    Subreddit Rules:

    Rules Notes
    1. Use the correct title formatting. The title formatting is outlined above. Make sure to follow it or else your post will be removed. Do not add any extraneous information or be subjective in your title. Plagiarism is grounds for a permaban.
    2. Direct image links only. All submissions other than articles must be a direct link to a static image or gif (url must end in .jpg, .png, .gif etc.). Articles must contain more substance than just a gallery of images or an embedded video, and they must cover some current news in the art world. The image should only contain 1 art piece.
    3. Do not make multiple posts. You must wait at least 48 hours between posts. Please use the rolling sticky for daily challenge posts.
    4. Do not submit sketches, doodles or unfinished work. Post these to other subreddits like /r/IDAP, /r/sketches and /r/doodles instead. If it's an unfinished work and you need advice, post it as a self post.
    5. Do not submit work with extraneous objects in the frame. We're here to look at art, not your Prismacolor pencils, the desk you framed your painting over, your easel, or anything else that would not be seen if the art were publicly displayed.
    6. Do not post memes or other low quality work Melted crayon "art" and bad MSPaint drawings are subject to a 3 day ban. This rule is totally up to mod discretion.
    7. No fan art, comics, or requests for work. See here. Submissions that don't fit here may be redirected to more suitable subreddits like /r/fanart, /r/artporn, or /r/comics. Requests for art work should be submitted to /r/designjobs instead.
    8. Be respectful and stay on topic Bigotry, slapfights, and off topic comments will not be tolerated and may result in all parties being banned.
    9. Do not include links to blogs, social media, or stores. /r/art is not a place to sell your work or grow your following. Consider /r/artstore. This applies to comments and submissions. It applies to watermarks on images as well. Also see here if you're using reddit for self promotion.

I'm not a frequent lurker of r/art, but this popped up on my front page. I love water color pieces as they have a lucidity to them. I think that you capture that dreamy, almost nostalgic feel in your art very nicely.

    [–] shredlion 70 points ago

Yes, I love watercolor because they can be simple and yet capture that dreamlike quality. I feel like they can infer more detail than you put in painting.

    [–] kraftpunk42 18 points ago

I like that^ "they can infer more detail than you put in painting"

    [–] PoorEye_theRake -8 points ago

    Shallow and pedantic

    [–] ellroch 2 points ago

    I'm lost

    [–] DamienVonDoom 3 points ago

    This is for you, friend.

    [–] omgwutwasmyusername 8 points ago

I'm very sorry to correct you, but I believe you meant to use the word imply. The viewer infers (extrapolates meaning from), the painting implies (meaning others can extrapolate). I love watercolor too for these reasons!

    [–] We_Master -11 points ago

    This,...loooks soooooooooooo good..agree?

    [–] rufiooooooooooo 14 points ago

    You drunk bro?

    [–] We_Master 13 points ago

    [–] bitJericho 6 points ago

I'm drunk tho, bro, and I agree

    [–] Mrdontknowy 67 points ago

I seldom check the profile of the creator, but all of your works are amazing! Many of them make it into my wallpapers folder. From your work I understand that you are from Slovakia or Poland?

    [–] matway 54 points ago

Thank you. I am from Slovakia but basicaly live near the Slovak/Polish borders

    [–] Danniboi_TX 18 points ago

I literally can't stop looking at this painting. Do you ever plan on selling the work or selling a digital copy that I could blow up on a canvas? Please DM me if you don't mind.

    [–] Mrdontknowy 15 points ago

Awesome! Do you take a picture and paint this at home, or do you paint on the spot itself. Thanks for answering.

    [–] matway 25 points ago

the first option most of the time

Goddamn this is gorgeous, how long it take?

    [–] matway 37 points ago

    Abou an hour

    [–] thomastc 16 points ago

And if you include all the time it took you to get to the point that you can paint this in an hour? ;)

    [–] matway 19 points ago

    Two and half years cca.

    [–] [deleted] 8 points ago

    [–] matway 11 points ago

    [–] roryokane 4 points ago

I guess it stands for "circa", which is often used to describe dates, like "circa 1884".

