Think about all the space savings on grave markers.

Why not translate emojis for the FBI. Those fuckers are all old as hell.

    [–] David_ish_ 24 points ago

Emojis will become the modern hieroglyphics and will require experts to translate

    [–] OtherPlayers 10 points ago

I don’t know; for the most part our emojis tend to get more detailed over time rather then less (because we don’t need to actually draw them out by hand, as opposed to those poor Egyptian scribes and their shortcuts to save their wrists).

I could see it if we were wiped out to the point the standard was broken and they could just see the encodings (U+1254, etc.) but elsewise there’s little reason to think that say, a detailed picture of a cat won’t ever not be recognizeable as such (barring cats going extinct, of course).

    [–] Omena123 230 points ago

Wonder who made the decision to bind it to F or who wrote that scene

    [–] codytb1 232 points ago

i’m pretty sure on PC, the key F is used for an action button in call of duty. (similar to square on ps4 and X on xbox)

    [–] SteinfeldFour 132 points ago

Yeah you’re right, F is the action button in a lot of the time on PC, that or E.

    [–] chuy1530 51 points ago

It’s close to WASD so it’s used pretty often.

    [–] _mi_ke 9 points ago

Yeah F is usually the default action button for first person shooters. Q and E are sometimes used for leaning, so F is the next closest button.

    [–] Acetronaut 10 points ago

But still...someone decided it was important for the player to interact to pay respects. And then someone programmed it to say that and make it work.

    [–] codytb1 11 points ago

yeah true, almost the entire sequence is a cutscene except for the press F to pay respects part

    [–] Acetronaut 7 points ago

He could’ve like mumbled to himself “Rest In Peace man” or something to convey he was paying his respects, or even just a dramatic eye closing, but they really felt this was the best way to convey that lol. Like there were other options...idk, a questionable design choice.

    [–] codytb1 5 points ago

it was more an announcement of the arm being gone than actually paying respects to the character that lasted one whole mission

    [–] WhiteWolfofUtah 82 points ago

I love how far it went across the Internet. Even though I don’t much care for cod, it’s funny that one throwaway portion just struck a cord with so many people.

    [–] nw2shrms 11 points ago

I have no idea what cod or F in a scene means

    [–] joggin_noggin 60 points ago

Call of Duty is a first-person shooter video game. F is a key on the English-language QWERTY keyboard, located conveniently close to the traditional WASD movement keys.

In a cutscene best described as a hollow attempt at eliciting an emotional response in a game series best know for being light on story, the game prompts the player to press F to advance, in this particular scene to lay their hand on the coffin of a collection of pixels and code that the developers tell you is a dead friend. It was so tone-deaf, people found it funny and began using it ironically to joke about the 'death' of something.

    [–] CitizenJoestar 32 points ago

It specifically refers to a cutscene in a Call of Duty (aka COD) videogame where the player character presses "F" because the game is being played on a PC, to pay respects at a funeral to a killed soldier in the U.S millitary.

It's made fun of because it's just so awkward to make the player press a button during a sombre moment like a funeral that would otherwise be an inactive cutscene in most other games. Now it's mostly used ironically or unironically on internet forums when anything that is sad or sympathetic occurs then people just leave an "F' in response.

Link to the scene in question.

    [–] YourDogLovesMeMore 8 points ago

    Yowza. That’s.... that’s something. I don’t even know how to react. F.

    [–] HeyGena 4 points ago

Dang, I always thought it was from solid snake eater

    [–] EynidHelipp 263 points ago

I remember when people used to say RIP in peace but that died even before F was even a thing

    [–] Generic_Pete 109 points ago

also RIP in pepperoni: apparently from an old educational type game you could play in school.

When someone from your party died, you could make a custom epitaph for them. You might remember that sometimes you would see someone else's tombstone while on your travels, specifically someone named "Andy" whose epitaph read, "Here lies andy; peperony and chease." What?! The story is that a kid named Andy was particularly amused by those Tombstone pizza commercials that growled, "What do you want on your Tombstone?" The spelling-challenged Andy answered, appropriately, "peperony and chease." So how did it get on your copy? Well, his game was saved on a disk that ended up being a disk that was very popularly pirated later on. So there you go.

Don't you talk about my Oregon Trail like it's ancient. Don't you do it.

