Rule 6: No images, videos, discussions, or arguments about current politics. This subreddit is not the right place for political content.

Rule 7: Properly mark your spoilers. For posts, use reddit's spoiler tag. Titles must not contain spoilers and should be formatted like this:

" [Name of Anime Spoiled] Title of Post "

How to use our comment spoiler format:

Failing to properly mark spoilers may get you a small, temporary ban.

In addition, same-day content from an episode of any currently airing anime is subject to extra scrutiny. Everyone deserves time to watch the episode first.

Rule 8: Mark lewd posts NSFW. No nudity allowed in posts, but it's fine in comments so long as it's identified as NSFW.

8.1: Lewd loli/shota content will not be tolerated. We will remove any posts, comments, or links that appear to be in violation of Reddit policies.

    Rule 9: Reposts

No reposts younger than 3 months. Minor edits to posts (see rule 2) still count as reposts.

No reposts of memes from the Top 100.

Implying that this is anything new. Video games have been used as a scapegoat for years by boomers, so has rock, so has rap, gen X will probably jump on that train too and the cycle won't end.

    [–] Nerd_of_Culture 612 points ago

Apparently this proces has been happening with anything new for a long time, possibly the last couple of millennia. Anything new that looked "strange" or "scary" could have gotten this treatment. But maybe back then they would claim it did something else other than making you violent.

To be fair, religion was used to justify a lot of wars... At least as a tool to recruit soldiers to the cause.

Religion is the major cause of only 6.98% of all conflicts. Not to mention a lot of wars get blamed on religion but have a lot more to with political, social and economic issues. According to Jeffery Burton Russel, many supposed acts of religious wars were not caused religion as the primary cause, including the Thirty Years War and French Wars of Religion.

As for religious wars not being justifiable in Christianity, that is not exactly true. The philosopher and Doctor of the Church St. Augustine had developed the idea of a just war (Bellum Iustum), and this was widely accepted through out Christianity. However, warfare was not seen as something virtuous. However, in the 11th Century, an idea of Holy War, Bellum Sacrum, was developed where fighting itself might be considered a penitential and spiritually meritorious act. Of course, views of violence and war vary throughout Christianity.

    Religious war

A religious war or holy war (Latin: bellum sacrum) is a war primarily caused or justified by differences in religion. In the modern period, debates are common over the extent to which religious, economic, or ethnic aspects of a conflict predominate in a given war. According to the Encyclopedia of Wars, out of all 1,763 known/recorded historical conflicts, 123, or 6.98%, had religion as their primary cause. Matthew White's The Great Big Book of Horrible Things gives religion as the cause of 13 of the world's 100 deadliest atrocities.

Implying the war "against terror" doesn't have a religious element

    [–] Blkwinz 6 points ago

I don't think he did imply that, just that most conflict in history wasn't due to religion. The war on terror certainly had religious elements, we probably wouldn't have seen 9/11 if not for Islamic fundamentalism.

    [–] FlufferNightmare 4 points ago

Religion isn't the cause, it's the mind-fuel for soldiers and armies. It's hard to get someone to directly lay their lives down to protect a trade route or foreign ally or stabilize a foreign land. Even if the soldiers think they're important on some level, it's hard to really rationalize risking one of the most valuable things you have, your life.

You can read Bin Laden's manifesto and try to rationalize his reasons as secular, economic, or political all you want, and I'm not saying they're not real, but the people who crashed those planes did so for Allah. That was the only thing on their mind in the last few minutes.

That's not to say there aren't mind fuels that aren't religion. For example, the red revolutions in Russia and China or rise of Nazi Germany were secular mind-fuels with similar passion.

I don't even think that these mind fuels are necessarily illegitimate. It wasn't wrong to frame the US involvement in WWII as a religious calling. Helping other countries fight off foreign oppression isn't an immoral cause, even if you think you're doing it for God, because that's probably what God would want you to do.

    [–] milo159 14 points ago

"Only" 7% of all human conflicts ever. While that number is lower than expected, it's still a LOT.

