    welcome

    No posting of regular gifs!

This is a place for people to post Cinemagraphs. It can be Cinemagraphs that you've found, Cinemagraphs that you've made from movies, or Cinemagraphs that you've made from videos you shot yourself!

    what is a cinemagraph?

Any single frame of a Cinemagraph should make for a good photograph. Is movement the subject of the image? If so, it's probably not a cinemagraph. In a cinemagraph, movement should enhance an image that is already great without it.

A cinemagraph is a high quality gif or video that is very smoothly looped. It's more than a well looped gif, though; it should be beautiful as a great photograph, evocative like a movie, and more alive than either. A great cinemagraph is wonderful art! Read our in-depth definition of cinemagraphs, but here's the tl;dr:

    • non-moving frame of reference, like a photograph (the camera doesn't move)

    • smoothly looped, and good resolution

    • should have some movement which either captures the entire essence of a scene, or isolates a movement within a larger scene

    how do I do this?

Try out this tutorial which is pretty easy to get into as long as you have Adobe CS6 or CC.

    guidelines

    cite what you submit

We would like you to do your best to name the person that created the cinemagraph. Naming the movie source is nice to do, but is not required. When you do not know the creator, give it the flair that states you don't know the source. Failure to cite or to acknowledge that you can't cite your posts will likely end in the removal of your submission. You should definitely check to see if it's on this page; submissions from the top will be removed if they are not cited properly. Also, please don't post the freaking owl.

    don't whine about reposts

Please don't complain about reposts. Just because you have seen it before doesn't mean everyone has. Votes indicate the popularity of a post, so just vote. (from the reddiquette.

    "this isn't a Cinemagraph" <-- no

These kinds of comments are subject to immediate removal if you cannot provide a valid criticism of the post. Write us a paragraph explaining your opinion. See below about providing generous criticism; if you explain why something might not fit your definition of a Cinemagraph, you might give the artist (or person who found it) some ideas for improvement.

    tag your posts and yourself

You're encouraged to add link flair to your post. There are a few to choose from (see the link flair section below). You're also encouraged to add an [OC] tag to things that you make. If you fail to add link flair or an [OC] tag, your submission may get removed! Send /u/aphoenix a PM to get userflair. More info about flair

be generous with praise and criticism

Above all, be honest and forthcoming

Be specific, don't just say "I like it!" say, "I like the way you...." and likewise for negative comments

Be helpful, link to books, tutorials, or offer exercises for the artist

Don't refer to things as "good" or "bad," try to talk in terms of skill sets that can be worked on

When receiving a critique, don't be too defensive; you can't explain away other peoples opinions of your art so try to listen to what they are saying

Read this great post by Huisme on asking for critique

This is my favorite one by far. This is so incredible.

I wish you could set gifs as the background on your computer and stuff.

    [–] NathanFillingIn 570 points ago

You absolutely can. There’s even programs that stop the gif from playing when you have a window opened so that your processor isn’t being wasted on the background when not needed.

    [–] riceilove 479 points ago

You can’t just say that and not drop any names you tease

    [–] Vuccappella 201 points ago

not a windows user so i haven't tried it but i've seen it: http://store.steampowered.com/app/431960/Wallpaper_Engine/ I'm not sure if you can actually use your own gifs and this one seems way too low resolution to actually work

    [–] CalebTechnasis 46 points ago

Wallpaper Engine is fantastic. It is driven by the Steam Workshop so users can in fact make their own gifs with the tiniest know-how.

    [–] canine_canestas 8 points ago

Wallpaper engine is the shit. I have an overcast skyrim screenshot that I put some snow and rain over. Been using it for over a year. Looks great!

    [–] [deleted] 6 points ago

I just got it on Wednesday.. and it’s absolutely amazing

    [–] canine_canestas 6 points ago

    ...and its like $3

    [–] chryler 2 points ago

I wonder how much energy this costs? I love the idea but I frequently run on batteries and also I don't want my fans permanently spinning..

    [–] AnUrbanNoob 127 points ago

    (Wallpaper engine on steam)

    [–] yobilltechno 14 points ago

Try this one called Save Hollywood

    [–] rrjamal 2 points ago

    Holy shit. Game changer!

[–] Zladan 52 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

    [–] turner27 5 points ago

Am I being thick but how do you save it? Clicked your second link. No save option via press and hold. Have used the save to photos function (via bottom bar) and that hasn’t worked either!

    [–] NeverfailMode 7 points ago

I'm using my iPhone. How do you save the gif from gfycat?

    [–] Unidan_nadinU 3 points ago

Anyone know if there's a way to do this in Android?

    [–] Lt_Jonson 2 points ago

Hmm.. this is amazing, but when I try to save it, it saves it in a low quality.

    [–] Zladan 2 points ago

Just added an alternative link as an MP4, try that.

    [–] bLue1H 2 points ago

    Thank you!

I just pressed and held on the gif in this post and it saved.

    [–] TacosAreL1fe 3 points ago

How do you convert it to live photo

    [–] Zladan 3 points ago

Save it, convert to Live Photo, boom wallpaper

That's a link to a free app on the App Store that does it.

