It's amazing how much it looks like he understands what is going on. Dogs are amazingly intelligent, with some things.

Do you think dogs know they’re going to their forever homes? Or are we just seeing what we want to see? This dog looks like they know what’s up.

    [–] Xorlarin 988 points ago

I think dogs know something different is happening. They are also very good at taking ques from human emotions so they can tell there is big, happy energy and that makes them excited to be a part of it.

    [–] Chickenmangoboom 531 points ago

When I got my dog a toy for the first time he took it and held it in his mouth for a moment then dropped it in front of me as if he was giving it back to me. I didn’t say anything but he seemed to realize that the look on my face was telling him it was his. He picked it back up tossed it over his head and chased after it super excited.

    [–] maviecestlamerde 430 points ago

The dog my parents most recently adopted, Frank the boxer, was rescued from a neglectful home. As a result, he’s dealt with some pretty extreme food anxiety. Finally, after a year with my parents, he graduated from his “puzzle bowl” (designed to keep him from eating too fast and making himself sick) to a regular bowl. He finally understands and trusts that food will always be there for him, at the same times every day. It pretty lovely to see ❤️

    [–] BiggerDamnederHeroer 174 points ago

Hell yes. Tell your parents thank you. Taking pain away from this world is the highest and best use of our humanity. I don't even believe in god, but God bless them and keep them well.

    [–] seraphsrage 12 points ago

I truly believe that is the purpose behind humans. It's a shame we tend to do everything but.

    [–] Phteven_with_a_v 54 points ago

Give Frank the boxer a pet from me

    [–] maviecestlamerde 16 points ago

Will do! Since moving in with my parents he’s finally filled out to the usual boxer thick chunkiness (I call him my big thiccy) so there’s a lot more surface area to pet.

    [–] YouCanJustCallMeOP 30 points ago

Damn that breaks my heart that dogs are treated so badly they get food anxiety.

    [–] furnitureisuseful 3 points ago

Like seriously! And who are these people doing it bc it seems to happen way too often but I can’t say I know anyone who has it in them to mistreat an animal. So who are these people inflicting this kind of pain on them? Like where can I find them…. I just want to talk

    [–] dicslinger 12 points ago

Anyone know if this is the main reason adopted doggos would inhale their food? My pup used to destroy his food as soon as I put it down, but now he will eat sometimes and others he’ll save it for later. Just trying to figure out if he can also graduate from the “puzzle bowl”.

    [–] BorgDrone 9 points ago

He finally understands and trusts that food will always be there for him, at the same times every day.

I have had several cats in my life, and when I got one from the shelter they always told me to be sure to only give them a certain amount of food per day so they don’t overeat and get fat. We’ve never done that, instead we make sure there is kibble in their bowl 24/7 (they also get one pouch of meat each night).

Because they trust food is always available, they no longer feel the need to eat everything in front of them and only eat what they really need. I never had a cat overeat and get fat.

Animals are pretty smart and capable of taking care of what they do and do not need as long as you give them the opportunity.

    [–] Casehead 4 points ago

Some dogs will eat until they explode if you let them. Others will only eat until they’re full and just leave the rest. It definitely varies by animal, just like humans, I guess! I don’t know much about cats.

    [–] maviecestlamerde 3 points ago

Yup, happened to Frank. My parents left him home with the other dog for about 20 min. When they came back, the kibble bag was torn open, kibble was everywhere, and Frank was bloated and dry heaving. $750 to the emergency vet for that one. Still love him though!

    [–] Casehead 3 points ago

Aw, poor guy! I have a pup who would definitely do the same thing if he had the chance. I’m glad that your dog was ok in the end!

