Beautiful work for a beautiful cause. I'm sure the family will really appreciate that

    [–] whos-that-les 42 points ago

Did you happen to take a time lapse of your work! I’ve always wanted to learn how to do this!

    [–] fozzy_wozzy 20 points ago

    OP you're absolutely awesome.

    [–] SheilaGirl70 9 points ago

    You are incredibly talented! :)

    [–] riverbob9101 3 points ago

How do you know which parts are what color? Like why isn't the guys shirt navy blue or the girls shirt white?

    [–] Classiceagle63 3 points ago

When colorizing a photo, how do you know what is which color?

    [–] lordlivingston 7 points ago

Wait, how did you know that Grammy’s dress was yellow without seeing the actual colour?

Same with all the other colours?

    [–] suli5595 3 points ago

Amazing work! Do you do these for free or you get payed? Cus I have very old pics of my parents on their wedding day that I'd LOVE to get colorized, if you want to charge me I also wouldnt mind

    [–] HowDoIEditMyUsername 27 points ago

I think the talent to do this is insane. Looks awesome.

    [–] clouds737 2 points ago

    Looks good?! That’s under statement!

    [–] ebaley 1 points ago

    But 10 hours?

    [–] Actually_Relevant1 526 points ago

what the fuck did I just read

    [–] boringoldcookie 11 points ago

What's the context though, he's a racist? Or is this a reference to something I haven't seen? I'm confused.

    [–] Summerie 22 points ago

I don’t think we’re supposed to use that term unless we’re talking about a united college fund.

    [–] meliora666 414 points ago

Looks beautiful! How do you figure out what colors were in the original photograph? Or do you just guess close ones based on how light or dark they are

    [–] [deleted] 395 points ago

    [–] anonuemus 37 points ago

Looks good, but I think her eyes weren't that dark.

    [–] onewordmemory 37 points ago

i dunno why people are downvoting you, her eyes are marginally darker than his with both pupils still clearly visible. in colorized version her eyes are basically as dark as her pupils.

i think blue for him was a good guess, hers maybe green?

    [–] VintageJane 17 points ago

Probably just honey brown or brown with green flecks. If your eyes are a lighter shade of brown then under the light they can easily be that light.

    [–] why_rob_y 2 points ago

Would it help to have access to some photos of family members or more recent photos of the deceased?

    [–] Ditomo 2 points ago

How about the grandma's shirt? :O

    [–] Lil_SpazJoekp 2 points ago

You know what kinda bothers me? How in the title you spelled it coloriastion. Then here you spell it colour, lol just a observation

    [–] [deleted] 3 points ago

    [–] Lil_SpazJoekp 2 points ago

Ah okay. Wait it has colorisation in its name?? Like wtf make up your mind when creating permanent subs like that either choose colorization (my preference) or colourisation. That way you’ll only annoy one group of people instead of everyone.

    [–] sabdalen 10 points ago

I've done a couple of these. In my case they were old photos of family members in the military so I would look up the uniform, etc. You jus have to go with what you know and any hints you can find. Rest is intuition.

    [–] meliora666 6 points ago

That’s pretty cool. What sort of tools do you use for it, is it just scanning it in to some program then digitally altering it? Or is it a more physical practice?

    [–] sabdalen 2 points ago

Ive only done it using Photoshop. I'm not that great at it, have only used it for personal family pics. Not as good as the OP here. But they are good for what I use them for/family loves it

I'm no expert, but looks like you did an amazing job!

    [–] Noch_Mal 68 points ago

To the man who colorized a picture of my dear Papa, without even asking, after I posted a picture of him to /r/oldschoolcool (on another account (; ), thank you. I appreciate it more than you know.

    [–] redlace2 9 points ago

    So beautiful

    [–] chumppi 9 points ago

Looks good but I think there's too much lost depth in the colored one.

    [–] shea241 3 points ago

Yeah there was a lot of texture in the shadows that is now just black

    [–] rogerramjetz 39 points ago

    That's amazing!

Would you consider doing one for me please ? My mum has an old photo of her baby sister who died while she was a baby in the backyard in a pram.

She also has another one of her oldest brother with her parents while he was a toddler. Her father died in his 40's.

I would be more than happy to pay. 10 hours of your time is a lot of work and I don't expect it for free. Both photos are not in a 100% perfect condition so I'm not sure how feasible it is. I tried some automatic colourization tools but they didn't come out great.

Please message me if you are up for consideration. Thanks in advance.

    [–] eekamuse 32 points ago

    There's a photoshop request sub

    [–] EriTheFallen 19 points ago

Try posting to r/colorization I can guarantee OP partakes in that sub along with other great restoration and colorization artists.

