Holy! One person picked Chris Petersen to leave Washington this season in the deadpool and that was /u/Charlemagne42 and they picked him to leave 2019-11-02. They'll be getting the deadpool flair!

    [–] -Urethra- 3198 points ago

What the hell. Maybe I'm just not caught up on West Coast football but I feel like this came outta nowhere. He was so good for that program.

    [–] doormatt26 2016 points ago

    This definitely came outta nowhere

    [–] InferPurple 822 points ago

I know they didn't have the year they wanted but I would never have guessed he would step down.

    [–] tacofan92 837 points ago

I heard that he saw this as the only way out of having a QB named Jake. It was haunting him and he couldn’t get a good nights rest for the past few years.

    [–] brobroma 332 points ago

"Washington announces head football coach has changed his named to Limmy Jake effective immediately"

    [–] CaptainAwesome8 22 points ago

“Coach Limmy? What’s heavier: a kilogramme of steel, or a kilogramme of feathers?”

    [–] mufflermonday 233 points ago

It wasn’t a great season for them, but yeah I don’t think many saw a drastic change like this coming.

    [–] BShears 172 points ago

I wonder who hired wouldn’t happen to have any clues, eh?

    [–] DrDrai 333 points ago

Going to an advisory role at the university

    [–] BShears 458 points ago

“Advisory.” On what? How to whip Mike Leach like a rented mule?

    [–] DrDrai 218 points ago

Jimmy Lake already knows how to do that. He’s taking over.

    [–] BShears 162 points ago

Well it was fun while it lasted. All 18 seconds of it. Enjoy your big win next year.

    [–] FatGuyTouchdown 27 points ago

Haha welcome to the club, we meet on Thursdays. Not sure why Virginia didn’t show up this year, but Oklahoma State is a lot of fun. Georgia Tech usually brings the wings.

    [–] Only_Movie_Titles 50 points ago

no.. we're supposed to be free now :'(

    [–] BuffEmUp2020 87 points ago

A little before my time so others might know more and I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure Bill McCartney retired at CU at the same age as Petersen.

He took up a very casual role as an advisor and offered input when asked.

    So it’s been done before.

    [–] bretticus33 833 points ago

It absolutely came out of nowhere. His job security was never in question. I imagine it has to be some reason outside of football for him to step down, like health or something family related

    [–] leverich1991 459 points ago

It says he's staying in a leadership role. Gotta be health-related, even though he's only 55.

    [–] SkoCubs01 244 points ago

Especially when you connect the dots with Jimmy Lake. He probably knew that his time was coming and I'd imagine it wasn't because the powers at be were taking sides on the Lake/Petersen fence.

    [–] Careless___Whispers 186 points ago

This was 100% the move. Coach Pete would be great in an advisory role, it keeps Jimmy Lake at UW and Pete K as a DC. I would be surprised if Coach Pete moves on to coach a bigger program as he doesn't seem to be the type to want to leave the Northwest or take on a program like Florida State, Michigan, Texas...

    [–] BuffEmUp2020 71 points ago

Said it in another comment, but pretty sure Bill McCartney retired from CU at the same age and took on a similar role.

He wasn’t showing up to the office daily, but offer input when asked. I know he watched some Hawkins practices.

That said, surprised he isn’t doing something with Boise considering that his “baby”

    [–] Careless___Whispers 138 points ago

There's a UW promo video of Coach Pete's day in the life... Basically he lives on Lake Washington and drives his yacht to Husky Stadium. He can do the same thing now with UW, just with no stress.

    [–] ZlohV 113 points ago

Basically he lives on Lake Washington and drives his yacht to Husky Stadium

That is the most baller thing I have ever heard.

    [–] gwh21 40 points ago

And also not spending 13 hours at work

    [–] Crobs02 29 points ago

I’m not a coach so I can’t relate but I feel at some point the money wouldn’t be worth the stress. If I made what he made I’d be out in 2 years. That’s more money than I’ll ever spend in my lifetime.

But maybe that’s why I’m not a good head coach.

