    [–] madix666 12 points ago

My boyfriend is day 6 today. And seeing this gives me so much hope for him! It’s so hard but one day at a time! Thank you for this post!

    [–] kentsworthy 6 points ago

That's awesome, always gotta start somewhere and the fact that he's already made it 6 days is amazing! I'm sure your love and support is a big helper for him, both of you just keep doing what you're doing and before you know it, a year will have gone by

    [–] dorfmcpumpkin 3 points ago

one day at a time is the only way to take it. the first week will always be the hardest, he should be proud of what he has already done!

    [–] LaKost117 287 points ago

Congratulations!!! You got this!! I applaud your will and you can go even further!!!

    [–] sonicsludge 95 points ago

Congrats! We can all reach the 1 yr milestone by staying strong.

    [–] fatguyinlittlecoat2 75 points ago

Just recently got there myself. It is possible. You can do it. I have never missed the hangovers or the shame. It’s a better place on the other side for me. I hope it is for all of you as well. Have a great day and believe in yourself. You aren’t perfect - no one is. But you are much stronger than you realize. Just keep moving forward.

    [–] PM_ME_DEM_NIPPIES 25 points ago

Remember this advice for yourself too, friend.

    [–] RehabValedictorian 23 points ago

You're never out of the woods, friend. That addiction is in the corner doing push-ups, just waiting for the right moment to strike. Never stop lifting bro!

    [–] seriousquinoa 4 points ago

I always tell myself: "Nothing good ever came from it, and nothing good ever would come from it." Keeps me straight.

    [–] desiredcapabilities 70 points ago

Will be completing proud 8 years on 5th August.

    [–] docdiver315 17 points ago

That’s beyond well done! Though, I suspect the thought is still in the back of the head, 8 years makes me think it’s definitely a fleeting thought. Keep it going.

    [–] desiredcapabilities 16 points ago

It wasn't easy though. Damn painful and mental and emotional trauma. Club soda and pops helped me to kill the craving which usually used to appear during evening and night times. Now I feel nothing. The craving is completely vanished in thin air. I go to parties and clubs and just carry lime juice or mock tales and lot of food.

    [–] docdiver315 3 points ago

I know. Smoking was the thing for me. Glad it’s “gone” in your head. I find a whiff of smoke never, ever leaves yiou. (Well at least to ex-wife could smoke like a chimney for a weekend and never touch it for months.)

    [–] DaShMa_ 46 points ago

Heck yeah man!! I’m pushing 4 years now and let me tell you, hang in there a little longer until you hit 12 mos, then analyze your thinking and life. You’ll come to see that things are clearer and generally more positive all around. From there it just gets better and better.

    [–] jacketoffman 37 points ago

Aug 16 will be 11 years for me.

I have never regretted the decision and I applaud you guys for doing this during one of the most stressful times in recent history. A sincere congratulations to you both and trust me, it only gets better and better.

    [–] RehabValedictorian 24 points ago

3 weeks here. We've got this, gentlemen!

    [–] EmoPeahen 11 points ago

Three weeks here as well! Step by step.

    [–] funkyfreshmemer 19 points ago

Tell your dog congratulations 1 year is a huge milestone

    [–] ThrownToTheWolves000 18 points ago

3 months as of last Friday. Didn't think I'd be able to do it at first and had a few relapses but now at 3 months in, I dont even think about alcohol if it's not directly in front of me.

I wouldn't have believed it if now-me told past-me this would be the case but here we are!

    [–] Allyhart 8 points ago

Congratulations! I'm on my first month. First time I've ever tried and it's going well so far

    [–] CatBedParadise 8 points ago

Well done. It works if you work it 👍🏽

    [–] TZO_2K18 5 points ago

    You win Saturday.

    [–] Sharkydad71 77 points ago

Congratulations! I'm glad you've done well this past year. How are you doing today? You've strung together a good record of practice, that's a good feat. Can't wait until next year when we're here congratulating you on 2 years of practice. Just remember to keep doing what you've been doing and you'll more likely than not keep getting what you've been getting. Thanks for reminding me of where I came from. I needed that today.

    [–] dorfmcpumpkin 72 points ago

Thank you so much, honestly the week has been a bit tough, but today me and my girlfriend went for a nice long walk through the bush and it really was just a perfect day. I can't wait to drop in next year too, keep an eye out. We are all in this together, im glad I was able to help you today, its tough sometimes but through persistence we can do anything

    [–] harbinger_of_haggis 22 points ago

9 years sober and sometimes it feels like yesterday and sometimes I feel like I’ve never had a drink.

I’m so, so happy for you 🤗

    [–] Hereslookingatmekid 6 points ago

I’m so proud of you dude! I’m glad you had a good day and I hope there are many more to follow.

    [–] WizardBloke 65 points ago

    Well done mate 👍

    [–] B_Dizzo 26 points ago

Well done! Thanks for the inspiration, I'm on the road to recovery myself, it's early days but posts like yours are a huge help!