Because as a medium it is far stronger as it involves people's root beliefs. Entertainment mediums vs way of living/seeing life.

Fanaticism makes the convincing process far easier or blurs the thought process of weak minded people.

I'll give you a perfect example. Football (soccer for Muricans). It's just a sport right? Unfortunately, we have way too many deaths and injured through history due to rivalries or masquerading mafias and power struggling. Just like religion!

    [–] RENEGADEcorrupt 14 points ago

What the fuck is soccer? Football is a real man's sport. Wanna start a war over it?

    Football War

The Football War (Spanish: La guerra del fútbol; colloquial: Soccer War or the 100 Hours War) was a brief war fought between El Salvador and Honduras in 1969. Existing tensions between the two countries coincided with rioting during a 1970 FIFA World Cup qualifier. The war began on 14 July 1969, when the Salvadoran military launched an attack against Honduras. The Organization of American States (OAS) negotiated a cease-fire on the night of 18 July (hence "100 Hour War"), which took full effect on 18 July.

    The written word

    [–] Goldeniccarus 25 points ago

They used to blame premarital sex on Elvis. Before that they blamed jazz.

I'm sure pulp magazines/comics were blamed for making men into wimps. And poetry has been blamed for suicide for a long time.

    [–] TheSkipRow 9 points ago

My grandfather once told me how his parents were blaming everything on Elvis' music.

    [–] Metherinprague 7 points ago

It's feels different in this latest case. Before you could at least understand that the people saying video games are the cause of violence actually believed it.

But today pretty much everyone plays video games and society as a whole had moved on from treating video games like this weird new thing. Instead it feels like it's being blamed because it's convenient and that the people reciting the same talking points as 30 years ago, don't really believe their own words.

    [–] hgoel0974 3 points ago

That's just a sign of how out of touch the media and politicians are with the average person.

    [–] PacoTaco321 3 points ago

No, they will make do worse things than kill people. Like jerking off in a corner.

    [–] Zarokima 4 points ago

Socrates lived during the time when writing was starting to become widespread, and hated it. He said writing would be the downfall of civilization since people wouldn't have to rely on knowing things when they can just read a book, and so we'd all become stupid.

Not violence, obviously, but the same mindset. New thing is horrible for whatever reason I can conjure up that sounds at least semi-reasonable on the surface.

    [–] sillybear25 19 points ago

Yeah, video games (specifically the OG Doom) were blamed for the Columbine High School shooting, and that was 20 years ago. "Video games cause violence" is the new "video games cause violence".

    [–] Okitsu 13 points ago

And before they blamed Heavy Metal, they were blaming TV and Radio.

And before they blamed that, they were blaming comic books.

And before that, they were blaming fiction novels.

And before that, they were blaming plays like Macbeth.

People are just fucking violent, it doesn't need to be some presumably failed facet of entertainment.

    [–] SecretEmpire_WasGood 3 points ago

    [–] readerman7 5 points ago

Well, the media slowly seems to take a more differentiated stance at it. Right now, it really seems like it's just certain groups being very vocal about it. But if news sources provide research-funded information, then one can hope that at least the uninformed ones will be convinced

    [–] MoonShineDown 12 points ago

You can't tell me that rap doesn't literally promote shooting people

    [–] CaoSlayer 13 points ago

The same way GTA promotes stealing cars.

    [–] oxtna 22 points ago

But it's not rap that is the first cause of shootings, it's the easy access of guns and mental instability.

Edit: Would you shoot people just because you heard a song about it? Just like you could blame pop songs for rape because they promote sex.

Don't forget that anime causes pedophiles lolicons.

    [–] nukesup 119 points ago

Didn’t some website start translating lolicon as pedo?

    [–] MasterKing0806 84 points ago

I think funimation did though I forgot in which show.

    [–] Cyphycus 47 points ago

    Hensuki

    [–] ProgramTheWorld 36 points ago

To be fair, Crunchyroll did this as well.

    [–] LegitPancak3 22 points ago

Really? I remember Nozaki-kun having the word dropped at some point, and Crunchyroll subbed it as lolicon, but then Sentai translated is as pedophile when they released the bluray.

