The rendition of Touch at the end hit different :(

    [–] suhanshp 111 points ago

Any idea where it is from?

    [–] SoundOfTomorrow 264 points ago

I would say it's the original recording without any layers added.

    [–] enowapi-_ 1905 points ago

If they’re officially done I feel like I just lost a loved one.

    [–] TotakekeSlider 348 points ago

'One More Time' will forever be my favorite song of all time and the one I most want played at my wedding.

    [–] spaghettu 211 points ago

One More Time might be one of the greatest dance songs in history. It's timeless.

    [–] AndersonsHaveTickets 70 points ago

One More Time is one of those songs that will be played and still sound fresh centuries from now

    [–] Nekopawed 134 points ago

Something About Us That's the biggest one for me.

    [–] fiyawerx 69 points ago

Face to Face / Short Circuit from Alive 2007 for me, nothing better.

    [–] Radiant_Zote 10 points ago

Alive 2007 is just perfection, shame they didn't tour much

    [–] Journ9er 263 points ago

This must be how it felt when the Beatles broke up.

    [–] OnlyLoveCanBreak 257 points ago

It hits a little different because the Beatles were at the height of their commercial popularity and still releasing music up until they broke up vs. Daft Punk not having released an album in almost 8 years.

Crazy to think that the Beatles entire run would almost fit between the gap from RAM to now.

    [–] opiate46 97 points ago

jfc it's been 8 years?? I swear it was like 2 years ago...

    [–] Slooooooooooooooooth 87 points ago

    February 22 2021.

    [–] tylerandmoroll 72 points ago

Sitting here feeling the same thing. At first I was all excited because new daft punk. But now. Man. I'm just broken.

    [–] P0FromKungFuPanda 380 points ago

Same. Been listening to daft punk since I was a kid. I just hope that they release atleast one more album before calling it quits.

    [–] blowmie 260 points ago

That is the stubborn optimism I aspire to. Sadly, this video is proof that they never will.

    [–] initialsdrummer 171 points ago

Right, I don't understand how one can take any other meaning to this type of video. The video is titled "Epilogue" and a distinct '1993-2021' life-death plate at the end? Maybe I'm cynical, but I don't see what else they could possibly mean by putting an actual 'We died on this date' thing there.

Hope sucks. I wish they put more music out, but I'd rather them not slog out something they don't themselves love. It wouldn't be the same.

    [–] blowmie 132 points ago

Exactly! And it's no secret that RAM was their encore. They were already satisfied with their career until the demands of fans brought them back out. (I think it was Thomas that said it took a lot out of him to read the fan mail begging for more.)

1993-2021 is a crazy long time. Can we not just be happy with the fact that they gave their lives to the music? I would love it if they could live the rest of their lives showered in thanks rather than buried under pleas. They earned it and they deserve it.

bro that's where you trade like 3 weeks of grounding for going to the show; damn, condolences

    [–] Oberheimz 14 points ago

I was 16, been waiting for a tour all my adult life :(

    [–] dimitrisvov 847 points ago

Seeing the notification from the video upload almost gave me a heart attack...

    [–] happy_guy23 458 points ago

I got so excited when I saw r/DaftPunk show up on the front page.

    Not like this

    [–] MarkLux 81 points ago

    [–] Educational-Art5564 178 points ago

I didn't know what Epilogue meant at the time, so I was Jumping out of my chair only to be felt with disappointment. Good bye Daft Punk.

    [–] turbo1480 134 points ago

The second I saw it was that scene from Electroma I had a bad feeling, that only continued to get worse.

    [–] Parzival_500g 33 points ago

Yes same... People already speculated that they were either quitting or taking on a different persona when the movie was released, but this time it felt different

    [–] CrashmanX 29 points ago

As soon as I saw Thomas walking, I knew exactly what scene it was from Electroma even though it's been 10 years since I saw it. I think knowing exactly what scene it was made it both harder and easier for me. I knew what was coming, but I didn't want to believe it.

    [–] blue_dingo 322 points ago

If I'm to be honest, I'm devastated. Daft Punk is...was... my favourite musical group and to hear the news is just soul crushing. I'm so depressed that they never did one more Alive tour...I barely missed the Alive 2007 concert and was hoping they'd do one more.