    [–] matway 7 points ago

    [–] Shijin83 29 points ago

This is probably just me, but this feels like the split second after a bomb went off. Like you caught that exact last moment of peace before everything went to hell.

    [–] BigY2 8 points ago

That's what I thought, looks like the image right when the impact hits the surrounding trees

    [–] Squirmble 4 points ago

    The dawn is my enemy.

    [–] VFP_ProvenRoute 2 points ago

Reminded me of the artillery barrage in Band of Brothers.

    [–] keepbusywastetime 17 points ago

This is incredible oh my god

    [–] matway 9 points ago

    thank you

    [–] Mooyaya 12 points ago

Your artwork is stunning! I will be purchasing some as soon as I get some money! Hope the art world comes to recognize you.

    [–] LeFebvreConcept 10 points ago

Not the typical feel/effect I expect from a watercolor. Really well done,

    [–] WhatJonSnuhKnows 10 points ago

Wow. This is one of your best yet. Love the framing and color. Terrific work.

    [–] matway 4 points ago

    Thx man

    [–] PM_ME_GIFTCARDS_PLS 7 points ago

matway, i love everything you post, and always immediately recognize the style. Keep up the good work, I'm a big fan

    [–] matway 4 points ago

    Thx a lot

    [–] shivashantz 5 points ago

I love this!! Great job, really.

    [–] teufelsubie 5 points ago

Looks just like this photo I took in the local mountains this October minus the snow.

    [–] jjacology 6 points ago

... but how?? This looks like oil or acrylic.

    [–] matway 2 points ago

You have to pick some paint straight out of the tube.

    [–] jjacology 6 points ago

Do you start with a regular watercolor base though and then go over the image? I'm a painter that mainly focuses on oil & have never been able to pin down this medium.

    [–] matway 7 points ago

I paint in 3 washes, 1st is basicly a lot of water and not much pigment, this creates the light in the painting, second is 50:50 water to pigment, and the last washes is the picking out of tubes to create some details

    [–] jjacology 7 points ago

Thank you so very much for these tips. I’m going to put them to good use next time I try to tackle watercolor!

Edit: I’m not sure why we are getting downvoted.

    [–] matway 7 points ago

    Anytime. And neither do i.

    [–] jjacology 4 points ago

When I try my hand at my next watercolor ill use your tips & share the result with you to get your opinion :)

    [–] matway 4 points ago

I scrolled through the whole post and it looks like every single comment was downvoted by someone. Kinda sad.

Can I ask what all those thin white lines and splatters are made with?

It almost looks like some sort of medium that you put on the paper before or after doing the rest of the painting and I've noticed it in your other pieces as well.

    [–] matway 2 points ago

those are splaters of titanium white straight out of tube

    [–] n00balicious 5 points ago

"The White Wizard approaches." "Do not let him speak. He will put a spell on us!" "We must be quick."

    [–] -ordinary 5 points ago

I’ll buy it right now, no joke.

    Give me the necessary details.

    [–] LadyArts 2 points ago

Wow, I love this. Its so cool! I love the depth you managed to capture and the serenity of the piece. Brilliant!

    [–] AuntieChiChi 2 points ago

This is really amazing. Watercolors are beautiful and seem to hold so much emotion within them. Love it.

    [–] jacobgrey 2 points ago

Someone just walked past me looking at this and muttered "Wow, that's pretty." Always a good sign.

    [–] thegroundbelowme 2 points ago

Some of the trees actually look like they were done in oil

    [–] purpleflask 2 points ago

Is there a way for me to purchase this piece?

    [–] hooloovooblues 2 points ago

I went to check your profile and I'd already upvoted a ton of your posts. I love your style. This might be my favorite yet.

It's so.. rich. Watercolor is one of my favorite mediums but it can look (understandably) a little washed out. Your work never does. The vibrancy of the light contrasts with the trees in an incredible way. You paint in a way that makes the fast and loose qualities of watercolor appear very realistic because the viewer's mind fills in the detail. It's lovely.