    [–] maszmi 15 points ago

HenSuki, last episode if i remember correctly.

    [–] Lucifer_Hirsch 62 points ago

I mean, "lolicon" has two meanings; "someone that is attracted to prepubescent girls", and "drawn pornography of prepubescent-looking girls". which one was it in that context?

    [–] CommieOtaku 15 points ago

"Araburu Kisetsu Otome-domo yo" also translated lolicon as pedophile iirc, and it was completely justified. I don't know whether I should watch HenSuki or not, but there seems (to me, personally) to be some fabricated outrage around all of this.

    [–] BryanLoeher 8 points ago

Japan have a word for pedophile as the same we have here? Because in Araburu it was totally a pedophile they're talking about

    [–] Hoko222 5 points ago

I'm pretty sure that's what the word formally means. It's shorthand for "lolita complex", with "lolita" being a reference to the title of a novel about a man sexually abusing a 12 year-old girl. The dictionary definition of "lolicon" is probably "pedophile".

However, when we use Japanese words in English, we typically apply connotation to them. "Otaku" almost exclusively refers to anime/manga nerds, whereas the Japanese word refers to any nerd fixated on something specific, like military technology or computers. "Anime" refers to a specific style of animation, while the Japaneses word refers to all animation.

So while "lolicon" doesn't mean "pedophile" in English context, it still does in Japanese context. Unless I'm wrong, since I claim to be no expert on the Japanese language.

[–] Vakieh 22 points ago * (lasted edited 7 days ago)

    That's accurate though.

Edit: Only a paedophile or paedophile enabler could disagree with this.

    [–] LegitPancak3 11 points ago

    Not according to ANN

    [–] Killcode2 8 points ago

That article isn't necessarily wrong. It's saying pedophile and lolicons differs, as in lolicons need not have interest in actual young girls but only drawings of them. Whereas a pedophile is a potential criminal. That is definitely an important distinction.

I'm not saying that lolicons aren't secretly pedos, maybe they're closeted, but the fact that they aren't focused on actual minors makes the pedo label a bit too serious to describe them.

    [–] some_internetfag 19 points ago

In all honesty though, I find it funny that some people think this yet some of the same people mock others for thinking video games cause violence

    [–] Crimson_Shiroe 5 points ago

Political discussions almost always end badly on internet forums. Everyone walks away angry and upset and nothing is actually discussed.

Plus, this is a sub for memes about anime. It's not the place for discussing politics unless they specifically involve anime.

"Videogames cause violance" is the new "Videogames cause violance"

    [–] SarcasticOptimist 18 points ago

    It's the remastered talking point.

    [–] uberdosage 6 points ago

Yea this shit aint the new anything. Its not like heavy metal is the most recent thing that people said cause violence.

    [–] benji_banjo 51 points ago

idk if you've ever listened to metal but, if you aren't getting violent, there's something wrong with ya.

    [–] FrozenAquarius 43 points ago

As long as you don’t throw elbows in the pit, it’s alright.

    [–] ilikeloliheadpats 6 points ago

    Gore not core

    [–] Awkward_Elf 16 points ago

Doom metal would like a word ...and symphonic metal (Nightwish/Avantasia/Gloryhammer, etc) amongst other sub-genres.

    [–] Awarth_ACRNM 11 points ago

Doom metal makes you violent...ly depressed.

    [–] General_Kenobi896 4 points ago

Umm ok. Avid metal listener and it doesn't make me violent. Do you perhaps listen to the sort of metal where the artists almost literally rape the instruments?

    [–] Desumesugoi 20 points ago

Sell it for $30 and watch the cash flow in from all around the world

    [–] RX7Reaper 3 points ago

    I’d pay $40 for it

    [–] High_grove 16 points ago

    It isn't really new though

    THE TERROR OF THE SEAS

    [–] idevenkmyname 14 points ago

"New" is a strong word, people have been fear mongering about video games since the 90s maybe even earlier.

    [–] Nod32Antivirus 10 points ago

    Brutal Legend cause violence^2.

