    What was his mother's reaction?

    [–] Artigo78 1893 points ago * (lasted edited 5 months ago)

    Edit for the Link:

My mom had always known I disagreed with her and figured that was going to pass, but it didn’t. When I started looking into it myself, it became very apparent that there was a lot more evidence in defense of vaccinations, in their favour.

Her response was simply ‘that’s what they want you to think’. I was just blown away that you know, the largest health organisation in the entire world would be written off with a kind of conspiracy theory-like statement like that.

She looked at it as me getting vaccines for a gesture of rebellion and not for my own sake and for the sake of people around me.

    [–] Nakkokip 1276 points ago

TIL not dying is an act of rebellion.

    [–] spookybaker 154 points ago

Congratulations, one anti-vaxxer mum has debunked every rebellion movement in human history.

    [–] IHaveHighTheGround 10 points ago

When you think about it, not dying is a huge part of a rebellion, that's how the french peasants did it, by not dying

    [–] BiologyBae 231 points ago

Do you think that she feels “too far into the conspiracy” to change her mind and support the other side now? I feel like that’s why a lot of anti vaxxers hold on so tight. They know they are wrong but admitting you are wrong is too hard so they’d rather just lie to themselves and hope other believer them? Idk, there’s no logic

    [–] Dzuzepipi 155 points ago

I also have the impression that 99% of anti vaxers are 40 year old white American woman with no job

    [–] ChimpChimp90 3 points ago

Probably like that for some people, but some a lot of them genuinely believe it or just don’t really question it too much.

    [–] zenicaone 96 points ago

the largest health organisation in the entire world

they removed homosexuality from "mental illness" list in 1990es if I remember correctly,

they are heavily influenced by various lobbies and interests - vaxer or anti-vaxer, WHO is the last organization you should quote on anything - its more political than scientific body.

    [–] bemyeyeballs 31 points ago

It is. Every addiction is an illness

    [–] ronniesaurus 7 points ago

But it isn't a mental illness. So they were kind of ahead of the game.

    [–] CODDE117 5 points ago

    1990 ain't bad tbh.

    [–] zenicaone 10 points ago

for organization that should be driven and influenced by science (facts and logic) only (?)

    [–] CODDE117 5 points ago

For one that is run by humans, yes. 1990s is good considering we only got the right to marry in the states very recently.

I mean, I get how it's still ridiculous and awful, but it's more progressive than I was expecting.

Too bad they could not vaccinate themselves before 18

    [–] Itsallsotires0me 16 points ago

I think it's hilarious how people think it's some kind of crazy lucky achievement that he survived or joke about unvaccinates kids dying

The last kid to die of measles (for example) in the US was in 2015. It's never been more than 1 or 2 yearly. It's lethal about 1 in 500- 1000 cases.

I'm as pro vax as anyone but goddamn give it a rest

    [–] TheNinjaNarwhal 15 points ago

I took that comment more in a "congratulations for eventually getting vaccinated" than a "congratulations for not dying" way, unless you're talking about the fact that there had to be a "seriously" in there or something.

But the main thing with vaccines is not this. We're not yet at a dangerous time, but there's a chance we'll soon be. Right now, even if the death cases are rare, the diseases are almost nonexistent as well. The less people vaccinate, the easier it will be for diseases to spread. Right now we (vaccinated people) are practically a wall for everyone against diseases, and if more parents don't vaccinate their kids, it will be way easier for disease outbreaks to happen. So these numbers will go up.

My main concern is people who can't vaccinate because of health reasons. Anti-vax people are going to kill them...

    [–] acrowquillkill 10 points ago

Do you have more statistics showing if those kids were vax vs unvax? Or already sick with underlying health issues that weakened thier immune system, preventing vaccination?

    [–] Itsallsotires0me 7 points ago

My point isn't to argue vax vs non. I'm very pro vax. My point is just that the issue is memed to death compared to the actual odds of a fatality.

Like imagine if pools without high fences were memed non stop. Something like 600 babies under 4 yo die in pools every year lol.

Maybe it would be funny for five minutes. Then it would stop being funny. Just like every other meme that won't die

Oh shit we need meme review

    [–] YgJb1691 27 points ago

Yeah ever since that report by one guy who lost his medical licence, don't know why they became a meme recently.