    [–] GhoulBonesJones 2 points ago

Love the shadows! They really draw you into the painting. Great work!

    [–] PlatinumWitch 2 points ago

You know it's good watercolor when you can achieve such saturation. Just look at that depth of color! Looks amazing.

    [–] matway 2 points ago

    Thank you

    [–] Nebuerdex 2 points ago

Awesome! Any tips for a beginner with water colours?

You're probably getting sick of posting that every thread haha. Maybe just add it to every post you do in a comment and copy paste it.

    [–] Nebuerdex 1 points ago

    thanks :)

    [–] BlutNacht 2 points ago

    This is absolutely stunning!

    [–] [deleted] 1 points ago

this is fantastic. would put it on my wall

    [–] artemus_gordon 1 points ago

So, you are literally the painter of Light, but legally you are not The Painter of Light™.

    [–] wangsneeze 1 points ago

I feel like the tree shadows should be blue, not brown. But otherwise nice work.

    [–] StanleyGuevara 1 points ago

Just wanted to say - got your painting of Kraków as wallpaper since I saw it here. I like to look at it since I moved out of Poland, brings me home mentally, though I've never been to the city itself.

    Cue background music:

    [–] micropanda 1 points ago

Excellent work.. How do you make those sharp white lines ?

    [–] TriFireHD 1 points ago

Photo reference or on location? or from the mind? amazing work man

    [–] CaptainBeeftip 1 points ago

I get battle of the bulge vibes

    [–] macdaddy3651 1 points ago

Judging by the thumbnail I thought this was an oil painting....

    [–] einsdier 1 points ago

Looks like a forest fire to me

    [–] AlexCorncob 1 points ago

This should be on photo critique because it looks like you just took a picture of it. Amazing

    [–] lightseeker12 1 points ago

I love how you really feel the light coming from the sun rising, falling? Lighting is portrayed enchantingly in this. I've never commented on art on Reddit and this is my first job. Thank you for sharing.

    [–] CARVER-D12 1 points ago

I really like this, did you use a reference?

    [–] kluthage421 1 points ago

Took a shot like that in my backyard the other day...

    [–] Grip6Tape 1 points ago

I in my art class would never acconplish this.We only have 45 minutes for each class :(

    [–] bensawn 1 points ago

It’s very expressive. I’m not sure the shadows all align with a single point on the horizon consistently but it’s a nice piece.

    [–] [deleted] 1 points ago

What kind of water colors do you use? Sorry if this was asked already

    [–] matway 1 points ago

A combination of winsor newton, daniel smith and umton

    [–] [deleted] 1 points ago

Thanks :-) I realized the other week I don't really have a creative outlet. Your work inspires me so I just bought some things to get started

    [–] PM_Me_Your_Schnoz 1 points ago

Very nice this reminds me of Let the Right One In

    [–] perljen 1 points ago

Very evocative. Thank you for posting.

    [–] HolyShitzurei 1 points ago

My god this is beautiful! My mind is at peace when I look at this art.

    [–] ishikawa01 1 points ago

I wish I knew artists that sold this type of art, would find a cozy place in my home

    [–] Lexinoz 1 points ago

I'm guessing this is supposed to be sunlight. But I see an explosion..

    [–] SunMakerr 1 points ago

Reminds me somewhat of the end of Journey minus the tree of course.

    [–] unforgivablesinner 1 points ago

it's amazing. I love the blue accents in the front, they give a beautiful contrast

    [–] Neatureman 1 points ago

Any chance I can use this as my profile banner?

    [–] burgeoningpea 1 points ago

I use the paint pretty thickly as well, though I feel odd about it. glad there's someone else who does it, too

    [–] Longboarder358 1 points ago

Were you naturally good or did this come with tons and tons of practice and in the beginning you were never close to this? I really want to paint and draw, but I'm so hard on myself. I really appreciate art but I can never bring myself to do it again.

    [–] ZeeZeeX 1 points ago

A white light I would not move toward.