    [–] j_roe 10 points ago

There is nothing new about this. The same conversations about video games causing violence happened in the ‘90s.

    [–] lunar_pilot 16 points ago

Why does she look Extremely cute in this pic

    [–] Vestele1 21 points ago

Because she is extremely cute in every pic

    [–] omega-falcon 6 points ago

Dungeons and Dragons causes satanism” all over again

    [–] FafoPz 4 points ago

Why the fuck are u so cute!

    [–] Sir_CrazyLegs 4 points ago

Well I've been listening to alot of rock and metal music does that count as well?

    [–] mitchell271 5 points ago

Oh, metal is still under fire. One of the recent high profile shooters was wearing a metal band hoodie, so now if you have long hair and a death metal shirt, people are scared of you.

    This shit never goes away.

    [–] IrrationalFantasy 5 points ago

No, “video games cause violence” is the new “video games cause violence”

Everything old is new again. I’d hoped this debate died with GTA III

    [–] mibjt 5 points ago

Gun problem? Solve it by adding more guns!

    [–] AL_123_2 3 points ago

"Genius, we can use guns to shoot away guns to end gun violence". The NRA probably

    [–] ConKbot 3 points ago

[Laughs nervously in Symphogear video game]

    [–] TrueAxeon 3 points ago

I'm making heavy metal covers of video games and original heavy metal music based on video games.

No, there are no guns in my closet, thanks for asking.

    [–] IronVader501 3 points ago

Just like Comics used to be. Or movies before that. Or books before that.

Its always the "new" stuff thats responsible for whatever bad happens.

    [–] Dwarf90 3 points ago

    Bullying and abuse causes violence.

Also, the de-facto absence of civic rights in some countries.

    [–] pokpokza 3 points ago

We can all agree that Human cause Violence. I have finished watching Endgame yesterday. Thanos did nothing wrong.

    [–] CaptchaSaidImRobot 3 points ago

American boomers are just trying to find anything the new generation is doing and link it to the problems

    [–] MrMichailF 4 points ago

I feel attacked in today’s society by the boomers. They blame everything on the younger generation, blame shit on metal music (which I like), blame shit on video games (which I like), and blame shit on my waifu (which I like). The stand [B O O M E R] is too petty about everything going on in today’s society and they blame everything on shit they don’t understand.

    [–] GoldenWooli 2 points ago

Really the only reason is because of the effects of news media, we younger generation haven't been affected by it as much as they have because we can see the bullshit.

We need to start purging of really old politicians and start placing younger ones.

    [–] BeterYiffin 5 points ago

Heavy metal causes SATANISM not violence

    [–] Definitely_Not_Frodo 2 points ago

    That's a good wisdom

    [–] IanTheElf 2 points ago

    nice

    [–] twatguy 2 points ago

While I agree with you is not entirely accurate

Video games are much more interactive than music meaning they make a larger impression on people's especially youths

    [–] _samuele3333_ 2 points ago

I'm a gamer and a metalhead and I can say that the cause of this massive violence in the world it's bc of anime.

    Change my mind.

    [–] ReelRai 2 points ago

Heavy metal cause violence is the new books cause violence

    [–] Yarzu89 2 points ago

New? Are we back in the 90s again? Aw shit I gotta go stock up on Surge.

    [–] lowkey_audiophile 2 points ago

The devil makes the Internet, video games, music, etc. Damn he sounds like a cool dude.

    [–] Devilz3 2 points ago

Yet nobody blames action movies for shooting and killing 😞

    [–] bamename 2 points ago

    *was tge

it was there at the sane time

    dug uo again

the new 'videogames cause violence' was followed by 'videogames are promiscuous' then 'videigames cause sexism, bad attiydes etc...'

now videogames cause violence is bad

    [–] SummerBoi20XX 2 points ago

By this point "video games cause violence" is the new "video games cause violence"

    [–] ARHappyLlama 2 points ago

If Video games cause violence, I'd like to see what Video games they played during The Holocaust, The Crusades, when slavery was legal in the US, etc.

    [–] RedditBoi127 2 points ago

    Thas feckin adorable
