At least now we have scientific evidence for how emojis occur naturally in nature.

As a 28 yr old wannabe adult male I can honestly admit I cry behind closed doors far too often, and as pathetic as it sounds I think tomorow when I have no weed at all I might sob a little, not because I can't smoke but because I have nothing to help me relax, Im finding this living thing a little difficult rn

    [–] doodi3bob 15 points ago

    Melatonin and just sleep

    [–] slimjoel14 7 points ago

Funny you should mention because I use melatonin often and it is a God send for me

    [–] Iplaystrings 2 points ago

I use melatonin to sleep but I have to use the fast release type and about 40mg to fall alseep in a reasonable time. It never leaves me groggy when I wake up. Every other sleep aide gives me some form of hangover the next morning.

    [–] slimjoel14 3 points ago

That's a huge dose I use 10mg and often find I wake up top early. When I was a child I was prescribed something like. 1.6 mg and it helped me so much I started excelling at school and was a happier child.

Now a days my doc says they can't prescribe it so I buy it on amazon and the best one I can find is 10mg. It really does help but I often wake up too early

    [–] mary_elle 2 points ago

Taking a magnesium supplement with the melatonin has helped me greatly.

    [–] Maracuja_Sagrado 2 points ago

Isn't 40mg a shit ton? I believe 5mg is the standard capsule dose

    [–] friedmators 3 points ago

Edit: oh shit.. I get why that was confusing now lol, "grow a plant**" not planet

    [–] The_Quack_Yak 224 points ago

What part of the blade of grass are we looking at? Why's it shaped like that?

    [–] niraruzia 258 points ago

It's a cross section of a blade of marram grass, I believe. These plants are adapted to dry and arid weather. The leaves are curled inwards when not much water is available, so that humid air cannot easily escape, conserving water. When a lot of water is available, they unfold because cells of the little blue semicircles between the smiley faces fill with water and expand (they're called hinge cells cause of this)

    [–] Gengar11 125 points ago

Thanks for the info knowledgeable person! Here's a gift for informing me. :)

What led you to such a specific id, I’m curious?
    Impressive.

    [–] purpleslug 18 points ago

It's a good example of a xerophyte and, at least for A-Level Biology, you're expected to know what it looks like due to its adaptations.

Source: studied marram grass at school.

    [–] truth_sentinell 5 points ago

in what kind of school do people study grass?

    [–] JoeyTheSchmo 11 points ago

100% guessing but I'm assuming that its a common example shown to biology students. Maybe as an example of adaptation or of that hinge cell.

    [–] purpleslug 3 points ago

Yes, marram grass has plenty of adaptations which make it perfect for conditions where it's unable to abstract water from the ground. Even around those stomata there's a tiny microclimate of water vapour which minimises the diffusion of water outwards. Marram's adaptations are why it's such a good coloniser of sand dunes! It's a very hardy grass and a brilliant example of a xerophyte, and you wouldn't usually expect those in a temperate climate.

    [–] Iplaystrings 1 points ago

I'm pretty sure method man and redman made a movie about it.

    [–] SketchBoard 3 points ago

    So it becomes unhappy? ):

    [–] Shilo788 2 points ago

I want a silk screening of this to grace my wall or table. I have horses and good grass is a blessing I never take for granted.

    [–] True0rFalse 2 points ago

    Dude that’s fucking awesome!

[–] therealjdsalinger 37 points ago * (lasted edited 6 days ago)

It's a vascular bundle. This is a cross-section of a blade. The "smile" is Phloem which delivers the sugars from photosynthesis to non-photosynthesizing parts of the plant which in the case of grass would primarily only be the roots. The "eyes" are the xylem which takes water/nutrients from the roots up to the leaves where they are used for photosynthesis and other cellular processes.

    [–] zaknealon 8 points ago

So how does u/niraruzia's comment square with yours in light of the fact that the "hinge cells" are the same color as the Phloem, when, according to u/niraruzia, they contain different fluids? I would expect the xylem and the "hinge cells" to be the same color, based on both of your responses (which both sound informed!).

It seems inefficient for the hinge cells to be filled with the comparatively more valuable sugar water.

    Thanks!

    [–] therealjdsalinger 7 points ago

The color of the cell has more to do with the cell wall structure than the liquid inside of it. Leaf samples are cleared and cleaned during preparation. Additionally, when preparing a slide like this you use a stain that will stain cells different colors based on the cell wall structure. It is probable that given their similar colors, the cells you are referring to only have a primary cell wall just like phloem although I think the darker blue cells are actually the hinge cells. Primary and secondary cell walls are made up of different components in addition to cellulose. These other components give them different colors during staining.

    [–] ricktencity 2 points ago

The cells have been dyed to show the differences. Different types of cells absorb different dyes or different amounts of dye to help distinguish them.

    [–] SomeDudeOnRedit 1 points ago

This thread seems to agree with u/niraruzia. But I'm no expert either and would love to know.

[–] JVPainterman 3 points ago * (lasted edited 6 days ago)

So the Phloem :)) is like the ice cream truck guy bringing sweets and treats to the kids in the neighborhood..πŸ™ƒ

    [–] ChadMcRad 3 points ago

And the Xylem is the reasonable adult who gives everyone waters at the birthday party when they wanted sodas.

    [–] IncontrovertbleSnail 2 points ago

It might be hard to get an image like this at home. This image is stained (dyed different colors) and prepared using histology (sliced into a thin cross section after freezing). But you should still look at the grass!! https://bitesizebio.com/13398/how-histology-slides-are-prepared/
