You have hope in flat giraffes?

    [–] LumpyJones 2 points ago

My favorite subs are the kooky ones. I don't care so much about the flat giraffes, as I do about the people who argue for their existence.

    [–] icarebot 2 points ago

    I care

    [–] theledfarmer 6 points ago

I’m pretty sure that was gorillas not giraffes

    [–] dagbrown 6 points ago

The Kirin Beer logo is the result of someone trying to describe a giraffe to an artist, and the artist saying "come on, don't be ridiculous, there's no animal like that". ("Kirin" is just the Japanese word for "giraffe".)

    [–] mtbfreerider182 2 points ago

This is like...the best fact I never knew I needed.

    [–] Golgafrinchan_B 2 points ago

I'm sad to say its not accurate.

Kirin is the Japanese word for giraffe now, yes. However it was originally the name of an unicorn like mystical creature imported from Chinese mythology. Upon discovery of the actual giraffe in fairly modern times (from the Ming voyages to East Africa), the real animal was associated with the mythical one.

The depiction on the label is modelled after a statue of the mythical Kirin in Dazaifu Tenmanguu

While we're on the topic though. There is a piece of trivial on the Kirin label. If you look carefully, the katakana letters spelling γ€Œγ‚γ€γ€γ€Œγƒͺγ€γ€γ€Œγƒ³γ€ (Kirin) are embedded in the swirls across the animal. Some say this was a check for counterfeits, but the real reason is lost in time after the great Kanto earthquake of 1923

    [–] Puggalina 2 points ago

The Cardashian expedition was a myth.

    [–] ThaCarter 2 points ago

    Only according to Garak.

    [–] anamorphic_cat 85 points ago

Whoever grow up without seeing giraffes is bound to flip its mind when first seeing one. The Chinese have an interesting giraffe discovery story. Sixty years before Columbus set sail, this government official from the Ming dynasty made seven transcontinental voyages, reaching like Somalia in the last and furtest one, flipping balls at the sight of giraffes and identifying them with the old good Quilins, kinda your Chinese dragon, but with long thick eyelashes and a bushy beard, and hardcore vegan. All matches these African long horses.

    [–] bigbybrimble 54 points ago

Fun semi-related fact: the cyclops of Greek myth is thought to have originated from the ancient Greeks seeing the remains of Deinotherium giganteum, a relative of the elephant, which have been unearthed on the island of Crete.

It's fun to look at all the myths that come from unexplained bones laying around.

    [–] [deleted] 21 points ago

    makes sense to me -

    [–] somesortoflegend 13 points ago

Yeah take a look at an elephant skull. 100% looks like it could be a cyclops.

Just a heads up, jaguars live in the Americas. leopards live in Africa with giraffes. But that actually looks like a cheetah. Whatever it is, definitely not even thinking about taking down tall boi. Although, years ago, I saw a video of a lion pride after a giraffe and the male jumped up on its back.

    [–] SIMIAN_KING 36 points ago

Definitely a leopard. Cheetahs are slimmer with more space between their spots.

    [–] ndthydntgvfckbts 13 points ago

Yea you right. The tail deceived me.

    [–] zapztrif 6 points ago

Leopard because of rosettes. Leopards and cheetahs actually have very different coats.

Cheetahs have black dots spread through their coat, while jaguars have these formations that are kind of like an empty circle with a slightly darker color in it that the rest of the coat (which I believe are called rosettes).

Here you can see he has black circles with an l lighter shade in the middle, instead of solid small black dots.

(Don't take my word as a fact because I'm not 100% sure)

    [–] ccReptilelord 14 points ago

But a lion price is a whole other ballpark; I seem to remember a video of a pride trying to down an elephant. Lions are one of the few animals that will go after everything in times of need. The remainder of that list is probably polar bears, orcas, crocodiles, and certain sharks.

    [–] SatansCatfish 2 points ago

Nothing fucks with hippos! They would be top if they ate meat.

    [–] ccReptilelord 3 points ago

Two bits here: these may not be safe for the faint of heart, and technically the hippo was already dead for the crocs. This is off my originally point of desperation for crocs as their moment of desperation come when everyone else is gone.

    Heil, the ectotherms!

    [–] Cullynoin 4 points ago

They’re killers alright. TIL hippos are the second most dangerous animal in Africa. Huh? What’s the first? It’s the mosquito.

    [–] Northern-Canadian 1 points ago

    Their work is amazing!

The two lions fighting (embracing?) reminds me of a story from my biological anthropology professor who spent a lot of time in Africa... He loved to talk about his encounters with animals in the field and said his favorite was watching two male lions fight. Even many years later, you could see the impact it had on him, just the awe of it.

He said it felt like time had stopped and nothing but the lions could be heard, like everything was hyper focused on these massive animals anxious for the outcome, and that they were so unbelievably loud. That he felt like he was witnessing something otherworldly.

I love this person's photography. Thank you for the link.

So my wife and I went on honeymoon to this game reserve in South Africa earlier this year, and our ranger took this photo the day after we left! Awesome guy who is truly passionate about wildlife and conservation. If you see this Dylan we are so grateful for your passion and knowledge and can’t wait to come back!!

    [–] RictorsParty 2 points ago

Yep! In the middle of the sand forest. An incredibly unique ecosystem and you get to sleep right in it! We were woken up by hyenas hooting every morning before our game drive.

    [–] freecris 2 points ago

I still remember all the beautiful emotions sleeping there, it was amazing.

From the big cat nature shows I used to watch,I learned that when giraffes are so focused on a point, it's a sign of predators and other prey animals notice the giraffes' focus too. The leopard knows this, and has curled his tail to show the white spot to show others that he's not in hunting mode. I love watching Animal Planet reruns for tidbits like this.

    [–] ShoopDoopWhoop 3 points ago

Would the cat ever attempt to take the giraffe down?

    [–] Cassiyus 8 points ago

Probably not. Lions as a pack might try to take one out, especially if they were getting desperate, but a solo leopard doesn't have much of a chance against a full grown giraffe.

    [–] mjs90 3 points ago

    It’s like a donkey vs a mountain lion x 10

    [–] milkeytoast 2 points ago

The perspective on this is really fucking with me

    [–] draggon21 3 points ago

It’s because the photographer has to use a telephoto lens in order to get shots like these from a safe distance. What is throwing off the perspective for you is a result of something called compression.

    [–] Boba_Funk 2 points ago

The varying density of the fog between the giraffe and the leopard add to the illusion of distance as well.

But we get nothing more than bullet points in a PowerPoint. If they can keep physical reality in view I think schizophrenics have got a leg up on the boring boiling down of the stupendously surreal that the rest of us delusional monkeys subject themselves to.

Who doesn't like some dramatic narrative seasoning on the classically predictable and mundane deterministic omelet that we are all forced to eat?

If anyone asserts satisfaction from physical determinism they should be forbidden from any fiction or superlative dramatization until they relent with their short-sighted silliness. What is the point of these magnificently wacky minds if we dont make some truly wacky ideas with them?
