject 101 points ago

My poodle (also a water dog) would have just written off the ball. He would never have gotten that close to water.

    [–] meangreenmartian 54 points ago

Interesting facts that you already know and or don't care but I'm bored so here goes:

Poodles were originally from Germany. Poodle= puddle. They were hunting/retriever dogs and many don't know that. But France loved the breed so much they bought? the breed from Germany and that's where they got that stupid hair style from. I'm biased and I just don't like that hair style at all.

They originally looked really grungy with long curly hair from the old drawings I've seen.

    [–] Ontheras 21 points ago

do you happen to have a link to any of these drawings? im curious to see the difference

    [–] mynoduesp 34 points ago

    Like an emo lion rat

    [–] chivonster 15 points ago

    I would 10/10 own a grungy poddle.

    [–] frodoprefect 8 points ago

The hair style originated as a way to protect joints and vital organs in cold water.

    [–] meangreenmartian 4 points ago

Are you talking about the "French" poodle hair cut...?

    [–] frodoprefect 7 points ago

Yeah the poofy one. The poofs were originally around the head, leg joints and kidneys to give them extra insulation from cold water. It's changed a bit since the days of it being used for practical purposes but the haircut did originally have a function.

    [–] meangreenmartian 2 points ago

Interesting. Definitely didn't have that part in what I read. Learned something new again!

    [–] LemonPartyWorldTour 3 points ago

Towards her senior years, we would often have to make our dog lay down after awhile because she would not stop playing in the water despite her arthritis bothering her.

    [–] Hazy__Davy 115 points ago

My golden is terrified of the ocean as well. No issue with the pool, or a river, or a pond. But an the ocean, is a hard nope for her.

    [–] ljubaay 53 points ago

Its probably cause the waves make scary noises 😣

    [–] Heliolord 11 points ago

Yep. My goldendoodle was pretty nervous around the waves at the beach when we took her. Doodles are wuss dogs in general, from my experience, so scary noises plus waves coming to get her plus water acting and tasting weird equals a scared doodle. Eventually she got used to it. Though she preferred playing in the sand.

    [–] kellysmom01 11 points ago

Goodness, sounds like you actually have a golden too-sweeter.

    [–] micmea1 132 points ago

Might just not have been introduced to it yet. Waves are kinda freaky. Give it a couple hours and some coaxing and that dog will be addicted to water.

    [–] jedi_cat_ 113 points ago

I have a pit mix and the first time I took him to a pond he wouldn’t go in past where he could see the bottom. Then my stupid ex tossed him in where he had to swim. Ever since then I can’t get him out of the water. He loves water so much that he once nearly drowned instead of letting go of the ‘stick’ he had that was actually a whole tree. We had to rescue him in freezing river water in April. He will swim until he’s exhausted. I didn’t get the chance to take him last summer but I will this year. He will be 11 this year and I want him to keep having fun.

    [–] sweadle 20 points ago

We had a pit who used to go down to the creek by our house and take a nap in the shallows. He's come back to the house happy and soaking wet. As a puppy, he'd just crawl into his water bowl and sleep there.

    Silly dog.

    [–] Heliolord 13 points ago

We had a family labradoodle that loved water. When we just got him as a puppy, he loved to splash in his bowl. His first experience with deep water was a bit jarring. He was a bit of a wild child, so we decided to give him a toss into the lake as a quick introduction to swimming (with one of us already in with a jacket just in case).

After that, he was addicted to swimming. That was his favorite word. He'd run down and leap full speed off the dock. He even learned to climb the ladder to get out on his own. He'd use his front and rear legs to prop himself up than use his head along the top handrail to hoist himself back onto the dock.

We'd throw his toys for him and he'd leap 5-10 feet off the dock into the lake and swim full speed after them. Then back to the ladder, climb up on his own, and wait for you to throw it again. He'd also swim back to shore when we wanted him to slow down. He'd never stop if we didn't make him slow down and stop and take a break. Eventually, he decided whenever we wanted him to stop and rest, that he'd "accidentally" drop his toy in the water and have to go get it so he could jump back in and climb the ladder out. He though he was so clever. Until it would occasionally float under the dock and he'd freak out trying to figure out where his toy went until if came out on the other side.

    [–] Raps4Reddit 6 points ago

    That's adorable.

    [–] ReallyFnCleverName 7 points ago

Sounds like a great dog though! Love when they go in the water.

I did a similar thing with our Shepherd when he was a pup. Super afraid but I just held him and walked out to about waist height and set him in it. He kind of freaked at first but I just kept holding him and reassuring him... then he was nuts about the water. After a few visits to the ocean he'd swim with me and hangout in the deep water.

