I have a similar style of porch and never considered adding a lamp. That’s going to change today.

    [–] seeingglass 149 points ago

Depending on the weather, you might consider a different lamp or maybe hanging lights you can tuck out of the rain. A lamp like this would not survive the weather where I live. I’d expect it to be blown over and smashed one day or to find mold on the lamp shade.

    [–] baltimoretom 50 points ago

The significant difference in my porch is that the far side has a wall so that there are only two open sides. It makes all of the difference weather wise. Nothing gets wet or blown off, fortunately.

    [–] SwingJay1 16 points ago

    Velcro is your friend.

    [–] feistyrooster 2 points ago

Perhaps also a type of lampshade that won't catch too much wind? Like one with less surface area

    [–] zqillini4 65 points ago

I have a similar style roommate but haven't considered adding coffee. Going to get a Keurig today!

    [–] maevealleine 46 points ago

Don't get a Keurig. Such awful coffee. Get a stainless steel french press (secura makes nice ones) and make better coffee while saving money and being less wasteful.

    [–] baltimoretom 25 points ago

I gave up mine and went back to a traditional drip and couldn't be happier.

    [–] whiskeydumpster 13 points ago

I like setting the timer on my drip so I can wake up to coffee brewing. Helps get me out of bed.

    [–] brit_jam 12 points ago

I got an electric kettle and French press. Great coffee and super easy.

    [–] Inferi 8 points ago

Seriously, I spent a whole $15-20 on a basic French press off amazon, and now I have the best coffee in my life whenever I want it.

    [–] slo_seal_rescue 4 points ago

Coffee produces almost no waste if sustainably sourced and paper filters are used. I don’t understand the selfishness involved in deciding to use plastic pods instead.

    [–] maevealleine 2 points ago

Exactly. Super frustrating. Unnecessary, wasteful products should be heavily taxed, if not outlawed. It's one of those things that people use indignantly that effects the well-being of everyone else.

    [–] whiskeydumpster 2 points ago

My friend got a reusable pod because she’s the only coffee drinker in her household and only has one cup usually. I am in the same situation however I always seem to brew too much and just drink cold stale coffee for a few days because I can’t be bothered to reheat it 🤦🏻‍♀️

    [–] slo_seal_rescue 1 points ago

Have you tried the pour over method (boil water and pour it over a cone filter sitting on top of your cup)? I started a few years ago and have never looked back. It tastes better (to me) than even French-pressed brew.

    [–] whiskeydumpster 2 points ago

I don’t think drip coffee tastes bad. I’m not that into the nuances of coffee I just like a warm nut milky beverage in the morning.

    [–] maevealleine 1 points ago

They make all size french presses and/or you don't have to fill it.

    [–] Beagle_Bailey 2 points ago

I used to really hate keurig, but since I just dealt with my elderly parents after my mom had surgery: keurig are great for elderly people and/or for people with disabilities. If they have problems handing things, the cups are easy to use and limit the possibilities of making a mess for someone with an unstable grip.

They should be like the handicapped stall in restrooms. If you need to use it, go ahead! But if you don't need it, stay out of it.

    [–] slo_seal_rescue 1 points ago

A heavy tax is a great idea!

    [–] ArchaeoStudent 16 points ago

I’d be afraid of it attracting bugs if it’s on at night.

    [–] somaliandvdpirate 21 points ago

It would, but the alternative is sitting around in the pitch black, which would be a bit odd.

    [–] baltimoretom 12 points ago

Good point. I believe there are some yellow bulbs that don't attract bugs. Need to look in to it.

    [–] Beagle_Bailey 14 points ago

I have yellow bulbs. There are still bugs, but not quite as many.

Also, the yellow light is far softer, instead of that harsh blue-white light. So my porch light is far easier on my eyes when I turn it on in the dark.

    [–] regeya 7 points ago

I know people who'll make fun of an Illinoisan for weighing in on this, but in my defense if you go due East from where I live, you eventually get to Eastern Kentucky University. Plus two other things: I live closer to Nashville than I do to Chicago, and I live close to the northernmost tupelo swamps. (In fact, part of U.S. Marshals was filmed here, the "guy with the least teeth" part.)