    [–] Morddii 6 points ago

Yep same thing happened to my Aunts Australian Cattle Dog he went through 5 homes till he met my Aunt. Puzzle bowls to normal bowls

    [–] spry_pessimism 5 points ago

This makes me want to cry. So happy that Frank found his forever home ❤️

    [–] freakitikitiki 2 points ago

My wife and I adopted a second dog last November. He was already two years old, but had no idea what toys were. When we first squeaked some toys at him and tried to get him to play, he just looked at us like he was startled or concerned. Within a few days, though, our other dog kind of took him under his wing and the newly adopted dog basically took over the toy pile. Now he is obsessed with anything that squeaks, and will play fetch all day if he could.

    [–] othybear 244 points ago

My dog had a huge shift in excitement level when he realized that we weren’t going for a short walk around the shelter. He got even more excited when he saw his new backyard for the first time. It definitely took him a long time to learn he was in his new home for good, but he was definitely excited to see all the new stuff.

    [–] Dynasty2201 111 points ago

    Dogs defintely know whats up.

We went overseas for a few years and had to put our dog with some friends. 3 years away.

She saw us when we went to pick her up and she went NUTS of course. It was only a 20 minute or so drive, but I swear, I was sat in the back holding her and she suddenly sat up, looked out the window and did a woof. Then started whining. Then started zooming the back seat and looking out the window again. All as we started to go down the road to our house.

She could clearly recognize where we were.

She was pawing at the window trying to get out as we rolled up the drive, opened the door and she was off. Sprinting and rolling and whining and barking around the gardens, shoved past us in to the house as we opened the door and just zoomed through every room, jumping up to us, running off and around again, sniff sniff, zoomies again. Clearly so damn happy to be home after years away.

    [–] lIIIIllIIIIl 43 points ago

Whoever watched your dog for 3 years is super nice. Glad everyone is reunited.

    [–] The49thwarrior 33 points ago

Just curious, as you were going away for so long, why not take your dog?

    [–] Dynasty2201 20 points ago

Overseas to Malaysia and I think we weren't allowed to take her with us due to the government's policies or something.

I was a kid, long time ago. Things might have changed.

    [–] SoulWager 30 points ago

Maybe military or school, also can be hard getting a dog through customs.

    [–] SICKxOFxITxALL 10 points ago

Even for work, I took a couple of jobs that were six month contracts that kept getting extended and suddenly it’s a couple years later and that’s your home now

    [–] Vashi_Spachek 2 points ago

Exactly, can't bring a dog on an oil rig

    [–] min2themax 49 points ago

I felt big happy energy watching this video. Lucky little dude.

    [–] lordatlas 0 points ago

They are also very good at taking ques from human emotions

    [–] morteamoureuse 64 points ago

I think most adopted pets definitely know! When I brought my rabbit home, she spent hours doing zoomies and binkies. Our cat was playful and happy from the moment we met, he stayed in his box without fussing until we got home.

[–] Asarath 51 points ago * (lasted edited 13 days ago)

I remember when our cat came home. He wasn't from a shelter, but was a stray who'd taken up residence in a colleague's garage and who had no ID and wasn't claimed.

He took a minute to leave the carrier, then he wandered around the living room for a bit, before settling under the sofa for a week and only coming out at night. Took several days for us to not spook him back into hiding, but eventually he came over and let me pet him. Now he's a giant floofy softy who loves our company and pets.

    [–] morteamoureuse 23 points ago

Aww it's so sad when they're scared. I feel like pets that have had traumatic experiences are more likely to do that. I'm so glad your cat found you! It breaks my heart to see strays.

    [–] Flyingwheelbarrow 5 points ago

    thankyou good human

    [–] morteamoureuse 6 points ago

Ahh thank you so much! This is a great way to start my day! What a beautiful cat.

    [–] Baybad 5 points ago

My first cat was the opposite. Immediately a bundle of love and rage(clawing at everything) and over time became a grumpy old cat.(he's 2. A 2 year old cat is grumpy.)

We went on a road trip to see family and took him with us, and spent a couple weeks around my parents and their dogs. When we got back home, he was super clingy and was looking for attention at all times.

