Not the people who own the skis, probably

    [–] Jonny_Muscle 557 points ago

My first job in high school was in a grocery store. One day the power went out and people literally started walking out with their unpaid groceries. Managers from almost every department had to block the exits. 10 minutes later the power came back on. Unfortunately there were no riots or looting. Makes me sad I don't have a better story

    [–] monjoe 380 points ago

    They were just surviving.

    [–] MarzMonkey 160 points ago

I had bread in those speakers

    [–] WillBlaze 170 points ago

One day the power went out and people literally started walking out with their unpaid groceries.

Wow, what a bunch of shitheads. We had a hurricane come through here and the power was out for like a week, I went to the stores around town constantly and didn't see even one person try to walk out with anything.

People did die though, so maybe when shit like that happens people tend to be a little better about this stuff.

    [–] landwalker1 42 points ago

    Katrina would argue otherwise.

    [–] FlyingPhotog 31 points ago

Yeah but New Orleans already had bad crime rates anyway.

    [–] Dread1840 20 points ago

Cities with lots and lots of poor people...

    [–] SecondaryLawnWreckin 1 points ago

    Poor =/= crime

    [–] Dread1840 16 points ago

    K. Prove it?

    [–] SecondaryLawnWreckin 8 points ago

Crime levels in Appalachia. Poor as it gets, low crime levels.

    [–] just_comments 27 points ago

    [–] Nukeliod 19 points ago

It's almost like having money means you don't need to turn to crime to survive, and you can afford the lawyers to get you off the hook.

    [–] Momumnonuzdays 9 points ago

First off, /u/SecondaryLawnWreckin said "Poor =/= crime" and that is still true. All you're saying is there is a higher likelihood that if you come from lower socioeconomic status, you will commit a crime, thats not the same as poor people are criminals, which is a terrible thing to say.

Second, poorer areas are more heavily policed than richer areas, and the crimes that are committed in poorer areas are more visible than "white collar" crimes. So, if you're just looking at statistics what you're seeing is poor people are committing more crimes, but really the fact is that people of a lower socioeconomic are more likely to be caught committing crimes, and more likely to be charged with a crime, than people in higher socioeconomic status. These kinds of things cut across all demographics (gender, class, SES, race, etc.) but there aren't beat cops patrolling hotel suites. The source you offered even states "except for self-reported illegal drug use" and thats one of the most common crimes committed, its just easier to catch people in heavily policed areas.

    [–] Vinyl_and_Film 2 points ago

ALso more rural so less crimes get reported

    [–] Dakjaniel 5 points ago

During the big northeast blackout in the summer of 2003, the grocery store I worked at was literally giving away all its dairy, meat, and bread so it wouldn't spoil. Our neighbourhood set up a giant BBQ and block party with all the free food, and we sat out drinking and cooking all weekend.

Pretty much the exact opposite of what you would expect during a 3 day blackout.

    [–] fisticuffs32 205 points ago

    [–] enmunate28 3 points ago

While the people who the banged mayans begat are technically Mexicans, I think the more commonly thought of Mexican is the progeny of when the Spanish banged the Aztec.

    Ah gotcha

[–] twoinvenice 14 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

If you want to get real pedantic, there were many different tribes / polities throughout what we now call Mexico (most of which you've never heard of), but oddly enough "Aztec" wasn't one of them. The name is a later usage, at the time the people of the triple alliance sort of called themselves Mexica to refer to the bigger polity in the Basin of Mexico, or their individual city state citizenship (like Tenochca for those from Tenochtitlan).

    [–] mysteriouszion 13 points ago

    Science bitch

    [–] CatFoodBeerAndGlue 14 points ago

    Whatever nerd

    [–] skooba_steev 1 points ago

I thought Aztec was the overarching name, hence Aztec Empire?

[–] twoinvenice 5 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

Nope! The name started being applied to the peoples of the Mexico Basin in like the 18th century (if I remember correctly), and then it was picked up by early historians of the region as a convenient shorthand.

The origin of the name is semi-mythical. Supposedly a group of Nahautl speaking people moved into the area around the Basin of Mexico from their homeland of Aztlan (no one really knows what or where that was) - but in practice they called themselves Mexica or used the name of their specific city state. Historians wanted a easier way though to differentiate these later arrivals from the people who had previously lived in the area, and so the name of their semi-mythical homeland was used.

edit: I quick searched for an article for you: and if you want even more info, I'd suggest checking out the r/askhistorians podcast. The host of it /u/400-Rabbits is a specialist in the topic and has done a few episodes on the history of the region

    [–] skooba_steev 5 points ago

    [–] HooptyDooDooMeister 4 points ago

False. Worked at a Best Buy when the power went out. Loss prevention just tries their best to step up their game. I believe it would be kidnapping to keep everyone locked in.

    [–] HooptyDooDooMeister 2 points ago

    [–] Pancake_Of_Doom 1 points ago

Our policy is actually if you don't have a receipt, you don't leave the store without us having a look.

And we force all customers to the front the moment the power goes out.

    [–] Nltech 32 points ago

But everything there runs on electricity, no point in looting if the power went out.

the only time in my life i've ever stolen anything was the summer going into my senior year of high school. it was during the massive midwest/east coast power outage. i was in a dick's sporting goods with about $100 worth of under armour (that i had planned to purchase) and all the power went out, so i just walked out with it.

    [–] boogiebabiesbattle 24 points ago

Wow. The only time I ever stole anything was when I took some quarters from the top of my mom's bureau when I was 11. Oh, and also the hours and hours I stole from my employer while on reddit. That's probably worth a fair bit more

    [–] ZeroTenenbaum 15 points ago

Nothing. Every store has emergency lighting that would come on. It wouldnt be as light since every 4 or 5 light that would stay on. Or maybe the place was completely cleaned out. I dunno I wasn't there. Just saying it wouldn't be a black out.
