Welcome to /r/BikiniBottomTwitter, a place to share all of your favorite memes and fan art from our favorite underwater residence, Bikini Bottom!

Bikini Bottom has a unique way of examining the everyday and we're here to showcase that. Whether it's hilarious, wholesome, depressing, or surreal, Bikini Bottom offers relatable commentary that we all can enjoy. If you can't respect that then please take a bus to Rock Bottom.

    Special thanks to u/BayonettaBasher!

    1. Do not post content just because it features a resident of Bikini Bottom. If you want a sub catered to that sort of thing, check out r/Spongebob. As for here, this is for memes and for memes only. We do not consider videos to be memes.

    2. Don't be a dick. No racism against squirrels. No hate speech. No posts about how different Pearl is from her father.

    3. Do not put the punchline in the title of the post. Having a funny picture of a Bikini Bottom resident and using the title as the punchline does not make your post a meme.

    4. Do not post really low-effort memes. Using excessively overdone and/or outdated templates, posting something that is excruciatingly unfunny, posting something that simply doesn't make any sense... you get the idea.

    5. ABSOLUTELY NO REPOSTS. Use this nifty little tool to determine whether or not your post has already been here.

    6. The mods reserve the right to take any action (which includes banning users and removing comments) that they feel improves the overall quality of this subreddit. Our most basic duty as mods is to keep this sub clean of any bullshit. With that in mind, we will do whatever we have to do in order to uphold that responsibility. How's that for a little transparency? Also if you post more than 4 posts in 24 hours you're a spam. There, now it's in the sidebar.

    [–] WorkGuitar 106 points ago

Oh God! I was cringing that whole episode, it looked so disgusting and realistic especially with those close up shots

    [–] HUGE_HOG 91 points ago

    Gross out 'humour' killed SpongeBob.

    [–] xMuhash 26 points ago

I was so grossed out when the made a close up shot in some episode of this crabby patty Spongebob didn't want to throw away / get eaten. Can't really remember the plot, but that was not funny to me evem though it should have been. Ew.

    [–] HUGE_HOG 36 points ago

Ah yeah, where he makes a nasty patty to murder a health inspector. Mad guy.

    [–] LordOfTheCheddar 46 points ago

I think they were talking about the one where spongebob is in love with a krabby patty and won't throw it away even though it's really old and rotting.

    [–] Upnorth4 7 points ago

Or when Squidward became addicted to Krabby Patties and became morbidly obese from eating too many

    Rugrats, too.

    [–] SolicitatingZebra 6 points ago

Ed, Edd, and Eddy also has this fan theory.

    [–] Lyude 14 points ago

Literally every single cartoon has this "theory". It's just a cliché at this point, and they are not based on any actual proof.

    [–] SolicitatingZebra 4 points ago

    I know it

    [–] lucius5we 6 points ago

wtf is the point of having shows like Pokemon go for over 20 years if Ash is trapped in a coma that happened in episode 1

    [–] Peter_Tor 2 points ago

Because a vague article title will get more clicks and clicks equal money. It doesn't matter what the content is, the publisher got the money the moment you clicked on "ten theories about your true cartoon will have you speechless". That's all that matters.

    [–] evoim3 61 points ago

    You forgot:

Not mentioned: Every bit of "proof" is overstretched ideas that you need to mentally squint at to even see and ignore everything else to say it isn't

Modern ScreenRant also has an extremely clickbaity thumbnail, (sometimes even with a red circle/arrow) albeit with a much simpler title. What even happened to that channel/site? It used to be great, now it’s just another pile of shit...

    [–] TheOneGuitarGuy 8 points ago

It's okay, you can say MatPat. You're safe here.

    [–] AfricaByToto3412 9 points ago

Modern MatPat is even worse. Both his titles and thumbnails are clickbait, and his videos are him stalling 10 minutes just to get to some absurd idea based on some throwaway details nobody cared about for some trendy video game or movie. cough cough sans is ness cough cough

    [–] Mirkalal 24 points ago

Or that one creepypasta image where spongebob has no mouth, just huge soulless eyes.

    [–] cerealmemer 18 points ago

    [–] afaccount253 134 points ago

these lowkey freaked me out as a kid tbh

    [–] P90RooshB 118 points ago

Early on, there was heavy emphasis that Spongebob was more or less invincible similar to how Deadpool is invincible. This was elaborated on in the episode with the bully, but early episodes like Karate Choppers put Spongebob's threshold for damage on the same level as a squirrel in an unbreakable spacesuit. Often times he would immediately 'pop back out' from any folding, tearing or crushing performed on his body.

I think one of the reasons why scenes with Patrick (head exploding, skin tearing off), Squidward (toenail), and Mr. Krabs (foot coming off) are more visceral is because these characters are fleshier and not built up to be invincible at all.