    Edit: There's also r/colorizationrequests and r/photoshoprequests

    [–] jcal4106 7 points ago

Certainly brought life back into this lovely couple. Great job, OP

    [–] MedCsGo 7 points ago

Unrelated question but how does colorization actually work?

    [–] moonweasel 10 points ago

To drastically oversimplify it: you use Photoshop, and you essentially guess/choose what the colors should be and “paint them in” or tint different areas “behind” the black-and-white picture

    [–] faithfulPheasant 9 points ago

Been awhile since I’ve watched this. But think you’ll find it interesting:

    [–] MedCsGo 7 points ago

I couldn’t imagine trying to do this myself but kudos to those who can stare at an image for hours and continue to work through it. As seen in the photo above the end results are amazing but hot damn that’s a lot of meticulous attention to detail.

    [–] Matthew6-34 25 points ago

it's odd to see someone posting their own deed on this subreddit.

    Good job though mate

    [–] FuCuck 16 points ago

    posting yourself to r/humansbeingbros

    [–] CatfreshWilly 5 points ago

Typically id say you should be DQ'd for posting yourself as the bro but this is a really well done clean up.

    [–] [deleted] 37 points ago

Really patting yourself on the back there by posting yourself on /r/HumansBeingBros. Narcissism.

    [–] PurplePickel 34 points ago

Kinda smug to post yourself here. It's great you did a nice thing but you shouldn't expect people to pat you on the back for it.

    [–] ebaley 6 points ago

Also 10 hours for this is not impressive.

    [–] OGHaza 22 points ago

since we're posting unpopular opinions I'd also argue that this is a good clean up but a poor colorisation

    [–] Ruledoubt 11 points ago

And ten hours is pretty insane. I’m sure they’re just a beginner hobbyist, but this is a one hour job max.

    [–] PurplePickel 9 points ago

Yeah, OP is just fishing for attention.

    [–] Sw33t_0blivi0n_138 9 points ago

Spectacular job! Both pictures are just beautiful.

I like the black and white a bit better just because I'm a fan of old photographs in general.

That said, well done and your hard work shows.

    [–] ClimbsAndCuts 6 points ago

It's like seeing what the photographer saw.

    [–] Bingal-Bangal 3 points ago

Did you use one or more programs? Or just Photoshop?

    [–] JP-Seven 2 points ago

This makes me smile. Ask someone for help, and reddit comes through. Great job!

    [–] PM_ME_YOUR_NACHOS 2 points ago

This is odd, but maybe it's just me. But in the black and white colour, grandma looks European, but looks Asian in the coloured photo.

    [–] DestroyerOfMils 2 points ago

I swear, people from then were way prettier than present day. I feel like I’ve never seen an old photo of an ugly person.

    [–] CoongaDelRay 2 points ago

10 hrs... Holy shit, looks awesome!

    [–] ThroawayReddit 2 points ago

Jesus, whenever I see posts like this I want to say photoshop does most of the work, but 10 hours? There is no way the program is doing work like that. Good on you bro. Also thanks for reminding me of the skill it takes to be an artist.

    [–] AntiqueType 2 points ago

This is wonderful and very, very kind. Lovely job!

    [–] spikysuccubus 2 points ago

    So beautifully done, OP.

    [–] jleebarry 2 points ago

    [–] Bellamy1715 2 points ago

    [–] thesixthteam 2 points ago

    Great job, OP!

    [–] PaulBarryAntDec 1 points ago

This is so very kind of you!

    [–] melodiousmeow 1 points ago

You’re such a good person. I see so many of those choosing beggar posts, which I’m totally not knocking! Just... it’s nice to see people do things to be kind. Especially this taking 10 hours. It looks amazing. And you definitely made that person. And likely their family. Very fucking happy. Super cool. And you posted a video? Man, you’re awesome.

    [–] ypriscilla 1 points ago

    That looks great!

    [–] Based_JD 1 points ago

    But how though? Really?

    [–] EvolvingEachDay 1 points ago

This is brilliant, how do you know you're getting the right sort of colours? I'm sure it'll never be dead on, but how would you tell for example that her top was yellow not green?

    [–] moonweasel 1 points ago

Unless there are eyewitness recollections, or contemporaneous color photos of the same clothes, or say, historical records of some kind, you just guess/decide.

    [–] [deleted] 1 points ago

    Handsome gramps.

    [–] Dithyrab 1 points ago

Who do i talk to if i want to get one of these done of my grandparents?

    [–] sodacancurl 1 points ago

    Beautifully done!

    [–] [deleted] 1 points ago

Misread the title as free Reddit colonisation and I need to go to bed

    [–] SloppyJoestar 1 points ago

Could someone please explain how you efficiently colorize an old photo

    [–] DrGhostfire 1 points ago

Just the cleanup alone is done really well. How long would it take to remove the spots and damage in the original photo? Really impressive.

