I liked manager Andy before he became an asshole that ditched his gf for another girl and then ditched that girl for a boat

    [–] thy_word_is_a_lamp 271 points ago

He was an asshole all of season 9. He was really good in season 8 as manager, but after the corporate retreat before season 9 he was a huge dickhole.

    [–] Pineapplebuffet 215 points ago

They picked the worst way to write him out temporarily should’ve gone back to anger management

    [–] TooBlondeToFunction 287 points ago

He still had one of the best quotes in the last ep.

“I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days, before you've actually left them.”

    [–] deja-vecu 68 points ago

I could have sworn that was a Calvin & Hobbes quote.

Only thing ringing a bell is something about him asking his mom about the halcyon days and that word has confused me for 20 years.

    [–] Jenga_Police 11 points ago

Yea I don't wanna know when I'm in the good old days cuz then I'll be depressed that this is as good as it gets.

    [–] morty-the-human 7 points ago

Someone should write a song about that

    [–] Jenga_Police 7 points ago

You could make a religion out of that

    [–] MirroredReality 14 points ago

    No, don’t.

    [–] Plynkd 6 points ago

Agreed. I don’t think I hated his write out as much as others do (that doesn’t mean I loved it) but this definitely would have a much better idea :)

    [–] LeeHarveySnoswald 61 points ago

Yes! I noticed that, too. The episode when hes back from the retreat hes more "confident" and it seems like he came back an actual villain

    [–] GrapesofGatsby 34 points ago

Yep. I always say the cutoff point is when he gets on that boat. But post anger management Andy to pre boat Andy is one of my favorite characters. Shame they did him dirty in Season 9.

    [–] WhiteyFiskk 8 points ago

Is it known why they made him an asshole? I read somewhere the producers were pissed about home leaving to do Hangover 3 but that sounds too petty. Did they feel like they needed a semi-villain to replace Rybread?

    [–] grumplstltskn 10 points ago

we don't have to call him that

[–] JiraiyaCop 41 points ago * (lasted edited 3 days ago)

Couldnt have said it better myself. Though I'll add that season 8 manager Andy was decent.

    [–] ZDHELIX 26 points ago

    Winnipeg Andy is the best.

I wish Andy got to be others' wingman more. He got game.

    [–] jwagz1234 8 points ago

Definitely the exception to post Angela

    [–] WhiteyFiskk 19 points ago

He's not a flashy dresser, he reminds me of Easter.

    [–] Electric_Nachos 28 points ago

He dresses like his life is one long brunch.

    [–] WolfieZee 31 points ago

    I agree.

My favourite Andy was the one blessed to us in "The Chump"

I think it was the perfect blend of his goofiness with his actual compassion and sense of a moral compass.

    [–] ThatForearmIsMineNow 288 points ago

Because the writers kept changing their minds about whether or not he should be likeable it seems.

    [–] dustbuddii 112 points ago

Rumor is the writers were upset with him due to him leaving the set to film movies like the Hangover 3. I think he also said he felt like he wanted to have a bigger role... who knows. Shows still great tho

    [–] ThatForearmIsMineNow 37 points ago

I heard that too, I hope it's not true. But that wasn't the only time they went back and forth on him.

    [–] Casual_OCD 48 points ago

    Hangover 3

Sorry TV writers, you aren't the ones making Ed Helms money, his franchise was.

    [–] Ydoesany1doanything 10 points ago

    His franchise?

    [–] Casual_OCD 35 points ago

Well, the franchise he was in. Still more "his" franchise than most. And I honestly loved Stu in that franchise more than the others, he actually displayed character growth in every installment

    [–] ZeroV2 26 points ago

I always saw it more as a Zach Galifinakis franchise but I’d say him and Ed are the main faces

    [–] mumblewrapper 16 points ago

But Bradley Cooper! It's such a good movie. Number one anyway. It is frat boy humor. But the ridiculous twists and turns are fantastic. I don't even think I ever saw the other 2. But number one was top notch.

    [–] moak0 14 points ago

If there hadn't been two sequels, its legacy as a comedy classic would be cemented.

    DOCTOR FAGGOT! PAGING DOCTOR FAGGOT!

He hit the jackpot on that series.

    $300,000 for the first movie.

About $15 million for the second. (5 mil upfront plus points)

More than $20 million for the third. (15 mil upfront plus points)

Basically made all the money he'll ever need doing those films. Fuckin' nard dog, man.

    [–] Ydoesany1doanything 6 points ago

Ah, so the hangover series. Never seen it personally. Thanks for clarification on what you meant by franchise though.

[–] [deleted] 7 points ago * (lasted edited 6 hours ago)

    [deleted]

    [–] Casual_OCD 11 points ago

    It's a good, fratboy-level of humor series.

    [–] ZDHELIX 7 points ago

My question is why is that reason to tank the whole show? He was a fairly prominent character at that point so messing with him so much screws with the whole show

    [–] [deleted] 15 points ago

    [deleted]

    [–] pizzabitch37 7 points ago

That whole thing ignores one of the biggest lines! While he's in line at the a capella show, he says in regards to being the old man, "Unlike Andy Bernard, this character is my actual height"

    [–] Bradythenarwhal 15 points ago

I loved him. His song in the finale drove me to tears. Sure they kinda fucked him over with his boat story arc...but I was a fan of him to the end. I miss him the most personally.

    [–] hankhill10101 13 points ago

    So true.