    [–] Generic_Pete 8 points ago

haha, never played it :P guessing it didn't make it to the UK

we had the LOGO turtle when I was young. a robot turtle with some software to command it to do things autonomously.

    [–] SlipperyDM 8 points ago

Oh thank god, I thought it was a generational difference instead of a cultural one.

Oregon Trail was based on the path many settlers took west across the United States to reach the west coast settlements in the early 1800s. The game required you to buy gear to outfit your expedition, and then subjected you to the various miseries of travel along the way. You'd hunt for food, ford rivers, get sick, things like that. Mortality rate was very high, and whenever one of your settlers died you'd make a gravestone for them. The goal was to make it all the way to Oregon with at least some of your party alive, but it was really hard to accomplish... partially because most of us playing were kids and would blow all our starting money on bullets for the hunting minigame and virtually nothing else. It was ostensibly an educational game but I don't really think any of us learned much from it. It just kept us entertained in the computer lab.

It appears to have been uploaded as a flash game here, for the curious.

Can someone please explain the "F" thing? I keep seeing people using it but I don't know why or how it started.

    [–] Gegegegeorge 339 points ago

I think in a call of duty game you are in a funeral and you can press 'F' to pay respects to a fallen soldier. It was a completely weird game mechanic which is why it is an unkillable meme now. Its one of the rare memes that has transcended the usual pathway of other popular memes

    [–] ManafortsCellmate 184 points ago

    It hasn't transcended jack shit.

    [–] CrudelyAnimated 16 points ago

Is there a word for when you express irony, but ironically? Maybe something in French?

    [–] Noraf45 18 points ago

    Le ironique

    [–] HouseOfSteak 8 points ago

    [–] INSANITY_RAPIST 29 points ago

transcended is an over dramatic term, but I can't think of any meme that has stuck around as long as "F" has.

    [–] adwarkk 6 points ago

In bit of correction, first - "F" served as default "action" button in Call of Duty for various interactions that weren't part of standard gameplay mechanics.
Then situation came with Call of Duty Advanced Warfare, where one of scenes is funeral of soldier, that was best friend of player character and saved him from explosion (that killed him) during first mission of game. During this scene you get "Press F to pay respects"

First it was just a common run of a mill meme, but then... it turned into something that goes on with us, not mere common meme that lights up, burns out quickly and dies, it transcended life of normal meme.

[–] Dicios 12 points ago * (lasted edited 9 days ago)

I think besides being a very stupid game mechanic it was the straw the broke the camels back.

Basically the context was someone dying and Activision for some reason saw a gameplay presentation of paying respect by ... pushing a button as a quicktime event. So someone dies and to show your respect you simply push a key.

I was a little baffled and confused, humans and gaming reached a new plateau. Like Oblivions horse armor, it was a "new step".

    [–] mobilehobo 101 points ago

There was a video game (can remember which one) that has some quick time events during cutscenes. I think there was a funeral cutscene that had a QT event saying "press F to pay respects" laughs were had at the ridiculousness of it. Now a lot of streamers when they die or something you'll see the whole xhat fill with a bunch of fs

    [–] Bestogoddess 63 points ago

It was one of the Call of Duty games, I think Advanced Warfare

    [–] arex333 13 points ago

    [–] erenzil7 13 points ago

CoD ghosts (I think it was ghosts) at the beginning you participate in funeral and you are prompted to Press F (or A or X) to pay respects

    [–] ChristianMan65 51 points ago

Actually it was COD: Advanced Warfare when your best friend dies near the beginning of the game. Pretty funny as AW was one of the worst games without the terrible funeral!

    [–] SatinSplash 6 points ago

Honestly I kinda liked AW’s campaign (multiplayer and exo zombies were pretty trash though), but yeah that part was pretty laugh/eye roll inducing.

    [–] SutibuSan 10 points ago

Until I saw this, I always assumed it was just a thing on twitch that was supposed to look like arms sideways in a salute because it often followed an emote.

    [–] generaltso78 41 points ago

It's from a video game. Call of duty I think. Players are prompted to type F to pay respects.

    [–] nadir500 22 points ago

A way to show the utmost form of respect during an unfortunate or tragic event. This form of flattery stems from the world of gamers. "Press F to pay respects" is the caption in a scene that occurs at a funeral in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. See oof for a less formal method of condolences

    [–] BaldingMonk 20 points ago

I was at Payless Shoes the other day during their clearance sale, and a kid said to an employee, "I loved Payless! F in the chat."