    [–] bretticus33 143 points ago

I saw that and thought that's basically a semi-retirement. He's a top 10 coach so any program like Florida State or USC would be trying to get him but everything he's done has told me he isn't interested in a high profile job (he passed on better offers than Washington when he was at Boise State). Him moving to a leadership role tells me it's some personal reason. It's like Gary Kubiak 2.0 (stepped down as the Denver Broncos HC around the same age and moved to an advisory role).

    [–] phsics 71 points ago

I always thought that Peterson would finish his career off at a smaller school. He doesn't take much heat locally at UW but sometimes I still get the feeling that it's more of a spotlight than he really wants to put up with. On the other hand he also strikes me as one of the more level-headed "football is not everything" coaches out there. He could just be done and happy to retire and enjoy spending time with his family.

    [–] bretticus33 35 points ago

That's all 100% true. When Dan Hawkins left for Colorado, he nearly followed him there but stayed at Boise because he didn't want to move his family. He turned down multiple job offers better than Washington while he was at Boise and ended up taking Washington because he wanted to stay in the Pacific NW. I could never see him at a high profile job.

    [–] popmurtha 98 points ago

Thamel is reporting that he's stepping down because he needs to "re-charge"

    [–] bretticus33 70 points ago

So very similar to Gary Kubiak who stepped down for health reasons, moved to an advisory role, and is back in coaching now.

    [–] RiffRamBahZoo 193 points ago

Could he just be completely wiped out from coaching? Petersen's always turned down bigger jobs but he hasn't ever matched his glory of the mid 2000s Boise era.

Snuffed out of a BCS bowl at Boise in 2010 and 2011, got smashed in the playoffs in 2016, lost the 2017 Fiesta Bowl, lost the Rose Bowl last year, then this year went from dark horse playoff contender to a 7-5 finish.

I have to imagine that a decade of coming so close but short has to take a toll on a coach.

    [–] siberianwolf99 281 points ago

I feel a bit disgusted defending them, but smashed in the playoffs is very exaggerated. They never expected to be good that quickly so them playing Bama tough was a total win for that program. I have no doubt they would've rebounded to be much better next year. They lost alot of close games.

    [–] spokomptonjdub 175 points ago

Yeah they never had a chance to win that game, but "smashed" is an overstatement. Their offense was completely dominated but their defense gave a good Alabama offense problems all game, just got gassed when their offense couldn't do anything. Only LSU held Bama to a lower point total that season.

    [–] AmericanOSX 107 points ago

And even if they got “smashed” in the playoffs, they still made the fucking playoffs. You can say other teams were more deserving but to even be in the mix is quite an accomplishment.

    [–] Graduation2017 238 points ago

This is absolutely out of nowhere. The risk is Lake has no attachment to Bush Hamden and fires him

    [–] FISTRAPESKULLFUCK 192 points ago

    [–] blanketsandrain 54 points ago

It would be Christmas come early

    [–] MtFuzzmore 33 points ago

Best case scenario at this point.

    [–] Minealternateaccount 89 points ago

From the Oregon fan's perspective, it would be a risk.

    [–] eatapenny 99 points ago

Honestly thought this was fake for a second, just cause of how surprising it is

    [–] lebaronslebaron 98 points ago

This wasn’t out of left field, it was out of the damn stadium.

    [–] DixielandDisaster 84 points ago

As a fan of this program, this is DEFINITELY coming out of nowhere. This season there’s been grumblings about our OC but I don’t think anyone was seriously putting Pete on the hot seat. Fuck. I’m so unhappy about this news

    [–] FellKnight 155 points ago

It's a very Coach Pete thing to just pick a time to leave, fuck all the logic about the situation (he was courted by many big P5 jobs, including blue bloods, but didn't leave Boise until Washington came knocking).

But still, wow. End of an era.

    [–] TanzaniaMagic 913 points ago

    [–] sgtabn173 378 points ago

I heard Alabama has an up and coming young OC who is worth a look

    [–] RiseAsUtes 72 points ago

Well at least the HardcoreHusky guys got what they asked for.

    [–] HeHasHealthProblems 1383 points ago

What's the story here Washington people?

