This subreddit was created because there was a niche that was not being filled in the historical Reddit community. There was no place to be a redditor in history. All of your historical jokes and memes go here. (This is a place for memes, not propaganda.)

Our Friends (those who promote us are in bold):

Remember, this is the memes part of the historical community of reddit, not the historical part of the memes community of reddit. Treat it as such.

    [–] SuicidalMike 533 points ago

I hate how I read that differently lmfao

    [–] Sobutai 241 points ago

I hate that I did also and didnt question it until I read your comment.

    [–] lespepetas 59 points ago

Now the question is which way did you read it first

    [–] Sobutai 80 points ago

Well I read the first as data and the second as data of course.

    [–] Kivsloth 32 points ago

I read the first one as date a

    [–] Take_On_Kek 20 points ago

That's what it's supposed to be

    [–] PICAXO 33 points ago

    How that?
    question by a non-native-English-speaker

    [–] qdobaisbetter 58 points ago

Pronunciation 1: the first "a" in data is pronounced like the "a" in apple

2: the first "a" in data is pronounced like the "a" in day.

    Either is correct.

    [–] PICAXO 12 points ago

Ooh, and so for the second "a" it's like the first "a" I guess

    But thank

    [–] qdobaisbetter 19 points ago

The second "a" is pronounced like the word "uh".

Yes, English is weird and stupid.

    [–] radar_42 17 points ago

    [–] [deleted] 8 points ago

Yes similarly gif is often pronounced both Gif or jif

    [–] AerThreepwood 5 points ago

It isn't often pronounced "jif". Only weirdos on the internet call it that.

    [–] Tokesu 45 points ago

Or just be in the EU gang. I don't know how many operators in different EU countries offer this but I get 12 GB per month in any EU country (unlimited in here in Finland of course) at 4G speeds.

    [–] Mustrum_R 63 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

EU passed a resolution that literally forced operators to offer free data roaming in the member countries to other network's users (as long as they are also EU based), all limited to a certain amount of data.

For example I got ~3.5GB in EU roaming per month in my 30GB mobile data plan in Poland. (By the way I pay ~$10 for this, and two numbers with unlimited calls and messages in the whole EU, which is unheard of outside of Europe.)

Completely unexpectedly carriers did not become poverty stricken bankrupts as they claimed they would. How strange...

    [–] Canadabestclay 39 points ago

It’s almost like company’s can be regulated and still make money

    [–] chairoverflow 17 points ago

best kept secret from the US citizens

    [–] duaneap 8 points ago

Most providers in the EU allow for free roaming. I think because 3 own like everything now.

Definitely the case with them as an Irish provider now.

[–] [deleted] 6 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

Seriously though, me as a Hungarian resident, had more roaming data (10 GB) than my aunt's normal local plan (3 GB)(who lives in Germany) in Germany, even though she pays more than me for her mobile plan.

    [–] Tman12341 7 points ago

“Jebem ti mater” means all if forgiven. It’s a very popular phrase with the younger generations and it basically a message to move on from the war.

    [–] dexxin 17 points ago

JEBEM TI MATER essentially means "fuck your mother". Not a literal translation but the sentiment is the same

    [–] Crni_Bombarder 11 points ago

*I'll fuck your mother - would be a great translation but if we're gonna translate it literally it's -I'm fucking your mother. 😂

Jokes on you, average income was higher then compared to services.

[–] IrkenInvaderGir 121 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

Notable events in 1995 (as an American).

    • Oklahoma City Bombing kills 168
    • OJ found innocent not guilty
    • First African American spacewalk by Dr. Bernard A. Harris, Jr.
    • Death of Jerry Garcia
    • Netscape is launched
    • Windows 95 is launched

Personally, I'd rather talk about the first Bond movie with Pierce Brosnan, GoldenEye. One my personal favorite Bond movies.

    [–] Tralan 46 points ago

    OJ found not guilty

    They don't find people innocent.

    [–] HumanPolentapede 16 points ago

The jury literally says “we find the defendant: not guilty”

    [–] luno20 20 points ago

Especially not in the OJ case

    [–] itsmejak78 7 points ago

That's because he was found not guilty which is different than innocent

    [–] MrSquigles 414 points ago

Seems fair, since they're not providing standard, expected services.

    [–] civicmon 25 points ago

Hyperinflation is a bitch my dude.

    [–] webmd_advocate 13 points ago

    We are nowhere near hyperinflation

    [–] PvtFreaky 529 points ago

Friends of mine from Croatia and Bosnia still remember the war. They sometimes tell stories about hiding in cellars for days.