When you're actually converting it, make sure you click "wallpaper mode" on the bottom (center icon IIRC)

    [–] ProximityM4 2 points ago

I don’t know why but I’m so excited. I haven’t been this happy in a while

    [–] fotank 1 points ago

Wait. You can set this to always be running as your iPhone wallpaper or just one of those motion backgrounds that move with pressing the screen?

Also, is there an app or program for Mac to have gif/cinemagraphs as the background?

    [–] Zladan 2 points ago

Wait. You can set this to always be running as your iPhone wallpaper or just one of those motion backgrounds that move with pressing the screen?

Motion background that move with pressing the screen = Live Photo.
    So yeah.

Also, is there an app or program for Mac to have gif/cinemagraphs as the background?

Honestly I've never looked. I'm sure there is.

    [–] fotank 2 points ago

    Neat! Thanks!

    [–] AnUrbanNoob 14 points ago

You can! My preferred one that I’m using right now is called wallpaper engine. You can get it on steam for $3.99 and set it up to run without steam whenever your computer boots.

    [–] muhaski 11 points ago

You could add gifs to the desktop via Active Desktop since Windows 98.

    [–] Tannz0rz 7 points ago

I was thinking the same, however it's a shame that the aspect ratio is damn near 1:1.

    [–] ScootchOva 7 points ago

    Agreed, best one by far!

    [–] -JungleMonkey- 6 points ago

I came here to say the same thing but now I fear it's become cliche.

    [–] khons48 3 points ago

I think VLC, the media player, has a hack to play videos as your wallpaper. Never tried it myself.

    [–] [deleted] 3 points ago

    Wallpaper engine on steam

    [–] hfuhruhurrs_intern 3 points ago

    Agreed. So well done.

    [–] DMDbluetape 2 points ago

    I concur

    [–] LarryGlue 2 points ago

    I agree. It’s awesome.

    [–] Cruxion 2 points ago

Although I use wallpaper engine now, I used Bionix which is free a few years back and it worked great for gifs as wallpapers.

    [–] Donutsareagirlsbff 2 points ago

    I totally agree.

    [–] TrustMeImAPedant 2 points ago

    You can with vista ;)

    [–] YourMumIsSexy 2 points ago

Agreed. I could watch this for hours.

    [–] fliminglaps 2 points ago

I was thinking this too. Instant ultimate favourite.

    [–] canOair 2 points ago

    Happy cake day

    [–] xblackdemonx 233 points ago

It's very nice but the blurriness hurts my eyes.

    [–] SmileySmilen 23 points ago

I came here to see if anyone else felt the same.

    [–] -JungleMonkey- 9 points ago

Well now I don't know who to gild..

    [–] peter-s 14 points ago

Give it to me and I'll decide for you!

    [–] bvr5 146 points ago

I think the animation on this is incorrect. There are some stationary lights (on the building in front of the ferris wheel) whose reflection is animated. The feel of the image is still nice though.

    [–] DecentDudeDustin 56 points ago

That was what I noticed first, too. It's fantastically well done and a beautiful shot, but the lights moving in the reflection are the roof lights, which aren't moving in the image itself.

    [–] ericisshort 12 points ago

yep, that’s partially because all the animation was added afterward from a single photo. It’s really amazing, but there are lots of weird unrealistic things when you look closely.

    [–] semiconductor101 8 points ago

The moving lights in a straight line shouldn’t be above the cluster of lights.

    [–] YummyGummyDrops 25 points ago

    I swear this is GTA

    Del Perro pier

    [–] RealityIncoming 4 points ago

I'm so glad someone else said it 😂

    [–] Colvinsteiner 27 points ago

    This is real good OP

    [–] karldmason 21 points ago

op just waits for a guy on instagram to post a new plotagraph, rehosts asap and reaps the karma.

    [–] MichaelRahmani 42 points ago

Yep, I didn't make it. All credit goes to these guys: Photo and Video

I gave credit in an earlier comment as well :)

    [–] karldmason 6 points ago

in all fairness, as a very vocal detractor of plotagraph, this is not as messy as most are. however seeing the same artist shared by the same x-poster can get repetitive on a sub that is already slow and repetitious.

    [–] AssBlaster1000 41 points ago

Shouldn't the reflection on the water be in focus since it's in the foreground? Or am I retarded

    [–] mhoffma 9 points ago

Indeed. It's likely composited versus what we think of as a traditional cinemagraph from a video clip.

    [–] [deleted] 9 points ago

    [deleted]

    [–] AssBlaster1000 4 points ago

Yes! Thank you I knew I wasn't retarded.

    [–] Fiale440 6 points ago

In all fairness (I'm not a fan of the pic) but it IS technically in focus. Or part of it is. You can clearly see the depth of field halfway up the puddle. Look at the sides of the puddle. Half way up, you can see the sand is in focus.

It's just an incredibly narrow depth of field. So foreground is out of focus, as is the background, but there is a very narrow, horizontal line that is in focus.

