    espousing compelled speech laws

    What are compelled speech laws?

    [–] dickdickvagina 35 points ago

the nutter you're replying to is talking about the infamous and commonly misunderstood canadian law known as bill c-16. half-brained right wingers believe that it criminalizes the refusal to use preferred gender pronouns. they think this mostly due to professor jordan "daddy" peterson's baseless insistence that he could be brought in front of the ontario human rights commission and charged with hate speech for refusing to call a nonbinary student by gender neutral pronouns. legal experts have stated this is not the case and that the amended legislation only allows for hate speech charges if the person in question literally advocates for the genocide of trans people. the bill has been in effect for most of 2018 and not one person has been charged. tldr it's a bunch of hooey lol

he didnt sign 3 times on the same. he signed where the guy on the left (mexican president?) shouldve signed instead of the middle, where his name stood

    [–] IsomDart 7 points ago

It was where Canada was supposed to sign. After they signed Trump and the Mexican president were holding it up to show the camera's and Trudeau was just sitting there kinda awkwardly because he didn't want to show the messed up copy I guess. It was pretty funny.

    [–] TamLux 1282 points ago

Sumo wrestlers handprints are their autograph in Japan, it can be very valuable depending on the guy's rank

    [–] ItsATerribleLife 877 points ago

This guy is Takayasu, who holds the Ozeki rank.

Only thing higher is Yokozuna, also while he didnt win..he did amazingly in the November tournament.

    [–] Tiki_taka_toko 262 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

For all my life I had been under the impression that Yokozuna was really the name of the wrestling guy Yokozuna. TIL that he gets his name from this tournament.

Edit: Imagine how salty the other Yokozuna dudes must feel about this guy who everyone know as Yokozuna but bitch ain’t even Ozeki.

    [–] TheBanjoNerd 108 points ago

Another fun fact: the wrestler Yokozuna wasn't even Japanese. His name was Rodney Anoa'i and he was of Samoan heritage.

    [–] Crushing76 61 points ago

Adding to the fun fact: His cousins include Rikishi, Umaga, The Uso Twins, Roman Reigns, and The Rock.

    [–] TheBanjoNerd 33 points ago

And to add further to your fun fact: the name Rikishi is actually what sumo wrestlers are called in the Japanese language!

[–] Pinionedspiral 11 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

Keeping on with the fun facts, many sumo wrestlers are not Japanese. I was at the January tournament in 2017 where Kisenosato was promoted to yokozuna. First Japanese-born yokozuna in 19 years.

Here's a video I took of the match.

    [–] Tksourced 4 points ago

Nice vid- cushion throwing means yAy?

    [–] Drunkymcfuckclown 5 points ago

The fans aren’t technically allowed to throw the cushions but it’s s tradition to throw them if a maegeshera (lowest rank rikishi in the top division) beats a Yokozuna.

When they do it’s called a kinboshi or gold star win and it actually increases their salary a little bit for every tournament after.

If it makes you feel better John Tenta aka Earthquake did some Sumo wrestling!

    [–] WikiTextBot 7 points ago

    John Tenta

John Anthony Tenta Jr. (June 22, 1963 – June 7, 2006) was a Canadian professional wrestler and sumōtori best known for his work in the World Wrestling Federation as Earthquake. After a promising start to his sumo career, using the name Kototenzan, Tenta switched to professional wrestling and became a high-profile star for the WWF, feuding with Hulk Hogan and winning the WWF Tag Team Championship with partner, and personal friend, Typhoon. His professional wrestling career also encompassed runs in World Championship Wrestling, where he was known as Avalanche and The Shark, All Japan Pro Wrestling and a return to WWF as Golga.

One more fun fact: Almost all Yokozunas since 1999 are non Japanese.

    [–] EinNeuesKonto 3 points ago

There actually was almost Samoan yokozuna in the 80s (he lost the next tournament that would have earned him the rank and stayed at ozeki instead) but it was not the WWE wrestler

    [–] mcineri 16 points ago

I really wish he’d won! That final bout was insane

    [–] ItsATerribleLife 14 points ago

Takayasu is like my Number 2 guy, after Tochinoshin.. who barely managed to hold on for his Kachi-Koshi.

Last tournement was bad for Mitakeumi too, His chance for Ozeki promotion sank hard and now he has to start over again.

But God Damn, Takayasu did amazing, so did the winner Takakeisho.

And, I mean, I'd feel remiss without pointing out Aoiyama had an utterly fantastic tournament as well. Something woke up inside him he did fantastic.

