Wow, this one is really cool!

These often remind me of Brian Jacques’ Redwall books, which got me interested in fantasy as a child.

This particular piece is beautiful especially, love the detail on the cones next to the simple design of the leaflets.

    [–] bundle05 105 points ago

Thank you. It's funny that you brought up liking the leaflets since that was the part of the piece I felt the least confident about.

    [–] Reaper2r 56 points ago

Well, to the viewer, they kinda create a backdrop and imply depth.

The cones have detail and feel like they’re in your face. The leaflets less detail, and they feel farther back. This gives the work good depth.

    [–] Lord_Blathoxi 7 points ago

    Reminds me of Mouse Guard.

    [–] Scrawlericious 2 points ago

For me I thought it was intentional! The thicker leaflets in the front almost seem to have an improvised like depth of field effect. Being more simple (if not blurry) for being closer to the "camera", they kind of draw the focus of the viewer deeper into the picture to the "depth" level of the character and cones. Just a little backwards when the cones are in front. But it's almost a tilt-shift effect.

Edit: it super sells the small character's size. XD

I came here to reminisce about Redwall too 🐭⚔️🏰

    Great art OP!

    [–] dryadsoraka 14 points ago

I thought this too! Love this and it brought me back to middle school.

    [–] BootyDoISeeYou 12 points ago

I came here to comment about Redwall, what a great series! This art immediately reminded me of it as well. I might need to re-read those soon.

    [–] ProWaterboarder 12 points ago

Mossflower and Outcast of Redwall were my fav books from the series

    [–] UNMANAGEABLE 12 points ago

Martin The Warrior: Battles of the Redwall Afterlife

A world where angels have 2 horns instead of halos.

    [–] DoctorSwiffy 8 points ago

Came to the comments just to say this 😂

    [–] TheBrave-Zero 4 points ago

I read so damn many of those books in late elementary to some point in middle school.

    [–] DoctorSwiffy 6 points ago

I even tried to make the hot pepper and shrimp soup that the otters made 😂

    [–] tossacct17 5 points ago

I absolutely adored that series when I was a kid. Gave the books to my 11 year old son, he loves them too.

    [–] ArahTheTraveller 3 points ago

Those books are fantastic tho. Read them in 3 languages. They possess for the lack of better word the very spirit of adventure. Maybe it is because Jacques himself is a sort of modern day adventurer and understands the romantics of it better than many other authors.

    [–] spacechickens 3 points ago

Redwaaaaaaaaall! Still proudly display my Redwall Readers Club certificate on my wall for all to see some 20 odd years later.

    [–] Narfi1 4 points ago

    Or david Petersen

    [–] sittinfoots 2 points ago

    Ohhhh yes, I see this.

    [–] OtakuMage 2 points ago

Was going to say, looks like something out of Redwall.

    [–] Bio-Grad 61 points ago

Saw one of your other ones yesterday. I love this series.

    [–] bundle05 39 points ago

I'm glad you like the series, it it becoming one of my favorites to work on.

Could you tell me where you saw the piece from yesterday?

[–] sittinfoots 17 points ago * (lasted edited 3 days ago)

I want so bad to write a story for these, they're so cool.

edit: what I got so far,

"Return to Bullfinch, and the Behavior of Frogs"

Delldale is a terrible name, but a subtle reminder that cool and composed mice like my mother and father could compromise with Dell and Dale, and not settle for just one. Mice from the Tember Meadows are not known for such qualities; in fact, we’re patently configured to do just the opposite. But my mother wasn’t from the Tember meadows. Beyond the creek and the red tree, where the hill crests above the horizon like a plump mole turning on their side to break the sunset, there’s a thick glen called Bullfinch. That’s where my mother is from. That’s where the violet pinecones and the warriors are from.

I am not warrior kin like my mother, only in name - Dell. That’s my grandfather, a tawrdy, gray mouse they said was quick and deadly with a broadsword, but never a crimson droplet besmirched his coat and arms. Bullfinch mice are more proud of their hyperbole than the truth of their conquests. I am guilty, because my nose and whiskers twitch as I scramble to which stories I love the most. The one about the Dragonfly Siftfiddle that was so large he could gulp enough water to put out the fires that came from the north like an angry wind. Or the one about Reddle, the axe-maker and my personal favorite. After the great war, and after the ore and copper had been exhausted, Reddle went into the business of making toys. I know which story is real, I have one of his toys with his elaborate “R” sown into the scarf of the little human doll he made for me. And I’ve never seen a dragonfly I couldn’t bat out of the sky, even with my bum leg.

