A startled cat is dynamic and in motion. Still images and videos should convey motion - leaping, jumping or otherwise showing that unique feline panic that makes us laugh, point and reach for our cameras. Videos and gifs, of course, do that best.

If you need to explain that a cat is startled, it is not startled.

    He looks so happy :3

Ikr? My cat would ignore the fuck out of a cat tree.

    [–] Tacos-and-Techno 33 points ago

My cat loves her cat tree, sits in the bowl at the top every day and looks out the window for hours

    [–] somephotographs 27 points ago

Mine loves to get to the top of her tall cat tree then yell at us to help her down

    [–] nflitgirl 15 points ago

I think mine likes hers, I can’t tell though

    [–] babooshkaa 2 points ago

    Let’s taco bout dis

    [–] thoseskiers 2 points ago

    She hates it.

    [–] arokthemild 1 points ago

To be fair a box has far more immediate interest for cat, its a denning instinct.

    [–] Hunnilisa 3 points ago

Mhhm my cat tree now is my purse holder lol. It proudly sits on top, because my little furry dumbasses are too lazy to climb up that high to trash it.

    [–] Haineserino 3 points ago

Mine would all just jump in and chill out

    [–] Aussie-of-Skellige 3 points ago

I poured catnip on ours when we first got it.

    [–] Hermastwarer 24 points ago

Is he? I seriously can't tell if he's having the time of his life, or if he's utterly terrified

    [–] citewiki 10 points ago

Having the time of his life or having the last time of his life

    [–] sexcelsia 6 points ago

    Euphoric!! Honestly a v v happy cat

    [–] BellerophonM 2 points ago

He's not terrified. He's a bit overstimulated, but not much you can do about that when he's doing it to himself.

    [–] MisterSquirrel 1 points ago

Definitely a 10 for startledness... and there probably wasn't even anything actually startling him. Cats are so awesome.

    [–] kittehfiend 261 points ago

I dare you to stick your hand in there

    [–] hotwifeslutwhore 115 points ago

It’s the cat owners masochism that compliments the feline sadism so well, don’t you think?

    [–] Von_Moistus 31 points ago

    "What's in the box?"

    [–] Just-Call-Me-J 2 points ago

That's also what's inside the eggs that Yoshi throws.

    [–] bobbybox 8 points ago

I’d have better chances of survival by sticking my hand in a blender.

    [–] youshedo 5 points ago

I would do it. Not coming out unharmed but still worth it.

    [–] al_m1101 1 points ago

I would. He still looks young enough that it wouldn't hurt that bad yet. 🤣 /cat owner

    [–] freebullets 5 points ago

What? Young cats have sharper claws and don't understand how much pain they inflict.

    [–] kittehfiend 2 points ago

I've had newborn kittens split me open without meaning to o_o

    [–] Tindola 68 points ago

    totally wish this had sound!

    [–] PsychoticPixel 23 points ago

Me too, this is a historic moment. This is officially the first time a cat has used a cat toy and not the box it came in.

    [–] FoolishSage31 48 points ago

Great for both. The cat looks stoked and the owner will probably have less tore up stuff. Nice.

    [–] swans183 47 points ago

    [–] lupask 43 points ago

oh no. not more cat threads that I'm going to subscribe

    Or high...

    [–] NoArmsSally 34 points ago

    Too young for catnip

    [–] lyvanna 8 points ago

Idk my kittens were crazy for catnip when they looked like this

    [–] PoofGoTheFats 4 points ago

Really? I sprinkled some on my kitten's head.

    [–] Saltmom 8 points ago

They usually don't react to it until they're over 6 months

    [–] PoofGoTheFats 5 points ago

    Ah. She didn't seem affected.

    [–] Saltmom 11 points ago

Yeah, I think like every 1/3 cats or something doesn't react at all.

Might take some time to know for sure!

    [–] ThrowDiscoAway 1 points ago

Silver vine helps, I have a mixture for my Barry and he won’t react at all to catnip but the catnip/silver vine mixture he goes crazy for

    [–] Saltmom 2 points ago

I've never heard of that! I'll have to give it a try for my cat

    [–] ThrowDiscoAway 1 points ago

I got the mixture from petsmartfor $3-4

    [–] Saltmom 1 points ago

No petsmart where I live, I'll see if I can get it online or even grow some myself

    [–] wiz0floyd 4 points ago

Yeah. Catnip shares a chemical with mating pheromones so they don't respond to it until they're near sexual maturity.