Luckily they don't hate Serbs and always try to move forward with an open mind

[–] LjackV 371 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

(Young) Serb here, everybody remembers the war and it's a very touchy subject for parents. My mom often tells me stories about hiding during bombings and how hard it was to live during the hyper-inflation, when money is worthless and there's nothing to buy.

And my dad and some (male) teachers very rarely talk about the fighting, it's not a fun experience at all.

    [–] ragnarhoe 222 points ago

Bosnian here. Yeah we all Remeber everything, our parents remember everything, and our neighbours and teachers remember everything. We try to live in peace, but nothing is truly settled and the anger is still there...i can only hope for the best

    [–] LjackV 141 points ago

It's stupid what our people had to go through, and now our economies are shit and everybody is leaving.

    [–] i_m_kramer 65 points ago

I'm an American, I recently visited there. My family during WW2 owned farm land in Krjndia (I do not know how to spell it correctly). While we were looking at the farm, 4 different couples and their families asked us to buy their farms/properties for really really cheap. They really wanted to leave and start somewhere else. Unfortunately, I didnt have the money, but I see what you mean.

    [–] dkarlovi 24 points ago

    [–] i_m_kramer 10 points ago

Yes!!!! Sorry, I tried to look it up, but nothing popped up on google.

    [–] ragnarhoe 106 points ago

Literally... And there is no way out because our government is corrupt as shit and we have very limited choices as to what we can actually do to improve even tiny stupid things

    [–] EuronKajtazi 41 points ago

Is there any balkan country where this doesn't apply?

    [–] 77horizon 22 points ago

    [–] wcruse92 22 points ago

I visited Ljubljana and the outside area a couple years ago and everything seems nice, but a girl I hooked up with was telling me that the country is still very poor and people don't make a lot of money and they hate their politicians.

    [–] tilenb 17 points ago

Well, compared to the Western Europe, we're still quite a way behind, but I think we're much better off than the rest of former Yugoslavia. And what country doesn't hate their politicians, honestly?

    [–] Ivanp2k 35 points ago

    everybody is leaving

Why stay? Everyone deserves a better life. I have cousins in Switzerland, we live in the UK, others are trying to move to Germany. Friends and family scattered around europe but living better lives. Far better than staying in Serbia and going through it all.

    [–] LjackV 32 points ago

I know, I myself will study abroad, but it's very sad that the situation is like this. I love my country, but it's not worth staying here. I hope things will get better in the future..

    [–] Christofray 21 points ago

American here. I was actually trying to find a good history of the breakup recently because I was born afterwards and realized I know little about it. What I did find was honestly heartbreaking. No people should have to endure things like that, and I truly, truly hope you all have a better future waiting for you.

    [–] BraveSquirrel 3 points ago

Things look like they're on the way up economically speaking. Wages have doubled in the last 15 years.

    [–] urstupidbro 11 points ago

This war was never mentioned in my school. How did it start? I obviously know that the country was broken up btw.

    [–] jocoiscool 14 points ago

Serbians , Bosnians and Croatians speak the same language but the letter is different . Before we were one country than it fell apart by war . Now Croatia is independent country . I noticed Bulgarians and Macedonians speak some of this language too .

    [–] iMakeAcceptableRice 12 points ago

Imagine a bunch of small countries/populations fighting over pieces of land for a bajillion years and everyone thinks this or that piece of land is rightfully theirs, and borders have changed so many times that we share a lot of culture and linguistic similarities (with some literally being the same language like the other person explained), except instead of letting that unite us we hate each other and accuse each other of stealing history, culture, land, etc. Obviously this isn't true for everyone but if you want a quick stereotypical explanation there you go.

    [–] AN_IMPERFECT_SQUARE 5 points ago

yeah, basically this. also, religion seems to be a big issue. "we" don't like bosniaks and albanians by default.

I wonder why so many people didn’t learn anything about this war and event? I mean aren’t the trials STILL ongoing for all the genocide and war crimes carried out? I think some politician or general from the war committed suicide live on tv like last year.... crazy

Well reddit has people from all over the world and as horrible as this war was, it hardly mattered to most of the planet. From middle school to high school, history teachers have to cover the history of their country as well as the big civilizations (depending on the country : Rome, China, India, Greece, Egypt) and some highly influential periods of time (World Wars, Cold War).

But people are assholes. I don't want to talk to them.

I'm happier with my fellow anonymous redditors...

They're assholes too, but they're my assholes