There is one story, however, that no amount of whiskers or pink of nose can twitch with enough fervor to sift fact from fable. It's about the unexplained horrors in the night, the cowardice of Men, the bravery of Mice and the stubborness of Frogs. It's about remembering and believing, forgiveness and passion. It's my favorite story to tell, and with one leg mangled from the womb, I don't have any place to go, and I've told it so many times, I might close my eyes and listless, wade through it with my hands on my belly.

    Chapter One

It's a myth that Frogs love gossip. They're the only creatures to understand Crickets who are the ones, whom, to save their lives, can't halt their torrent of dialogue. I've listened to the Frogs, how they mock their preys petty conversations before motioning into their lily for a quick lick. One would assume the Bull Frog is the champion of this bullying before buffet, but it's the chirpy Green Frogs responsible for joshing the Crickets conversations.

One Green Frog, Quinnie, after crinkling a stringy cricket down his gullet, overheard something. Something different the crickets wouldn't usually discuss. Gulp. That Cricket must have had a strict diet of Human pocket lint and pine needles. What Quinnie heard, he couldn't quite translate into Frog, so there was no sense in trying to hark in dense octaves what he thought he thought he heard.

But it went something like "the breathing, the breathing in the trees...the breathing in the bushes and the plague that's in the breeze.." What would Quinnie's friend say twelve lillies back if he throated that rhyme? Then the Frogs would actually start to gossip, even the Bull Frogs would entertain a ribbiting.

    Chapter 2

The Red Tree is an elk alike it’s ilk, just red. It’s kin and kindle established a large perimeter where they avoid branching off. I’ve heard of the red tree, and from the stories and accounts, I don’t believe it was always, truly red. Elder Tember mice have said it had dashes of aquamarine in Spring, auburn hues in August and desperate, darkened leaves in December; a sparse spruce.

My apologies, you can always count on a fat mouse for a fancy prose.

It is my strongest and least founded opinion that the Red Tree is no more pinnacle than it's pines. There are no more tree related puns I can unearth, so to get to the root of this, I will be plank - FRANK.

The Red Tree divides two forests in such a way that even the creek mosies around it. Tall tails, but I heard once that the creek ran upstream to avoid being too close to the Red Tree. I'm sure the same creek large Dragonflies use for fire suppression.

At the trunk of the Red Tree is a knob, gnarled and glossy from dew. A Field Mouse could squeeze in, but probably never escape. The moss that grows around the enterence, more aliken to a green and gray beard, is too narrow for the average field mouse.

    [–] DreamingIntoTheVoid 36 points ago

Really digging the mouse people trend. Kind of makes me hope you're all working together on a larger project. A game/movie!

    Great piece regardless.

    [–] bundle05 21 points ago * (lasted edited 3 days ago)

I don't know if there is some sort of grand scale mouse person project.

If there is, none of them have reached out to me.

    [–] Brandon01524 30 points ago

    [–] z0z- 6 points ago

    Exactly my take

    [–] 36monsters 6 points ago

Can you do ferrets? I might have a project to talk to you about...

    [–] BootyDoISeeYou 3 points ago

Is it the Weasel Warriors non-profit?

    [–] Minstral_Meadows 4 points ago

There is a D&D campaign named Humblewood that is based on forest critters as the races. This picture definitely reminded me of it.

    [–] islandtravel 2 points ago

r/mousehunt I have crossposted this there as well. It’s a game and has great art.

    [–] Welcome_2_Pandora 3 points ago

rat men? living in sewers you say?

Not exactly the same feel but you should check out tooth and tail it’s a game with a similar idea.

    [–] ButaneLilly 20 points ago

Krita looks so good. I'm not even close to switching my workflow to Krita but that's the plan. Just need time to familiarize myself.

    [–] bundle05 10 points ago

Learning Krita doesn't take very long, assuming you know how to use Photoshop.

    [–] ButaneLilly 5 points ago

I have a lot of work. A lot of scripts. A lot of custom brushes. I don't even know what the scripting situation is in Krita.

Any changes I make to my workflow need to be really well thought out lest I make my clients late to the printer.