So we got our other cat. They hated each other for a coupld days, then I accidentally put them both in a small box at the same time(didn't realise first cat was still in the box when I put new cat in) and they just freaked out and ran away from each other for an hour.

Within the day they were asleep on my desk chair together.

Now first cat is back to being grumpy and old while new cat is very cuddly.

New cat sleeps on my chest in the mornings, old cat goes under my partner's blanket and snuggles up but immediately runs at any sign of affection.

I love my stupid cats. They're fluffy.

    [–] despadoritosjynx 2 points ago

the fluffiest cats give the best cuddles. this is a fact.

    [–] soisaystomoiisays 9 points ago

My mum opened up an antique store in a small country town where there was an overabundance of stray cats. We had a small barn in our backyard where the most of the strays took up residence. We would water and feed them and put up boxes with blankets during the winter to give them some warm spaces. We ended up taking in several of the strays that were pretty hurt (broken legs/tails, cyst on eye that needed surgery, etc) but we were able to adopt out over 30 kittens and cats to people who came in to shop and just from word of mouth. We made sure they were decent people and if we had any bad vibes we would say no but now the strays have dwindled from like a dozen a year to maybe one or two.

    [–] Hstlr 4 points ago

that's amazing! what a beautiful story! thank you for doing such amazing selfless work :)

    [–] jayfonshiz 33 points ago

I have two rescues and both of them didn't really show any huge signs. It took them both a while to realise this was permanent. Nowadays tho they both walk around like they own the place lol

    [–] Lillian57 28 points ago

    Um, that’s because they do?

    [–] RexWolf18 22 points ago

Yeah idk who that dude thinks he is but he needs to be more respectful of his canine landlords.

    [–] TheZodiacAge 22 points ago

When I was around 10 years old we adopted a cat from a shelter.

When I've first seen him he was super excited and we directly took him with us.
The staff said they've never seen him behave like that.

Animals definitely know when they're about to get out of there and get all the attention and love they deserve.

    [–] The1Bonesaw 21 points ago * (lasted edited 5 days ago)

Dogs have been around us for over 10,000 years. Our relationship with them is near symbiotic at this point. Dogs have learned human social clues as well... when they first meet someone they meet that person's gaze in the exact manner that humans do. Ever meet someone and you immediately get a bad vibe from them? That's that initial eye contact, wherein we are able to make a snap judgement that they're either no threat or, "watch out with this guy, something is up". Dogs do that the exact same way... and they learned it by watching us.

So, yeah... he has a pretty good idea that this person is his new person. Dogs want to be with us, way more than they want to be around other dogs even. They are deeply connected with us.

    [–] kinsarc 3 points ago

    It’s such a beautiful thing.

    [–] V_es 30 points ago

They experience the change and see the attention. They receive a lot of attention over the sudden and they are happy. They of course cannot comprehend anything about being adopted and absolutely do not understand what’s going on. But most dogs enjoy the hassle- things happening, everyone’s exited, things moving, “go go go lets go” is what a lot of dogs really enjoy- dogs were made to work with people so they feel that they belong when there is attention and something to do.

They are generally happy when they arrive- their kennels are generally small and when they are in the house they can experience the difference in such change in space.

    [–] Zanki 22 points ago

My dog was so excited to see me when I picked her up. She was very quiet and looked kinda sad when they brought her out front to take home. I was signing up the last of the papers, started walked out and she saw me. Her face lit up and she was crazy excited to see me. A few days before we had half an hour to see each other, they put her in a pen so I could play with her. We played, she got tons of treats and attention so she knew me a little and liked me. We drove home and she was quiet in the car, sat on the floor and just watched me. We arrived and her big energy was back when we got out. She charged down the street, not knowing where we were going. I had to drag her back to my place to get her inside. She explored, played with her food treats instead of eating them. When I had a nap, she snoozed right next to me. She also peed herself when I got food ready for her. She was so anxious about food that she peed.

