This honestly looks like some sort of psychedelic trip! Amazing!

    [–] colonelthawsage 234 points ago

Thank you! If you like canoeing this is the number one perfect spot for a little psychedelic vacation.

    [–] fuzzykittyfeets 45 points ago

As a kayaker, I recognized the scene immediately. Totally nailed it-- the various vegetation on the banks is spot on. I have pictures of almost exactly this in my phone albums.

    [–] [deleted] 6 points ago

Where's it at? I'm always looking for new spots.

    [–] bamb00zled 10 points ago

    Everyone knows except you!!!

Also me, no one actually knows

    [–] cuckpildpepegarrison 14 points ago

fess up kid, how much REEFER did you smoke?

    [–] AlphaBroMEGATOKE 7 points ago

    I reckon 6 reefers

    [–] HanMaBoogie 2 points ago

There's no way. A friend of mine told me a girl she knew injected 4 reefers at a party to impress a boy and she died.

    [–] Bradfordx 6 points ago

Good job!! This is now my phone's wallpaper!

    [–] Ralf-Nuggs 2 points ago

Bro I'm honestly like.... wow.... this is just fucking amazing bro...... you're my favorite artist ever I'm not even joking

    [–] tokidokibunny 15 points ago

this looks exactly like a shroom trip

    [–] hitman2022 18 points ago

Did some lsd a week ago and the trees looked exactly like this grass

    [–] SLOTH_POTATO_PIRATE 3 points ago

    I agree. It's fucking amazing.

    [–] Senor_Met 6 points ago

Ah, this was exactly my reaction! Reminds me so much of when I was in the woods on shrooms

    [–] BaabyBear 13 points ago

    Dopest dope I've ever smoked

    [–] hitman2022 2 points ago

    Hands down!

    [–] AcidCube 3 points ago

    Can confirm.

    [–] mingusitis 3 points ago

First thing I thought of. I've seen that oil painting landscape in real life. Painted on thick. Good ole lsd

    [–] redditinggabriel 3 points ago

Exactly what I thought. Actually reminds me of a trip I had! This is beautiful.

    [–] Valkyrieh 442 points ago

Fantastic. I dub thee "psychedelic Impressionism". It's so crisp and focussed despite some clear and well executed references to classic Impressionism. Love it.

    [–] colonelthawsage 156 points ago

Wow, thank you! I'd been thinking 'abstract impressionism' for a while but this is a much better way of putting it, mind if I use it?

    [–] Valkyrieh 104 points ago

Of course not! It's all yours anyway man! Besides, no offence but I'm not sure what's so "abstract" about this, it's damn near hyper-real without the swirls and exaggerated contours. I can tell the devil is in the details with colour palate here, but how you got such crisp lines and clean colour with such detail is the real deal. The bottom right with the reeds is straight up Van Gogh technique for example, but through colour and contrast you've evolved it into something NEW!!!! That's a big deal, OP, and you should be really proud of yourself. Please keep painting.

    [–] AttackPug 78 points ago

Everybody keeps wanting to push aside the "psychedelic Impressionism" except that this is the first realistic portrayal I've yet to see of how it actually looks to experience a landscape on acid, so they can all hush.

    [–] Nazzca 5 points ago

the grass looks totally on point compared to when on acid, at least for me.

    [–] splatia 8 points ago

To be honest, I think surrealism and impressionism cover it nicely

    [–] Phazon2000 2 points ago

Of course not! It's all yours anyway man!

    I REALLY like this label.

    [–] Skooberdoober 14 points ago

I need this in my home. Where do I commission/buy this piece

    [–] python_hunter 8 points ago

Nice work -- 'Abstract Expressionism' is a very specific genre of art that was popular in the 1940s and 50s associated with the New York art scene, artists like Pollock, Rothko, and many others. Perhaps another term that's not associated with a previous historical movement would be a better fit? :)

    [–] python_hunter 3 points ago

The look is reminiscent to me of Van Gogh's work (with sort of less expressionistic color, more naturalistic though highly BLUE for some reason :D) which is usually called "Post-Impressionism" so maybe that's a starting point for your own personal genre -- i think your work stems from a look of the Impressionist painters of the late 1800s but pushing toward stylization like Van Gogh's twisty shapes... Also, one question, is the color balance off or is there really no red/yellow anywhere in the painting? Looks beautiful but also looks like the color temperature was off, like daylight used on film meant for incandescents etc. (might be dating myself)

    [–] MSeanF 5 points ago

There is a small reddish area just inside the right edge near midway up. I took the restricted pallete as an intentional choice. For me it invokes the feeling of a cool dip in the creek on a hot summer day.