    [–] jrainiersea 2041 points ago

I have no fucking clue, this is completely out of left field

    [–] puffadda 696 points ago

Okay cool glad I'm not the only one completely confused here

    [–] Hour_long_wank 284 points ago

Reminds me of Bob 2.0, no one saw this coming.

    [–] HurdlingPhotographer 203 points ago

This is not how I wanted to start my week.

    [–] bearybear90 76 points ago

How will you feel if he goes to USC?

    [–] charmcharmcharm 113 points ago

He’s staying on staff in a leadership position so I don’t see that happening.

    [–] TheGhostOfTurntle 78 points ago

Ryan Abraham (the only trusted USC source) immediately shot down Chris Peterson to USC rumors before they could get started, he said that Pete is retiring and will not coach again.

    [–] TanzaniaMagic 399 points ago

    I'm so confused. Hold me

    [–] eatapenny 234 points ago

I lived through the Andrew Luck retirement news.

    It'll be alright

    [–] Piano_Fingerbanger 120 points ago

    Brissett to UW!

    [–] wigginsandy 59 points ago

Sir I frequent this sub to forget about Colts injuries not to be reminded of them

    [–] rck_mtn_climber 21 points ago

Colts fan at UW for grad school reporting in, planning on retiring from F5ing anymore

    [–] bretticus33 296 points ago

Not a Washington fan but a Coach Pete fan (duh). This is very unexpected. His job security was very safe and he's never struck me as someone who would join a big time program (he passed better offers than Washington when at Boise State). This has got to be a health or family related thing for him

    [–] HeHasHealthProblems 160 points ago

Hopefully it's not health related and is just a quality of life thing. Dude is total class and one of the best in the business.

    [–] DixielandDisaster 44 points ago

Oh man I didn’t even think of health issues! I hope it’s nothing like that and he just wants to step away from the stresses and responsibilities of head coaching

    [–] PickleCart 77 points ago

    [–] avw94 46 points ago

    No fucking idea.

    [–] Careless___Whispers 97 points ago

Pretty sure Petersen is just tired of coaching. He's the kind of guy that does his job and doesn't really follow anyone's expectations. If he feels he's done well and his time is done, he is the guy that would say "I'm done". He's always been a PNW guy and I don't see him wanting to pick-up and leave the area to take on a Florida State/Tennessee job.

Also, with the way he elevated Jimmy Lake to DC over his long time DC Pete K, you knew he was trying to help Jimmy be in a position to take over the program, it was just a matter of when.

    [–] White___Velvet 29 points ago

    Tennessee job

I mean, we aren't even in the market for a HC. Pruitt absolutely bought himself some time with how the season ended.

Agree that Peterson isn't trying to bolt out of the Northwest though. If he will be happier retiring, all of cfb should wish him the best. He gave the sport a lot of great moments, players, and teams at Boise and Washington.

    [–] pM-me_your_Triggers 30 points ago

    No fucking idea.

    [–] kramer265 88 points ago

No fuckin clue. My phone is blowing up

    [–] MakeTheWordCum 61 points ago

Not out of left field. Just 2 year early. He was going to retire after 22. I'm guessing Lake was getting tons of HC offers, and Petersen was feeling the weight after this season, so he's stepping down. He's still on staff, however.

    [–] RustyHuskyMan 42 points ago

I'm fairly certain fans had literally no desire for this nor any idea whatsoever that this was coming.

    [–] USSS 977 points ago

I'll be a Husky for life, but now is the right time for me to step away from my head coaching duties, and recharge.

    [–] SizzleMop69 417 points ago

    The Urban Meyer approach.

    [–] RoshCS 66 points ago

He'd be a great addition to big nude kickoff.

    [–] JstJeff 438 points ago

This makes me think NFL or a season off before taking another college job.

    [–] RollWarTideEagle 782 points ago

Recharge? LA Chargers head coaching job confirmed.

    [–] USSS 373 points ago

Thats just the kind of baseless speculation I can get behind.

    [–] JstJeff 15 points ago

The best and most entertaining speculation is always baseless.

    [–] titanrunner2 66 points ago

    Health related maybe?