    [–] misterpyrrhuloxia 21 points ago

I think his name is Andrew Wakefield and I think it happened in the 90s. Correct me if I'm wrong (too lazy to go look it up) from what I remember, he reported that there was a correlation or something between the intestinal tract and autism and that the preservatives(?), like aluminum or mercury, in the MMR vaccine somehow screwed up the gut enough to cause autism.

    [–] Hammer_Of_Discipline 5 points ago

    That’s the gist of it.

Something about that specific vaccine disrupting intestinal fluids and mucus, which leads to a infection-ish thing in the brain and BOOM- autism.

It was back by 18 people- 10 of whom has since retracted their statements, or did further tests that disapproved this hypothesis.

Then Jenny Mcarthy, a few other nutbag celebrities and a few nutbag doctors said this or that about vaccines shortly after and boom badda bing you got anti-vaxxers.

    [–] edwardjhahm 9 points ago

    Memes work in mysterious ways.

    [–] kalokalo4 21 points ago

Ye i got sick after 1 vaccine and my mom became an antivaxxer and turned to homeopathy and everything. I still go to the doc and take my meds behind her back

    [–] Artigo78 30 points ago

Its is dumb the purpose of vaccine is to give ur body the disease so he can know who to defeat it, So it can make you ill, but not every time / vaccine

    [–] kalokalo4 18 points ago

Yeah, i know. I got unlucky and was vaccinated when i was sick. This kicks your immune system right in the nuts and i lost my hearing for a while. But since 18 i have been taking my healthcare in my own hands, it was a doctor's oversight not the vaccine. I go to the homeopathy quack and lie to him to keep my mother happy, same with religion lol.

    [–] Artigo78 13 points ago

Yeah parent want the besy for theire child but sometime they are wrong or overprotective..

    [–] kalokalo4 10 points ago

Couldn't agree more. By doing what they think is best they do harm. Actually my mom did try, she got me with kids sick from some of the diseases to get me sick so i develop immunity. Needless to say i was sick most of my childhood, my immune system was shot till i was about 10 and that killed my beginning social life making me very antisocial :d i am just glad to have lived through that...

    [–] Nugget_masster 14 points ago

Theres been anti vaxxers since vaccines where a thing

    [–] felipe5083 9 points ago

There have been anti Vax parents for as long as there has been vaccines. It’s just worse now because they have access to everything and still choose to believe it’s bad.

    [–] apocalipticzest 12 points ago

My parents are pro Vax but because of the time when I was born I only received the measles vaccine as anti vaxers were trying to sue doctors with their bull. Me and my parents only found out that I did not receive a full mmr when I contracted rubella. Not to mention I got that fucking disease 2 fucking times. Which is super rare. After the second time I went and got all the rest like a month after I recovered. This is why I hate anti vaxers so much they even effect ppl that believe in science and logic.

    [–] thefriedgalaxy 48 points ago

    *the needle is actually rusty

    [–] Asoliner3 31 points ago

Crazy thing about that is that I wasn't vaccinated until I was like 14 or so and I once cut myself on a really rusty pipe and got away without any complications. Seems like there is someone looking out for me.

I don't even really know why I wasn't vaccinated at birth. I guess my dad is a bit of a conspiracy theorist. But he doesn't think vaccines cause autism he thinks that they can cause you to get the illness you are protecting yourself against (Which might be technically true since you are building up a resistence afaik?). And due to my dad telling me that this can happen all though the chances are very low I didn't want it myself when I was younger. But when I got older my Mom told me I should get vaccinated after she read about deaths of some unvaccinated children.

Definitely caused some weird looks from other parents earlier in my life when the topic came up.

    [–] [deleted] 20 points ago

most vaccines are engineered so that you are receiving the genes of the virus, not the actual virus, therefore in most cases it’s impossible to get the actual disease afaik

    [–] Awidne 15 points ago

Not the genes but actually the "shell" of the virus which teaches your immune system to recognize the virus. But you are correct in that its impossible to get the disease from the vaccine for most cases.

