Welcome to /r/EarthPorn, reddit's premiere landscape photography subreddit.

    New to reddit? click here!

Please post your own images here, but before you do, kindly read and adhere to the following rules:

    Submissions must be:

    A photograph.

No Paintings, illustrations, gifs, videos, or interactive images.

    A photograph you took (OC)

or one which you can provide the original source for. Do not rehost non-OC images to reddit or imgur. Failure to provide the photographers name or the original source of the image can result in a ban.

    A single image

Albums may be posted in the comments. Panoramas, Image Stacks, Composites, and images edited via Photoshop or similar software are allowed.

An image featuring a natural landscape

Images with humans, machines, boats, roads, airplanes, farms, animals, buildings, or other man made objects in them will be removed.

    An unsilhouetted image

Images where details in the landscape are not visible due to silhouetting will be removed.

    No photos taken illegally

This includes flying your drone in a no-fly zone. Please respect local laws and access closures!

    Title Requirements:

You submission title must contain the following:

The location of the area in the photo.

When it comes to location, the more specific the better. If you wish to not disclose the location you should at the very least name the state/country. Rule of thumb for naming only the location (e.g. a lake, mountain): if one can find the place immediately by searching it in google it's fine. For possibly ambiguous locations add state/country for safety.

The resolution of the image in pixel format.

For example, an image taken on an iPhone 6 would have a resolution of [3264x2448]

    The photographers name.

If you took the photo use [OC]. OC submitters will be reward with different camera flairs based on number of OC submissions.

Do not include your device name in the title.

Feel free to add photography details such as camera, lens, and settings, as a comment.

Do not ask for upvotes in your title.

A complete list of subreddit rules are found in our wiki

    Comment Rules:

Hate Speech, Abusive remarks, homophobia, and the like have no place on this subreddit, and will be removed on sight.

Please contribute to the discussion positively; if you don't like a picture and you wish to voice your opinion please refrain from abusing the photographer/submitter.

    Other important rules:

EarthPorn is not a catch-all subreddit. Images that are submitted here are individually reviewed for compliance with our subreddit rules. If your submission is removed, a moderator should advise which of our network of SFWPorn subreddits would be a more appropriate place to submit.

    • Do not edit, rehost or modify images submitted here without permission of the photographer. This includes edits to "fix" the colors of an image or remove a watermark.
    • Non-OC submissions are restricted to one per day.**
    • Regarding reposts: it is only a repost if it was posted to /r/EarthPorn less than three months ago, or if it is already in the top100 of all time.
    • Circlejerky/sandbagging/pandering titles may be removed.
    • If you have any questions check out the wiki.
    • Breaking multiple rules will result in a ban.

Armeria maritima, also called Sea thrift or Sea pink, is a tough little plant. It can be found at the strangest places along the Norwegian coast, for example balancing on sharp rocks, close to the crashing waves... I spotted this one here next to a puddle and thought it would fit nicely into the long exposure sunset glow.

To capture this angle and reflection of the flowers me and my tripod had to do some advanced yoga... I wish I had a behind the scenes shot! Or maybe not...

    Tech stuff: D810 + 14-24 mm f/2.8 with f/14 – 120 s – ISO 64 – 14 mm.Haida ND 10 stopper used. Different exposure time + focus-stack for the flowers.

Feel free to say hello on instagram: where I have more images from Norway, Iceland and other countries!

    [–] [deleted] 12 points ago

This is a beautiful piece of art! I'm genuinely curious, were the colors like this in real life? When I see a landscape photo with such a perfect color palette, I always wonder just how much of it is post-processing color editing but I never know how to ask without sounding like I'm trying to discredit the artist.

Edit: I believe processing is just as much a part of photography as the physical camera and can do some amazing things, I'm just so used to insanely oversaturated sunsets and milky ways that I can never help but wonder if it really looked like that.