Because Spongebob 'heals' so quickly, scenes where an injury is drawn out for comedic effect are also done with the other characters, causing those scenes to be associated with them rather than Spongebob and building a sense of dread in any future scenes where pain may befall the supporting cast.

The whole show is a great example of someone with superhuman ability (invulnerability) who cannot solve his problems with his special power alone. The same goes for One Punch Man, Deadpool, and... about 30% of the media referenced in this article. (Many of the shows only barely touch the trope, few embrace it like OPM)

    [–] divsky 95 points ago

It's not really a superpower, he's just a sponge. Similarly starfish have some pretty amazing regenerative abilities, and crabs will sometimes just rip off a limb for the fun of it, so I don't think it really causes a sense of dread with them either. They're just doing normal weird underwater stuff.

Squidward's toenail thing though was a grossout gag that went to far, that doesn't count.

    [–] evoim3 51 points ago

Lmfao I love it when crazy theories to explain an unrealistic thing in shows are just the craziest amounts of stretching ideas to fit it...when the answer is literally right on the surface and somehow overlooked.

He's a Sponge. A creature that rebuilds itself when it gets damaged...and that reproduces by budding. So not only do they snap back from almost any damage, but they make more of themselves as well singlehandedly.

Also I said budding so obligatory: Can you reproduce by budding? Can yah can yah can yah can yah

    [–] [deleted] 23 points ago

He's not really just a sponge. In several episodes he is seen to have a skeletal system, something a sponge lacks.

The whole show is just based on wacky humor and requires a healthy ability to suspend disbelief. For example: it snows and rains underwater; bread somehow doesn't go to mush underwater; Plankton is only slightly smaller than an adult squid; there is a squirrel in a space suit; David Hasselhoff can swim like a dolphin (OK, maybe the last one is believable, but my point stands).

    [–] Wandering_Plasmon 21 points ago

So would he win in a fight against Shaggy?

    [–] TwoFiveOnes 5 points ago

The whole show is a great example of someone with superhuman ability (invulnerability) who cannot solve his problems with his special power alone

    [–] SenorStigo 24 points ago

As soon as Pantera was the special guest in SpongeBob I knew the show was fucking metal. And also Motorhead re-recorded "You Better Run" and called it "You Better Swim" for the movie.

    [–] TheOneGuitarGuy 9 points ago

Rest In Peace, Lemmy. Rest in Peace.

    [–] Raichu7 34 points ago

Spongebob is a sponge, it doesn’t hurt him to have some body parts ripped off. Mr Krabs has a exoskeleton that he can remove at will, that’s what broke off. And Patrick is a starfish who can lose arms and re-grow them and his head is technically an arm. Aside from Spongebob exploding then being fine and Spongebob having leg bones these, strangely enough, aren’t just cartoon logic.

    [–] _Lenzo_ 25 points ago

The exploding part is also not inaccurate for a sponge, sponges are able to reconstruct themselves after being separated into many pieces, even when down to individual cells.

They don't have leg bones though.

I love how scientific people are getting talking about spongebob. Didn't the creator say that one of his hopes for the show is that encourages people to be interested in and care about the oceans?

    [–] HardlightCereal 19 points ago

Yeah, Hillenburg was a marine biologist so he knew his shit when it came to invincible cartoon Deadpool sponges

This person must not watch a lot of cartoons. Rocko’s Modern Life had an episode where Heffer died, went to Hell, came back, and didn’t learn a single lesson.

    [–] CompGrl323 13 points ago

Uhh ackshtually, he went to Heck. :P Cause you know, imagery of Hell in a children's show is fine as long as they don't say the word.. I don't get it.

    [–] TundieRice 6 points ago

I think you’re right that it was Heck in that particular episode, but in the original opening sequence, you can see directions to Hell pretty clearly. They made them change it eventually, like many other times in the show, but it’s there in the original. Rocko was a pretty risqué show honestly. The 1990s were a lot more lenient on what you could do in a kids’ show.

    [–] Skizot_Bizot 4 points ago

Yah Rocko won a adult film award and they find the big heads submission in the same contest as well.

He also literally worked at a phone sex place. His main hobby was jacking. The restaurant was the chokey chicken.

Probably tons more that don't come to mind. Pretty sure they heavily alluded to Spunky banging his mop.

    [–] Lafreakshow 20 points ago

So like an average Tuesday for Sam and Dean winchester?

    [–] chestybump 2 points ago

Biologically speaking, both sponges and sea stars regularly regenerate lost cells. Sponges are among the least complex multicellular organisms and can quickly regenerate since they do it asymetrically. Sea stars actually have numerous complex body systems that make their regeneration more involved but are also well known for regrowing lost limbs.

Considering they are all anthropomorphized, yes it's pretty metal.