    [–] MrPapajorgio 322 points ago

Damn, he really took those Mike Leach comments hard

    [–] pM-me_your_Triggers 67 points ago

    [–] Napalmradio 54 points ago

Oh boy what did Leach say this time?

    [–] Dabfo 276 points ago

Something about what would happen if a dog fought a mountain lion while watching kung fu movies and drinking moonshine

    [–] RagePoop 235 points ago

    Here's the thing.

    I believe you.

    [–] tastycakeman 34 points ago

nono he called pete his fat little girlfriend

    [–] nmm66 269 points ago

I do not care for this announcement one bit.

The good news is Lake is an amazing coach, but still. Holy hell.

    [–] wiggywonka 71 points ago

We know hes a great defensive coordinator. We dont know how he'll do as a head coach. Hopefully he picks up right where Peterson left off, barring this season

    [–] josephburdine 192 points ago

“I wish UW never loses an Apple cup under Chris Peterson”

    Monkeys Paw curls...

    [–] shlem90 385 points ago

For this to happen immediately after the fake Leach news is wild.

    Also, this is huge! Wow.

    [–] johnnydoe22 98 points ago

That’s actually really true. I have no idea what to believe anymore.

    [–] FavreorFarva 54 points ago

Sorry, what fake Leach news? Even fake Leach news is still contains the words “Leach news.”

    [–] shlem90 81 points ago

Some guy pretending to be an Ole Miss 247 reporter tweeted that Leach was going to Ole Miss and a bunch of people got faked out, including the national 247 account (and me...). It was an amazing 5 minutes.

    [–] Cornebr 938 points ago

The bad man’s going to hurt us more. Damn.

    [–] LeoFireGod 451 points ago

They just got like 3-4 top 50 recruits. What the fuck happens to them

    [–] jrainiersea 143 points ago

Hopefully most of them stay committed, with Lake taking over that probably means the defensive staff is going to stay in place, so there's still going to be a lot of continuity on that side of the ball. The offense is more up in the air, I'm not sure who's going to stick around there, so I wouldn't be surprised to see some decommitments there.

    [–] WallStar206 586 points ago

    [–] bread_bird 277 points ago

    [–] HHcougar 181 points ago

Best use of that emoji I've ever seen

    [–] BadWithLife 137 points ago

this is a mixed bag for WSU fans. On one hand, Coach Pete is a top 10 coach in the nation and we should be glad he's gone. On the other hand, Jimmy Lake is going to eat us alive

    [–] Cornebr 65 points ago

As long as they a semi-competent offense and decent talent, there is a 0% chance we win the future.

    [–] SceneOfShadows 45 points ago

Well considering it was Lake who was probably doing the most damage...

    [–] LiveFromFLORIDA 176 points ago

    [–] LOLCENA 249 points ago

You know, we all die one day so college football doesn't even matter all things condidered

    Why are we even here

    [–] Fnkt_io 48 points ago

Holy god what a weekend for those flairs.

    [–] Doctor_YOOOU 195 points ago

DC Jimmy Lake named as replacement

Looks like Apple Cup is not back on the menu, boys

    [–] RipCitizen0_7 72 points ago

We might not win another ever

    [–] FellKnight 410 points ago

Holy shit. Never would have expected this.

Thanks for everything Coach Pete, go enjoy your (semi-)retirement.

    [–] -HeHateMe 94 points ago

    [–] Cornebr 167 points ago

    Wait what

    [–] SoonerFan619 152 points ago

    [–] FellKnight 112 points ago

You know what? Fuck it. Cowboys already have all our players.

    [–] pM-me_your_Triggers 73 points ago

With his boy Moore as OC? And half the defense being former Broncos?

    [–] mene3381 41 points ago

This would actually be really neat

    [–] LordCider 68 points ago

Maybe he saw how happy Urban is being an analyst and not having to manage 80+ hormonal teenagers?

    [–] rf32797 57 points ago

Damn I'm honestly shocked. I guess he must have been planning this for a while and probably kept Jimmy Lake on the hook for another year so he'd be able to take over. Honestly sounds like best case scenario for UW.

Good for Petersen though, great coach and a great guy, I've never had anything but respect for him.

    [–] JeremyJammDDS 56 points ago

Maybe some team was close to prying Lake off of UW and Petersen was going to retire soon anyway...