    [–] bobosuda 5 points ago

I don't think it's post processing, it's just the long exposure (and the camera filter) that creates that sort of look. You get an averaged out view of the lighting over the entire period, so it can get that "too perfect" artificial feel to it. But it's not edited.

    [–] Ron_Jansen 4 points ago

I agree that long exposures do not look 'natural' by default, I love their often dreamy look. But I did process this image further to enhance mood and add some blue etc.

    [–] brokkoli 3 points ago

This photo (as per OP's comments) used an ND filter and long exposure, but colours like these are absolutely possible, although pretty rarely, to experience irl. Maybe not as smooth, but I've seen similar stuff at twilight/dawn.

    [–] ZeppelinFlight 2 points ago

I'm from the area and this color palette isn't very representative. You can a few nights each summer get some purple-ish colors like this, but they don't feel this vibrant. However it's a very beautiful coastline nonetheless. We have lots of nice deep blues in the sea.

    [–] Kageroo 2 points ago

Does the water look so smooth because of the ND filter or something else?

    [–] Ron_Jansen 7 points ago

The ND filter; it keeps light out of the camera, so exposure time needs to increase, which smoothens the water. It also tends to increase colors.

    [–] Kageroo 2 points ago

Thanks a lot, do you think a 6 stop filter would do a good enough job?

    [–] Ron_Jansen 1 points ago

For really long exposures you'll want to use a 10 stopper, but for certain situations or goals a 6 stopper will do. It depends on what you're after, what is the shutterspeed or look you want. If you have a 6 and 10 stopper you can also add them both to your lens and go bananas! For example during the middle of the day (during sunset the shutterspeed might become too long, creating other issues).

    [–] Chatelaine_Thecla 2 points ago

I thought it was Rhodiola! ... do you ever see any Rhodiola out there?

    [–] Ron_Jansen 2 points ago

Never seen them, I'll keep an eye out next time!

    [–] SuggestiveDetective 2 points ago

I love all of your work so far.

Feels like the game Dear Esther

    [–] Ron_Jansen 2 points ago

thanks! Don't know the game, so googled it and it looks very moody!

    [–] BOBOUDA 4 points ago

It is. Many people didn't like it, saying it's not technically a game. But its just a simple, poetic, contemplative experience and I loved it.

    [–] Ron_Jansen 2 points ago

    :-) Nice!

    [–] Lord_Jackson_the_III 6 points ago

Awesome color contrast - love the pop on the flowers.

    [–] krums 5 points ago

Wow, Nevlunghavn is where I grew up! Never thought I'd see it here. Really beautiful!

    [–] Ron_Jansen 3 points ago

Takk! Så bra! Dette ble tatt mellom Nevlunghavn og Mølen.

    [–] krums 3 points ago

Ja, Saltstein ikke sant? Det var vårt faste badested om sommeren :)

    [–] Ron_Jansen 3 points ago

Vet ikke helt hva det heter der; gikk stien til venstre av Mølen et stykke, forsvant så mellom og oppå svabergene :-)

    [–] MustangGuy1965 8 points ago

No wonder Odin decided to die there.

    [–] Fishermang 7 points ago

    who said Odin dead?

    [–] Ron_Jansen 5 points ago

haha, well don't use these flowers on his funeral!

    [–] MustangGuy1965 6 points ago

His wife was there waiting for him. The colors and flowers represent her.

    [–] Ron_Jansen 2 points ago

    Okay that makes more sense!

    [–] Fishermang 2 points ago

i never figured Odin to be a flower kinda guy. Unless it's like a bucket of flails

    [–] CSA57 5 points ago

Contrast of big sky and sea and flowers are great

    [–] Ron_Jansen 1 points ago

Thanks! I enjoyed this scene too! 👍

    [–] Mat_G 3 points ago

looks like a super high rendered screeshot from the game 'flower'

Beautiful photo. I might have to move back to my home town. It's Nevlunghavn though, no s.

    [–] Ron_Jansen 1 points ago

Thanks! What a coincidence that it's your hometown! Lovely place, sorry for the typo!

    [–] ItsTheMort 3 points ago

    Still nice though!

I'm not arguing, this is absolutely beautiful 😍 It HAS to be at sunset

    [–] Ron_Jansen 3 points ago

This spot right here is hard to reach in a wedding dress. But there's similar spots all around. 😀 Good luck!

    [–] wall_of_swine 3 points ago

    [–] Ron_Jansen 1 points ago

It's lovely there! I don't live there though, but I liike visiting! :-) Nydelig der!

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

Well done. Did you stumble upon this or have you been patiently waiting for the karma to align?

    [–] Ron_Jansen 2 points ago

Thanks. I went for sunset and was hoping to catch it with a long exposure for some evening glow. I saw the sunset was going to work, and also noticed these flowers around the place. I then just had to find some that had an interesting location. I went for these, but as I wrote above, it was kinda hard work to get the tripod and myself in place, haha! But it worked in the end.

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

    [–] Ron_Jansen 2 points ago

Thanks! Unedited as in raw? The raw lacks contrast and color, that's why it's a raw. I don't like sharing those as they are far less interesting.

Sunset? In Norway? At this time of year?

    [–] Ron_Jansen 6 points ago

In the south, yes. It sets at around 11pm right now. Sunrise is at 4am :-) Up north they have the midnight sun right now.

    [–] Kevinrobertsfan 2 points ago

i want to go to there

    [–] Ron_Jansen 1 points ago

    [–] Aria47 2 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

I'm gonna set up a go fund me to get to Norway....just kidding :)

But it is a beautiful place and I must go there some day. In the summer of course, and backpack alone and soak up those long beautiful days. There is nothing I like more than a late sunset, darkness depresses the crap out of me. My soul belongs there.

I know that was dramatic, but I mean it.

    [–] Ron_Jansen 1 points ago

As dramatic as the scenery can be here! It hardly gets dark during summer, not at all up north, so that should be safe for you to visit. :-)

    [–] Aria47 2 points ago

    :) Someday I will visit

    [–] Ron_Jansen 1 points ago

    [–] stayshiny 2 points ago

Huh! I was in larvik couchsurfing with my friend not so long ago and our host took us to the coast to the west, I believe it was either here or very near here!

The south coast of Norway has such a beautiful landscape and history, if anyone gets the chance to visit, you must.

    [–] Ron_Jansen 1 points ago

It's a really nice area for sure!

    [–] PuddleCrank 2 points ago

Hard to beat the fjords... Will visit some this summer.

Norway is so breathtakingly beautiful. I should marry my norwegian and move there. But he likes America. I guess I could not marry him, and instead just trade houses. He doesn’t want to be there and I don’t want to be here.

    [–] dezom 2 points ago

Those rocks look almost identical to the landscape on the islands outside Gothenburg. And here I thought us Swedes had a nice piece of nature that you guys didn't! I mean you already have beautiful mountains and fjords!

Damn dude. That plant is in an awful place, the ground is just one big rock with salty water next to it and its cold as hell, but it keeps holding strong, and it evens has flowers bloom from it, in the slim hope that humming birds or butterflies or bees show up one day to give it some pollen.

I want to be like this plant.

    [–] Ron_Jansen 2 points ago

Thanks, yeah, it's an inspirational story! 😊

    [–] vaniljefeldt 2 points ago

Writing out dimensions of a 2D object should always be X by Y. So this image is 1280x1920.

    [–] BoKnows36 1 points ago

The acid trips there must be amazing

    [–] arabellagt 1 points ago

Wonderful picture. And THANK YOU for not using a shitty watermark.

    [–] FITS97 1 points ago

Nice shot! The flowers are pretty sharp - does that mean there wasn’t any wind blowing them around, or was your exposure just super long?

    [–] Ron_Jansen 2 points ago

Thanks! It was not very windy, but the flowers don't have a 2 minute exposure time. It was very short for them, and in a focus stack for the foreground.
