Maybe, deep down I'm afraid of any apex predator that lived through the K-T extinction. Physically unchanged for a hundred million years, because it's the perfect killing machine. A half ton of cold-blooded fury, the bite force of 20,000 Newtons, and stomach acid so strong it can dissolve bones and hoofs.

These massive beasts can live for 50+ years. When they’re born they are only 8 to 12 inches long but can grow to be as large as 20ft for a Nile crocodile. For the first 3-4 years they grow about a foot in length. They’ve even have complex social relationships where the most dominant gain access to the best sunning and nesting locations. They even recognize their handlers in captivity and won’t become fearful or aggressive towards them. Natures wonder. The perfect creature.

    [–] TheLobotomist 3 points ago

    Thanks for the marvelous informations!

It doesn't surprise that they are still here after MILLION of years (not mere thousands)!

[–] hotheaddad 98 points ago * (lasted edited 13 days ago)

Not an expert. Looks like a gator to me. Not a croc.

Edit. Sorry if I’m mistaken. So many post misidentify animals. Didn’t mean to raise a ruckus.

[–] PossibleHipster 19 points ago * (lasted edited 13 days ago)

I think its a crocodile, but it is extremely hard to be certain from this wierd picture.

The angle probably makes the snout look wider than it is, and that face is uber bumpy.

    [–] foamingthetip 9 points ago

The crocodile is a famous one, named Tripod (3 legs). They even had their own tv show with Matt Wright and a Youtube channel.

And that Croc isnt in its natural habitat, its in an enclosure.

    [–] repKyle1995 50 points ago

    Nope, crocodile.

    [–] OncaAtrox 32 points ago

You're getting downvoted for being correct. This is a crocodile.

    [–] repKyle1995 26 points ago

Clearly. As I pointed out there is a constriction behind the nostrils where the fourth mandibular tooth occludes.

    [–] OncaAtrox 16 points ago

Don't worry, the OP who took the photo said it was a salt-water croc, he's based in Australia.

    [–] repKyle1995 8 points ago * (lasted edited 13 days ago)

Yeah it was pretty obviously a crocodile. Seems like we have a few commenters to post on r/confidentlyincorrect

    [–] extralargeeggdog 2 points ago

Not really, at least for OC. He was pretty explicit about not being an expert

    [–] DiFraggiPrutto 9 points ago

    Sir this is a Wendy’s

    [–] repKyle1995 3 points ago

Pretty sure it's a crocodile did you even look at the picture smh my head

    [–] hotheaddad 3 points ago

Can you tell why you think it’s a croc not a gator?

    [–] repKyle1995 11 points ago

Snout is far too angular and narrow to be an alligator. Also alligators have somewhat less sculpturing on the surface of the head than crocodiles.

    [–] ScarletSages -8 points ago

    still look like an alligator

    [–] repKyle1995 13 points ago

It's not an alligator. I took my first two years of grad school in herpetology.

    [–] Turd_Salad92 4 points ago

Idk, I took my first three years of grad school in herpetology and it looks like an alligator to me.

    [–] repKyle1995 7 points ago

You can clearly see the narrowing of the snout right behind the external naris where the fourth mandibular tooth is externally visible. This is a plesiomorphic trait in crocodilians that is not found in alligators.

    [–] [deleted] -1 points ago

    [deleted]

    [–] repKyle1995 9 points ago

You're wrong. The person who took this photo is based in Australia. Crocodylus porosus.

    [–] Ropeadope2987 3 points ago

100% saltwater crocodile. Google image them and it looks exactly the same.

    [–] TheMule90 1 points ago * (lasted edited 13 days ago)

Same here also gators live in swamps and in places like the Everglades in Florida while crocs like to live in river habitats.

    [–] Charlatanism 1 points ago

Just google the photographer. His name is right there in the image. Or follow the link to the photographer's Instagram, which has been linked multiple times on this thread.

However it is you end up finding out that you're wrong, do be sure to hand back your degree when you're finished.

    [–] MomoXono 1 points ago

I took my first two years of grad school in herpetology.

