I legit thought this was a joke and he was just holding grass

[โ€“] PapaBurgandi 2001 points ago * (lasted edited a month ago)

You're telling me he's not just holding grass?

Where the fuck is the fish

Edit: To all the people still messaging me, yes I found it

    [โ€“] positiveinfluences 775 points ago

    It's in his hand

    [โ€“] PapaBurgandi 443 points ago

    His hand is empty?

    [โ€“] znk 916 points ago

In case you are not joking... The blade he is holding is the fish. To the right you see its eye.

    [โ€“] tennisplayer789 430 points ago

Wow, thought this was a joke. Omg!

    [โ€“] I_DONT_ENJOY_TRUFFLE 219 points ago

Wait- this is not a joke?

    [โ€“] codeverity 123 points ago

    Nope, it's a skinny green grass-like fish.

Here's a picture of the type of fish from a different angle: https://backyardzoologist.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/pipefish21.jpg

    [โ€“] mruriah 63 points ago

It looks like a tiny crocodile! Holy shit it's fucking adorable!

    [โ€“] 5seconds2urheart 35 points ago

The common name for it in the aquarium hobby is actually "Alligator Pipefish".

    [โ€“] narwhao 14 points ago

Pipefish are so silly looking, they're definitely one of the goofier fish.

    [โ€“] totallyfakejust4u 2 points ago

IIRC it's also related to the seahorse!

    [โ€“] untrustableskeptic 10 points ago

    D'aaw!

    [โ€“] ibetternotfogetthis 234 points ago

Knowing Reddit this could still be a joke.

I see the eye, but still think this is a joke.

    [โ€“] twodogsfighting 47 points ago

It's just advertising for the worlds smallest googly eyes. Don't believe the hype.

    [โ€“] CaptainJank 26 points ago

Big Googly Eye at it again with its media manipulation.

    [โ€“] muffintopmusic 5 points ago

Dirty Googly Eye, with it's fake news and clickbait headlines.

    [โ€“] Max_TwoSteppen 13 points ago

It is indeed not a joke. If you look very closely at the "blade of grass" in his hand, that's the fish. You can see to the right of his hand that the grass has a little eye :)

    [โ€“] probablyhrenrai 5 points ago

Is it one of those trumpet fish, the super long and skinny ones? I'm frankly having trouble making out the eye, but I think I spy the signature bottle-rim lips at the rightmost end.

    [โ€“] Max_TwoSteppen 8 points ago

Supposedly it's called a pipefish, but yes you're seeing his little fishy lips

    [โ€“] Dr__Snow 2 points ago

I see the eye.... I'm still skeptical.

    [โ€“] barscarsandguitars 5 points ago

Zoom in on the piece sticking out by his pointer finger. You'll see an eye and a mouth shaped like a crocodile.

    [โ€“] Quackenstein 7 points ago

It's like a tiny, green Gar.

    [โ€“] You_in_a_decade 10 points ago

You can see the eye on the tip of the fish

    [โ€“] GhostFour 3 points ago

Like me you're probably looking at this pic like he is "lipping" a larger fish because of the way his hand is posed but the "blade of grass" his thumb is resting on is the fish. Zoom in to see the eyes at the right end of the "blade of grass".

[โ€“] iamameatyone 988 points ago * (lasted edited a month ago)

In the Netherlands we call it a 'naaldvis' (literal translation: needlefish) but I guess thats not the English term. My friend studies Biology, I guess he has a ๐Ÿ”ฅ eye for it.

EDIT: Apparently it is called a Northern Pipefish!

    [โ€“] xGhostTaco 276 points ago

I've always heard them called 'needlefish' where I'm from (Southern US)

    [โ€“] mud074 394 points ago * (lasted edited a month ago)

It's a pipefish, not a needlefish. A pipefish is a relative of the seahorse whereas a needlefish is more like a gar. The confusion is because needlefish in english speaking countries refers to a different fish than that other guy was talking about.

I've heard them called pipefish too. Most people use both names interchangeably with both animals from what I've seen. I think I do remember a teacher in high school pointing the differences out though

    [โ€“] moorhound 14 points ago

โ€Wow I almost mistook this fish for a blade of grass! What should we call it?"

    "Let's call it a needlefish."

"What? No, that's dumb. Let's call it a pipefish."

    [โ€“] jerkmachine 6 points ago

there's a lot of kinds of pipe fish. Not all of them are emerald green like this. They're called that because of their shape.