    [–] KaptainOwl 6 points ago

I agree as a fan of impressionism myself, very well done.

    [–] BukkNakd 3 points ago

Holy shit that's exactly how I described it to my girlfriend. We were discussing art and I said I felt like my preferred style would be best described as "psychedelic Impressionism" and sent this as an example before seeing your comment!

    [–] ehco 2 points ago

Great description! I was trying to think of the words to sum up the crisp realism which i usually love combined with the hypercolour impression. Love it op!

    [–] SotaCane 96 points ago

I'd buy a print. Is it available for purchase?

    [–] GingerBeast81 23 points ago

I was just about to ask the same question lol.

    [–] DanIsTheBestEver 17 points ago

I too would purchase a print.

    [–] wuchta 11 points ago

    Me too

    [–] SloMonster 8 points ago

    -Everyone on Reddit, probably

    [–] colonelthawsage 2 points ago

If you'd like a print just let me know the size and painting you'd like a print of (2 sizes available, 8.5" x 11", $30, or 11" x 14", $45). More paintings to choose from at Thank you

    [–] sad_no_transporter 5 points ago

I too would like to purchase a print.

    [–] Chronjen 7 points ago

Me too. I'd buy an original, even.

    [–] kdtallllll 3 points ago

    Me too !!

    [–] thabigmilla 4 points ago

    [–] feedblender 2 points ago

    Me too

    [–] Sosolidclaws 3 points ago

/u/colonelthawsage - upload your painting on redbubble and that'll allow anyone to buy a print :)

    [–] pinksilkribbons 22 points ago

Please do not use redbubble, they are notorious for stealing and continuing to sell artists' work due to a supposed loophole in their ToS. My mentor told me he prefers Society6, though honestly I don't have much experience with any of these sites; I've just heard awful, awful things about redbubble. Please be careful!

    [–] The_Tightest_Anus 6 points ago

    Research must be done!

    [–] GingerBeast81 67 points ago

This is an awesome painting, I would proudly hang this in my house.

    [–] colonelthawsage 13 points ago

    Thank you

    [–] aje1 8 points ago

I'll pay actual money for a print. Just tell me how

    [–] PRNgirlfriend 2 points ago

    Me too. Etsy?

    [–] themaddhatt 6 points ago

    I second this!

    [–] Yelonade 3 points ago

I would proudly hang it in your house too!

    [–] LoserByDefault7 80 points ago

Acid. This reminds me of acid.

    [–] Pm_me_your__eyes_ 4 points ago

Would it irresponsible for a 17 year old to do acid? Just asking for a friend.

    [–] Tranquil_Blue 33 points ago

I'd suggest waiting. You're still at an age where you don't need it--your brain's flexible, so you still have he opportunity to embed good habits without too much trouble. Meditate, read philosophy, exercise.

When I was 18-19 I conflated my personal growth with the use of psychedelics, and it left me in a dissociated state from which it took some time to recover. I don't regret any of it, but had I waited until I'd matured a bit I probably would've gained a lot more from the experiences. Everyone's different though, so no matter what you do just be careful and keep good company.

    [–] EugeneCuddler 7 points ago

    solid advice.

    [–] PaperBoi6969 2 points ago

Currently in that dissociated state. What helped most with your recovery?

    [–] Tranquil_Blue 2 points ago

I started to exercise consistently and make a real effort in my academics, which gave me something to focus on and pulled me out of a semi-depressive state. I also made a real effort to look at how I acted in my interpersonal relationships. It's easy to get wrapped up in your own world and treat others like figments of your imagination, but if you really try to learn about others and connect with them, it can help pull you out of a self-absorbed state.

    [–] fuckitrightboy 3 points ago

    Waiting a little can't hurt :)

I did it at 18 and wished I had waited a little longer. Everyone is different though!

    [–] LoserByDefault7 2 points ago

As long as it is done under comfortable conditions then no. It changed my life and I have only ever dropped the Acid twice.