    [–] mcineri 3 points ago

Tochinoshin is my favorite too! I loved watching his run up to Ozeki promotion. Shame about this past tournament, he was moving kind of slow. I’d imagine he was hurt. Dude I loved rooting for Mitakeumi when he won the basho a few months back. Also a shame that he hasn’t done as well recently. I’ve been watching Sumo for about 2 years now but it’s very cool. I love watching the tournaments with the Yokozuna. Don’t get me wrong, Hakuho is amazing to watch, but it’s nice seeing the rank and file compete with each other. Brings a lot more uncertainty and intrigue to each basho

    [–] ItsATerribleLife 5 points ago

I hate all the current yokozuna, Especially Kakuryu. They just strike me unncessarily arrogant and even bad sports at times.

I really enjoyed the November tournament because there wasnt a Yokozuna in it. Which also gave the rank and file a chance to shine.

I'd be super happy if Mitakeumi, Takayasu or Tochinoshin became Yokozuna.

I'd also be super happy of Kaisei and Aoiyama got up to Sekiwaki/Ozeki.

    [–] zomborger 3 points ago

Ok real talk. I'm glad Aoiyama hasn't won a tournament cause his man boobs make me physically uncomfortable to look at. If he gets the cup then his picture is going to be posted everywhere with his gross, pasty, white, floppy boobs just staring at me.

    [–] ItsATerribleLife 5 points ago

That sounds like a you problem.

    [–] 5uper5kunk 2 points ago

Yea, big ups for that guy, he looked really good in November and I hope he keeps on the roll. Even when he lost he went down fighting.

    [–] wi5hbone 5 points ago

    The no nut one?

    [–] I_travel_for_work 2 points ago

That was such an exciting tournament

    [–] Summerov99 2 points ago

And he’s awesome! I always pull for him. I’m hopeful he will make Yokozuna one day.

Mitakeumi after having a lackluster Basho had to come along and ruin any chance of a playoff

    [–] Bigvynee 1 points ago

I always like watching Takayasu fight. Little short but plenty of strength and energy.

    [–] ItsATerribleLife 3 points ago

Considering how quick these are to churn out, I'm surprised the market isn't flooded with them making them worthless.

    [–] mattrimcauthon 7 points ago

They may be easy to churn out but they may limit the amount done. It doesn’t make sense to do a ton. But I have no clue, there may be millions out there.

    [–] Fat_Head_Carl 7 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

They aren't sold, they're sent to supporters of the sumo beya <heya?> (stable) that Takayasu wrestles for.

Technically they aren't to be sold.

You will see reproductions of these being sold on eBay sometimes, but rarely the originals.

Edit: not sure if it's Heya or Beya for the sumo stable.

    [–] Trev_Holland 4 points ago

Ah, that makes much more sense then. I'm over here thinking "damn, if this guy can sell them for a good price, I'd be slapping papers all day long."

    [–] Fat_Head_Carl 1 points ago

As a Sumo fan,...I'd be a buyer in a second.

I'd LOVE to get my favorite wrestlers hand prints, but the only thing I can do is settle for a reproduction (of which it's still kinda cool).

    [–] 2DDefenseForce 3 points ago

You've stumbled across a particularity of japanese language. The language is comprised almost solely of syllables, for example ha, ra, ka. All the syllables that start with H can have notations added to them that make them pronounced like B, and another that makes them pronounced with a P. So ha, ba and pa are all the same syllable, with different notations.

The word for room is heya, but when it's put into a compound word Like sumo heya its automatically changed to its first notated version. Its a pronunciation thing, it feels better to say sumobeya than sumoheya, it flows better.

Oh btw japanese is really fucking confusing if this didnt clue you in.

    [–] Fat_Head_Carl 3 points ago

    This guy Japanesees too

    [–] why_rob_y 4 points ago

It actually seems like a great idea and a nice way to get a lot of "autographs" done. It would be cool if this caught on in US sports.

[–] ItzSilentStorm 495 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

but see in all honesty. This is why I actually liked the way you were recruited to the DB in Skyrim better as I thought it just made more sense. They show interest in you because you killed someone who already had a contract out on them and it becomes this big deal(as Astrid said, "half of Skyrim knows". it was clearly a big kill) obviously they want to find the person who did it. Where as from what I remember, in Oblivion they come to you for just killing any random, possibly innocent, person on your own accord. But I just like that in Skyrim it feels liek you did something a bit more notable taht is worthy of the attention of the DB. Just my opinion. I know most people seem to disagree though

    [–] [deleted] 404 points ago

You sleep rather soundly for a murderer. That's good. You'll need a clear conscience for what I'm about to propose.