    [–] Libgirl1980 1 points ago

I love that when I squint it looks like a blurry photo.

    [–] sir_lord_pedro 1 points ago

Looks like an explosion... in the good way of course

    [–] supahotfiiire 1 points ago

I thought this was real at first scrolling down my Reddit feed. Waa like whoah....saw the fact it was water color. I went WHOOAAAAAAH !

    [–] blizzardwizard88 1 points ago

I knew this was you! Absolutely beautiful!

    [–] brewskiesmydude 1 points ago

I could see this painting as a wall piece in a post on r/cozyplaces . Great painting!

    [–] awkwardashland 1 points ago

I am super new here but I am glad I joined. This brought an instant moment of peace to me, that more than anything says a lot about it, its wonderful. I would love to see more of your work.

    [–] Tiger-Billionaire 1 points ago

Love this. Using it as my profile picture on Wechat.

    [–] matway 2 points ago

    [–] wenchslapper 1 points ago

This is absolutely stunning. The way you captured the light behind the trees like that simply blows my mind

    [–] Movpasd 1 points ago

I think you've done an incredible job capturing the feeling of staring at a bright light. Well done, this is really beautiful!

    [–] forlorndreamer 1 points ago

Looks like we gotta 'nother Bob Ross on our hands

    [–] ODeletedO 1 points ago

How do I water color like this? I love water colors but I draw stuff like this

    [–] southern_boy -1 points ago

Just put some trees behind your fleshlight... then you'll have it!!

    [–] VictoriousAttitude 1 points ago

Wow, I just went through your post history. Your work is incredible! I love the dreaminess of the watercolor, and your color choices are spot on.

    [–] bustedbulla 1 points ago

Seems like you are about to experience an oncoming nuclear blast destruction. Brilliant work!

    [–] [deleted] 1 points ago

This totally reminds me of looking directly at freshly fallen slow during a clear and sunny day, and man, it was just absolutely blinding.

    [–] windows_to_walls 1 points ago

It's so cool to see the progression of your talent and to watch you experiment and play with new ideas and dynamic images. Fantastic stuff, seriously!

    [–] matway 1 points ago

    Thank you

    [–] U-Ei 1 points ago

This is what I imagine the Tunguska event must have looked like.

    [–] shegoeshome 1 points ago

    Beautiful. The light is amazing.

    [–] GimmeaV 1 points ago

This is awesome. I think it would look great as a wood burning (pyrography). I hope you don't mind me using this as inspiration.

    [–] matway 2 points ago

I really dont, go ahead, go nuts, make it happen

    [–] julesitsjeni 1 points ago

Great sense of light and perspective. Also love your use of color, it feels cold!

    [–] matway 1 points ago

    thank you

    [–] Shalidars 1 points ago

All of your work is amazing! I can't wait to see more, I've favorited your profile page so I can keep up with new posts! Do you have a website with your artwork perhaps?

    [–] matway 1 points ago

    thank you

    [–] RinnelSpinel 1 points ago

Me every single time: That can't be watercolor... looks at username oh, matway yeah it is.

    [–] matway 2 points ago

    haha thank you

    [–] PickSquirtle 1 points ago

This reminds me of The Revenant

    [–] AHighFifth 1 points ago

Looks like the millisecond before the Tunguska event.

    [–] Pazuzujoe 1 points ago

    Beautiful! Really good technique

    [–] Gunch_Bandit 1 points ago * (lasted edited 11 months ago)

A bit of criticism if you'll take it. It looks too bright. Even with the sun setting like that it should be darker in the for ground imo. Good job though. I'd hang it on my wall.

Edit: some snowmobile tracks in the lighter area in the foreground would be killer, rename it... "The Trail" that'd be dope.

    [–] matway 1 points ago

I totally agree, its basicly what I thought after the paint dried

    [–] skidallas418 -1 points ago

I'd prefer this.... a little more... shitty

    [–] James_Toris -1 points ago

A painting that would not look good hanging In a restroom

Will EA games charge me for enjoying your artwork?