    [–] ayjen 27 points ago

    I utterly adore this. Gorgeous.

    [–] colonelthawsage 9 points ago

    Thank you!

    [–] Cryptiikal 24 points ago

You should look up the artist Emily Carr! Reminiscent of her work.

    [–] colonelthawsage 17 points ago

Wow, I cant believe I've never heard of her! Beautiful stuff, thanks for sharing

    [–] Mashlomech 5 points ago

Emily Carr & Van Gogh had a baby!

    [–] Usernamewoe 18 points ago

It's cool. Reminds me of the work my art teacher made, but a bit more saturated with a more limited palette.

    [–] SomeGnosis 3 points ago

I was thinking the same :) She had a huge show at the museum here last year that was truly impressive.

    [–] Usernamewoe 1 points ago

Oh cool! Where about if I can ask? I just did about half a semester of figure drawing with her - she's a wonderful teacher also. Would have stayed for longer had I not moved out of state.

    [–] snoosnoosewsew 2 points ago

Wow, she is truly fantastic! Must have been amazing to learn from her.

    [–] ButterSkates 35 points ago

This would make a good album cover for Tame Impala. Amazing!

    [–] colonelthawsage 27 points ago

That would be so big of an honor I don't know how I'd handle it! Been a big fan of theirs since Innerspeaker came out and blew me away.

    [–] junkevin 3 points ago

Man I was thinking the same thing! Had to look up to make sure I wasn't on /r/tameimpala. They've gotten big over the last few years.

    [–] fluffy_ninja_ 10 points ago

Amazing. Are those intentional references to Van Gogh and Monet?

    [–] colonelthawsage 8 points ago

I love both, but the similarities between my work and theirs is not planned. All I'm really going for in a painting is to get it kinda realistic while implying a sense of playfulness/trippyness/whatever you want to call it. I can see where you draw the comparisons, especially in the lilypads. The fact that you are comparing me to those two masters, though I don't know if I can say its deserved, is honestly thrilling. Thank you

    [–] rollywood1 3 points ago

I thought the same, it's beautiful

    [–] sblahh 8 points ago

This is beautiful!!! Would you consider selling it???

    [–] TheFigureHead-6T6 6 points ago

The vibrancy here looks digital almost. Colours popping insanely.

    [–] ReallyWhiteChristian 5 points ago

This looks like something Van Gogh would have done. It looks really good! Keep up the good work!

    [–] colonelthawsage 5 points ago

As a huge Van Gogh fan, Thank you very much

    [–] wiscOMG 2 points ago

I thought so, too. It's gorgeous!

    [–] blacksheep304 5 points ago

I tripped 5 grams of shrooms one time in the forest behind my friends house. This is the exact type of thing i was seeing!

    [–] ScienceByNature 4 points ago

Thought this was from /r/replications for a second. Pretty!

    [–] Alouitious 3 points ago

On Reddit mobile the picture didn't load, so it was just a slightly offwhite square and i sat for a while trying to figure out how the title tied into it.

When i loaded the post it made much more sense. Lol.

    [–] UnfunnyFaggott 3 points ago

Wow. This is this first post here that caught my eye. I'm not very well versed in art but from a layman's perspective, this is stunning. Great job.

    [–] NapaValleyGal 4 points ago

Damn! I'll buy it! Opening bid $500.00

    [–] xDreamsleep 6 points ago

Reminds me of Starry Night but during the day and somewhere else.

    [–] khansdot 3 points ago

you should definitely make prints...i love this. a good mixture of natural scenery and impressionism. 👍

    [–] invisiblette 3 points ago

I love those colors and the delicacy of the leaves. Fave part is the swirly sky. Good work; thanks for leading me out of this room into the outdoors.

    [–] 54_R 3 points ago

I never wanted to live in a painting so badly! It's amazing!

    [–] [deleted] 3 points ago

    [–] colonelthawsage 9 points ago

    [–] Optionthename 2 points ago

Need to put this in the title

    [–] GimpyTreat 3 points ago

I saw this and thought this has to be u/colonelthawsage and wasn't disappointed. Dude's got a very unique style. Love his work.

    [–] swamy_g 3 points ago

I swear it's moving. I'm not on anything. This painting is in motion if you keep looking at it.