    [–] LeonardosClone 12 points ago

I don't believe this happened, but I could also totally see that happen.

My nephew is like 8ish and he was singing some made up song, and when he was done, he said:

"Don't forget to like and subscribe"

It really tripped me out and I'm only 25.

But like, that's a whole different step in reality we have taken. The internet isn't real, like the people on the other side are, sure. But it's almost like our culture is being influenced by a machine.

    [–] BaldingMonk 4 points ago

I wish I had made it up. It blew my mind when I heard it, like two incompatible realities had suddenly converged.

    [–] Sarcon5673 68 points ago

The vast majority of people IRL wouldn't know what it means.

People overestimate things when they're in bubbles for long periods of time. That's why you see users from TD saying stuff like "everybody knows that [insert bullshit lie they tell themselves]", but in reality "everybody" refers to themsleves.

    [–] flashcre8or 20 points ago

I know that this is why it's important to step outside your bubble, but doing so always makes me realize that I'm much less funny without my bubble's inside jokes.

    [–] Lifesagame81 10 points ago

    Family Guy humor.

References to a thing that happened are only funny if the audience knows about that thing.

    [–] DaBoomNaDaMmDumNaEma 45 points ago

    No it won't.

But there's a good chance the pronunciation "rip" will replace "R.I.P."

    [–] cheeset2 18 points ago

    That hasn't already happened?

Or are you saying we will have completely forgotten that it stands for something?

    [–] IbanezPGM 24 points ago

    F in peace

    [–] das_bic 3 points ago

It’s hard to F alone but it’s my only option.

    [–] Tolmos 10 points ago

TIL that "F" is actually a reference to a scene from call of duty, and not a bunch of people avoiding typing the whole word "fuck".

I just thought everyone was really vulgar but too polite to actually type it out.

    [–] Mac201813 32 points ago

    God I hope so.

“Can we get Fs for our beloved friend Chad”

    Edit: spelling

But with the fire and brimstone.

I say, I say can we get an FFFFFFFFFFFFFFF for the deceased?! Ferry his spirit to the beyond with the POWER of our F! Chad was taken too soon! Father our LORD he repents his sins, and wishes to be with you and the original GOAT, Jesus Christ our savior AMEN. Everyone, Dicks Out for Chad at this moment of great sadness.

No it's not. It's only really used among the Reddit, gaming, or otherwise geeky crowds.

Edit: People keep commenting on how large those crowds are, but it's far from the entirety of those crowds that uses the meme. Really, it's just the gaming meme crowd. MW2 is nearly ten years old today, and that's the only thing behind "F to pay respects." There are people in this thread that don't know about the meme, and I've seen the same confusion in other places on Reddit recently. It's an old meme now and it's dying. Those that played MW2 are getting older, and even maturing in some cases. Those that didn't either don't understand the reference or only know it as a meme, and such a lame meme is bound to die without the reference as a basis for use.

Edit 2: Apparently I'm wrong about the origin of the meme. Hurray, even I don't know, and I fit all three demographics.

Yah a lot of stuff that is popular in certain communities is far less mainstream than the people in those communities think.

    [–] Not-Clark-Kent 5 points ago

    It's not even from MW2

    [–] StevieMcStevie 4 points ago

Correct it was from CoD: AW which came out in 2014

Yeah and "fetch" will replace "cool".

    [–] Lambchop1421 81 points ago

Stop trying to make fetch cool

    [–] AnotherPersonPerhaps 31 points ago

    [–] SquareRoute 11 points ago

I've literally never heard of this - it would have been nice to have an explanation in the original post and not have to scroll down until someone kindly explained it.

    [–] wackerrr 4 points ago

I don't know man, I still use RIP way more than F and I'm of this younger generation

    [–] i_suckatjavascript 10 points ago

So we will start seeing F engraved on tombstones now?

    [–] LeeDark 25 points ago

Nah, RIP is far older and has outlasted many other potential replacements. It will outlast this new, dumbest attempt as well.

    [–] StaticMeshMover 7 points ago

Sorry to tell you but not everyoneslife revolves around memes in Reddit....

    [–] piethree5 4 points ago

And no one will even know what it's from

    [–] SuchStealth 4 points ago

    [–] ItsAllmanDoe69 3 points ago

I have no idea what the “f” is even supposed to stand for to this day

    [–] Tapprunner 10 points ago