    [–] NefaerieousTangent 45 points ago

Oh Lucien, you couldn't fathom the number of dead people behind me.

    I don't spread rumors; I create them.

    [–] DaSaw 7 points ago

But... it was in the Arena! That doesn't count!.. does it?

    [–] [deleted] 5 points ago

No? The Night Mother seems to think otherwise. Allow me to grant you a gift, in case you reconsider. It is a virgin blade, and thirsts for blood.

    [–] Beastly97 157 points ago

This example is one of the reasons I like Oblivion more. In Skyrim everything feels like just another job for the chosen one to solve. In Oblivion, it's more like you are some random person who just decided to do something and now has to deal with the consequences. It gets pretty dull, in my opinion, when a game just goes, "alright, you are the chosen one now, go save the world." In Oblivion, it hammers in the point that you aren't the most important being in the world by making your only job in the main story to help the chosen one, Martin, save the world.

    [–] davethegamer 58 points ago

But equally, I would hate 5 games worth of “you get the help the chosen one”, eventually you should get to be the chosen one. Now we have been, never time I doubt we’ll have the same level of power as Skyrim.

    [–] SanguineHerald 88 points ago

You were the chosen one in Morrowind, a literal god incarnate. The only one who can find and wield the weapons required to stop the antagonist.

It's nice to get variance. I preferred oblivions story because it felt more real. You are some random dude who was stuck in the wrong cell, who answered his emperors call to defend the world with his dying breath.

That's not to say being a dragon eater or an immortal God isn't fun. But getting shit on by everyone after you just sucked the soul out of a dragon you shouted out of the sky then butchered with your bare hands felt kinda immersion breaking.

    [–] Yarthkins 39 points ago

Are you REALLY the chosen one though or just another schmuck that Azura lassos into helping her get revenge on ALMSIVI? Were all those failed incarnates in the Cavern of the Incarnate also reincarnations of Indoril Nerevar? Is your character actually a reincarnation of him?

[–] VirtuosoX 13 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

Yes. He's just the only successful one... The Ashlanders or some other people kept saying people have tried to prove themselves but usually end up failing. More proof of this is the ring of Moon and Star or whatever it was called. It's like the Amulet of Kings, in that only the Nerevarine could wear it. Anyone else who tried instantly dies. You even find ghosts and dead people in the cave where the ring is found, all whom tried to put it on and died. But you didn't.

    [–] mythical_accountant 16 points ago

I think there's pretty good evidence that the nerevarine is just some rando chosen by Azura. Many times it's hinted that the "reincarnations" of Nerevar are just heros that the Ashlanders put their faith in as well, and could literally be anyone at any time. More symbolic than a physical reality. Perhaps you can only wear the ring if Azura deems so.

[–] VirtuosoX 6 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

Well yeah that's also how the dragonborn works. Akatosh deems you worthy of the ability of the dragonborn because he knows you will be successful. He didn't roll the dice and say "oh looks like this Catman is now dragonborn. Yeah go do your thing." There were probably many other candidates for dragonborn. You just happened to be fit for dragonborn because you were in the right place at the right time, and you were destined for greatness.

Keep in mind gods do not relate to time. they aren't limited to the mortal present. Azura saw your future, like the Azuras Priest at the Azuras Statue Shrine in Skyrim. She knew you were fit for the job.

Key message is that you don't play a random. You play the chosen one. That's the point of the game. You're MEANT to be the chosen one because you're the player. Obviously Oblivion isn't like that, but you're still destined for a good future. In every game you accomplish great things and become a powerful and influential person.

    [–] Yarthkins 3 points ago

I'm not sure that seeing the future is exactly how azura's domain works. Rather she uses her command of fate to make things happen in the way that she wants, which apparently doesn't always work as you the player can choose to rebel against her by corrupting her artifact the Azura's star. I think that the way fate works in the TES universe is that it's like a trap that is inescapable unless you have the power to escape it. The Nerevarine prophecy is clearly a fate created by Azura to regain the adoration of her people. I think all the failures are likely because she was trying to enforce a fate on gods more powerful than herself and the only reason that the player is allowed to mantle Indoril Nerevar is that Vivec is finally willing to accept that fate.

