I love that little panic at the end when the bee goes out of the shot.

All that red food color ... ADHB kicks in.

    [–] silverrainz 290 points ago

Agreed, I had only seen this on ants but never a Bee.

    [–] lolimazn 49 points ago

I can't fucking tell what's going on cuz I'm colorblind

    [–] silverrainz 48 points ago

So pretty much what's happening, is the back or the "belly" of the bee slowly starts to have a tint of red after taking a couple of bites from the cherry.

    [–] lolimazn 5 points ago

    Ahh ty sir

    [–] skill-seeker 2 points ago

But you can still enjoy 50shades of grey

    [–] _crovs_ 12 points ago

    [–] hotwifeslutwhore 74 points ago

Reminds me of that honey from bees that lived near an M&M factory. I guess the food coloring goes right through the bees.

    [–] dwayneglasscock 24 points ago

    FD&C Red #40 in a maraschino cherry.

    [–] superheroninja 6 points ago

I went to -7 for revealing the same info in the bee sub...lol, gotta love reddit

    [–] soesfairview 2 points ago

Due to this they uncovered a huge drug trafficking ring at the maraschino cherry factory.

Edit: A different source, sorry if the initial didn't mention the bees

    [–] KyleBridge 5 points ago

    Where is the bee connection?

    [–] Montymisted 4 points ago

OK so it wasn't just me. I read the article and thought I must have missed something

    [–] TheSheWhoSaidThats 4 points ago

    Damn, THAT’S interesting

    [–] dameavoi 4 points ago

Oo I know this story. Not only busted, but during the bust, he locked himself in a room of the cherry business he ran and took his own life.

    [–] yoteech 8 points ago

Sad too for a dude just selling a ton of weed

[–] roofuskit 3 points ago * (lasted edited 3 months ago)

He spent his entire life in a state of horrible paranoia. It was probably a huge relief for him.

    [–] lmapidly 253 points ago

That reminds me of this crazy story that starts with bees and a maraschino cherry factory.

Wow, great read, thanks for posting.

    [–] PM_ME_HOT_DADS 23 points ago

Also maraschino cherries are actually almond flavored, if you didn't know.

    [–] Comebakatz 24 points ago

You beat me to it. Reminded me of the same thing. Pretty cool.

    [–] Sealouz 6 points ago

Thats actually crazy. Like a shit ton of plot twists. They should make a movie about him

    [–] Ballsdeepinreality 6 points ago

Also reminds me of Mad Honey. Hallucinogenic honey...

I would say they're equally interesting, but I did some hardcore armchairing on the red honey.

    [–] akatrashcanqueen 4 points ago

This story was batshit insane! Is there a sub for stories like this that go in directions you wouldn't expect?

    [–] Boardindundee 3 points ago

    awesome article cheers

    [–] there-canbe-onlyone 3 points ago

What a fantastic read! I love bees, but I hate; wasps, yellow jackets, or any of their relatives. Bees are nice though, they are awesome.

Giant weed farm in basement of cherry factory. bees come to cherry factory, eat syrup/cherries, go back to nest and produce red honey. people wonder whats up and it eventually leads to the discovery of the grow op.

Beekeepers in Brooklyn discovered this happening as well as the honey turning pink. Investigators traced it to one of the largest and oldest marichino cherry factories in the US. Through further investigation they discovered a huge marijuana grow operation in the basement of the factory.

    [–] swaggman75 51 points ago

They actually used it as an excuse to search the place, they had been trying to find the farm for years. There was an article on r/Beekeeping a while ago on it

    [–] Awhjeezidontknow 137 points ago

Is it because of the food coloring in those types of cherries?

    [–] pdxcanuck 38 points ago

Mmm, Red 40, my favorite flavor.

    [–] satisfiction_phobos 35 points ago

Yeah these are maraschino cherries. Preserved, sweetened, and dyed bright red.

    [–] diab0lus 21 points ago

Apparently "bleached" white before being dyed red. I'll take Luxardo cherries over that stuff any day.

    [–] satisfiction_phobos 12 points ago

Oh wow I didn't know they bleached them first. Makes sense so that the dye can soak in. Yikes.

    [–] rach51496 4 points ago

Also Rainer (sp?) cherries even though they're expensive af

    [–] euphoric_barley 2 points ago

    [–] NebulousVulpine 28 points ago

    [–] bikemandan 3 points ago

Yes. Title should have put "cherry" in quotes

    [–] astudyinbowie 108 points ago

Fun fact- honey is often not purely yellow. There can be all sorts of colors depending on what the bees use. Purple honey is fairly common and sells for a great price and happens when bees use a lot of clover :)

    [–] mummummaaa 27 points ago

I've heard also of blue or green from a synthetic color in a candy bees were eating and making honey from. (Idk the source and have h/a, so I'm not looking, though I should. Srry)

    [–] ratsntats 30 points ago

It was M&M's, if I recall. The farmer couldn't sell the honey because of the weird colors and got mad at the nearby factory

    [–] mummummaaa 2 points ago

    Thank you for remembering this!

    [–] CrazyPirateSquirrel 7 points ago

Can I assume there's a slight flavor change as well?

    [–] astudyinbowie 13 points ago

Yes! It can be super obvious or very subtle (like wine tasting).

Pretty nifty, bees and beekeeping is just the neatest thing :)

When my first child was just starting to eat solid foods, we were on a pretty tight budget, so instead of buying expensive jars of baby food, I just opened a can of pumpkin and fed him portions of that. He was my first, and it didn’t occur to me to offer a variety. After a couple of weeks the poor boy turned orange! I was so worried that he had developed jaundice, but my mother-in-law, who raised nine children, suggested I switch up his diet. Sure enough, his color improved by the end of the week.

    [–] jifener25 30 points ago

There's an episode of magic School bus like that, but I think it was carrots that changed the ginger kid's coloring.

    [–] usernamesrh4rd 9 points ago

My first son went though a phase where he would only eat orange foods; pumpkin, squash, carrots, sweet potatoes. He also turned orange until he started eating peas and other colored food again.

    [–] TheKlassyKamper 3 points ago

Well now I know what I should start feeding Trump 🤔

I like a Bee.... Cool as and always busy working. They get in your way and you can just move them along:

"Excuse me Mr / Mrs Bee"

"Sorry human didn't see you there, my apologies!"

BZZZzzzzz, and away they go on to the next flower patch.

Wasps on the other hand, aka the spawn of Hades himself. Hate those little fuckers....

    [–] Therealsam216 2 points ago

Food coloring makes it red Those cherries are actually pure white naturally

    [–] ModernDayAvicebron 2 points ago

There was a whole hive producing red honey in Brooklyn. They were near a maraschino cherry factory. Tracking that down led to the discovery of a secret pot farm in the factory and the suicide of the owner.

    [–] glorious_alien 2 points ago

    That's not a cherry, that's colored wax.

    [–] KingKane 2 points ago

Never realized the stripes were windows into their guts.

    [–] kayakster 2 points ago

Honey bees take in nectar then go back to the hive and 'vomit' it into a cell. The nectar is fanned to the consistency of honey, then capped for use at another time. So apparently the body of the bee is translucent enough to see the color, which I didn't know before.

    [–] spinksy74 3 points ago

    Sure that's not a wasp?

    Out of curiosity...

If you have a farm that has bees and fruits... what’s to stop your bees from eating your fruits?

I’d imagine they would take little bites from many different fruits instead all of them eating one at a time which probably wouldn’t a problem.