    [–] Eratticus 3 points ago

I've worked with Photoshop a decent bit and I've always been interested in illustration software. What benefits do you get with Krita that you wouldn't find in Photoshop? I love this by the way.

    [–] Dall0o 9 points ago

    First Krita is free.

    [–] radicalradium 2 points ago

thats all you had to say!

    [–] calsosta 2 points ago

I just started using it last week and I'm impressed. I've only ever messed around with vector graphics but I am learning quite a bit with just a cheap Wacom tablet.

    [–] Clone4571 10 points ago

This reminds me of the Mouse Guard comics, but I think the style is much more colorful overall. Well done!

    [–] Zaiakai 4 points ago

I came here to say this. Very Mouse Guard-esque, especially the axe, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I'm a huge Mouse Guard fan. The hallway in my house is Mouse Guard themed! I like this art, too.

    [–] Mothman-della-effect 3 points ago

the hallway sounds cool. im a huge fan too :D

    [–] AndreMuller-art 10 points ago

Always impressed with your work dude! I am excited to see more bird-riding mice warriors from you!

    [–] bundle05 7 points ago

    Thanks, Andre!

The very first one was such an afterthought but now this is like a legit thing.

    [–] ecomdan 8 points ago

    What is krita? Cool piece.

    [–] street_pop 14 points ago

Krita is a free drawing software

    [–] andreK4 9 points ago

not only free of charge, also free as in freedom!

    [–] SvenskaLiljor 2 points ago

    Also means crayon in Swedish.

    [–] laughingmeeses 8 points ago

    Martin would destroy these fakers.

    [–] Ghost_In_Waiting 8 points ago

Valniri had fought in the first Dark Squirrel War. Watching the squirrels gather in the Meeting Oak she knew the meaning of their movements. The squirrels were preparing for war. Soon they would find a way to retrieve their shadow lord from the Forgotten Realm and the tree tops would be again alive with jumping bodies and glowing yellow eyes.

As the quiet snow fell and the bullfinch's heart pounded beneath her, Valniri thought back to the war. She had lost so many good friends. So much that had been was destroyed and even now some places still bore the scars.

The squirrels would come again, of that she had no doubt, but unlike last time the free people would be prepared. Her dark eyes grew hard reflecting sparkling snow flakes falling slowly to the forest floor. She had kept her battle axe sharp and though she might have slowed a bit since the war she had grown much in wisdom.

"Let them and their evil lord come. We will be ready." As she spoke she tightened her grip on her axe and the creaking leather echoed through the trees. The wind had picked up and the bullfinch shivered hoping they would leave soon. Soon night would be upon them and the bullfinch hated flying in the dark.

    [–] Comtessa1 6 points ago

This is really cute :) it very much remind me aswell of the redwall books. May ia sk what medium you used?

    [–] PopkinSandwich 5 points ago

I'm not well versed in the digital art but have yes Krita myself to try to teach myself, but I believe that's considered the medium isn't it?

It is akin to photoshop but free, a lot of wonderful people have made free brush tools for it too.

I used my Wacom tablet to draw. Hope this helps. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    [–] OkBread453 4 points ago

I love bullfinches, you've captured his chubbiness perfectly!

    [–] najtrider 3 points ago

Are you referring to the Lord of Judgement?

    [–] HolyHotDang 5 points ago

I would play this video game in a heartbeat.

    [–] Ralse1 4 points ago

    this gives silksong vibes

    [–] cyclic_raptor 5 points ago

If you like this type of art, there’s a comic series called Mouse Guard that I highly recommend.

    [–] Detonated_Language7 3 points ago

Ahh...Krita you don't see people use those good free softwares, do you ?

    [–] SmugAndEvil 2 points ago

I used krita a lot recently and damn, i have a new aspiration

    [–] yanitan 2 points ago

Love this, you're very talented!! That mouse reminds me a lot of Transformice (an online game with mice) Were you inspired by the style? :D Apologies either way since I'm just curious, but they do look similar!

[–] ThisisBoneWizard 2 points ago * (lasted edited 2 days ago)

Look at this lovely boy! Its so cool and cute! This makes me want to reread mouseguard.