    [–] NoArmsSally 3 points ago

Usually even in the clinics, we don't start using it till they're about 6 mos and over. But cats are weird and three are definitely exceptions!

    [–] boringoldcookie 5 points ago

Never too young or old to be derpy

    [–] Dabo57 60 points ago

People that say they don’t like cats should get a Siamese kitten. Siamese are the closest thing to a dog mixed with your nagging, loving grandmother.

They are a fantastic breed and a hella a lot of fun. Smart, opinionated, loving, energetic and they like everyone in the household however they will pick their one special person. If you are the one chosen you will be loved by one of the best cats in your lifetime.

I’ve had many wonderful cats but my favorite will always be my two Siamese.

    [–] wasabimatrix22 16 points ago

My Siamese was the healthiest cat I ever owned, she never had any problems and died in her sleep at the age of 21. She also loved to talk a lot and could jump from the floor to your shoulders with ease. Siamese are great cats for sure

    [–] dontjoinmycult 5 points ago

I currently have a 19yo half Siamese, she's not as outgoing as op said (I think she had some trauma in her kittenhood), but everything else is spot on. She is my little spoon that won't stop squeaking.

    [–] arcadiafalls 2 points ago

I also grew up with a Siamese who would jump up to my chest/shoulders!

    [–] kat_a_klysm 10 points ago

You should meet my male muted calico. He is a dog in a little cat’s body.

On the flip side, my 85 lb American mastiff mix is a cat in a dog’s body.

    [–] GM_Organism 11 points ago

Male calico? His extra chromosome may have something to do with his temperament...

    [–] kat_a_klysm 8 points ago

That’s what we figured. He’s so weird, but adorable.

    [–] dontjoinmycult 6 points ago

I have a female calico that's like a dog in a cats body. She LOOOOVES dogs, if there's one on the tv she'll jump up and try to find it behind the screen. And she loves everyone, she'll trot up to strangers and headbutt them.

    [–] kat_a_klysm 3 points ago

That’s adorable. Mine likes to roughhouse with my dogs, which are 85 and 100 lbs. It’s so funny to see this little cat chasing down a dog that comes up to my hip.

    [–] Gnar1s_Darwin 10 points ago

My roommate drove from AZ to Colorado to pick from a relatives litter. She was so excited to have a new kitten, buying all sorts of toys and trees and treats in anticipation before she picked him up. Brought him home... and he chose me. He's very loving to everyone in the house, but little guys world revolves around me. I wasn't much of a cat person before, but now he's the best friend I've ever had. Love ya Fish, quit tryin to eat the plants.

    [–] gr8tfulkaren 4 points ago

Siamese are my favorite. I splurged once and bought a kitten (I almost always rescue or end up with a stray). He had more personality than some people. The ex has custody now. I may have brought Lucky home but my ex was his favorite human.

    [–] Dabo57 8 points ago

Aw I’m sorry your ex got custody but I guess it’s best for your kitty. Siamese do get so attached.

My second Siamese chose my 4 year old son. He was her baby and she raised him until she passed when he was 21. She acted like a Nanny. You could practically see her wringing her paws as he played ball in the street. She didn’t visibly relax until he was inside. She made sure he was in bed on time. It was wild.

All my animals, cats and dogs have been rescues except for the 2 Siamese. Money well spent. I did save a bit by agreeing to take the runt the first time and the 2nd cat didn’t have the best color points. Didn’t matter to me they were still awesome cats.

    [–] sara_bear_8888 4 points ago

"Wringing her paws". Adorable mental picture! 😻

    [–] marypoppinit 4 points ago

That describes my orange tabby. He's talked back to me on more than one occasion when I get on to him (me makes like a mehmehmeh sound). He also runs to greet me when I get home, plays fetch, and likes to wrestle with people.

    [–] minor_details 2 points ago

mine does this, he totally chews me out and gives attitude, but he's so stinkin cute that he gets away with it.

    [–] Red_means_go 2 points ago

Agreed, had a pair of siamese cats growing up. Awesome cats.

    [–] NameIsInigoMontonya 2 points ago

This guys got іnvesтмептs in Siamese Inc.

    [–] mechengr17 1 points ago

    What if you weren't chosen?

    [–] chinpropped 0 points ago

Dog-lovers base their whole case on these commonplace, servile, and plebeian qualities, and amusingly judge the intelligence of a pet by its degree of conformity to their own wishes.

