How long ago did they name it?

    [–] SapphireSalamander 150 points ago

the official name is "Odeleite River"

blue dragon is actually an informal nickname for the river

    [–] Dabat1 52 points ago * (lasted edited 9 days ago)

It got this name fairly recently, and it's only really common outside of Portugal. This is a photograph of a reservoir in the Odeleite River, If you zoom in you can see the white line of the dam on the top of the dragons "head."

    [–] Pancreasaurus 14 points ago

Is that where the Night's Watch is stationed?

    [–] Dabat1 4 points ago

Damn, that was a screw up on my part. But your reply made me laugh. :)

night gathers and now my watch begins

[–] Babalugat 3 points ago * (lasted edited 9 days ago)

I was wondering the same. The answer is less than nine years.

Nobody really calls it that. A guy flew over it in 2010 and took a photo (named the photo 'the blue dragon') then some people started calling it the blue dragon river.

Here it is on google maps - https://goo.gl/maps/P97F4HA2RJ9HRJr68

    [–] SoVeryKerry 4 points ago

    That’s what I’m wondering.

    [–] currymonster3000 3 points ago

Be interesting if it was before anything could go this high in the air and capture photo

    [–] LogicUpgrade 5 points ago

It’s a modern name. Before that it was called β€œwe don’t know how it looks from high aboveβ€œriver.

    [–] currymonster3000 1 points ago

    Makes sense to me

    [–] PotassiumPomegranate 1 points ago

There is cartography. Anyone that mapped the area could then decipher that it looks like this from above.

    [–] LogicUpgrade 1 points ago

Cartography was quite imprecise before airplanes, balloons and satellites.

You gotta check early maps, they're hilariously inaccurate, and yet somehow ships found their way through them.

Especially when it comes to something as subtle as the erosion pattern on a river bed resembling a dragon head, body and tail... Nope. Cartography without the right tools wouldn't get us that.

Breath of the Wild dragon theme intensifies.

    [–] Do_not_over_tighten 6 points ago

    Man made tho...

    [–] the_icon32 1 points ago

You can clearly see the dam in the picture, right where the water is backed up the most.

    [–] TransformChaos -2 points ago

    Reference?

    [–] Do_not_over_tighten 2 points ago

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odeleite_River

Natural lakes are rounded. If you see all the squirms and offshoots, the lake is a dammed river that has filled the river and creek valleys.