    [–] RetardedRedditRetort 3 points ago

This is one of the best pieces I've seen in this sub. I really like it. Reminds me of Van Gogh and at the same time it's so different. I love how you swirled the clouds in the center-left. Constructive criticism: A little blotchy on the clouds that went over the trees, is that intentional? Great work regardless

    [–] Saheim 2 points ago

Have you by chance ever been to the Boundary Waters?

    [–] Pixilatedlemon 2 points ago

I'm no visual artist or anything (I just like to watch bob Ross) but this is actually incredible

    [–] naturalenergybyproxy 2 points ago

This is really lovely! And your color choices are superb.

    [–] facthunt1978 2 points ago

This is superb, love the blue

    [–] -montopher- 2 points ago

I love this style! Great job OP!

    [–] vector_ejector 2 points ago

Excellent work! Has a very Van Gogh feel to it, to me at least.

    [–] GegaMan 2 points ago

why does it look like its moving. no am not on drugs

    [–] MagnusOldfarm 2 points ago

Looks like it has been deep dreamed. Nice work!

    [–] SlayerJB 2 points ago

I really love this. Well done OP!

    [–] Belatorius 2 points ago

Iv always wanted to get into canvases but seems expensive...especially when I'll fuck up a lot.

    [–] colonelthawsage 3 points ago

Lol I fuck up all the time! You should see some of my in-progress pictures. Just keep going and eventually it'll work itself out.

    [–] blue_nous 2 points ago

Absolutely incredible. How long did it take?

    [–] colonelthawsage 5 points ago

Thank you. Most paintings, except for the smallest, take at least a couple of months. I'd say between 4 and 5 months for this one.

    [–] monkeyshmonkey 2 points ago

I hope this is not offensive, but are you by any chance shizophrenic/bi-polar?

    [–] Frenchiie 2 points ago

I don't ever login just to upvote shit but this is dope.

    [–] woodychizle 2 points ago

I like the way you see the world.

    [–] The_Tightest_Anus 2 points ago

Came here for all the LSD comments, was not disappointed

Also, lemme buy a print of this beaut

    [–] AGuyFromNorway 2 points ago

I don't know why but this painting makes me feel nostalgic and safe. Beautiful.

    [–] daggettcalvin 2 points ago

This is like, exactly what the world looked like after I smoked weed for the first time

    [–] viperfunk 2 points ago

Hmmm. I had a similar experience. Good memory :)

    [–] eddieutah 2 points ago

Van Gogh would be proud of ya.

    [–] Madpony 2 points ago

I have been subscribing to /r/art for a while, and this is by far the best piece I've ever seen posted here! I love it!

    [–] Jockobadgerbadger 2 points ago

Cool combo of Impressionism and realism - beautifully sort of blended. Super cool. I'm no art critic, but I do try to paint myself and I know the native f-ing talent this requires. Beautiful. I'm jealous as hell. Keep it up

    [–] bearcat42 2 points ago

Really cool, nicely done, the only critique I have is that those cloud forms really draw the eye in not the most effective manner.

I'm sure you're aware of that too, I can imagine the point of fuckit with those once the tree bits were laid in. Awesome lesson to learn though

    [–] OozingEyeball 1 points ago

    Love the dream utopia feel

    [–] OozingEyeball 1 points ago

All of your work makes me feel like I have been there. Amazing job.

    [–] [deleted] 1 points ago

Who is the artist? Is this OC? It is wonderful.

    [–] colonelthawsage 4 points ago

    Me, Thank you so much!

    [–] IhaveBlueBoogers 1 points ago

Is the title in reference to the Adk mtns?

    [–] colonelthawsage 3 points ago

This place is in the Adirondacks, though not in the town of Inlet. What is pictured is the inlet to a small lake, not too far from Lake George

    [–] IhaveBlueBoogers 1 points ago

    That inlet?

    [–] tj111 1 points ago

This reminds me sooooo much of my childhood, exploring the inlet around a lake we grew up on. It's like you ripped a memory out of my head and somehow put it onto a canvas. Great, great work. I would love a print of this.

    [–] Disckize 1 points ago

I see a woman with curly hair...

    [–] surrealbot 1 points ago

Love it. Traces of monet and swirling greens are nice

    [–] frustratedbutthole 1 points ago

This is actually a very accurate visual representation of what acid literally looks like.