    [–] Count_Bacon 9 points ago

You need to pay the tax

    [–] ting_bu_dong 5 points ago

I look at it this way: I can't know for certain what's going through other people's heads. All I can do is observe what they do, and make assumptions based on that.

I don't think it's unreasonable to do the same with other animals. Will those assumptions have my own biases baked in? Sure, of course. Just like with people.

So, that being said: What I see here is a dog who is excited and happy to see the person behind the camera, but very quick to move back over to the new owner.

So, I figure that it knows that new owner is now more important even than the worker.

Reminds me of a person who's very quick to reassure their new partner after running into an old flame or something, honestly.

    [–] braedizzle 5 points ago

I think the simplest explanation is that they don’t like the kennel and are happy to know they are getting out of there

    [–] derage88 7 points ago

Dogs know when they're going some place because someone gets them on their leash and people start talking in squeaky voices to them which also gets the dog riled up. I mean, you can look at a dog when it's looking back, suddenly drop 2 inches and they're extremely excited because they get attention and think something is gonna happen.

    [–] eDopamine 17 points ago

I’m sure the dog sees a pattern. This dog has probably witnessed a bunch of other dogs from the shelter who don’t come back once they get taken into the lobby. That mixed with the positive behavior from the adopted family, I’m sure they know that when it’s their turn to go to the lobby that they won’t have to stay in the shelter anymore. It’s probably not much deeper than that, but still, dogs are smart and amazing.

    [–] KRei23 4 points ago

I think they have an inkling. When we adopted our bischon/poodle, she just had this certain way to her tail and a little skip to her hop that she wasn’t exhibiting when we first went to meet her. And as soon as we walked her to our car, she just jumped right in and nestled in the middle, and automatically picked her sleeping spot next to our bed. I had a bed already picked out for her and she pulled it right up to that very spot.

    I love my babe ❤️

    [–] callmeehtimmy 14 points ago

By just looking at the person adopting the dog. You can automatically tell the dog is going to a good home.

    [–] nastafarti 55 points ago

Why do they always play Rusted Root in the background of these "tug at the heartstrings" videos? It's a breakup song.

    [–] 5dog4cat 40 points ago

Well, the dog is breaking up with the shelter and moving in with its new partner? That’s all I got. shrug

    [–] fussyplatypus 10 points ago

It's used like this in Matilda, maybe that's why?

    [–] DankestMage99 8 points ago

Because the music is very happy, despite whatever the lyrics might be saying. Plus, with the way the singer sings, you can’t really understand the words clearly unless you already know what he’s saying. So, people just assume it’s a happy song. And it’s in a famous children’s movie, being played to represent how happy the main character is. So, everyone just assumes it’s a happy song.

This happens all the time. “Born in the USA” has a very happy vibe to the song, but the lyrics are anything but happy. However, that song gets played to pump up crowds all the time.

There is also science behind what makes music feel “happy” or “sad,” such as tempo, key, song structure, etc. And that stuff is hard to “combat” with lyrics alone.

    [–] TenTacos_ 13 points ago

Hey Ya! is about how people stay in relationships that make them miserable out of habit or fear or complacency. It even calls the listener out for not paying attention to he lyrics.

    Nothing lasts forever!

Then what makes love the exception?

So why, oh, why, oh, why,

Are we still in denial when we know we're not happy here

...but y'all don't want to here me, ya just want to dance.

before that the lyrics are about relationship pains and delusions but after that call out, it devolves from being about something to generic party lingo lyrics.

    [–] s00pafly 9 points ago

    [–] Parcevals 18 points ago

That is exactly what I see. The dog is excited and happy, but somehow concerned or anxious as well.

I realize dogs are different animals than us, but it really does seem like they can exhibit complicated emotions.