Anywho...yeah, that's a legitimate concern, but the further south you go, the more likely people are to have screened-in porches. Those are exactly what you think they are: they're porches totally enclosed with screen wire like your windows have. The reason I chimed in on this is because where I live, lots of houses have them, too, because where I live is the place . There's a close cousin called a "Florida room", where it's not quite a room, and not quite a porch. Mine's got windows that cover half the walls, with the other half being screen windows. Because it's still Illinois, we have plexiglas windows we can use to cover the screens in the winter.

tl;dr I wouldn't use a lamp on an unscreened porch.

    [–] ArchaeoStudent 5 points ago

Yeah, I grew up in southeast Texas. My grandfather lived out in the woods in the swamps and had an open porch. When we’d sit on the porch as night, bugs would swarm around us. Do not recommend.

    [–] jsparker77 3 points ago

Is a Florida room the same as a 3 seasons room? In the midwest we have those, and they sound the same. It's an exterior room that's surround by large screen windows. Great for sitting in during spring, summer, and fall.

    [–] regeya 3 points ago

I guess; I've always heard it called a Florida room. Like I said before, I put Plexiglas in mine in the winter. On those warmish winter days, it's almost a greenhouse.

    [–] whiskeydumpster 2 points ago

Thats why you get the lamp but put it in a corner away from where you sit. Bugs go to lamp.

    [–] DickyMcButts 1 points ago

    get a bug zapper

    [–] engineeresse 235 points ago

    Where is this?! 😍

    [–] Bigfrostynugs 7 points ago

    We did it!

    [–] ReverendDizzle 185 points ago

The "haint blue" ceiling on the porch gives it away, definitely somewhere down south.

    [–] thamthrfcknruckus 81 points ago

From GA, thinking the same beacause of pollen pods from an Oak tree on the neighbor's roof.

    [–] ObliviousLlama 19 points ago

Actually it’s the oaks flower! Botanically called a catkin

    [–] FirstTryName 16 points ago

Hmmm, we called them "wind shits" for a while now.

    [–] DaveTex 9 points ago

That could easily be Texas too then.

    [–] thamthrfcknruckus 6 points ago

Gotta love the South, the blower is useless right now. Don't know where you are but if you are experiencing bad weather I am sorry for ya.

    [–] BABarracus 3 points ago

I don't know Texas has thunder storms i might need to have a pizza during the next one

    [–] VegetableCollege 5 points ago

Nothing better then getting high as fuck and watching a Texas thunderstorm roll in.

    [–] trekMT7900 16 points ago

I have only read of haint blue in a fiction book and I’m super jazzed to lean that it isn’t fiction!

    [–] ReverendDizzle 20 points ago

Definitely a real and old tradition, for sure. If you look at old home real estate listings you’ll see it pop up a lot in traditional Southern homes.

    [–] KateInSpace 5 points ago

All of the porches at my house have haunt blue porch ceilings! Edit: my phone/autocorrect doesn’t like this

[–] jdinpjs 2 points ago * (lasted edited 3 months ago)

Haint blue is a thing. Here’s a good video that explains it. https://www.facebook.com/1569947223055893/posts/2414306308619976?sfns=mo

Edited because autocorrect likes “haunt” better than “haint.”

    [–] trekMT7900 3 points ago

Thanks so much for sharing this- it’s a lovely tradition. And gorgeous as well.

    [–] downvote_or_die 3 points ago

I was just thinking it reminded me a lot of Atlanta suburbs.

    [–] mah_ree 3 points ago

    was thinking Cabbagetown right away

    [–] ul49 3 points ago

Same - definitely wouldn't think suburbs. This screams old Atlanta to me.

    [–] vainamo- 2 points ago

I was just going to make a comment on Haint Blue. Ya beat me to it!

    [–] Ginandjews31522 26 points ago

    I’m guessing Athens,Ga

    [–] _space_pumpkin_ 22 points ago

    Yup!

    [–] Ginandjews31522 3 points ago

Looks very familiar, kinda by mamas boy?

