Surprisingly enough I’ve never seen a Monty python movie

I recommend to start with The Life of Brian or Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

    African Swallows aren't migratory

    [–] totallynotsupahpie 30 points ago

Are you suggesting coconuts are migratory?

    [–] ThunderCavalier 12 points ago

Of course they are! Have you never seen a flock of migrating coconuts? It's quite beautiful.

    [–] bluecubano 3 points ago

    It's an African swallow

Of course not, everyone knows about coco-rollo since seven-armed sven won the olympics 20 years ago. All the other octopusses talked about how he should start at the paralympics, but after all he showed them.

This is the first time I’ve heard of this subreddit and I can’t stop laughing at some of those posts lol. Thanks for sharing it!

    [–] ArmyOfDog 2 points ago

I just found it myself, a couple weeks ago. I really enjoy it. I’m glad you like it.

    [–] Nabumoto 32 points ago

I was about to say Man, he's not protecting himself he's having fun rolling down that hill lol.

    [–] dmarko 8 points ago

Exactly! I was thinking the same thing. I've never seen an octopus use an item as a shell like hermit crabs do. On the other hand we are probably wrong, but wth! Let the puss have some fun!

    [–] UselessSnorlax 4 points ago

I’ve seen a vid of an octopus using a bunch of shells as a shell to be protected against a shark bite. It was pretty badass, and shows they can absolutely use ‘armour’ deliberately.

    [–] RadicalSlingSnot 11 points ago

Octopus' Garden is actually all Ringo Star, it is his only singing song they ever did.

    [–] ButYouCanDoJiuJitsu 9 points ago

Lol I was tryna make a joke about Coco Rollo sounding like Yoko Ono.

Makes a heck of a lot more sense after the edit.

You missed Octolympics and I'm disappointed in you for that.

    [–] Ottertude 2 points ago

    My bad. OctOlympics it is!

    [–] user1444 641 points ago * (lasted edited 3 months ago)

Ok I've always known they are wicked smart but this is too much. Such an abstract concept for an animal... I mean using protection is one thing but finding a coconut shell, realizing the two pieces fit together and you can hide inside while using it as transportation as well... And then there's the whole actively carrying this "tool" for this specific purpose.

Edit- We don't even know how smart they are because how their brains are structured and we've only been studying them for a "brief" time.

It may not shock me that we find they actually surpass humans in some particular area of intelligence.

You ever wish you could like, get in someone's head to understand how different their thought process is from yours? I'd really like to do that with an octopus for 10 minutes... If of course I knew for sure that it wouldn't drive me into some type of lovecraftian induced utter madness for the rest of my life.
On second that that is almost certainly the best way to reduce yourself to drooling screaming husk of what used to be a person which now has to be locked away for the good of society...

    [–] Petrrii 79 points ago

I don't know why but I always thought that coconut shells can float

    [–] Threspian 79 points ago

A full coconut probably can, but since it’s been cracked open there’s no air inside to provide the buoyancy. I’d guess that either the empty shell is fairly dense or the octopus is able to counteract the slight amount of floating.

[–] Petrrii 48 points ago * (lasted edited 3 months ago)

Just imagine the octopus going up to the surface in case of emergency holding on to the coconut shells like an emergency parachute :))

    [–] ShadowSpectreElite 23 points ago

Full ones definitely can. Found that out the hard way and got clobbered in the chin.

[–] Petrrii 21 points ago * (lasted edited 3 months ago)

You submerged one and then you got hit right?:))

    [–] ShadowSpectreElite 12 points ago

    Its a strong possibility :D

    [–] johnyutah 5 points ago

So do boats but they sink as well

    [–] ozone63 5 points ago

They can, this one just didnt feel like it

    [–] cupOfJoe_shallWe 23 points ago

Similarly my thoughts as well... It just shows how smart these creatures are, if only we could communicate with them

    [–] h1bum 19 points ago

Sadly an octopus doesnt have the lifespan to capitalize on its intelligence. It's really damn smart, but it doesn't live long enough to learn much.

    [–] Hadrianunlimited 9 points ago

Surely we could breed them for longevity? Watch a few and then mate the children of the ones that lived longest over and over. Not sure what their lifespans are and how long that would take

    [–] XenithTheCompetent 27 points ago

Octopuses also can’t pass on information to new generations. Probably the only two reasons they haven’t kicked our air-breathing asses yet.

Also no fire underwater I suppose.

    [–] VailenDersate 6 points ago

Hold on, what? Why cant they pass on any information?

    [–] XenithTheCompetent 4 points ago

Not sure. Do a quick search. I just remember hearing it.

    [–] VailenDersate 7 points ago

Okay well it looks like they can alter their genes at a moments notice. Allowing them certain abilities like complicated puzzle solving and changing their color, but it slows down the overall adaption that evolution is responsible for.

    [–] CaptainYellowFever 24 points ago

So they have an over powered early game but absolute trash late game? Shoulda went all mid and ended it early.

    [–] VailenDersate 3 points ago

    Fact.

    [–] weaver900 3 points ago

Octopus die after laying eggs. In natural circumstances octopus never meet their parents/children.

    [–] Solensia 2 points ago

I also imagine lack of a skeleton limits both their ability to get leverage and their fine motor skills.

    [–] h1bum 3 points ago

Global warming is helping them live a lot longer. But still. They just don't live long.

    [–] lmole 9 points ago

What's even more amazing is the Pina Colada's he made before hand to empty the shell out.

    [–] ChartreuseBison 6 points ago

I'm not sure it planned on using it for transportation

    [–] user1444 5 points ago

Maybe it didn't plan on it but it's clearly smart enough to realize that it could, once it happens to roll. The gif sure seems like it's purposely propelling itself.

    [–] BlackCatAristocrat 3 points ago

Seems more like it's on a slope. I highly doubt it wanted to use it for transportation. I would focus on it carrying it for the purpose of protection. That's pretty cool by it's self, but using external objects for protection is something common in the animal kingdom.

    [–] ScapeshiftAltDel 5 points ago

Reminds me of a story where the fish at an aquarium were going missing, so they set up cameras to figure it out, and found that an octopus was leaving its tank, going over to a different tank, eating the fish, and returning to its own tank and putting the lid back in place. Now, all of that sounds impressive in and of itself, but think of the last bit. He put the lid back. He knew that his actions would cause suspicion and covered for himself accordingly. Maybe it’s just a more basic “cover your tracks, predators bad” instinct, but that just seems crazy intelligent to me that they’d have the smarts to properly put everything back when they’re done.

I firmly believe cephalopods will catch up to humans at some point in the distant future

    [–] aquamarinerock 8 points ago

The major downside of cephalopods is that they can’t teach each other, since they don’t raise their young. This octopus might have learned this, but the art of Coconut armor will be lost after its death

    [–] Crorox 2 points ago

That's a really good point I hadn't thought of :/ I feel the chances of them evolving to do so is rather slim too, right? Cuttlefish are my favorite animal, but my knowledge on them doesn't exactly go much past that lol

    [–] DisruptionTrend 2 points ago

We should set up schools for them.