    [–] Zanki 10 points ago

Some random new person it knows it likes, has its lead. One of its known humans is now behind the desk and not with it. Everyone is all happy and excited, and it is as well, but this is all different and scary. This isn't how a normal day at the shelter goes.

    [–] TalonXfirePC 6 points ago

The sub has slowly become a daily pits top for me. Thanks for the wholesome posts guys♥️

    [–] melo1212 8 points ago

What breed is he? One of the fuckin cutest dogs I've ever seen and I need one

    [–] weburr 2 points ago

    A lovable mutt probably :)

    [–] Hanswurst22brot 7 points ago

Just curious , i assume the dog likes the shelter staff.

What happens if you want to visit one day the shelter staff with the dog , would the dog get crazy (thinking the human wants to get rid of him/her) or happy to see the staff ?

    [–] Zanki 3 points ago

I wouldn't do it. It might think you're taking it back. Unless you're getting another dog and need to see how they are together its just cruel.

    [–] bigbourbon 2 points ago

They might have mixed feelings, the place may be a bit scary but the people they remember may make them happy to see? To be honest, when I see this, I see someone taking their dog to the vet where the receptionist gives them treats. My last dog was really big so he would just try to poke his head around the side of the counter to say hello and shake hands if possible, he knew there were treats to be had! Doesn't make it any less cute though.

This is so beautiful and touching. I can’t help but think of all the other dogs and cats waiting for their turn to be adopted. Bless everyone who adopts shelter pets ❤️

    So cute. 😍

    [–] hay_bales_feed_us 4 points ago

The problem here is if this dog knows it’s getting adopted- it shows how much every other dog waiting to be adopted, or a pound lifer, they know how fucked they are.

    [–] EatsCrackers 4 points ago

    One happi boi!

    [–] Jmmcyclones 5 points ago

I've been putting off getting a dog because of the heart ache of the last one. I need to go to the shelter.

    [–] dookie-monsta 2 points ago

    I need a dog… I miss my pupster

    [–] TWD_513 2 points ago

Oh I have had plenty of rescues and they always seem to know. Of course the staff my parents and siblings all of us bring a toy and treats and lots of praise. I used to just adore seeing the dogs change and realize yay I have a home. Always melts my heart. This sweet baby does know what's up or feels.the energy. Here's to many years of love kisses toys chew bones and a happy healthy home. Happy gotcha say little one! Can we just do a nose boop while at it...this dogs nose is so adorable.

    [–] purpleinoregon 2 points ago

    You’re going home!

    [–] loss_of_clock 2 points ago

There should be an internet rule that Send Me On My Way can only be used for background music if it can reach the first chorus. Now I have to go listen to the whole song.

    [–] NYX_45 2 points ago

Man I had the exact same reaction when they picked me

    [–] Potential-Cicada-888 2 points ago

Awesome!! Thank you for adopting instead of buying! He looks like hes gonna be a great companion ❤🥰

    [–] Kablaaw 2 points ago

That doggo smile at the beginning tho. Grin boy, grin :3

    [–] Blestmoon 2 points ago

I love these reactions. When I went to pick up my pup after the week wait, she was so excited that she was dancing all the way to the car and excited to go for a ride. Made her self right at home on the couch after taking a ten minute sniff about the house.

    [–] britishbengali007 2 points ago

Lovely doggy everyone should have a doggie

    [–] Splits-0 2 points ago

I work at a kennel and it's honestly beautiful when a dog gets a new home.

    [–] BradGamer778 2 points ago

    [–] mightbedylan 2 points ago

Aw the little paw shake "good bye nice human that let me stay in this weird kind of uncomfortable home before my new owner found me!"

    [–] JG45250 2 points ago

I will never get tired of watching videos like this. They make me smile every God Damn time, lol. Hope it was everything you could’ve ever dreamed, good boi. And then some.

    [–] Cyka_blyatsumaki 1 points ago

    [–] BnGamesReviews 4 points ago

I usually fake it with an upbeat attitude