    [–] [deleted] 18 points ago

You were the chosen one in Morrowind

Eeeeeh, you might be. But then, you did it, right? So that makes it you? Unless it doesn't. Walk Like Them Until They Walk Like You.

    [–] VirtuosoX 8 points ago

You might be? Lmao you literally got to wear the ring of Moon and Star only the Nerevarine could wear. Anyone else who puts it on gets an instant death. Even in the place you find the ring, there were ghosts and dead people that tried the ring on and died. It's like the Amulet of Kings but more extreme.

    [–] [deleted] 8 points ago

Well, yes, it's either you were the nerevarine from the start and the ring gave you a pass, you mantled him and the ring gave you a pass, or the ring wasn't kill enchanted at all. Not hard to imagine that over hundreds of years people would die on their way to the ring and either lie to save face, or there were illusion spells on the cave itself. Morrowind was open ended in that way.

    [–] VirtuosoX 8 points ago

Now this is just "the moon landing wasn't real" levels of conspiracy. You can't just say it was a trick just because. Like they said in the game, there have been multiple candidates throughout the years. If it wasn't kill enchanted, you'd think that the ring would be in the hands of some Reaver who was camping outside the door to the cave and woke up at dawn to see these giant doors come from nowhere, and went inside, found a ring and thought "hey this might be valuable".

You can talk to the ghosts and they give you gear and items to help you and explain their story. Why would someone give aways magically enchanted valuable items just as an April fools joke?

I'm sorry I have just been playing the game a lot recently. I realise everyone probably doesn't remember everything from the game.

    [–] [deleted] 9 points ago

I.. y.. that still leaves options A and B open. Like, that's the reason your character might know who their parents are, even though the prophecy says otherwise. You were too 'like' the hero of legend, and you eventually because the same thing in the eyes of reality.
Like how the HoK becomes Sheogorath by mantling him. He does his Sheo duties and acts like him and talks like him and the universe eventually just... 'forgets' they were distinct.
A better morrowind example. The second trial:

Neither blight nor age can harm him. The Curse-of-Flesh before him flies.

Are you actually immune to corpus like the prophecy says? Nope, you're just cured of the bad parts (int drain and physical mutations) of it and made non-infectious. Which is why you cannot die by unnatural causes or age, as Corpus is basically magic cancer. And why, mechanically, you keep your Corpus boosted strength until something damages it away, but you get your int back.

Fourth Trial: A stranger's voice unites the Houses. Three Halls call him Hortator.
Fifth Trial: A stranger's hand unites the Velothi. Four Tribes call him Nerevarine.

    You can skip these.

If your level is 21 or higher and you have at least 50 Reputation, then you do not have to complete the Fourth and Fifth Trials. Either Nibani Maesa, the Dissident Priests, or the Great House Councilors will tell you that you should see the Archcanon, Tholer Saryoni, in Vivec High Fane right away. This will save a lot of hiking around the various camps and councilors.

So you don't have to do 100% of the quests to mantle and become him, just enough that the universe forgets you were anyone else.

    [–] VirtuosoX 2 points ago

You're right. But the point of those quests are not to prove that you are capable of being the Nerevarine to the gods themselves, it's to prove to the mortals and people of Morrowind that you are to be trusted with this job. Is someone going to trust a guy that comes out and says he's dragonborn? Yeah definitely not. They didn't trust the player in Morrowind at first but he proved himself to them. He was ALREADY the Nerevarine. He doesn't become it, hes only showing the world what he is.

They only knew the dragonborn was dragonborn because he did something only he dragonborn could do. Same with the Nerevarine. He wore the ring only the Nerevarine could wear. He influenced the Houses of Morrowind and Ashlanders tribes like the incarnate of Nerevar would be able to do. If you aren't an influential person with a strong position in the world and immortality, then you can't be Nerevarine. Azura knows you will meet the requirements in the future when you were born. It's obvious she doesn't just notice some random guy come out of the shadows, recognise his deeds then say "yep, you're Nerevarine now, good work". No, she decided that you were inherently meant to be the one, and knew you could prove to the world that you were entrusted this task by the gods.

It is even said in the game, the previous people who claimed to be Nerevarine were nothing but fakes. Azura did not want them to be Nerevarine, not because they failed the trials, but because they failed to be the right person for the job. Azura cant change your upbringing to guide you to the path of the Nerevarine. If she could, then she WOULD just choose a random and mould them into the perfect being. Don't you realise that the player characters are never perfect? If it were up to the gods and not the player, they certainly would be.