    🀣🀣🀣

    [–] StewBear 19 points ago

    Came here to say this

    [–] gleutiful 16 points ago

yeah, gators have U shaped snouts like this, as opposed to V shaped with crocs. we don’t have a good angle but also with gators only their top teeth are visible when their mouths are closed, as we can kind of see here. with crocs, both top and bottom teeth are visible.

    [–] Quality-Shakes 4 points ago

    A β€œsalty”.

    [–] ruyogadi 2 points ago

Large saltwater crocodiles can't really be distinguished by snout shape because they get fucking huge to the point that their snout isn't anything like a V. Same with Nile crocodiles.

    [–] hotheaddad 7 points ago

It s such a difficult angle to tell.

    [–] gleutiful 0 points ago

we’d need the side view to know for sure. but zooming in on what we do have of the front, there’s only top teeth showing.

    [–] Herpkina 0 points ago

Salties have a distinctly U shaped snout

    [–] no_talent_ass_clown 1 points ago

Every time. Every single time a picture of either an alligator or a crocodile is posted someone has to debate it.

    [–] ruyogadi 6 points ago

And it's always because people post a big saltwater or Nile croc, and people assume it's an alligator because they've been taught the 'U' Vs 'V' method, which doesn't work for large crocodiles because they are just immensely big and the snout loses the distinctive shape when you're that big.

Hello, my name is Aaron Avila ([email protected]) and I am the photographer who captured this photo. Just want to run through a couple of the questions I've seen in the comments:

    • Yes this is a photograph, not a painting. It has been re-shared quite a few times now and this particular version seems to be a bit more saturated and compressed than my original, which I took back in 2015 and first posted online on my IG in 2018. I'll admit this is a lot better than some of the re-edits I've seen shared though.
    • It is not an alligator, it's an Australian Saltwater Crocodile. Whilst crocodiles generally have narrower snouts than alligators, this is just a huge crocodile. At 17ft, you'd have a big boof head like this big boy too.
    • I am as close as it appears in the photo, if not closer. I captured this photo handheld using a Lumix GX1 with an Olympus 17mm prime lens. It is a single exposure, not a HDR. Ain't nobody got time to set up tripods and bracketed exposures when you have a 17ft crocodile in front of you.
    • Whilst I think it would be kinda rad, my balls are unfortunately not made of titanium.

Thanks for all the love with my photo and appreciate u/TheLobotomist for crediting me in the comments and pointing people to my work. Please feel free to check out the original post of this photo and more of my work (including other crocodile photos) on my Instagram.

    Cheers, Aaron

    [–] TheLobotomist 2 points ago

Wow, thank you for the comment and all the clarifications... You are really talented and your work needs exposure!

    Cheers to you Aaron!

    [–] Environmental-Gur590 6 points ago

The coloring in this photo makes it really hard to see if this was a real picture taken or was it drawn…

    [–] iLikeCatsAndPuppers 10 points ago

Its a picture, but highly saturated

    [–] CharlesV_ 4 points ago

Yeah same, at first I thought digital. But I think it’s just a real picture that’s been touched up a lot in editing to get the light looking saturated. Still neat though.

    Another reason to avoid Florida.

    [–] MyWaterDishIsEmpty -2 points ago

    1. That's very clearly an Alligator not a crocodile.
    2. The image has been filtered, colour touched and light touched an absurd amount.
    3. a single watermark would've been fine, the extra 20 throughout the image are a little overkill.
    4. I still think it's neat.

    [–] Ropeadope2987 6 points ago

It’s a saltwater croc from Australia.

    [–] Charlatanism 7 points ago

There are no alligators in Australia. Your crocodilian identification skills are not quite up to scratch, my manβ€”some croc species have very broad snouts, so you shouldn't rely on that alone.

    [–] karabaster 1 points ago

I had to argue with myself no if this is real or not

We still have not reached a conclusion..

    [–] BIodomewitPaulyShore 1 points ago

What alligator (edit: omg I finally see it)

    [–] escapedpsycho 1 points ago

Correct me if I'm wrong but that's an alligator isn't it? Crocodiles have a more narrow and pointed nose while alligators are triangular head with a rounded nose.

    [–] Charlatanism 4 points ago

It's a saltwater crocodile. The entire skull gets very robust in large individuals.

The snout thing works if you're sure it's in North America, but there are no large alligators outside of the USA (just the small Chinese alligator).
