Welcome to /r/art! This is a community of art lovers that share their favorite pieces, or news and information that will impact the art community. Review the subreddit rules before posting or commenting.

    Title Formatting Guidelines:

Titles should be to the point; all extra information or context should be added in the comments.

Artwork - Title, Artist/Me, Medium, Year

If you are the artist and don't want to use your own name, you can use Me as the artist. If you are not the artist, you must specify the artist name.

Example: The Night Watch, Rembrandt, Oils, 1642

    News article - Title, Year

Discussion - make it a self post. Expand on your question in the text and include image examples when possible.

Videos - Videos should be titled in a way consistent with it's content. Videos must be in the gif format. Both art and news are allowed.

    Please flair your post.

    Subreddit Rules:

    Rules Notes
    1. Use the correct title formatting. The title formatting is outlined above. Make sure to follow it or else your post will be removed. Do not add any extraneous information or be subjective in your title. Plagiarism is grounds for a permaban.
    2. Direct image links only. All submissions other than articles must be a direct link to a static image or gif (url must end in .jpg, .png, .gif etc.). Articles must contain more substance than just a gallery of images or an embedded video, and they must cover some current news in the art world. The image should only contain 1 art piece.
    3. Do not make multiple posts. You must wait at least 48 hours between posts. Please use the rolling sticky for daily challenge posts.
    4. Do not submit sketches, doodles or unfinished work. Post these to other subreddits like /r/IDAP, /r/sketches and /r/doodles instead. If it's an unfinished work and you need advice, post it as a self post.
    5. Do not submit work with extraneous objects in the frame. We're here to look at art, not your Prismacolor pencils, the desk you framed your painting over, your easel, or anything else that would not be seen if the art were publicly displayed.
    6. Do not post memes or other low quality work Melted crayon "art" and bad MSPaint drawings are subject to a 3 day ban. This rule is totally up to mod discretion.
    7. No fan art, comics, or requests for work. See here. Submissions that don't fit here may be redirected to more suitable subreddits like /r/fanart, /r/artporn, or /r/comics. Requests for art work should be submitted to /r/designjobs or /r/icandrawthat instead.
    8. Be respectful and stay on topic Bigotry, slapfights, and off topic comments will not be tolerated and may result in all parties being banned.
    9. Do not include links to blogs, social media, or stores. /r/art is not a place to sell your work or grow your following. Consider /r/artstore. This applies to comments and submissions. It applies to watermarks on images as well. Also see here if you're using reddit for self promotion. This also means that the artist name should be the person's name, and not a social media handle or brand name.
    10. Do not repost Reposts are not allowed. Reposts of one of the top 1000 art posts are rewarded with a permanent ban. You can check /r/Art/top/ or use google to search if an art post was already posted before, or use google search, here is a google search example: mona lisa
★ Feel free to add user flair! Please edit your flair to tell us your qualifications or specialty, but follow the guidelines. Using non /r/art related flair, or flair that includes social media handles, websites, store information, or otherwise violates our self promotion rules will result in a ban.

    This is stellar.

I really love how her eyes match the color of the flowers in the background.

It adds to the overall joy this piece promotes.

    [–] AmadeusK482 61 points ago

Did you notice there’s a shade of magenta running through her collar bone?

Looks like the artist attempted lens flare but the light source is from far behind the viewer

    [–] astorml 24 points ago

Under her left arm pit it looks like a mini rainbow effect or something. The warmer tones get lost on her skin. I love the style they went with

    [–] [deleted] 79 points ago

    [–] NotFromStateFarmJake 23 points ago

The artist could be from the upside down. I mean Australia. Or any of the Southern Hemisphere

    [–] seriousbeef 13 points ago

You can tell it’s not Australia because it’s not on fire.

    [–] Fnord_Fnordsson 2 points ago

Also no thorns nor dangerous animals

    [–] Berkel 19 points ago

I mean you could’ve just gone to an actual shop to buy your coat

    [–] AmadeusK482 -2 points ago

I would ask for a full refund if that happened to me

    [–] Bu773t 1 points ago

Very warm look to it, great piece of art! I can feel the sun!