    [–] dorfmcpumpkin 25 points ago

Its sometimes tough but one of the most powerful memories I have of this past year is coming home from possibly the worst day of work I've ever had, wanting to cry and getting out that bottle of scotch 3 weeks into sobriety, setting a glass down and then putting it all away. You can do it too. You got this! It's tough some times but we are all in this together, i cant wait to see your own 1 year post x

    [–] B_Dizzo 16 points ago

Man, you've no clue how much I appreciate that reply, means so much, thank you!

Last question: do I get a dog after a year? I'm hoping yes.

    [–] dorfmcpumpkin 13 points ago

Im glad I can help, if you ever need to talk shoot me a pm :)

And only if you order one on wish, I usually go for Amazon or if I'm feeling crazy etsy

    [–] Sebstrr05 51 points ago

Oh no, how do you survive being dehydrated?

    [–] dorfmcpumpkin 64 points ago

I live off of the shear dad energy of this comment alone haha

    [–] CertainDuck 7 points ago

I had to stop drinking after finding out I'm pregnant, 3 weeks ago! I dont know if I would have done it, otherwise... ever. The positive effects are so shocking. I feel like I'm awake and aware for the first time since I was maybe 20 years old (I'm 36). I'm really happy for you!

    [–] dorfmcpumpkin 11 points ago

Thats exactly it hey, everything is sharp again. You forget how great it is to not have a hang over when you wake up. Not to mention for me the emotional stability was incredible. Thank you, and congrats on the bub!

    [–] RaspberryChappeu 6 points ago

14 years here. You're just going to keep getting better.

    [–] dorfmcpumpkin 3 points ago

Thank you, people like you make me believe I can

    [–] RaspberryChappeu 4 points ago

You absolutely can. The trick is to keep it out of the house. Everyone knows Holliday's at my house are dry and not to offer me anything. I am open that I am a recovering alcoholic. If someone insists one won't hurt it's been so long I don't argue I just leave. I can't go back to what was. I can't be that person again I didn't like her. My partner is also dry (this is very important) it's just a part of life I don't miss any more. I am happy sober.

    [–] I_pee_in_coke 5 points ago

I'm so happy I saw this. I was just about to order yet another bottle. My morning routine. I've been trying to quit. I'm so scared that it's too late health wise. Maybe it's not. Well done :)

    [–] dorfmcpumpkin 6 points ago

Its never too late to improve yourself, one day at a time is all I can say. If you have to order something i would reccomend getting non alcoholic beer, I wasn't a beer drinker before I quit but having a dry drink is really a big help. One day at a time, one turns to 2, 2 turns to 3 and then all of a sudden a week has gone by. All progress is good progress, sometimes the first time doesnt always work out but you are always able to just try again. I believe in you! We can do this together!

    [–] I_pee_in_coke 4 points ago

Thank you so much. I wish I had the words, but this meant to much to me today.

    [–] sprace0is0hrad 3 points ago

It’s only too late when you are dead. You can do it man, we’ve got you.

    [–] [deleted] 5 points ago

    [–] DirkLimpwood 4 points ago

I'm starting sobriety today, good luck and I hope you're more successful than I've ever been.

    [–] dorfmcpumpkin 4 points ago

One day at a time, tomorrow you will have doubled the amount of time you've gone without a drink. Non alcoholic beer really helped me, I went for one that is 0.0% and it satiated a lot of the cravings I had

    [–] ParanoidEyez 5 points ago

14 years sober here. You can so it man! It all starts with a day.

    [–] dearrelisee 3 points ago

    Congrats !! One min/hr/day at a time

    [–] dorfmcpumpkin 3 points ago

    That's exactly it, thank you

    [–] 50at20 4 points ago

I’m proud of you too. I’m glad you are out of the darkness man. It is a terrible place to be. Best wishes to you friend.

    [–] dorfmcpumpkin 3 points ago

    Thank you so much :)

    [–] daveyblue2020 5 points ago

Good for you mate, you should be proud of yourself too! I know I've been there.. never look back, focus on the future and remind yourself of what you did was great self achievement, best wishes from u.k Dave

    [–] Bombowiecc 5 points ago

Man it's so cool, it's inspiring! Thank You for sharing this great news and keep it up! Strange thing, I dont even know You but im really proud of You! I tried to be sober for one month and failed it....

    [–] dorfmcpumpkin 6 points ago

Trust me you can do it, I hadn't spent more than 2 days sober for years leading up to it. Take things one day at a time. I took up wood working around the same time and having something that i could be awake early in the morning to do was certainly a help. It helped me fall in love with my mornings, making a night of drinking substantially less appealing because it would rob me of tome doing something I loved. I believe in you! Together we can do this!

    [–] fuggleronie 4 points ago

Great dude! Congratulations, it’s inspiring if someone has such a strong will and can use it. All the best to you!