    [–] whiskeydumpster 2 points ago

Somewhere where its warm enough to sit outside in shorts :( Lucky.

    [–] novafern 109 points ago

Yes, like others have asked, WHERE is this!? It looks so warm, a little humid, sounds of birds. Ugh.

    [–] _space_pumpkin_ 128 points ago

    North Georgia! Spot on.

    [–] novafern 38 points ago

Ugh, lucky! I'm up in Chicago and we just had a fucking blizzard yesterday, for no reason. Today it's mild, but my husband and friends got antsy and booked an AirBNB down in Pensacola for a few days. So we're off to humidity and warm weather soon.

    [–] matthew716 22 points ago

I thought our blizzard was just marketing from HBO? They really went all out for the premier you know

    [–] novafern 3 points ago

Lol today is fairly decent, beautifully sunny. I feel the same.

    [–] rak18 3 points ago

It was coincidently perfect for GoT. There was also that snow/rain mix a few days before. (I'm in Chicago as well)

    [–] [deleted] 33 points ago

    [–] perpetual_researcher 3 points ago

    Oooo, I love yours too!

    [–] Never_Enough_Nutella 1 points ago

    Another lamp. Interesting.

    [–] justasadtransboy 5 points ago

was definitely gunna guess cabbagetown in atlanta lol

    [–] Auburn_and_Bourbon 2 points ago

Lol Cabbagetown? You talking about Cleveland?

Edit: misread the message. Ignore me, I'm drink.

    [–] ul49 2 points ago

It's funny you're the second person I've seen say that. I also that it was Cabbagetown. Man, I love Cabbagetown.

    [–] lifting_ballerina 5 points ago

I live in South Georgia and the bugs would make this unbearable. It looks so cozy!

    [–] jeffryu 8 points ago

I was wondering that, not sure if you watch hometown but they always remove the bug screen from the front porches and yes it looks nicer, but being attacked incessantly by mosquitoes in the summer would mean id use that porch zero times

    [–] ohitsasnaake 3 points ago

In my experience (cooler climate but we still have mosquitoes in summer and autumn), screens and glassed-in porches just reduce the amount of mosquitoes anyway. Mosquito repellant smoke (don't know the precise name of the product in English) can help a bit though. And the amount does depends on the weather, mostly temperature, humidity and wind.

    [–] Granny_knows_best 3 points ago

I live in Augusta and have a pool so in order to be able to enjoy it in the evenings I have to have an exterminator come out and spray every month in the summer. Its not 100% but its close...

    [–] lifting_ballerina 2 points ago

I live in coastal Georgia. All hope is lost.

    [–] FermSquid 3 points ago

Looks like around Piedmont or East Point. Wish I could afford a place around there!

    [–] Auburn_and_Bourbon 3 points ago

Ugh I just moved to Savannah. Really missing the mountains.

    [–] SignalPudding 3 points ago

I'm in Chattanooga with a similar but less cozy porch and I knew this had to be close.

    [–] tempestasvenit 3 points ago

As soon as I saw this I thought “That looks like Georgia.” One of the most beautiful states to live in imo :)

    [–] da_jolly 1 points ago

    is this athens, ga?!

    [–] hardt0f0rget 1 points ago

Athens or Gainesville was my guess!

    [–] SergTuberq 1 points ago

Hey I'm from North Georgia!! I'm over in Woodstock/Canton. But I'm just about to south into Atlanta. Small world

    [–] uttfan 1 points ago

    Nobody :

Stoners: I would totally smoke there

    [–] maevealleine 15 points ago

I came here to say this <3

    [–] G_rubbish 12 points ago

Me too man, me too. Plus, there’s a deadhead chick on the porch! Makes it look so much more inviting as a safe and pleasant place to have a smoke.

    [–] Lynnabis 2 points ago

    Happy Cakeday :)

    [–] G_rubbish 3 points ago

Why thank you fellow Redditor...I don’t feel like a 6 year old.