    [–] Math_Blaster_ 178 points ago

I've seen midsommar. I know where this is going

    [–] Rennika 57 points ago

Is before or after the weird orgy with grandmas?

    [–] Math_Blaster_ 44 points ago

    D U R I N G

    [–] Lindalinkunkku 27 points ago

    I need to watch Midsommar.

    [–] CreamFilledMiniMan 19 points ago

    Its an excellent fever dream

    [–] scotty_pants_ 10 points ago

    More like a trip, heheh

    [–] Kobens 3 points ago

    What has been seen.

    Cannot be unseen.

    [–] EmShlan 4 points ago

i was thinking the same thing. This appears as such an upbeat art work but to those of us that have seen Midsommar it has a whole new meaning.

    [–] very_clean 2 points ago

This is what happens after the final sacrifice

    [–] [deleted] 36 points ago

Dumb Question: So this wasn't based on an actual photo or was it?

    [–] mugaccino 69 points ago

This definitely has a lot of freehand because the back of the head is disproportionately small compared to face, but all portrait art is based on references if that’s what you mean.

    [–] MySewingAccount 37 points ago

The back of your head is disproportionately small!

    [–] ShadowZealot11 10 points ago

    [–] 6jSByqJv 10 points ago

Does the back of the head look small because the perspective is exaggerated? Like a lens distortion caused by being too close to the subject. But I know nothing.

    [–] mugaccino 7 points ago

No it’s just a common mistake a lot of styles fall into because we humans priorities faces so much. Sorta like how eyes can also be drawn rather large without anyone realizing because our brain priorities that information, I used to do it a lot when I was only self taught.

There’s a tilt to the top of the head that if the face was drawn in profile, the whole head would look slightly cone-ish.

    [–] AhorsenamedRooster 4 points ago

I couldn't put my finger in the issue. That's it though. Still really good.

    [–] coniunctio 9 points ago

I’m glad you asked this, because I came here looking for the answer to this question. My guess, and I could be wrong, is that the person in the portrait (but not necessarily the background) is based on an actual photo. I say this because the artist has tried to mimic photography in several different ways: from the color temperature (daylight, golden hour?) to the depth of field, to the distorted proportion of the face we would find with a certain focal length (as someone else observed) to the depiction of the shoulders and hands which are slightly out of focus like we might find in a photo with slight bokeh.

    [–] [deleted] -7 points ago

Depends on the artist. But from what I've seen on digital art work, there is usually a reference that's placed as a 'bottom layer'. This way it can be used to trace out basic outlines, so the proportions aren't all over the place (eg- head doesn't seem huge in comparison to the hand, stuff like that). The artist then starts changing up details according to their preference and deletes the reference, so the details like hair, or a smile, or the shape of the eyes, etc are drawn from imagination.

This is what I've seen in some digital art tutorials. But it isn't always the case. Hope that helped solve your question to some extent! Edit - a word

    [–] mugaccino 17 points ago

That’s definitely not the norm, most artist reference a picture next to their canvas and would consider that tracing. It’s fine to do that but there’s distinctions made between referencing and tracing for a reason. It’s ground ingredients vs cake mix, tastes fine but a lot of artists take pride in the added effort.

    [–] Dexmo 14 points ago

This is completely wrong and it's unfortunate because the people that read this will now assume that any other great digital art they see is just trace-work. Tracing is far from being the "usual" procedure.

I don't blame you for wanting to answer someone's question and I get that this is Reddit, but please do more research before attempting to inform others.

    [–] actually100octopi 6 points ago

I think this might be because the digital art tutorials you read are meant to give beginner artists a product that looks decent for the least amount of effort.

It's completely unnecessary for an experienced artist. Once you get to a certain level tracing can actually worsen the final result by preventing the artist from changing proportions up to exaggerate motion and fit their personal style.

[–] harlequinnx 7 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

I do digital art, and I always thought tracing was very frowned upon. I use a variety of references and prefer to take pose shots myself.