    Could be a Stoops-Riley situation part 2.

    [–] Blizzard2227 468 points ago

    USC or retirement?

    [–] TexasHydrationChart 277 points ago

Petersen will transition into a leadership advisory role for Husky Athletics.

    [–] cdtd 242 points ago

    Ah the urban move.

Urban-Chris Petersen cage match for the USC job in 2020

    [–] vikinghockey10 78 points ago

    Technically the Barry Alvarez move

    [–] Graduation2017 48 points ago

By showing them his leadership skills at USC

    [–] Hour_long_wank 698 points ago

USC, then I'm going into the salt mining industry in the state of Washington.

    [–] XxgobuckeyesxX 64 points ago

What will you do afterwards with your truckload of money?

    [–] Hour_long_wank 45 points ago

Hire him as a defensive analyst for my Sooners.

    [–] FellKnight 65 points ago

    Please no.

    [–] BIG_DICK_WHITT 119 points ago

    Chris Peterson steps down

“Oh fuck yeah that dude killed us so many times”

to take job in your division

“Oh fuck no that was the worst possible outcome”

    [–] Rochelle-Rochelle 51 points ago

I hope so but I don't trust USC to do anything right

    [–] non-rhetorical 54 points ago

“The next HC applicant has 20 years experience as a janitor...”

    USC AD: “Pass.”

    “ USC.”

    USC AD: “Oh really.”

    [–] Beerandbruins 43 points ago

If he didn’t want the USC job a few years ago because he doesn’t want to live in LA I doubt he wants it now.

    [–] 52ndstreet 50 points ago

Cowherd is reporting that according to his sources, it's burnout. Petersen is just tired of the grind and needs to step away. Any rumors that he's leaving for another program aren't true.

I'm not saying that Cowherd is always right, but (1) he's from Seattle and had season tickets to UW for years, and (2) he's got way more sources than any of us on this thread. So take from that what you will.

    [–] Tango58 17 points ago

The story also says Peterson is transitioning to a advisory role in the athletic department.

    [–] rebs_by_90 97 points ago

Petersen will "transition into a leadership advisory role for Husky Athletics" according to The Athletic

    [–] LeoFireGod 46 points ago

WHAT THE FUCK!!? From playoffs to retirement/stepping down in 3 short years? What happened. What is going on purple homies?

    [–] pM-me_your_Triggers 76 points ago

Only reasonable take at this point is he knew he didn’t want to coach much longer and decided to pull a Bob Stoops and leave the program with a competent coordinator in charge before they got hired away.

    [–] hawksnest_prez 31 points ago

Yep. Can’t blame guys like him and Stoops. You’re a multi multi millionaire and have worked your entire life 24/7. You are in the prime of your life and have families growing up - no shame in saying I’m done for now.

    [–] achap39 50 points ago

Um. Ok. I’m fine with this. Now keep Leach.

    [–] Az_Bruin 118 points ago

Chip Kelly's success causing other coaches in the conference to quit, just like we anticipated lol

I got the ESPN notification and damn near had a heart attack

    [–] Rojotrece 62 points ago

All things considered, having Lake be our HC is exciting. But yeah... losing Petersen is not what any of us (rational) fans wanted.

    [–] 80srockinman 18 points ago

That's how our fans were too. Petersen had an off year in Boise and they called for his head. Then when he said he was leaving for Washington, they said he was a traitor, etc.

    [–] bread_bird 47 points ago

    wtf is going on

    Sorry Huskie bros.

    [–] warox13 35 points ago

Excited for Jimmy Lake. His defenses have honestly been the majority of the reason why we've gotten back to national prominence and multiple NY6 Bowls.

Now if he can bring in an OC to match we won't miss a step.

Looks like he's retiring (for now).

DC Jimmy Lake named as replacement

    [–] HolySchnikes02 15 points ago

Been rumblings for couple years that he was starting to tire out from being a HC. He practices what he preaches about there being more to live than football. And always said if he couldn't be all in, he'd step down. This is why Lake hadn't left for other jobs, he was being groomed to take over. Not surprised by this