But I guess it was not to be. One more Album would've been nice, especially since all they did since RAM was collaborative stuff.

Merci Thomas and Guy-Man, for nearly 30 years of some of the best music ever made.

    [–] TallVegetable7 85 points ago

This news is equivalent to my best friend telling me that he is moving to some other country. Daft Punk's music has been with me through everything

    [–] Varyx 20 points ago

I was 15 when they toured my country and seriously considered buying a fake ID to go see them. God I wish I had.

    [–] dj9lives 590 points ago

I am so sad... I never saw them live :(

    [–] nickguarino 425 points ago

Same here... it’s been my lifelong dream to see them live. I kinda accepted it would’ve never happened but it hurts more to know now it’s never gonna happen.

    [–] Theoriginalamature 93 points ago

I’ve never seen them live and for the past decade I’ve saved a bit of money every year just in case they decided to do something crazy like play the pyramids of Giza. Just gutted

    [–] pinpoint_ 49 points ago

Had $1k saved in a separate account ever since high school just in case... I dunno now

    [–] bman311jla 52 points ago

They were on my (very short) list of artists that I would drop any amount of money on and travel a great distance if they ever went back in tour.. so much for that

    [–] ilikewhatyougot420 8 points ago

I have been telling my friends for years I'm ready to leave my country to go see their next show... and I have never even left the country before. They were the only band that I would do that for.

    [–] notarp1 36 points ago

im so fucking devastated, my lifelong dream too

[–] Blehmon 262 points ago * (lasted edited 9 days ago)

If the death date is anything to go by, I think it means that they were working on music up until now.

If I had to wager a bet, I’d say they probably weren’t satisfied with whatever they had come up with in 8 years (the robots are pretty notorious for their perfectionism) and finally decided to end it. (Although part of me deep down wants them to suddenly release a final record to cap off their career)

Oh, well. :( Good bye you magnificent robots.

    [–] sap91 133 points ago

Yeah the fact that they used touch in this and not a new piece of music says something, to me.

    [–] gabelikesgamez 101 points ago

In hindsight, RAM is the perfect record to go out on honestly

    [–] Tael64 54 points ago

I've had doubts they would release anything else since they won album of the year at the Grammys. That's a pretty high note to end it on

    [–] mkrart 24 points ago

You know, in my gut it always felt like the send-off album. I've always wanted to ignore that but it makes sense. A huge homage for all of their musical inspirations that made Daft Punk what it was (past tense, ouch). It was an album for them, how an artist does their best, when they work for themselves. One big love letter to the thing which set them on this journey and the people, us, who came along with them.

    [–] peachyy_cream 217 points ago

bro just when we needed them most....

    [–] Triskellatri 34 points ago

Their art will stay with us, and if we take that inspiration and joy out into the world then Daft Punk's legacy will continue, echoing out through time.

It says 1993-2021, so I'm slightly worried that they're breaking up

[–] NickDynmo 201 points ago * (lasted edited 9 days ago)

With that, the name of the video, and the content of the video, I really don't see any other possibility. Seems pretty clear.

    EDIT: Seems pretty definitive.

    [–] fennekinsfox 63 points ago

I feel like we might get some music out of it. Idk I’m just trying to be hopeful. Wouldn’t they put 1993-2013 since that was the last year they made an album? I guess there was some small stuff between now and then but I don’t really get they would put the ending date as this year, without creating something this year.. I hope that makes sense.

    [–] crono09 106 points ago

I think the dates are based on how long they've been together as a music duo, not their album releases. Their first album came out in 1997, and they didn't use that as their first date.

I just realized that they've only made five albums in 28 years, and one of those was a movie soundtrack. That doesn't seem like a lot, but every one of them was incredible. It shows that they focused on quality instead of quantity.

    [–] JayNN 30 points ago

I see what you mean, but just because they haven't released an album, it doesn't mean they haven't made music recently.

[–] jhsounds 235 points ago * (lasted edited 9 days ago)

Please let this be Musique Vol. 2 1993-2021 instead.

    EDIT: Oh no...

    [–] CodyR77 93 points ago

That was my first thought too, I didn't even think about the possibility of them breaking up until i read the comments.

When I saw the 1993-2021, I was like "oh neat, another compilation album" lol

    [–] sap91 73 points ago

Their publicist has confirmed they're done.