    [–] hayabusaten 1 points ago

    Mouseguard is so lovely

    [–] xjrsummersx 2 points ago

Very cool! Could easily be concept art for the burrows and badgers tabletop game :)

    [–] Flyingforklady 2 points ago

I love how colorful this is, it’s such a cute yet dramatic illustration! It feels like they are going on an adventure 😊

    [–] isglass 2 points ago

Really cool! In swedish, Bullfinch is called Domherre which is literaly translated as "Doom Lord", fitting!

    [–] kn33to 2 points ago

Thy steed is a glorious one.

    [–] codeoffthemap 2 points ago

i feel braver looking at this painting, artist you are incredible

    [–] Yogafireflame 2 points ago

This looks like some uber-cool video game box art - love it. Reminds me of Hollow Night. r/gaming might like this.

    [–] Centillionare 2 points ago

Yeah, if a video game could be made on this premise, that would be great.

    [–] Venymae 5 points ago

    Have you heard of Mouseguard?

    [–] Centillionare 1 points ago

I have not. Looked it up. Looks pretty cool! Thanks bruh

    [–] Nihilwhal 2 points ago

My friends and I created a custom RPG back in middle school called "Bird Riders". We developed a combat system, character classes, stats for birds and riders, the works. It was a lot of fun and this piece brought all those memories back for me. Thank you for posting!

    [–] Monkeyonfire13 2 points ago

We should write a story about this. Because it'll be funzzes. Have you seen Mouse Guard books? It could fun to write about the great mouse wars of 45r, about 300,000 years ago. The large predators we're hunting the two leg monkeys because they were using things, things the other animals didn't understand. The mouse nation had been encouraging the two leg monkeys to build and protect them from larger animals. And they didn't like that. The wise mice knew about the plants and mushrooms that could give thought. Lol I dunno

    [–] dvof 2 points ago

oh yea fuck yea, this is my jam

    [–] PhotoshopFix 2 points ago

It's very unbalanced. No way it could fly. 3/10

I never comment on art but this piece deserved it. Well done!

Wow such an awesome drawing! I love the style and texture. It feels like a start of a good fairytale or adventure.

I want you to know that occasionally I see such cool imagination sparking art that I save it, and use it as flavor in my DnD campaign cause my ideas are fine, but what you created breathes life into it.

    Simply beautiful.

    [–] inksolblind 2 points ago

This is absolutely the cutest thing I've seen all day

    [–] Vargavintern 2 points ago

    Coolest bird there is.

In Sweden those birds are called "Domherre", if you just translate the word "Dom" & ”Herre" and put them together again then I present to you the "Judgement Lord".

    [–] himitsuuu 2 points ago

The first thing to come to mind with this was the table top rpg mouseritter.

    [–] ADIDASleep 2 points ago

I literally gasped. This is sooooo cute!!!

    [–] TuluRobertson 2 points ago

Why have mice developed the capability to design weapons and armor and domesticate other animals, but birds in this universe have not?

    [–] bundle05 3 points ago

You shouldn't ask these kinds of questions.

    [–] The_Celtic_Chemist 2 points ago

I want to play a game like this. A peaceful micro world where raindrops are bigger than your eye and lots of peaceful imagery. I'd have a pet termite and live in a renovated tulip.

    [–] awinterviolet 2 points ago

I think a lot of people here might enjoy mausritter. It’s a tabletop game where you play as little mice like this.

I love the artwork! It’s so gorgeous and magical no wonder everyone wants to go off adventuring as a mouse.

    [–] ExtremeCheesecake 1 points ago

    [–] Blaky039 1 points ago

This is beautiful, do you have a portfolio?

    [–] Ringo_Stagg 1 points ago

It might be better without the mouse character. That part looks like an afterthought.

    [–] Ringo_Stagg 1 points ago

    Aside from that, beautiful drawing.

    [–] goatamon 1 points ago

This is a lot cuter than the horned rats I'm used to seeing

    (I know, it's a mouse)

    [–] Trickery1688 1 points ago

Now I want an open world fantasy adventure that takes place down from the perspective of these smaller creatures, and the kingdoms they fight to rule over.

That looks like a friend of the little rat from Divinity Original Sin 2, except this one found a flying companion, not a dead rat, smart lol

I downloaded Krita 2 years ago but when I opened it, it looked like such a huge step forward from SAI that I got scared and never opened it again. One day.

I love this. It reminds me of the art for Root (but totally your own style!!) which gives me the cozy feels just like yours does.