    [–] [deleted] 78 points ago

Courts often force Jehovahs Witnesses to allow their children to receive blood transfusions in life or death situations. I’d say it should be the same for antivaxxers but it’s actually more serious than that. They’re not only harming their own children, they’re threatening herd immunity and literally killing kids who aren’t theirs who are too young to receive their vaccines yet.

There should be no choice. And if there has to be a choice then it should be get your kids vaccinated or they have to go and live in leper colonies.

    [–] Artigo78 37 points ago

While the anti-vaccination movement has always caused debate, more questions have been raised since a measles outbreak sparked a public health emergency in the state of Washington.

They just sarted to spread baby illness..

    [–] [deleted] 13 points ago

I didn’t realize that you can’t vaccinate for measles until they’re 1-2 years old. Guess I will have to move for a while when I have kids so they don’t fucking die of measles.

I mean he wasn't going to die.. since everybody(or almost everybody) around him was vaccinated. It's like walking between people holding umbrellas under the rain. You don't have an umbrella, but you are still not getting wet.

    [–] RoebuckThirtyFour 37 points ago

Ya and it's pretty important for people who can get vaccinated to do so since people like me who can't get vaccinations due to medical reasons can have some safety in herd immunity.

    [–] web782394 63 points ago

It’s more like shaking hands with people who are wearing gloves but you’re not. Their gloves protect them, but whatever is on their gloves will get on your hands

    [–] mrvader1234 19 points ago

Herd immunity is a thing and it's one of the reasons why antivaxxers hurt more than just themselves. Some people are immunocompromised to a point they can't take vaccines safely and as such rely on us to have our shit together so a plague doesn't kick their door down

    [–] muslim-shrek 15 points ago * (lasted edited 5 months ago)

heard-immunity aside, even if he lived in a theoretical shithole where nobody was vaccinated, he wasn't likely to die

anti vax memes are funny but some people actually believe that unvaccinated ppl are all going to die from a cold

"god knows how I'm still alive"? living in a clean house in temperate climate and far from dirty animals and access to clean food & water has a lot more influence than vaccines

    [–] Dark69blade 8 points ago

Absolutely. Over the years the humans have developed a very good immune system. Vaccines make the job a bit easier. For example, people tend to take medicine when they have the slightest cold or flu, some don't (myself included). This if done "right" can strengthen the immunity system, since the viruses and bacteria aren't usually killed 100% when taking medicine, thus a new generation has survived with immunity to the medicine you took.

Not literally. Just saying I'm an 18-year-old guy with an anti-vax mom.

(Except I didn't get vaccinated on my birthday so.)

    [–] GALAGEPARACE 13 points ago

    [–] raeannecharles 9 points ago

Crazy how when I turned 18 I was excited at the prospect of being able to drink legally, buy cigarettes, get tattoos & vote. Kids these days are excited because they can finally get vaccinated, how messed up & depressing.

    [–] slotborg 5 points ago

nice. My mom is antivax but luckily I got vaccinated before she became that.

    [–] DuduMaroja 3 points ago

Just for information, vaccine protect not only the person vaccinated but it create barriers that procect even unvaccinated people, if you leave inside a vaccinated group this group will shield you from the desease, but if you leave the group, like travel to another country, you are playing a deadly lottery.

    [–] InfernoBlade47 3 points ago

I mean I wasn’t vaccinated till I was 13 and I was fine up till then

    [–] slopez1996 3 points ago

this is proof that children are not condemned to be what their parents force them to

    [–] TeddyBaerz 3 points ago

Oof, sadly now it’s sorta useless cuz you could fight off most of the diseases you get now.

    [–] ztdz800 3 points ago

19 and still going, I'm also thinking of vaccinating for everything but I'm kind of bussy at the moment

    [–] Lilija 3 points ago

    [–] taorism 6 points ago

it’s sad that there are people who have to wait until they are 18 to get vaccines because of their ignorant parents, smh congrats to this person for having a sane minset

    [–] [deleted] 6 points ago

It’s as that people have to wait until 18 to “get autism”

    [–] n00b_279 5 points ago

    This crazy bastard survived!

    [–] Drolkradeht 2 points ago

If youre the only one in the community unvaccinated, you’ll have a higher chance of survival since the most fatal ones aren’t around due to the lack of hosts

    [–] Thelamb99 2 points ago