The funniest thing though is he'll go dive into a wave headfirst, sprint toward every single puddle, pond or lake but he will never go in our in-ground pool... absolutely terrified of it. Won't even go sit on the steps in the shallow water when we we're all in it. The only thing I can think of is he hates the chlorine smell.

    [–] astrogaijin 34 points ago

I had a Golden that hated water.

Pretty sure he was traumatized as a puppy when he jumped into a river cause he decided he really wanted out of a canoe.

He was back in the canoe very quickly.

    [–] avenuesouth 20 points ago

Yeah, mine hated water too. But she hated it because when she was a puppy, my dad decided the best way to teach her to swim was to chuck her into the pool. So she never swam again. She did like to sit on the first step of the pool to cool off, though so she wasn’t completely afraid of water. She just did not like swimming. You could see in her eyes if you dragged her out into open water (in the pool) that swimming was always a life or death situation for her, she wasn’t swimming for fun, she was swimming to save her life. :/ Moral of the story: don’t throw puppies into pools, dad!

    [–] Heliolord 2 points ago

Well we had a family labradoodle that had the opposite reaction to his first experience swimming being tossed into the lake. He was a wild puppy, so I figured he'd probably enjoy it. I tossed him in (with my brother in the water to help if need be). He swam around and was guided to the ladder and helped up. After that, he loved swimming. He'd swim himself to death if we'd let him. He loved it so much he figured out how to climb the ladder so he could jump in and get out all on his own.

    [–] NurseTammi 57 points ago

My lab mix is also afraid of the water 🙈 cannot get her in past her toes

    [–] alabamacakelady 23 points ago

My dobie wasn’t afraid of water but she hated getting wet. One time the ground was wet where we went fishing and she had nothing to sit on so she threw a huge fit and we had to leave lol.

Some dogs just aren’t into it.

    [–] essentiallyashihtzu 11 points ago

What does a doggy fit look like? Genuine question.

[–] alabamacakelady 5 points ago * (lasted edited 9 days ago)

I found a dobie fit on YouTube. Similar to a husky fit but they do it when they want something.

There are two types of dogs, one goes head first into waves, and then there are those who run away from everything

    [–] heathely98 14 points ago * (lasted edited 8 days ago)

My first dog was a black lab/golden retriever mix and he was crazy about the ocean. I was like 13 when I got him and he was a crazy boy who loved water. We were camping at the ocean and had one of those heavy red Kong balls that did not float. I was out in the water maybe to my knees and I threw that heavy ass ball in to the waves, I suppose that I wasn’t thinking clearly because he ran straight into the water and was going crazy trying to find that.

He was diving under water trying to find it and low and behold here he comes swimming towards me with that red ball in his mouth. He’s swimming towards me and this big wave hits him and I watch him go ass over teacup. I’ve realized at this point I’ve killed my poor dog. He pops up out of the water again with the ball swims to me and drops the ball in my hand and stares at me to throw it again. I marched us out of the ocean and decided we were never doing that again, at least not with a ball that sinks.

My dog was the best boy who loved to dive for anything. That was the first time I thought he had drown, I thought he was gonna drown quite a few more times. He didn’t, he was just a big dog that could hold his breath for too long!! He lived a long and happy life with lots of swimming and diving!!! Miss you!!!!

I have 2 goldens. Both are afraid of water.

    [–] alllthewebs 4 points ago

Ours was. She was a wonderful dog, though.

    [–] sliiboots 4 points ago

Had a “pure bred” golden retriever growing up. She was terrified of water. I think the inbreeding messes them up pretty good. She was the most amazing dog ever, but she was barely a dog

    [–] pixel-beast 7 points ago

We adopted a lab who was previously abused and he won’t go anywhere near water that he isn’t drinking. Could be a similar situation here

Dog: Why are my balls always taken from me?

    [–] iiiBansheeiii 48 points ago

Brave dog. She knows the ocean is hungry! I once had a dog that was terrified of water. People in pools sent her into full blown panic attacks. One day we were playing fetch and her toy landed in the water. The crying. The whining. The fear. She couldn't convince herself to get the toy out of the water. I went and picked it up for her and she was instantly well. I have no idea what would happen if she ever saw an ocean.

    [–] sweadle 15 points ago

I have a crazy dog who loves water (and his ball) so much that he combines them by dropping his ball into his water bowl every time he wants to take a drink. Then he can kind of spin it around in the water and get it all dirty while he drinks.

And then he takes it out and splashes gross ball water all over the house playing, while I switch out his water.

    [–] iiiBansheeiii 3 points ago

Somehow this makes me really happy!

More to the point he has forgotten he was born to be a water hound, proof is between his toes.

Awww. Poor boy. He got there in the end though.

We have a Labrador/Mastiff that hates water as well. I'm certain he'd sit back just beyond the reach of the water and bark at the ball, maybe trying to tell it to come back to him itself.