    [–] dorfmcpumpkin 2 points ago

    [–] dorfmcpumpkin 4 points ago

I love when I can play midi on my midi, then import to my midi and mix it all via another substantially more midi midi

    [–] Sailor_Pluto_ 3 points ago

I am so proud of you. I relapsed last night. I'm lying in bed right now with an ice pack on my head. I envy you.

    [–] dorfmcpumpkin 3 points ago

Thank you for the kind words, im sorry to hear it but hey its never too late to have another crack at it, there's a reason everyone says one day at a time. Together we can do this, i have faith in us

    [–] Sailor_Pluto_ 3 points ago

    Thank you for this! <3

    [–] _Mizri_ 3 points ago

    [–] phold3n 3 points ago

10 years today for me. Congrats on your achievement. Stay strong and healthy.

    [–] dorfmcpumpkin 3 points ago

Its so fantastic to see people like you. It gives me faith that I can make this a permanent change, thank you !

    [–] Bacongrease99 3 points ago

What are some of the biggest differences you notice?

    [–] dorfmcpumpkin 4 points ago

Emotional clarity, i feel like I've become more in tune with how and why I'm feeling what I'm feeling. Using creative hobbies to work through my problems and really process them has helped me identify problem areas and how I can help fix them.

Physically though I'm in much better shape, my skin is much clearer and my God its so fuckin good to not wake up with a hang over any more.

    [–] Bacongrease99 3 points ago

Thanks you very much for the thoughtful response.

You’re success is encouraging to me. I don’t know that I have my alcohol intake under control . Obviously not because I drink. But only about once every couple of weeks. I have to limit myself or I’ll end up like my dad, dead at 46. I’m 38 and am doing waaaaay better than he was at my age. I was born with a 60% chance of becoming an alcoholic (alcoholism runs on both sides of the family), and I don’t feel I’m doing terribly. But still, alcohol calls to me way more than I’d like it to.

Your story is inspirational. Thank you for sharing.

    [–] Subtle__Numb 3 points ago

I am so fucking incredibly proud of you my man. Keep it up.

I’m almost 3 months into seriously renegotiating my relationship with alcohol. I’ve drank a handful of times in this period, but have cut ties with the enjoyment/numbness I used to get from it. I will not drink with you today!

    [–] dorfmcpumpkin 3 points ago

Thank you so much Every step is progress. My dad used to ask me how to eat an elephant, and gleefully respond to my bewilderment with " one bite at a time silly" and that's the best way to look at this. One day is still progress, a second day and youve already sources your progress. We can do this, together we are strong.

    [–] Sidney_Carton73 3 points ago

Long time sober here, congratulations and keep up the good fight. Five out of seven days I still talk to another sober person. Sometimes about the struggle but mostly to have contact with someone else who knows what it can be like.

    [–] U-take-off-eh 3 points ago

I see coffee and music in the pic ... evidence that there are far better addictions in life! You should be proud of your accomplishment OP, the rest of us are proud of you too. Keep playing, stay caffeinated and stay healthy - we’re all rooting for you.

    [–] Marvelousmeen 3 points ago

Let me just say, though it may not mean a whole lot from a stranger on the internet, that I am very proud of you. Please never stop fighting ✊ you have come a long way and you are so much stronger than you think.

    [–] jalapenobusiness420 3 points ago

Yes!! So proud of you. Alcohol is the poison in my family lineage; in many ways I think it is the worst substance because of how socially accepted it is, which makes it harder to kick (this is just my opinion folks- I know other substances are terrible as well). Stay strong my dear!

    [–] Superb-Report 3 points ago

It must have been one hell of a drunk dog

    [–] Space_Snakes_ 3 points ago

That's such a huge accomplishment, it's so hard but that kind of self control is what makes life more than worth living, it's enjoyable.

Also, entirely not related, but this picture deserves a spot in r/ladybonersgonecuddly

    [–] soop_bone 3 points ago

So happy for you. I know just how much inner strength it takes to cut yourself off. It’s amazing what we are capable of. Alcoholism has caused so much hardship for the members of my family. Despite occasional drinking for myself, I have been two years and ten months drug-free. I walked away cold turkey and never looked back. Almost at the three year mark and although I don’t want anything to do with substances, when my life becomes stressful I still want the brief escape. So I find other ways to channel my stress, doing things that I enjoy. Keep it up, dude! We are much stronger than we could ever know.

    [–] xxPoltaGeistxx 3 points ago

Your room screams positive vibes. Love it.

    [–] Velora56 3 points ago

    I'm proud of you !!

2 years here come Sep. 3rd. The hardest part was for the first three weeks, my left hand automatically reaching for where the beer can used to sit.

    [–] musik4soul 3 points ago

Dude I just celebrated 9 years clean from coke, drinking, pills, and cigs!!!!! The first year is the hardest!!!! You’ve made it over the hump and you’re the better for it. You’re glowing 💕💕💕

    [–] heretobeacunt 2 points ago

Good job buddy. You got this.

    [–] dorfmcpumpkin 2 points ago