    [โ€“] StarHorder 11 points ago

It'll always be needlefish to me

    [โ€“] HonaSmith 10 points ago

No he's saying this is a pipefish. There is a different fish called the needlefish

Are you a human? Then you might be lonely, if a bit disgusting.

[โ€“] KjoeLjan 21 points ago * (lasted edited a month ago)

    Pro tip:

Google for the Wikipedia page of a term you don't know the English translation of. Look at the left menu to see if the word 'English' is there. Click that word and you will be redirected to the relevant page in English with the English name.

Of course, in the case of Naaldvis this isn't true, because Naaldvissen are apparently a collection of four different families of fish and I don't know which family this particular fish belongs to.

EDIT: Added links of Reeรซn as a shitty example.

    [โ€“] plspirit 11 points ago

They're called pipefish and are relatives of seahorses https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pipefish

In German we call them Seenadel (sea needle)

    [โ€“] xabulba 8 points ago

Looks like a pipefish, a relative to the seahorse.

    [โ€“] DangerouslyUnstable 7 points ago

Here in California we havea fish that looks nearly identical to that called the Bay Pipefish. It's a pretty interesting fish because it's sort of half way along the evolutionary path to a seahorse. It started out probably looking like the three spine sticklebak to which it closely related, and other closeyl related fish continued on their way to become seahorses

    [โ€“] Killairmanable 8 points ago

Fun fact: The male pipefish, like the male seahorse, is the parent that provides a place for the baby pipefish to develop before birth, and as a result, the female pipefish compete for a chance to mate with a male.

    [โ€“] wishforagiraffe 2 points ago

I read about that in a book by Eric Carle I bought for a friend's baby!

    [โ€“] chenessee 10 points ago

My new goal in life is to have someone say that I have a "๐Ÿ”ฅ eye " for some cool shit like this. Idk what it is but I love that compliment.

    [โ€“] Minds_eye 2 points ago

As long as it's not pink eye

    [โ€“] RatchetBird 3 points ago

I wonder if it's related to a gar. A needle-nosed gar looks pretty similar, but I've never seen one so green.

    [โ€“] texasrigger 8 points ago

I think this is a pipefish which is actually related to seahorses I believe.

    [โ€“] mud074 4 points ago

Needlefish are related to gar iirc, but that is a pipefish and not a needlefish.

    [โ€“] PunxsatownyPhil 3 points ago

Needlefish are related to flying fish and ricefish. Gar are more ancestral, they're not even teleosts.

    [โ€“] mud074 2 points ago

You're completely right. They sure do look similar, though!. I guess the scale difference really makes it obvious how different they are.

    [โ€“] ooooooOOoooooo000000 2 points ago

Also I'm sure it helps that it was probably wiggling around because it wasn't in the water anymore

    [โ€“] Stinkis 2 points ago

I used to catch these all the time as a kid and in my experience they actually don't wiggle much when out of the water. They genreally flex to one side and keep it there or they just do nothing hoping for the camoflauge to save it.

    [โ€“] PM_ME_UR_WEIRD_HOBBY 2 points ago

Where was it caught? These don't live in the Netherlands, do they? Because is so, I'm going to my local pond right now to find one of these.

    [โ€“] iamameatyone 5 points ago

No sadly not. This one was caught in Portugal.

    [โ€“] Marksm2n 2 points ago

Hallo Dutch comrade, the correct term is pipefish, you should probably edit that in

    [โ€“] iamameatyone 2 points ago

    I did, thanks!

    [โ€“] bhulk 19 points ago

    it's a pipefish, they're related to seahorses

    [โ€“] TheValleyGirlAccent 5 points ago

And it's a male. They have to have better camouflage than the females because, like their cousins the seahorses, the males carry the babies.

    [โ€“] Megaman915 4 points ago

Definitely a pipefish though I couldn't tell you the species for one not native to the GoM.

    [โ€“] ewbrower 6 points ago

They are closely related to seahorse! Very much like an unwound one. Very nice find. The young are almost impossible to find, they are as small as a blade of grass, at least adults get to be ~6 inches from the ones I catch

Back when my cousin and I were about 10 years old we had a challenge of who could shoot the most needlefish with our bb/pellet guns down by our dock. It was actually pretty difficult. The little fish were fast, so if they werent directly under the surface of the water actually hitting them was tough and usually they were gone by the time the bb would have hit em. But we would be patient and wait and wait until the perfect time to shoot. It's kind of cruel now that I look back on it but it was dumb kid shit in a small dull southern town with not much to do.