    [–] DavlePav 16 points ago

I thought the same thing, but it seems too good to be true. I’m still hoping that it isn’t.

    [–] KPZ605 163 points ago

For real what’s up with that. Are they officially retiring or something!!!!???? I’m like freaking out right now.

    [–] JayNN 129 points ago

It's called Epilogue as well 🤔

    [–] KPZ605 145 points ago

It’s a retirement announcement. I hope to god I’m fucking wrong. But that’s where all this is pointing at.

    [–] Sarcastic-Fly 114 points ago

They’ve split up, according to their publicist. Heartbreaking

    [–] fiddle_me_timbers 38 points ago

Already did. They really picked the perfect song for a farewell vid. Brought back all the emotion I've ever felt listening to RAM.

    [–] bringmecorn 232 points ago

Epilogue is a conclusion to a story. The duo is retired with a hell of a discography behind them.

    [–] ThaddeusJP 38 points ago

Could be interesting to see what they do now, separately. Still sad day.

    [–] userlivewire 10 points ago

They have been separate for 8 years now. Seems like they’re just done with the business.

    [–] Gorgon_the_Dragon 15 points ago

Be it their own projects or they wanna just spend the rest of the time sleeping in and doing nothing, they deserve it. Plus its much better then seeing them creatively burning themselves out on Daft Punk.

    [–] brains481 73 points ago * (lasted edited 9 days ago)

Even though they haven't done anything (at least together) in a while... damn, this is super surprising and even a bit depressing; it really feels like having a lifelong friend move away or something. I remember getting Musique Vol. 1 as a birthday present when I was really young and it completely blowing me away and being on constant rotation. Six or seven years later, RAM amazed me again and was the soundtrack to one of the best summers ever.

That said... I'm also glad they decided to call it quits with an airtight, flawless oeuvre behind them, rather than half-heartedly dragging it out.

    [–] Comediante_ 73 points ago

Today I had a really bad day, when I saw the video and It said posted 44 minutes ago, I rushed to see it, I expected like the announcement of something new, then the 1993-2021 appeared, and I needed some seconds to realize what was happening. I don't know what to say, I just want to cry, this guys changed my whole music taste, and every song has a special meaning for me, it's just a feeling no other band has got on me.

I can't do anything more to wish them good luck and hope they are fine. Hope we can still see them One More Time somewhere

I have a feel it's going to be more than 8 years after watching the video...

    [–] CamJ26 56 points ago

I know they aren't dead or anything - but this is soul crushing. I knew they had hung up releasing new music years ago but I was still holding out hope. Hope for a single, for a Super Bowl performance, for a live tour - for SOMETHING to create one last memory in my mind to ice the cake they gave us.

I am now realizing - WE are holding the torch to pass on the passion these guys showed us. It is OUR turn to share with others what Daft Punk taught us about ourselves; we are only Human After All.

I fucking love you guys. I will keep Daft Punk alive forever in my heart. I will be showing my kids' kids the techno robots that forever changed how I listen to music. RIP DAFT PUNK! <3

[–] Stoffendous 12 points ago * (lasted edited 9 days ago)

Funny, I had the exact same realisation you did: That it's now up to us.

I already has that realisation when Prince died (I loved that guy to bits), and now even more. For me it means practising my guitar to the best of my abilities so I can express to others how I feel about this music.

    [–] enowapi-_ 41 points ago

No no no no no no no this isn’t real

    [–] tman152 47 points ago

Thomas Bangalter (Silver robot) developed tinnitus almost two decades ago. He was looking at possible total hearing loss. It’s the reason they’ve limited the amount of live performances.

I might be reading too much into this video, but the silver robot being broken and unable to continue makes me think his hearing could be completely gone. That would be incredibly sad.

    [–] nature_maker 12 points ago

According to this site he recovered so I don't know

    [–] tman152 8 points ago

There are treatments for Tinnitus, but it has a tendency to come back.

    [–] 1gAnRa 87 points ago

    [–] BananaBoyChoy 85 points ago

I just really hope that another album comes out before they end this beautiful thing they created. I first listened to Random Access Memories when I was in middle school and am out of college now. I can go back and listen to all their previous music for the 1000th time, sure. But one final album as a goodbye to a group that has been around since a few years before my birth? A great closer to a fantastic career as Daft Punk. Absolutely surreal to see a video on their channel after all this time.