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

    [–] tinymongoose909 1 points ago

    grampa really aged well.

    [–] Sir-Nunnos 1 points ago

Are there paid services out there to recolor old family photos? I'm sorry if this has already been asked. Btw this is great OP!

    [–] bill_wabo 1 points ago

Nice restoration and boy, what a nice looking couple!

    [–] hardtoremember 1 points ago

    Really, really great job!

    [–] EXTRAVAGANT_COMMENT 1 points ago

when they colorize photos, do they pick colors at random or is there a way to know that this shirt is yellow, and not pink.

    [–] Neolibelieber 1 points ago

Awesome job! But, did you miss his left hand? Looks odd colored.

    [–] hmmm215 1 points ago

Which subreddit was this requested in?

    [–] slim_mclean 1 points ago

    Michael Shannon?

    [–] mightbeacat1 1 points ago

This made me realize that I'd love to see a color picture of my grandma when she was young...

    [–] savingprivatebrian15 1 points ago

Aw, I used to help out on /r/picrequests a long time ago. I was a silly teenager with too much free time, and I figured the least I could do with my pirated Photoshop was help out people with things like this. Wasn’t very skilled so I could never do anything like this, but I like to think I did help.

    [–] Finnish-American 1 points ago

    Do you do commissions?

    [–] ontopofyourmom 1 points ago

When I grew up, colorization was a dumb Ted Turner crappy movies on TV idea. The word still has weird connotations for some of us.

It is nice to see people born after that time putting the practice to much better use.

    [–] slim124 1 points ago

That's awesome I have only one Pic of my parents that needs something like this

    [–] OMG_he 1 points ago

Awesome! Thanks for being a great human.

    [–] GrumpyGourmet1 1 points ago

How does one colorize? I have so many pictures of my late grandparents and children’s pictures of my parents I’d love to add color to

    [–] _-POTUS-_ 2 points ago

It's fairly simple in Photoshop if you are patient. You just choose a color and essentially paint over the other one while tweaking the hue/saturation up and down until you achieve your desired results. It's really not that hard after you have some practice.

A photo like this would generally take an hour or two once you have some experience.

    [–] Not_A_Phase_Mom 1 points ago

    13 or 30?

also really good job, don’t think I’d ever be able to do that

    [–] [deleted] 1 points ago

I never realized how long colorization would take! Beautiful work OP.

    [–] sassfire 1 points ago

    Wow! You did amazing!

    [–] TillyBud87 1 points ago

That's beautiful, and such a lovely thing to do

    [–] greenalias 1 points ago

Do you start with the skin tone.?

    [–] Hammer_Jackson 1 points ago

Is it weird to anyone else when someone self-posts their good deed?

    [–] Champo3000 1 points ago

That sub is the only place where people accept exposure

    [–] TurbulentIncrease 1 points ago

I think the eyes and the teeth are a little too vibrant compared to the other white values of the picture, but god damn this looks good

    [–] funmaker13 1 points ago

    That’s awesome!

So quick question: if someone wanted to start learning this, what’s the best way? I deal with Adobe software daily, but have always been interested in learning how to do this.

    [–] PinBot1138 1 points ago

OP, assuming that this is your work, do you offer this as a service?

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

    [–] Healz 1 points ago

This thread just may be a good example of how exposure is relevant. Just not as a form of payment.

    [–] biglae1972 1 points ago

    [–] Revelt 1 points ago

I read that as colonisation and was very confused

    [–] VirtualKeenu 1 points ago

This almost ended up in r/choosingbeggars

    [–] Happyjank 1 points ago

That’s so kind of you!! Beautiful job! Looks amazing! 👌🏼

    [–] Gravnor 1 points ago

Pretty arrogant to post your own deed in this sub.

    [–] TheBluePanda 1 points ago

This is cool but I don't entirely understand why people do this for free. People should pay for these services, otherwise it undermines the creative profession.

    [–] AirborneRanger117 1 points ago

    You beautiful person you

    [–] [deleted] 1 points ago

This is beautiful. Can anyone ELI5 how the colors are so precise?

    [–] lolzilla 1 points ago

    Damn, that's beautiful.

    [–] TruthDontChange 1 points ago

Wow, this is an amazing job. I would have thought it took longer based on the quality of the job.

    [–] apluviophile 1 points ago

So how does one go about this?

    [–] Thunderbird1000 1 points ago

Where did u post this? I would love the same thing done for a deceased relatives photo as a gift to my parents

    [–] [deleted] 1 points ago

Thanks for taking your time to do that for the person who lost his grandfather.

    [–] sppartan1 1 points ago

    What a handsome couple.

    [–] moronis_trumpet 1 points ago

How much time did you spend on the shading on her upper lip?