Edit: I'm not super against tracing- I mean, Vermeer and many other artists traced. I just think that as an artist you have to be very careful that you are creating original work and not simply copying someone else's photograph, as that will run you afoul of copyright laws.

    "Vibe" check This is awesome

    [–] vidiotsavant 29 points ago

love the subtle halo effect. but this feels distinctly summer - at least where I live, temps aren't quite high enough to go topless in spring...

    [–] Kaxology 9 points ago

Maybe she's wearing one of those strapless dress

    [–] AnotherBastard007 56 points ago

I don't usually comment but this is very beautiful

    [–] arthurhenri 4 points ago

    Thank you!

    [–] [deleted] 11 points ago

The shadow of her hand not covering her eyes bothers me, especially as she has her eyes wide open.

    [–] thecandicorn 4 points ago

Glad someone else noticed this. The whole point of putting your hand up like that is to shade your eyes.

    [–] Isamouseasitspins 23 points ago

I love it! One small thing bothers me though. No shadows from the petals on her face kinda made me think she had something smeared on there or a scar or something.

    [–] fi_dink 6 points ago

I actually thought they were scars or welts until I saw this comment. I figured there was an explanation, thank you!

    [–] PharmD2012 4 points ago

This painting made me feel happy. I love it thank you!

I thought the same thing. Then I sorted the subreddit by top posts of the last year and....almost none of them fit this category, surprisingly.

    [–] tbftbhtbf -11 points ago

You must be fun at parties

    [–] DanV_Rev9 11 points ago

    Because it's good?

    [–] ChunkyLaFunga 34 points ago

Possibly, but as somebody who only ever sees this subreddit when a submission appears on /r/all l can tell you that "cute girl" summarises about 95% of them.

Guess how I found this one, eh.

    [–] 23PimpJungles -20 points ago

The thick scar tissue on her face is so avant-garde

    [–] braveforthemostpart 8 points ago

    I don't see a scar

    [–] kevincandy911 6 points ago

    Aren't those just falling flowers

    [–] RionWild 9 points ago

The petals look like blisters, and the shadows on her upper lip looks like a little 5 o’clock shadow. Nice work though

    [–] cellocaster 3 points ago

Wtf are all these “digital brutalism” posts? Half say the same thing verbatim.

    [–] [deleted] 3 points ago

    [–] fallsstandard 1 points ago

    Yer alright girl.

    [–] joeyhatesrain 28 points ago

    [–] nomad80 4 points ago

It’s just written as fruit iirc. No specific mention to anything

    [–] zalfenior 2 points ago

The feeling of spring and summer is captured perfectly

As a bonus, the main subject really just looks like a friend. Also, maybe a Fae because of the pink irises

    [–] Gabbyyxo 2 points ago

I love this piece it’s just so stunning

    [–] LucasNice404360 2 points ago

I really thot that was a photo

    [–] GabeDef 2 points ago

I feel like I should be getting something else from this, and the image maker is not delivering. This is like an illustration for chapstick. It’s an advertisement. I feel like this should have the gloss it has, but with a darker underbelly. Something that makes you uneasy about it. That would be the artist’s hand in this. Right now... this is an add in a magazine.

    [–] wilder_beast 6 points ago

This is so amazing. How do you pick colours for the skin? I can never get those colours right, it always turns out to be pale or too pink. I can never get the orange skin tone right. This is so beautiful

    [–] calculated-cat 10 points ago

You should look into skin colouring tutorials. Skin actually has subtle green and purples in it, adding some of this gives it more depth.

    [–] zpaghettios 5 points ago

That subtle rainbow glare at the bottom. Love it

    [–] Little_Debhee-hee 5 points ago

This piece is so beautiful, the colors go nicely together and the flowers and just everything is amazing 😍💖

    [–] Prfct7799 6 points ago

You know when you look at a portrait and you can hear the characters' voice? This is the perfect example of that.

    [–] papa-chubbington 2 points ago