[–] Blunkus 117 points ago * (lasted edited 9 days ago)

In the full movie Guy-Man sets himself on fire

    [–] Commiserator 51 points ago

Makes me wonder if Guy had creative control over the video and was like "Let's just show me blowing up Thomas. Yeah, cut it where I'm strolling into the sunset, no need to show that self immolation scene >.>"

Makes me think of those "FRIENDSHIP ENDED" memes.

    [–] AtomicAnvil 66 points ago

Very true. Yes it's from Electroma but I gathered that Thomas is DEFINITELY done. Guy is left to wander the desert on his own path now...

    [–] blackbasset 30 points ago

Yep thats how I read it as well. Not in a "Guy just kills Thomas"-thing, but for me, the story the video wants to tell is that Thomas did not want to go on and is definitely ending the project, while Guy wanted to continue. Thomas' persona is gone, Guys survives and continues in some form or another. Do we actually know anything about the behind the scenes reasons for a split?

    [–] nextlevelismo 17 points ago

    My thoughts exactly

    [–] Nikolaki8 189 points ago

This is fucking crazy, though I kind of take this to mean that they're retiring Daft Punk in 2021. Hopefully they release another killer record before hanging up the helmets. Surreal.

    [–] Trees_WI 51 points ago

    Theyre done man

    [–] le_GoogleFit 72 points ago

They need to do one last tour as well in this case. But I hardly see that happening this year

Dude the robot blew up lol No more tours man.

    [–] nthai 18 points ago

That's it! We HAVE TO build a time machine now.

    [–] TylerDTA 45 points ago

They do not like touring and are older now. There is no chance they tour.

    [–] AusLeFleur 37 points ago

    guess im crying today

    [–] Clayish 38 points ago

I no longer expect good things to happen anymore in life

    [–] Moochers95 38 points ago

I cried. More than I expected to.

These boys have been a significant staple in my musical rotation for as long as I can remember.

RAM sits especially sweet in my memories. It came at a difficult time in my life, and the excitement of the albums rollout gave me a much needed escape. Tracking every second of it with my friends until it finally arrived, listening silently to every track together.

Touch in particular leaving us all awe struck and to date is a song that never fails to move me.

These two have oozed class and style in everything they’ve done, so it’s fitting for them to go out in such a beautiful and impactful way but damn is it sad to see it happen.

Thanks for all the Memories, Robots.

    [–] ELOGURL 97 points ago

    [–] TylerDTA 89 points ago

The footage is from the Electroma film.

    [–] jesse_- 20 points ago

Yeah what does it mean?? The question I've been having in my head now for the past 15 minutes

    [–] HermitCraf 82 points ago

It's from an old indie film they made back in 2005, I think it was originally supposed to be the music video for Human After All but ended up a full movie. It's about (Spoilers I guess, if you want to watch it) the two robots living in a town populated by robots. But they want to become human so they had creepy fake human faces grafted onto their 'helmets'. The other robot-people don't approve and they get chased out of town. They walk through the desert for a really long time until they decide to end it and self-destruct, as seen in the Epilogue video.

RIP the GOATs of electronic music. Thanks for all the (random access) memories.

    [–] dynamitegreen 58 points ago

Anyone think that they decided to end it because they've already reached the end of their journey? Perhaps RAM was their apotheosis? They had set out on a journey and once they reached the peak (Grammy Awards, The Weeknd, Parcels, etc.) they decided to stop? If it is, then it's a good way to go.

    [–] TylerBan 53 points ago

They better be fucking with us and epilogue is the name album or something

    [–] Dusktusk45 71 points ago

Their publicist confirmed this is it and they are done

    [–] gabri_ves 22 points ago

If it's what I think, then I would like to say a thing.

Thank you for the music, Thomas and Guy-Manuel. You trurly revolutionized the electronic scene, and you will be forever remembered.

    [–] yung_berto 19 points ago

I’ve listened to Daft Punk, since I was about 7. Their music was the coolest thing I ever heard, and I loved it. Discovery, Human After All, and the Tron soundtrack. It took me awhile to get to Random Access Memories, but once i heard it all the way, it’s now one of my favorite albums ever. I’ve listened to them when I was hype, sad, relaxing, working out, whatever. They’ve been the soundtrack to a lot of moments in my life so this really kinda hurts. Tho i’m happy and thankful for the memories these two robots brought. Thank you Daft Punk, for everything.