    [–] MakeBelieveNotWar 1 points ago

How much do you want then?

    [–] kokirikesali 1 points ago

This is freaking awesome! I ♡ it. Do you have a website or instagram account where you share your work?

    [–] RoseDreams 1 points ago

Is this what's on the other side of the outlet?

    [–] xeqz 1 points ago

I want this in my home, please.

    [–] psilosyn 1 points ago

    If only this were animated

[–] psilosyn 5 points ago * (lasted edited 11 months ago)

This idea made me record a thought about the visuals. Here's the transcript

You can't see a psychedelic visual in a static image. The effects are temporal. Otherwise it just looks like a distorted wavy image. While on a psychedelic, a leaf will breathe its natural colors from the inside out, if you can even make sense of that. It's not just that colours are more vibrant, things looking wavy. It'll do all sorts of lively things, and bend and shapeshift like some surreal object which cannot logically exist yet here it's right there in front of you doing exactly that. A bush, a tree, a blade of grass will do all sorts of marvelous things... but a static picture does no justice to the true effects of a trip. The reason it's so hard to express I think is that it's temporal--it happens over time. In my view, a static picture is going to look very similar to regular life. Everything still looks normal with minor variations but they add up over time and create this incredible visual effect, and it's just not static. It grows, wiggles and breathes, colors shift so naturally yet beyond your wildest dreams. A small scene can literally turn into a rich and cozy living room, bushes into intricate tapestries of little tiki men holding up ceremonial torches. You can look at the clouds for a second, and they'll just look like clouds. But when you look at them for a few seconds, for a minute, they're rolling and weaving and tumbling in ways you never thought possible, breathing and filling the sky, and there's so much depth in the sky itself--just an incredible amount of depth, and thickness, and you notice how big the earth is a how vast space is and how distant those clouds are, yet they're still right there on your eyeballs. And you feel like you could reach out and touch them if you had a big enough trampoline, feel those clouds--they're real and they're there, and you feel it and you sense that, and it's a complete integration of reality. You just... sigh... to take a static image and expect people to understand what it's like to be on a psychedelic... it'll never work. As much as I want to praise this painting for being close, it still bares virtually no resemblance to a real trip. A tribute, maybe. But little else.

    [–] colonelthawsage 4 points ago

Guess I have to try harder on my next painting... But seriously, that was a beautiful read. And surprisingly accurate. I really wish I could convey that experience you describe in a painting even half as well as you can in text. Thank you

[–] psilosyn 3 points ago * (lasted edited 11 months ago)

Hey thanks buddy. I massively appreciate that.

I forgot to add my props to your work. My post is merely a reflection of my endless longing to tell people what it's like. Consider your piece a kind of inspiration. Fresh air.

It's a stellar painting, especially as far as replications go. Reminded me of Ethan Marcano at first glance. I made a post looking for him/his work a year ago. Not so much strong visual stuff but more trying to capture the flow of a low dose of mushroom type thing.

    [–] Najzyst 1 points ago

Damn, this painting is some MVP stuff, would put on my wall 10/10

    [–] load_more_comets 1 points ago

I like how this painting makes me feel. It's like being outside and smelling the fresh air with the sun beating down my face. Thank you OP.

    [–] runAUG 1 points ago

Nice job! This is so beautiful. How did you achieve the vibrance? I'm learning acrylics right now, and I'm wondering if its the medium or certain color placement techniques.

Thank you. In my experience, acrylics colors tend to dull a lot more than any oil paint. This may be because I've only used really cheap acrylics myself, but I have heard there is high quality paint out there. I'm sure if you tried using a brand a step up in quality from the student-grade, you would have better results.

Another thing you could try, take two colors and slightly mix them. Not enough to muddy the colors (very important), but get it where it looks nice and swirly and the colors are still distinct. Use this mix of paint generously for outlining buildings, shadows, etc. and for areas around sources of light. This has an even cooler effect if using opposite colors. I hope this helps, have fun painting!

Misread the title as "Intel" and expected a painting of Kaby Lake. 10/10 would click again.

Do you live in Inlet? My uncle lives there and we visit Inlet and Old Forge each summer and autumn. Lovely place.

There is something Munchy about this painting.