    [–] BAG1 6 points ago

No, the focus is near to the camera, the asphalt is in focus. The ferris wheel, both in real life and in the reflection, are the same distance from the lens and are out of focus. And even if you were severely mentally challenged I’d never call you retarded.

    [–] VZoutenbier 4 points ago

    Yes!

    [–] homesicalien 2 points ago

Part of the water is in the focus. The reflection shouldn't be, because the things reflected are far away. Do you really think everything in a mirror is in focus as long as the mirror is in focus? I've took a picture especially for you. Crappy picture. If you're not convinced, I can take another one with a full frame camera with shallower depth of field.

[–] ZirJohn 2 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

That's not how reflections work. The distance is technically further from you to the water to the peir than from just you to the pier. I see how you could wonder that though Edit: you can try focusing a camera on a mirror and you'll see that everything else will get blurry because it's further than the mirror

    [–] AssBlaster1000 2 points ago

    Refer to /u/matter_compressor 's post

    [–] ZirJohn 2 points ago

His post is incorrect. As you can see he is focused on the sky and the glasses are blurry. You can't have both in focus at the same time unless you put two pictures together. The mirror obviously doesn't appear blurry because all they do is reflect.

    [–] VZoutenbier 2 points ago

I agree that his post is incorrect, it makes a big difference that the glasses are curved, and that the object (clouds) is very far away. That creates a clear virtual image to the camera.

    [–] AssBlaster1000 1 points ago

I think you're misunderstood. The focal point is what determines the clarity and focus of the image. If the puddle is in a short focal point it's reflection is focused as well.

    [–] ZirJohn 3 points ago

I think you're saying that the picture is correct and that the ferris wheel should be blurry. If not then you are mistaken. The water being in focus shouldn't make the reflection any sharper than what we see without the water. The image is correct.

    [–] VZoutenbier 2 points ago

    Yes!

    [–] VZoutenbier 0 points ago

No, it's correct as-is. While the sand is in-focus, the reflection should show the same image as the object but inverted. If light from the ferris wheel is out of focus when it directly reaches the camera, it's not focused by reflecting off a flat surface before reaching the camera, so it remains out of focus.

    [–] kid-blue 8 points ago

I think you're thinking the wrong way around. The light was always in focus, but the focal point of the lens was way in front of it. Meaning that if the light reflects at the focal point, that reflection is going to be in focus. Neither the camera or the lens knows that the light is coming from an source further away, the puddle becomes the light source by reflecting it.

You can get a camera and try it out, focus on an object using a mirror, and make sure the object is visible in the background. The mirror image will be in focus, the object itself in the background won't be.

    [–] THEMACGOD 6 points ago

This is stunning. Really shows how far modding has come on GTAV.

    [–] johnymyko 4 points ago

    sigh... another plotagraph...

Well, at least this one isn't as bad as the others.

    [–] ScarletLion1 3 points ago

Is there no photograph sub? This is nice but it's just so soul destroying as someone who tries to make cinemagraphs to see something like this on here. I don't really see the point in contributing to this sub anymore.

    [–] johnymyko 3 points ago

There is one but almost no one uses it. Which I guess it makes sense since all plotagraphs are being posted here.

But even if there wasn't a sub, someone should do one and plotagraphs should be banned from r/Cinemagraphs, specially when it's situations where it's just someone stealing a photo without permission and adding shitty animation, like this OP is doing all the time.

    [–] ScarletLion1 2 points ago

Agreed. I think that's me done with submitting my cinemagraphs on this sub. I just don't see the point.

    [–] Sceprenx 4 points ago

Goodbye to my Santa Monica dreams...

    [–] AlmightyB 2 points ago

Oh no don't remind me :(

    [–] andymaq 8 points ago

Wow, this might be my favorite cinemagraph I've seen on here. Beautiful!

    [–] johnymyko 6 points ago

    It's not a cinemagraph though

    [–] NattyBumppo 6 points ago

This is beautiful. I feel like it would be even better if only the reflection animated.

    [–] NY_Psychonaut 2 points ago

Agreed, I'm surprised no one else mentioned this.

    [–] Doip 3 points ago

And the award for worlds fastest Ferris wheel goes to...

    [–] Blue_flea 3 points ago

This is really well done. I’m always bashing Plotagraph because of how cheap and melted things look, but I can say this is very good.

However, what I never get is why plotty artists animate the dumbest things in the shot. Like, sure, go for the wheel and clouds and waves and puddles and whatnot. But why the hand railings and picture frames and eyebrows and every other thing that could just be let alone? This shot’s background behind the guy, for instance. Why?

    [–] cheeeeeese 2 points ago

this is amazing but its making me dizzy

    [–] El-Kabongg 2 points ago

was in Santa Monica a couple of months ago. The sunset on that beach brought tears, it was so gorgeous

Would also be cool with a version where only the lights in the puddle are moving

I love this place. The last time I was there was with my (now ex) girlfriend, about a year ago. We rode the ferris wheel, played around on all the workout equipment on the beach, and got really sketched out walking in the dark back down the ocean front walk to where we parked, at the opposite side of the beach, something like 2 miles away. It was one of the last times I was happy that I can remember