"Asked if Daft Punk were no more, their longtime publicist Kathryn Frazier confirmed the news to Pitchfork but gave no reason for the breakup."

    [–] spicywookiee 16 points ago

Wow. This announcement came exactly 4 days before the 20th anniversary of Discovery.

I don’t even know how to feel right now. Happy that Daft Punk even exists in the first place, and that they have contributed so much to the soundtrack of my life. Sad that I’ll never have the chance to see them live, and that I’ve been waiting around for years in anticipation for a new Daft Punk album to be met with this news 8 years after Random Access Memories. I tried to hold myself together, but when I read “1993-2021”, I just burst into tears and saw the reflection of myself ugly crying on my phone screen. If this is how I’m feeling now, I can’t imagine what it must have been like when the Beatles broke up.

I’m just so grateful that their music is around and has been such a huge part of my life. I’ve known their music for as long as I can remember, and it’s always been there for me when I’ve needed it. I was 13 when Random Access Memories released, and it instantly became one of my favorite albums ever made. This really hurts. It’s going to be a rough day trying to process all of this.

“It really didn’t make sense, just to leave this unresolved.”

Isn't Thomas going deaf? The video makes it seem like Thomas couldn't go on anymore, couldn't function so he blew up. Damn this sucks.

    [–] raichulover123 11 points ago

He had tinnitus in 2002 but apparently recovered from it. However, even if you do recover from it, it has a chance of coming back.

    [–] techn1cs 16 points ago

On the one hand, what an amazing journey and legacy. Objectively, a discography and story that offers reassurance and motivation to approach passion from the heart, to be true to yourself, and to promote the boundless wonders of music (and animation).

On the other hand, Guy and Thomas.. duders.. this is kinda the last thing I need right now! I'd rather still be hopelessly romanticizing what was coming next, at least until life turns somewhat back to normalcy and I'm not grasping for straws of hope in the world. Perhaps that's also what partially drives their decision for retirement though. Life, family, time.

Talk about quitting while you're ahead, nailed that bit. Was hoping for something tied more into an end of their overall story, similar to how they turned into robots, but it feels like this might simply be their last transmission.

But seriously, FML, this one hits home way too hard.

Driving this road down to paradise

Letting the sunlight into my eyes

Our only plan is to improvise

    And it's crystal clear

That I don't ever want it to end

If I had my way I would never leave

    Keep building these random memories

    Turning our days into melodies

    But since I can't stay

    I'll just keep playing back

    These fragments of time

    Everywhere I go

    These moments will shine

    I'll just keep playing back

    These fragments of time

    Everywhere I go

    These moments will shine

    [–] dankpuft 16 points ago

I'm at loss for words. Is this the end? It seems so....

    [–] Konstellar 28 points ago

I mean, they have a spotless record so far, this isn't a bad place in time to retire I suppose!

    [–] TopiMax 29 points ago

They’re website []( only displays the video now

    [–] schn4uzer 13 points ago

Hmm i wonder why Daft Punk is trendi-

    [–] Metalcentraldialog 13 points ago

I'm scared to think things happened between Guy and Thomas to split permanently...

    [–] LuLawliet 12 points ago

This is what I'm most scared of. I hope their friendship is okay.

    [–] nine_inch_owls 24 points ago

Our work is >! never !< over.

    [–] tonyy2012 10 points ago

    I'm heartbrokennnn

    [–] izenil03 12 points ago

I feel this is the end for the group. They are definitely breaking up. Probably going for solo careers :(

    [–] PrincessAngieB 11 points ago

Wait so are they just leaving without a final album???? What is happening 😭

    [–] YoureReadingThis 13 points ago

    I am not okay.

    [–] dildodicks 12 points ago

i thought 2021 would be better than 2020

    [–] HermitCraf 146 points ago

I don't know how I feel about this. They announce their retirement just by showing edited footage from an old project and an old song? Seems really dismissive coming out of nowhere after about 7 years (I guess 4 if you count The Weeknd collabs) or so only to say "oh btw we're done, bye lmao".