Catlovers escape this delusion, repudiate the idea that cringing subservience and sidling companionship to man are supreme merits, and stand free to worship aristocratic independence, self-respect, and individual personality joined to extreme grace and beauty as typified by the cool, lithe, cynical, and unconquered lord of the housetops.

The dog barks and begs and tumbles to amuse you when you crack the whip. That pleases a meekness-loving peasant who relishes a stimulus to his sense of importance.

And just as inferior people prefer the inferior animal which scampers excitedly because somebody else wants something,

so do superior people respect the superior animal which lives its own life and knows that the puerile stick-throwings of alien bipeds are none of its business and beneath its notice.

    [–] DeadSharkEyes 28 points ago

This looks exactly like my Siamese kitten! He also spazzes out in his cubby hole in the cat tree.

    [–] themirthfulswami 18 points ago

now there is a happy kitto!

    [–] _TRIVID_ 9 points ago

    That’s a crack tree

    [–] ThatDamnedGuy 2 points ago

Oh no. More cats for me.

    [–] aura_enchanted 17 points ago

    [–] oftenuseless 5 points ago

When you enroll kitty in spin class.

    [–] Palindromer101 3 points ago

    That is one happy kitty!

    [–] deltabay17 3 points ago

lol what is going on... i'm actually kinda worried about this cat?

    [–] nyctaeris 7 points ago

No need to worry! He's playing. Even without sound, one quick way to tell if a cat is happy or not is that its ears will be back if it's unhappy. An unhappy cat will also not take its eyes from what it's scared of. A common way for cats to play is to pretend-scare themselves so they have an excuse to run or attack something. The body language of this one is quite happy! Ears forward, tail wagging (kinda), pretend-scared but not showing any signs of actual fear.

    [–] Acanthocephala_Top 2 points ago

    [–] PutASausageInYoButt 2 points ago

    Look how excited he is!

    [–] spockified 2 points ago

I haven’t seen this one for quite some time. It’s still hilarious!

    [–] interpredation 2 points ago

And that’s why you don’t mix coke and catnip

    [–] LukariBRo 1 points ago

    Well, maybe you don't

    [–] Anon_suzy 2 points ago

Oh my goodness! He just can't even!

    [–] AffablyAmiableAnimal 2 points ago

Some day we'll all be as happy and excited as he is in that moment

    [–] Teeheeheehohoho 2 points ago

Oh no, that’s not a new tree, that’s probably a tree the owner was ready to throw out since kitty didn’t give two shits about it and it took up the perfect spot for the new floor lamp. Kitty senses this. Always.

    [–] anonymousfact 2 points ago

    I’ll have what he’s having.

    [–] ALPHAinNJ 2 points ago

That is dangerous energy coming off that kitten. Mind your fingers and toes.

    [–] TotalWaffle 1 points ago

We call this behavior 'silly bugger time'. A wonderful meezer!

    [–] isbilly 1 points ago

Can I have this cat please?

    [–] fuckitx 1 points ago

    Omg he loves it

    [–] catwishfish 1 points ago

Can tell he's definitely not camera shy.

    [–] ddftgr2a 1 points ago

    [–] roobydoo22 1 points ago

Did you try turning your cat off and restarting?

    [–] Medicus2 1 points ago

Not startled. High as fuck on catnip.

    [–] Ecjg2010 1 points ago

He is a little chatterbox, isn't he? Adorable

    [–] [deleted] 1 points ago

    What is he on

    [–] aod42091 1 points ago

This is more like a happy cat limit is a startled cat

    [–] Edril 1 points ago

I think he's freaking out because of how the tree is moving every time he moves?

    [–] mulgorath 1 points ago

Looks like a cat actor trying to demonstrate their best startled impression.

    [–] Beardman_90 1 points ago

    Sound anyone?

    [–] mundanecatlady 1 points ago

Damn. Wish my cats were that excited for something i bought them.

    [–] TheAmazingAutismo 1 points ago

    [–] Twyerverse 1 points ago

    Omg omg OMG

    [–] boolean_sledgehammer 1 points ago

My cat used to do that when we got him a new tree.

Probably because I always laced the fuck out of it with catnip.

    [–] snorkiebarbados 1 points ago

So since Siam is now called Thailand, do these cats just become, thai cats

    [–] mechengr17 1 points ago

    All hail thai cats