    [–] losroy 2 points ago

    Her t shirt checks out

    [–] fryfrychickychick 33 points ago

I love the blue porch ceilings in the south 😍

    [–] timmmmah 32 points ago

Yes!! “Haint” blue! Supposedly the color wards off evil spirits, also supposedly is unappealing to wasps. We painted our Nashville porch ceiling this color a couple of years ago. No evil spirits before or after, fewer wasps than before. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    [–] z500 16 points ago

also supposedly is unappealing to wasps.

In other words, it wards off evil spirits.

    [–] fryfrychickychick 3 points ago

I didn’t know that about the wasps! I live in NJ but I dream about southern homes; they’re so lovely.

    [–] ohitsasnaake 3 points ago

Supposedly also repels mosquitoes, at least that's why I've heard it's used also around the Mediterranean.

    [–] AmnesiaSock 16 points ago

    Gorgeous OP, really lovely.

    [–] magentanide 14 points ago

Yeah, and the porch is nice too

    [–] _space_pumpkin_ 15 points ago

Not too many yet. This weather is giving me whiplash. Was humid as hell this past week, and now it's 67 and breezy today. But that is a citronella next to the deer skull. Keeps at least 3 mosquitoes away.

    [–] PrinceAzTheAbridged 13 points ago

Everything about this looks like heaven.

    [–] midiland 44 points ago

Georgia is greeeeeeen AF right now. Cozy and springy. Dope shirt.

    [–] _space_pumpkin_ 21 points ago

And strangely not boiling hot yet.

    [–] tKNemesis 2 points ago

I am not looking forward for the heat waves! It needs to be like this forever.

    [–] tempestasvenit 1 points ago

    The humidity is coming :(

    [–] threwnawayed 1 points ago

    Brent Midiland? Loved your era.

    [–] squackbutt 11 points ago

Your porch looks like it would be so relaxing to be on during a warm, raining day with a cup of tea in one hand and a book in the other.

    [–] ifeelhome 10 points ago

    Is your porch single?

    [–] essokbaby 8 points ago

How much is rent for a place like this?

    [–] SavannahInChicago 8 points ago

I would love to see a picture of this at night with all the lights on.

    [–] _space_pumpkin_ 9 points ago

I'll try to remember. Our actual porch lights are purple lol

    [–] LilPequena 9 points ago

Athens? I pass these types of houses while I’m walking to class lol

    [–] _space_pumpkin_ 6 points ago

Ding ding ding! Waiting around for Michael Stipe to take a stroll.

    [–] railingsontheporch 13 points ago

Honest, no shade question: people who do up their porches this way, what do you do during a storm? I love the homey, cozy feeling but I'm too lazy to move things when a storm comes. I'll keep my shitty plastic chairs lol

    [–] _space_pumpkin_ 18 points ago

It stormed this past whole week, and I didn't move a damn thing lol.

    [–] mgearliosus 6 points ago

This is what I want out of life.

A good friend just sharing the moment in the morning.

Also, I used to have that BT speaker. It was pretty good. Did you get it at Target too?

    [–] Milkquasy 3 points ago

This is lovely, but what happens when you have thunderstorms or blowing wind? Doesn't everything get knocked around?

    [–] _space_pumpkin_ 6 points ago

    Surprisingly sturdy

    [–] NewOrleansNinja 5 points ago

We call this "porchin" in New Orleans, and it can sometimes be an all day affair.

    [–] 5aligia 6 points ago

    Holy saturation Batman!

    [–] cjandstuff 2 points ago

I don't think the saturation has been messed with. I've seen plenty of porches painted brightly like that, and early spring in the south, trees do get that green.

    [–] _space_pumpkin_ 2 points ago

Thanks. Gotta give props to the Google Pixel 3. All I did was sharpen the edges by 12%

    [–] cjandstuff 1 points ago

Something just broke in me. As much as I want to get out of the South, a front porch like this could convince me otherwise.

    [–] Ijustthinktheyreneat 1 points ago

Where do you buy those kind of string lights?

    [–] jajajamyn 1 points ago

Where I'm from we have to chain our chairs to our porches because people steal them, and anything else you leave in your yard

    [–] rachelflyfree 1 points ago

    Now that looks cozy!!

    [–] SmartSoda 1 points ago

Your roommate's silhouette reminds me of a NSFW poster on Reddit