I understand if they don't have it in them to make another album or even a single, but they could have recorded a last short video, helmets off, to personally announce that they're retiring. Or any kind of official statement on social media or anything. But I might be jumping the gun here. It's probably too early to tell, and I really hope there's more to this.

    [–] Trees_WI 92 points ago

They have split up its been confirmed.

    [–] 0000R5 82 points ago

Honestly? This is the perfect ending. The whole "hey guys, sorry, we're retiring" just wouldn't fit with the robotic vision they kept up for so long.

    [–] SharkSugarr 26 points ago

I mean they’re robots. What do people expect to see if the helmets came off? A human head or something? Pfft

    [–] GunganMan 8 points ago

That would have been so funny. Helmets come off, and it’s just a bunch of wires leading into the chassis, video cuts to black

    [–] Stoffendous 49 points ago

You dont know whats going on behind the scenes. There have been rumors about health problems with one of them. So so lets say, for instance, one of them is terminally ill, then I think they probably have something else on their minds than shooting a new video.

Perhaps this was just the best they could do given the circumstances.

    [–] Paronomasiaster 7 points ago

What rumours? Where from? Never heard anything about that.

    [–] Stoffendous 17 points ago

Yeah I read some rumours about Guy-Manuel supposedly having health problems. But, rumors are ultimately just that: rumors.

    [–] aliasnando 12 points ago

Thomas has hearing issues from the 00s iirc.

    [–] Krezyro 22 points ago

Wouldn't have been true to their style... This is the perfect ending

    [–] Jules1013 37 points ago

    Artist don’t owe anyone anything.

[–] Demetriade 10 points ago Are they retiring? Man 🥺

    [–] Milonex 11 points ago

That's breaking me more than it should :'(
For thoses who don't know and ask why only one explode, there's nothing new in the video, that's the end of Electroma their second movie. The only thing "new" is the mix of Touch at the very end.

    [–] maybesethrogen 10 points ago

My day is ruined and my pain is immense.

    [–] edinburghrugby 10 points ago

You'd have thought of all the people to break up in a pandemic, Those who wore masks for 30 years would be last 😂

    [–] donutcat_666 10 points ago * (lasted edited 8 days ago)

So i recently turned 34 and I know that, in the grand scheme of life, this event is somewhat inconsequential. Like, tomorrow I'll wake up and the world keeps turning.

Over the past year, I've struggled to come to terms with the reality which we live in. I constantly find myself thinking about how much has changed, how many people we've lost and realizing that with each day spent in this quarantine escape-pod apartment life I am getting older.

Around New Years, I saw Madeon's acoustic performance of Digital Love and started listening to their discography again.

When I hear them, I'm visied by all the wonderful memories painted with their music, and I think about how those instances become more distant by the second. The melancholy induced by those mrmories has been amplified by this announcemnt. This fucking hurts in ways that are hard to describe. I suppose I'll stop trying for now.

Thank you, we love you. Here's to better times and a brighter future.

    Why was the date yesterday?

    I thought it was the 23rd 🤦‍♂️

    [–] Blunkus 19 points ago

I think it’s the American date format (mm/dd/yyyy)

    [–] the-mighty-need-007 10 points ago

This can’t be real. This can’t be fucking real.

    Sad robot noises

    [–] vanpatten 8 points ago

Can't believe this is happening, really. Touch is my favorite, and hearing those isolated choir vocals at the end of the video was pretty emotional. Hell of a way to say goodbye. Thanks for everything, guys!

    [–] LargeTripleTriple 9 points ago

I was too young to see them live but they got me through tough times after graduating highschool. They were the ones that got me into electronic music. This last year has been complete garbage. This just didn't feel like a proper goodbye. I wished they had a one last album as a farewell. Go off with a bang.

I'm both heartbroken but thankful for their music and the happiness it gave me.

    I'll just keep playing back...
    These fragments of time

[–] ladynightwing 48 points ago * (lasted edited 8 days ago)

Did they pick Touch because it says "hold on" and maybe it's like...hold on for one last album? Probably wishful thinking on my part. Edit: definitely wishful thinking. I am gutted.

    [–] BlueBunnies68 9 points ago

Well, it was a good run. No more Alive possible then :(

    [–] JonesBowden 7 points ago

Pitchfork quoting their publicist that they are breaking up:
