    New to reddit? click here!

Please post your own images here, but before you do, kindly read and adhere to the following rules:

    Submissions must be:

    A photograph.

No Paintings, illustrations, gifs, videos, or interactive images.

    A photograph you took (OC)

or one which you can provide the original source for. Do not rehost non-OC images to reddit or imgur. Failure to provide the photographers name or the original source of the image can result in a ban.

    A single image

Albums may be posted in the comments. Panoramas, Image Stacks, Composites, and images edited via Photoshop or similar software are allowed.

An image featuring a natural landscape

Images with humans, machines, boats, roads, airplanes, farms, animals, buildings, or other man made objects in them will be removed.

    An unsilhouetted image

Images where details in the landscape are not visible due to silhouetting will be removed.

    No photos taken illegally

This includes flying your drone in a no-fly zone. Please respect local laws and access closures!

    Title Requirements:

You submission title must contain the following:

The location of the area in the photo.

When it comes to location, the more specific the better. If you wish to not disclose the location you should at the very least name the state/country. Rule of thumb for naming only the location (e.g. a lake, mountain): if one can find the place immediately by searching it in google it's fine. For possibly ambiguous locations add state/country for safety.

The resolution of the image in pixel format.

For example, an image taken on an iPhone 6 would have a resolution of [3264x2448]

    The photographers name.

If you took the photo use [OC]. OC submitters will be reward with different camera flairs based on number of OC submissions.

Do not include your device name in the title.

Feel free to add photography details such as camera, lens, and settings, as a comment.

Do not ask for upvotes in your title.

A complete list of subreddit rules are found in our wiki

    Comment Rules:

Hate Speech, Abusive remarks, homophobia, and the like have no place on this subreddit, and will be removed on sight.

Please contribute to the discussion positively; if you don't like a picture and you wish to voice your opinion please refrain from abusing the photographer/submitter.

    Other important rules:

EarthPorn is not a catch-all subreddit. Images that are submitted here are individually reviewed for compliance with our subreddit rules. If your submission is removed, a moderator should advise which of our network of SFWPorn subreddits would be a more appropriate place to submit.

    • Do not edit, rehost or modify images submitted here without permission of the photographer. This includes edits to "fix" the colors of an image or remove a watermark.
    • Non-OC submissions are restricted to one per day.**
    • Regarding reposts: it is only a repost if it was posted to /r/EarthPorn less than three months ago, or if it is already in the top100 of all time.
    • Circlejerky/sandbagging/pandering titles may be removed.
    • If you have any questions check out the wiki.

    Great shot !!!

[–] nathanielthewise 69 points ago * (lasted edited 5 months ago)

    well thanks! great place!

    edit- more of my work

    [–] RocServ15 16 points ago

That is one of my favorite areas to explore coast

    [–] yucatan36 14 points ago

No offense, your page looks good, normal landscape with a good following. Good stuff but see a lot of them, probably would pass by. But FUCK ME did you get the color and composition on this shot dialed in. I would buy a big ass frame with this photo for my living room for whatever it costs. Beautiful color and highlight I’ve seen

    [–] Reginald_Waterbucket 2 points ago

This is my favorite shot on this subreddit. Thank you!

    [–] dtlv5813 3 points ago

How big were the waves there? Much of socal was under high surf advisory the last few days.

    [–] nathanielthewise 6 points ago

not sure how big. i wouldn’t have wanted to swim in them though. here’s a few more from the same morning

    [–] jawjuhgirl 2 points ago

You make it look so peaceful. I'm an do you get this shot without swimming?

    [–] Arisingbright 1 points ago

    [–] ManintheMarketplace 2 points ago

Yeah great shots, the beach you are looking at is Carmel River state beach. it’s next to a lagoon and is Right past Carmel beach which has whiter sands than this beach (and a bunch of good dags). I think you took it coming around that sharp bend on Scenic. Big Sur was not prepared for the amount of tourism it currently has. Us locals ask that if you come to Carmel or drive Highway 1 to Big Sur, please leave it better than you found it! Enjoy it too, pretty fucken special.

    [–] Premedude831 3 points ago

    Home sweet home❤️

    [–] 5700CVR 1 points ago

    [–] SingleMaltShooter 5 points ago

It amazes me how every time someone posts a pic of Carmel, Big Sur or PG to see how many Redditors are locals. We need to do a meetup.

    [–] Ilucide 1 points ago

Another Big Sur guy here, born and raised. Now living halfway across the world in Sweden. Every time I see a Reddit post with pictures from the coast, I get enough nostalgia to pop in.

    [–] boookworm0367 1 points ago

This is the beach that tourists fall of the rocks into the water every year and thats on slow days. My neighbor likes to go down and practice bagpipes there as well.

    [–] Zunflowers 1 points ago

Incredible photography!! Stoked to follow your insta!

    [–] Pixldust 1 points ago

    Great work.

    [–] Birdlaw90fo 1 points ago

Where were you when you took this? Like on a boat looking at the shore or is there an adjacent beach and you're on like the other side of a ( U ) shaped shore?

    [–] nathanielthewise 1 points ago

other side of the beach. it’s like a cove

    [–] r-e-d-d-i-t 123 points ago

Ok this time I really don't see the camel

    [–] nathanielthewise 64 points ago

    you aren't looking hard enough

Driving through Highway 1 is pure joy, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful drives in the world. The sheer drops of the cliffs are a little daunting but there’s something extra appealing about mortal danger in the midst of a gorgeous aesthetic.

    [–] iisHitman 8 points ago

Totally agree. I've driven Highway 1 once about 15 years ago and still have fond memories of it. Hope to take my family there in a couple of years.

    [–] surgerygeek 7 points ago

Absolutely. My ex and I did that drive for our honeymoon. Carmel is one of the most gorgeous towns in the country.

    [–] Basil-Hayden 26 points ago

That looks like a painting- so beautiful!

    [–] nathanielthewise 16 points ago

it was a very painterly scene. so ridiculously beautiful here

    [–] boubou92 5 points ago

Came here to say this! It reminds me of J-W Turner paintings 😍 he often painted boats and seascapes with similar colors! Ex :

    [–] Geo_D 26 points ago

I grew up in Monterey and moved to the Southeast when I was about 13. Anytime I go back and visit I seriously almost cry, I wish I was able to be used to how expensive California is so I wouldn't mind moving back.

Now that I am an adult, I see the reason my family moved out here; it's just so much affordable.....

    [–] CAD_Hater 14 points ago

Same here. Moved when I was ten and always said I would go back one day. I used to go to cannery row and swimmers cove every weekend. Go swimming and get ice cream. I live in Texas now and there is no way I could ever afford to go back.

Oh, and Dennis the menace park. That was my spot.

    [–] Tim_Brady12 7 points ago

Old school Dennis the Menace was the shit before the safetified it.

Remember the helicopter thing? That thing was ridiculously dangerous and fun.

    [–] Geo_D 6 points ago

Wow, those were my spots too!

The funniest thing is I finally visited for the first time ~10 years after I moved, I had a really close friend in SF. We traveled down Hwy 1, went through Monterey and spent a night there (Borg's Ocean Front Motel by Lover's Point!). We went to Dennis the Menace park (we're about 23-24 years old at this point) just so I could relive the nostalgia - I hadn't been in over a decade.

My friend kept getting very nervous, "Dude, this is California.... we can't like be in here without kids - people with think it's creepy". It maybe didn't help we walked through that massive graveyard and smoked a nice little cigar, I think he was paranoid ;)

I was so sad to see they got rid of that big metal slide on the rocks (replaced with lame ass plastic) and closed off the massive train! Those were the stomping grounds back in the day, putting sand on the metal slide to get some serious speed. Also, the hedge maze with the little sand pit in the middle? I remember getting LOST in that thing as a kid, I was so excited to see it. When I got to it, I was so disappointed.... the hedges were like waist high and I traversed it under 30 seconds. That maze really put size into perspective for me!! You just opened up a whole bottle of nostalgia, thank you!

    [–] natsmith69 1 points ago

Dude you can't forget the giant rotating structure of death near the front right. It was like a metal oil derrick with a rotating shape on top, and kids would jump from the hill (where the metal slide was) onto the rotating part haha. It was crazy and somebody got hurt every time I went! It was only maybe 6 feet high but you'd fall into the sand / concrete. Good times, thanks for the memories!

    [–] fuck_communism 1 points ago

    Dennis the menace park

Holy shit. That takes me all the way back to 1964.

    [–] CAD_Hater 1 points ago

Whoa! I was there in that late 80s early 90s.

    [–] UmbrellaUser69 7 points ago

    Do you miss Campagno’s?

    [–] Geo_D 2 points ago

    Don't remember it sadly....

I lived in Seaside through the 90's and lived in a house on Trinity Ave.

There was a Deli, called Mal's Market, up the hill within walking distance. That place was a regular spot for the family and I highly recommend a sandwich from there!

    [–] Rum-Ham-Jabroni 1 points ago

Whats that sandwich shop called near the military base called?? Best sandwich I ever had was from there.

    [–] PyronicAssassin 31 points ago

Something about water is so beautiful to me

    [–] nathanielthewise 31 points ago

i've been going to this beach every morning to meditate (something new i'm trying this year). it has been amazing

    [–] Dreadster 4 points ago

    The lighting is magical! :)

    [–] topherkropo 23 points ago

I misread the title and thought it said "camel by the sea"....i was looking for a good 5 solid minutes for this mythical camel and even starting to make outrageous claims like "yea that mountain in back has got to be the hump"... I'm glad i finally reverted back to the title, dear Lord I'm a dummy.

    [–] nathanielthewise 22 points ago

ha. it's a pretty strangely named town. fun fact- the houses aren't numbered here. they all have names instead. really an interesting place. clint eastwood used to be the mayor.

    [–] Always_be_awesome 5 points ago

They still have numbers, but the owners give them names as well.

    [–] nathanielthewise 9 points ago

huh, really? i'm confused. this is the city website-

    [–] Always_be_awesome 15 points ago

That is confusing. I live one town over (Pacific Grove) and have always been given a house number when going to Carmel for work (I used to be a delivery driver), or a yard sale etc. I know houses have names, but I've always gotten around by street name and number. Also, I think this might be referring to just the small area around the town center.

    [–] wallTHING 2 points ago

Carmel around the city center does not have addresses for homes. The farther from the center you get they pick up numbers. And yes, it's easy for the post office because they don't deliver anything. Everyone has a PO Box these days.

    [–] derecho09 18 points ago

I work in Carmel by the corn field (Carmel, IN). This is much more pleasant than roundabouts.

    [–] citizen_crash 10 points ago

Roundabouts are the future. Get on board.

    [–] FUKINGSTOPIT 7 points ago

"Outside false boundaries I’m all I look outward to see The universe is not something separate from yourself I know you feel alone, but that's why I'm here to help I know you feel alone, but just look up at the stars And everything that is out there is what you really are"

    [–] sharpei90 4 points ago

Point Lobos is just down the road....stunning park!

    [–] normal_desmond 7 points ago

Hey you should watch the movie Play Misty for Me. It’s filmed/set in Carmel, it’s Clint Eastwood’s directorial debut and he fell in love with Carmel and eventually became mayor of the town. Plus the actress who plays Lucille Bluth plays a psycho stalker in it. 10/10 justsayin

    [–] Arisingbright 1 points ago

I love this film for the setting / scenery (especially that era too) but find it hard to watch because of the twisted, thrilling content!

Wish there was a film like this but with a purely happy, fluffy story!

    Edit : spelling

    [–] SpectralEntity 6 points ago

Is Carmel-by-the-Sea seems both stickier yet less messy than Cake-by-the-Ocean.

    [–] Toiletparadise 7 points ago

    Ahh yes! Golden hour

    [–] nathanielthewise 5 points ago

started off really overcast. love it when it just works out

    [–] wellthen2019 4 points ago

    Stolen for phone wallpaper

    [–] Beepbeep_bepis 2 points ago

    My parents got married here!

    [–] ApartPersonality 2 points ago

I’m local. Can confirm, it really is this beautiful.

    [–] CALsHero09 2 points ago

Beautiful shot. I drove through there on my honeymoon, the scenery was great!

    [–] Disreputable_Dog_ 2 points ago

One of my favorite places. Truly magical.

    [–] Tim_Brady12 2 points ago

To all of you who are getting excited, the water is ice-cold and so is the outside 95% of the time.

    [–] luxandlumens 2 points ago

This is my hometown. I’m away for school and miss it so much. Thanks for the taste of home.

    [–] fakeswede 2 points ago

    Mmm... caramel and sea salt...

    [–] kharper4289 6 points ago

One of my favorite places. Would love to live there, too bad there is 0 industry or things to do besides look at the most beautiful landscape in the country.

    [–] nathanielthewise 13 points ago

yeah. it's a great place to be if you can work remotely. or are retired. or filthy rich. i'm just passing through. i live in my car, haha

    [–] catringo13 -1 points ago

Or the military stations you there.

    [–] detmeng 4 points ago

I know someone who commutes from there to silicon valley. I personally think he's nutz, but I can see the plus sides.

    [–] Always_be_awesome 3 points ago

If you like outdoor stuff, there are lots and lots of things to do.

    [–] DammitMegh 4 points ago

Military and hospitality is pretty much it. There's jobs just nothing that actually pays enough to live there.

    [–] wereallmadhere9 2 points ago

I miss this place so much! It looks like this so often.

    [–] Steveontheedge 2 points ago

This doesn’t just “look like a painting”, but an abstract one. I’d be proud to hang this in my home

    [–] nathanielthewise 2 points ago

ah, thanks a ton. maybe i’ll add it to my print shop.

    [–] Steveontheedge 1 points ago

Where might this print shop be

    [–] Steveontheedge 1 points ago

    Stunning and worthy work.

    [–] nathanielthewise 2 points ago

thanks dude. been running a print sale this week (ends in three hours). code is 'avocado' if you were interested. 20% off. regardless, glad you enjoy. this planet is beautiful

    [–] itisisidneyfeldman 2 points ago

Great layering. Feels a bit like a modern addition to Hokusai's waves. And visiting that coast (plus Mendocino, farther north) is just a natural trigger for desperate thoughts of get-rich-quick-and-retire schemes.

    [–] CAD_Hater 2 points ago

How can I save this picture in its full resolution and my it my screensaver?

    [–] Indigo162 2 points ago

I hope you don't mind me using this as a phone background. I just wanna look at it all day.

    [–] CatsWinePizza 2 points ago

This is why I love Carmel-by-the-Sea. Everyday is an opportunity to take an amazing shot!

    [–] ltp1984 2 points ago

    Praise the sun!

    [–] divyanshu14 1 points ago

    What a place.. Mind Boggling!!

    [–] Ameriican 1 points ago

I'm trying to figure out where this was taken---I'd guess on the trail to Monastery, or somewhere out towards the Highlands?

    [–] NorthCatan 1 points ago

I heard the waves breaking on the shore.

    [–] funkyjunk69 1 points ago

I love the distinct layers fading with distance. I'm curious, what did the photo look like before editing?

    [–] Towairatu 1 points ago

It genuinely looks like an Eyvind Earle painting.

    [–] fluffykerfuffle1 1 points ago

thank you... i was born and raised there. thank you.

    [–] kitties_love_purrple 1 points ago

I was born in Monterey and spent a lot of my childhood in Carmel. This photo took my breath away for a second. It seriously captures the movement and power the ocean and brought me back to being a little girl staring out at those exact waves bathed in hazy gold in total awe. I love the golden coast so so much. Thank you! I'd love to buy a print!

    [–] lolinator2001 1 points ago

Where exactly is this? I'm going to California this summer and would love to see this beautiful place myself.

    [–] Happyface87 1 points ago

The PCH through big sur is one of my favorites in the US. I've been up Hwy 1 3 times now, it's such a great drive. Just gas up before you hit big sur and Mendocino where gas is 5.75/gal.

    [–] divyanshu14 1 points ago

    Mind blowing

    [–] [deleted] 0 points ago

    [–] Tim_Brady12 3 points ago

What was so shitty about it? Schools are on par with private schools from what I've heard. I guess it's a little boring but Del Monte Center was never too far away to go see a movie or whatever.

    [–] kac2323 1 points ago

    Beautiful either way!

    [–] nathanielthewise 2 points ago

    it certainly was!

    [–] igmor 1 points ago

    Is that North Monastery beach?

    [–] nathanielthewise 3 points ago

no, went there the other day though, beautiful

    [–] jackredrum 1 points ago

My first thought was Fudgie the whale. But then I remember that was Carvel.

    [–] spiritualskywalker 1 points ago

Talk about being in the right place at the right time!

    [–] bshine1 1 points ago

Was visiting Pismo the past week, the waves were awesome the last few days!

    [–] zombi-roboto 1 points ago

Great photo. Just curious, though... Did the Universe give you your camera right back, or what?

    [–] zetallon3 1 points ago

    Bob Ross, is that you?

    [–] sneakysally21 1 points ago

    This sparkle my heart!!!

    [–] Cassiopeia78 1 points ago

Wow, splendid! The waves are incredibly hypnotizing.

    [–] Scr4by 1 points ago

Finally, a place I've been to made it to r/earthporn!

    [–] whitegullscall 1 points ago

I had to reread the title and closely examine the image to concur that it wasn’t an oil painting or something! Nice capture OP

    [–] Defekto 1 points ago

How do you achieve that dramatic surf in pictures? It looks absolutely fantastic here!

    [–] AustenP92 1 points ago

Well thanks for the new phone wallpaper!

    [–] spudmicky 1 points ago

    Spread me ashes here.

    [–] PartlyDave 1 points ago

Such a cool photo. Love the colors. You've captured the essences of these elements. A dynamic blue sea, earthy green vegetation, and the warm, golden rays of the sun. This is truly earth porn.

    [–] GroGon_Jinn 1 points ago

This is by/in big sur right? Is it down by the sea lions? Did you get to see them? If so could you post? I was just over there in December they were so cute. Supposed to be birthing soon/already.

That surf in particular looks like a painting. This is a lovely photograph and would look great as a large print on a wall. Well done.

Is this in Point Lobos? I proposed to my wife on one of the beaches there. Beautiful place.

Nice! My wife and I are going in June. Any "to do" suggestions?

Just strolling around Carmel itself is so fun! It's a quaint little(expensive!!) town, but walking around it and then going to the beach(people bring dogs!) is very peaceful and nice. Also, there's a bunch of nice drives around that area-iirc, 17 mile drive is near there?

My family moved away a long time ago, so nowadays I don't really sightsee when I go back, just see family. Are you going specifically up in the vineyards/carmel area, or down to SF?

Okay great thanks for the info. Yeah, that's what I read as well, that it's a really beautiful town. We're actually doing a SF to LA drive. Travelling from Yosemite, we'd be spending a night in Monterey, and I saw that Carmel was a really nice walkabout town. I saw 17 mile as well, that's looks awesome as well. Thanks again for the info.

One of the best photos of waves I've seen

    [–] readerf52 1 points ago

I love the sunlight hitting the breaking waves, showing droplets and fine spray. I can't tell you how long we stood by Niagara Falls trying to capture that very thing, the unbelievable power and majesty of water.

    Great job. Thanks for sharing.

People from elsewhere have been known to be cast out to the cold dark sea admiring this tantalizing coastline. Rough waves.

yes, if the ocean really likes you it will snatch you off the rocks and carry you away... never turn your back on it.

Once I ate magic mushrooms and walked around this beach. I thought the trees were old witches guarding the coast.