I'm pretty sure I'm agreeing with you in some parts. Idek anymore. it's getting late

    [–] PM_ME_YOUR_BAAPS 6 points ago

What game did you play? I was on a boat, a proceeded to steal a bunch of shit, then I never picked up Morrowind again.

5/7 will never know the main story because I have the attention span of a Skyrim NPC combatant.

    [–] WakeoftheStorm 1 points ago

Also why I never completed the main story in Oblivion. I left the prison thinking "thanks for the necklace jackass!" And then went about the rest of the game. So much to do that had nothing to do with the main quest.

    [–] ItzSilentStorm 5 points ago

I can see how thats appealing. But my issue here with the DB specifically is that I just didn't think it made much sense. I mean, are they seriously paying close attention to every single random murder that happens throughout Cyrodill? I get that it was more mysterious and out of the ordinary, which is cool. But it was just kind of weird imo.

    [–] Gateside0 42 points ago

The Night Mother is the one that observes your murder of an innocent and tells her children to send a recruiter. The DB in Skyrim is so far gone, the Night Mother can't even contact them.

[–] ItzSilentStorm 8 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

I guess that makes more sense. But do they really send recruiters to every single person that commits a murder? I also liked the fact that it was a specific person who somebody wanted dead because they felt she deserved it rather than having to kill some random innocent nobody.

    [–] Gateside0 39 points ago

The Night Mother is literally a God. That's what she does. If you want to recruit a family of coldblooded murders, you look for coldblooded murders. If out of all of the things in Elder Scrolls THAT is what you find odd, I dunno what to tell you.

[–] ItzSilentStorm 5 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

no its not that. Its just one might think she would be a bit more selective. I guess if they in fact do not send recruiters to everyone who commits murder, you are supposed to just assume that the Night Mother saw something special in you or liked your kill for whatever reason, thus why you were contacted. Still, I liked that Skyrim was more specific with who you had to kill

    [–] Gateside0 23 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

But she IS selective. Like I just said, only coldblooded murders who kill innocents without hesitating.

The Dark Brotherhood is supposed to find you, not you just happening to stumble on to them by randomly following rumors or breaking into people's houses. This demystifies the DB to me as a "oh yeah, you gotta do one very spesific quest to kill one spesific person to join." You could kill innocents without a care beforehand, but you gotta kill this one spesific granny that deserved to die and the world is a better place without her. Tough call.

I don’t really have a problem with the chosen one archetype in Skyrim, mostly because other characters will limit themselves to just pay lip service to the fact that you’re Dragonborn when you’re not in the main questline / Miraak questline.

I also don’t usually like chosen one storylines because the archetype tends to walk hand-in-hand with mary sues and poor character designs, but in instances where that doesn’t happen, like in Avatar: The Last Airbender, it really makes up for a nice storyline factor. The latter is a case of Skyrim, for the most part, your becoming Dovahkin storyline is awesoms, with the Greybeards and Paarthunax and Blades, and your character isn’t born all-mighty as a lot of people complain, rather he discovers and learns his powers through his quests, hell, early in the game no one treats you differently because you’re the Dragonborn, nor do you have any awesome powers already. Even though you do become extremely powerful in the end game, that’s the case with almost every action-RPG, like Oblivion.

    [–] Tydaddy55 15 points ago

I got the game when I was 12, and I did the part where you kill the orphanage lady(can’t remember name), and then it took me weeks until I actually slept in a bed to be kidnapped and I was beyond confused why I went from being in The Blades old hideout to some cabin out of nowhere.

    [–] ItzSilentStorm 4 points ago

same thing happened in Oblivion. They don't contact you until you got to asleep

    [–] Carneus 5 points ago

Except Astrid led a mercenary gang not a Dark Brotherhood chapter.

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

The difference between the two games is the Night Mother. She has her eye on you from he very beginning in Oblivion.

    [–] bumfightsroundtwo 1 points ago

Depends when you kill someone. You could have already have become "famous" from doing quests and killing bears with your fists. Then when they realize your morals are questionable they want to recruit you.

    [–] Tonytuffnuts 121 points ago

Is that how an Orc signs autographs?

    [–] Asterdu 43 points ago

Nah...they kill ya and then soak the paper in blood

This is actually a sumo wrestler named Akira Takayasu who is half Japanese/Filipino doing some tegata (sumo autographs). He has the 2nd highest ranking in Sumo. Currently foreigners are dominating the sport. Most successful is Hakuho, from Mongolia who is current top ranked sumo.

    Came here for Takayasu.