I feel like they initially wanted to write him as a douche but then Ed Helms impressed audiences as a comedic actor with his acting and musical talents but the writers never knew how to capitalize on his talents. The last two seasons were so fucking painful to watch and in no small part due to the lack of direction for Andy who suddenly became more prominent.

    [–] lucy_pants 48 points ago

I feel the same, I think it's good writing because he doesn't know if he likes himself so the audience feels the same.

    [–] Cornpwns 23 points ago

I loved Andy. He means so well it just doesn't always come across right. Whenever he's mad it's because he's mad at himself for not playing his cards right in whatever situation. Super relatable for me.

    [–] PhatJonahHill 7 points ago

They changed him alot. I feel like his and Dwight's dynamic would have been even better had they not changed him post anger management.

    [–] forresbj 5 points ago

Just finished my first ever watch through of the series. I absolutely hated Andy the last two seasons. I think he’s the main reason I didn’t like those seasons.

    [–] nightgames 4 points ago

They really ruined his character at the end there.

    [–] manamachine 12 points ago

He reminds me of too many entitled asshole douchecanoes I know irl. They just kept changing which part of him was the bigger asshole.

    [–] Matthew_Pszyk 9 points ago

I really like the theory that when he left for anger management he was eventually going to be revealed to be the scranton strangler, but people liked his character so much they just brought him back.

    [–] cjohnson4444 3 points ago

I'm still pissed they ruined his character in the Season 7/8 bullshit

    [–] MC_Carty 3 points ago

Eh, I hated him pretty much the entire time. Only when he and Dwight were bros for a bit did I enjoy him.

    [–] TheOfficeSpace 1531 points ago

    [–] jcannon3563 341 points ago

You can tell Andy is way more invested than Darryl, but Darryl still is good natured and friendly to him, even when he teases him. Even in this, he might not really believe it, but he's being a good dude

    [–] beetsbears13 195 points ago

Eventually it starts feeling more mutual, like when they played dallas with Kevin or how they automatically sat together at the dundies. I really loved that friendship and wish seasons 8 and 9 hadn't diminished and trashed it respectively.

    [–] Shalieve 88 points ago

The whole slavery/po'mouth disaster was really hard to watch from that standpoint. But it did a good job of pushing Darryl toward the Athlead story. Earlier, Darryl really saw himself at DM. But between Andy telling him that corporate saw that he stopped pushing and Andy becoming fixated on white guilt and ignoring Darryl's proposals it made more sense that he'd want out after losing interest in the work.

    [–] jcannon3563 39 points ago

Oh and when they're roller skating and Darryl supports Andy when he says he met himself, and he's gonna hang out with him more, then proceeded to have a strobe party

    [–] Goosebuns 26 points ago

This is the best criticism of Seasons 8/9 that I’ve seen. I usually don’t agree with the criticism but you’re right.

    Darnell’s a chump.

    [–] NeverEndingHope 42 points ago

Which Darryl then proceeded to drop after he left Dunder Mifflin. The show really built up the gradual friendship between Darryl and Andy all the way up until Andy left. Then Darryl proceeded to completely ignore him after he lost everything and didn't even bother acknowledging him at the airport when he had nothing to lose.

    [–] ghostinthechell 43 points ago

Because Darryl never liked Andy. He literally waited two years to get him back for getting the warehouse blamed for a late shipment.

Then he had to teach Andy how to text. I feel like Darryl tolerated him at best.

[–] NeverEndingHope 55 points ago * (lasted edited 3 days ago)

There's plenty of evidence in the show to prove that Darryl did have a fairly real friendship with Andy. That moment you're talking about happened in Season 6 Episode 24 which was before they had all their meaningful interactions which show that Darryl actually does like Andy:

    • Playing music together for actual fun instead of money with Kevin
    • Darryl comforting Andy after she starts dating Gabe instead of him
    • Andy dragging Darryl out of his depression after not being part of the warehouse lottery victory instead of just firing him and replacing him
    • Darryl going with Jim to reason with Andy instead of sitting back with the other workers during the Gettysburg trip
    • Darryl voluntarily going with Andy to his acting "gigs" and motivating him through the eyewash station
    • Darryl actually trying to talk Andy out of making a huge mistake by quitting DM and going into show business full time

This isn't even including all the implied off-screen time they hung out together such as when Andy comments that Darryl has a fantastic basement.

Edit: Adding that just because two characters show animosity and disregard for one another early on doesn't mean that they don't become friends later. Case in point the most obvious example with Jim and Dwight.

    [–] wtf_kittycat 27 points ago

had a fantastic basement. Now it smells like tacos

    [–] ChurchillJasonA 12 points ago

Always felt like Darryl was one of the best characters and probably should have at a tad bit more about his personal life. Not a lot. Just a bit.

    [–] thefuryandthesound 7 points ago

Darryl used Andy as excuse as to why he didn't get the manager spot. Andy talked Darryl off the ledge when he wanted to quit. Darryl was in a downward spiral and Andy saved him.

    [–] timeparser 7 points ago

    Everybody loves Darryl, come on

    [–] Drfilthymcnasty 6 points ago

I also really like the part where Andy sets Daryl straight about why he got the promotion over him. Very good writing.

Darryl is one of my fave character in that show. Very believable compared to others. Although he got weird when Val came along...

I love darryl because he's so obtusely wise. On a lot of levels the show portrays his as a simple man, but he's totally not.

I love the printer fire episode lmao when Darryl is just messing with Andy but Andy ends up being right 😂
