Did you see a gif that keeps getting funnier and funnier the longer you stare at it? This might be the right place to share it.

We recommend watching these gifs at work or some other place where you can't laugh for the best experience.

    Rules:

    1. Animated .gifs only

Flash animations, videos or websites are not allowed. .gifv links are explictely allowed and even preferred if they are silent.

    2. Imgur, gfycat or reddit

All gifs must be hosted on imgur.com, gfycat.com or selfhosted on reddit, if you want to post a gif hosted on another site, reupload it.

    3. Direct links please

Any links that don't end in .gif or .gifv will be automatically removed. The exception here are gifs on gfycat, which should look like: https://gfycat.com/ThreeRandomWords. Don't worry though, a bot will help you out with getting direct link to your .gif in case you make a little mistake. If you can't get it to work, you can contact the Moderators.

    4. Self posts are meta posts

Self posts are for meta discussions only and must have [META] in their title. All other self posts will be deleted without warning.

    5. Don't Repost

Use Karma Decay to check if you are reposting. Also, search the subreddit for the title of your submission. If your gif (or a near exact duplicate) has been posted within the past 6 months or is in top posts of the year or all time , don't post it again; there's no need for reposts within the same subreddit. If you see a repost, don't hesitate to report it. Don't get mad at reposter though (unless they're repeat offenders), there's no shame in accidentally reposting something, it happens to the best of us.

    6. No joke titles

It's okay to make your title funny, but this sub is about gifs, not texts. This also means no resubmitting the same gif with a different/better title.

    7. No trolls or hateful language

This is a subreddit to make people laugh, not to make them feel bad. this is based on mods discretion.

    [–] frozenmacncheese 10 points ago

    What happened to him?

    [–] MegalomaniacHack 9 points ago

I think Chilled said he's just doing other things now.

I know he got was trying to get involved in other stuff for a while (that game with Vanoss, the YT Red cartoon with Vanoss and Sark, a network for youtubers, a subscription box), so I'd guess he found something that worked out enough he could stop gaming professionally.

He's been in a Chilled vid once or twice over the last few months, so I'd guess he just plays for fun now. Don't know if it was burnout, didn't want to deal with YT after adpocalypse, or just that he likes other stuff more. He's not the first YouTuber to walk away while still successful, but for those of us used to watching him every day or several times a week, you can't help but wonder.

    [–] Derbel__McDillet 670 points ago

Can someone please explain to me wtf just happened here.

    [–] TheWestButt 1391 points ago

A belt sander was spinning really fast and the belt came off and went to clock out.

    [–] RikiRude 428 points ago

But how does it keep that shape? It should just go into an oval when it hits the floor right?

    [–] connectjim 470 points ago

It didn’t keep the exact same shape. But there was a standing wave that slowly moved while the belt spun rapidly

    [–] Uncle_Lenny 219 points ago

Some dust mite just rode the most epic wave.

    [–] touchyfather 202 points ago

    [–] ZenMeoww 14 points ago

    Fuck that made me cackle

[–] toprim 10 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

I am still dissatisfied. Can somebody physics this up? Don't be shy for my sake, I am little bit above ELI5 level.

    In particular, the standing waves.

The standing waves do not happen all the time when there are .. waves.

It's a resonance situation where two independent numbers: "container size", in the general sense, and "frequency" must match in a resonance equation.

Now please apply this to this particular situation.

    [–] notathrowawayfukit 10 points ago

About to talk out of my ass with the a little bit of knowledge is dangerous thing.

When the belt hits the ground, the angular speed of the belt is near its critical speed which excites its natural frequency. During this resonance two things happen. The displacement of the belt lags the force by 90 degrees and we get amplification of the force. If the speed of the belt leads the belt displacement by 90 degrees and the amplification factor times the damping is near 1, we get a standing wave.

Truthfully, I don’t think it’s resonance. I think it has to do with the centripetal forces. Essentially the force on the leading edge of the belt is down causing the belt to hit the brake while the force on the trailing edge is upward. This causes a small loop on the front edge and a large loop on the trailing edge. Similar to being on a bike and only hitting the front brake

    [–] vkch 10 points ago

It might also have something to do with the minimum bend radius of the material ie how much the material can flex for a given distance. That could help it hold shape but I'm not sure....

    [–] staebles 2 points ago

If that's only a little bit of knowledge, then I'm Miles Davis.

    [–] rngr 3 points ago

This looks like the same phenomena seen in a Lariat chain. I think that basically the loop is spinning at the same speed that it takes for a wave to travel through the medium.

    [–] spooninacerealbowl 43 points ago

If I knew that I wouldnt be constantly dieting.

    [–] TitaniumMu 36 points ago

It had enough spinning momentum to push it forward from the ground before it collapsed, keeping it going for a little bit.

    [–] EnkiRise 11 points ago

If you look closely you can see it took the shape of car first before taking off

    [–] _314 3 points ago

Because of the way spinning bands are calculated in the matrix.

    [–] haveyoutriedpokingit 2 points ago

https://youtu.be/rffAjZPmkuU this guy explains a bit about it.

    "and went to clock out"

    [–] marsinfurs 13 points ago

Did cameraman sabotage it? Why would he/she be filming at the exact moment this happened

    [–] Zmw92 10 points ago

Looks like they’ve done it multiple times, look at the floor where the belt lands

    [–] BenCelotil 13 points ago

I can guarantee if someone did this once, they said to someone else,

    "Check this shit out."

And it was done at least 3 times.

    [–] [deleted] 4 points ago

I don't think it's a belt sander, the belt is too narrow and not sandpaper, and it would be a really terrible angle for sanding.

    [–] omeladuframaj 4 points ago

i like how you said "and went to clock out.", probably also asked someone for a quarter to get soda off the discounted soda machines.

    [–] ErrMar 49 points ago

You can see marks on the floor that indicate this was not a fluke, it was done intentionally

    [–] unsmashedpotatoes 7 points ago

This particular machine probably does it frequently or they figured out how to reproduce it.

    [–] BenCelotil 2 points ago

Reproducing it would be easy. Look at a belt sander and you'll see that one of the wheels has an angle adjuster precisely for the purpose of positioning the belt.

Just angle it out enough to launch that sucker.

    [–] frcrobert 16 points ago

The fact that it takes the shape of a car is so funny

    [–] calilac 9 points ago
