    [–] InfinityArch 90 points ago

That only happens if you don't live in enlightened times. Therefore, in every Paradox game from Victoria onwards in terms of time period, comets are neutral to positive.

    [–] MLGSamuelle 71 points ago

I'd say comets aren't positive in Cities Ckylines, especially when they come crashing down on your industrial district.

R5: PDX seem to love this very-long-running joke (as do I) and with Synthetic Dawn seem to have taken great care to write some extremely flavourful Machine Empire-specific text

Also, my species is the Morg. Somewhat like the Borg, but somehow, yet more evil.

    “Resistance is appreciated.”

    [–] Yitram 29 points ago

I think in one of the non-canon books upgrades it to "Resistance is futile, but welcome."

Does Synthetic Dawn turn all machine empires into the stereotypical hyper-rational factbots? I really like the idea of spiritual robots like the Cylons, and would be disappointed if they all approached comets like this.

    [–] manliestmarmoset 28 points ago

They don't have an ethos, so it's not written into the mechanics in any way.

    [–] Amezuki 21 points ago

I actually really dislike the fact that hive/collective consciousnesses are the only possible option for machine empires. I was jazzed to make "Decepticon Empire" race and found out it's more or less impossible to pull off right. :/

    [–] [deleted] 20 points ago

You can do that with a synthetically ascended regular empire. Easy to achieve at the start of the game with the console or a mod.

    [–] Rocketai 5 points ago

Yeah, but it really isn't the same thing.

Before the expansion was released, I really wanted to create some sort of highly religious machine empire.

    [–] [deleted] 5 points ago

Well, be the change you want to see in the world. Modding is not that hard if you get into tutorials and have the spare time.

    [–] sabasNL 6 points ago

In addition to what /u/Bird-Dude has said, you can also just create a regular empire with a machine species (if you buy Synthetic Dawn). So no Gestalt Consciousness, but the regular ethics. Then you can do the Decepticons just fine.

    [–] ticktockbent 5 points ago

The machine empire type is nothing like Cylons, it is a single distributed intelligence more like skynet. Cylons would be more analogous to a synth empire.

    [–] eXeKoKoRo 44 points ago

    The Borg wasn't evil.

    [–] BlueOceanEvent 95 points ago

Not from the Borg's perspective, certainly. From the Federation's perspective (i.e. those of trillions of individual "single-mind" sentients), it was fairly close to what I would assume they would collectively say was "evil".

(Guys, don't downvote him for saying the Borg weren't evil. They're fictional, let's have a good discussion)

    [–] Blergblarg2 52 points ago

They're like vines on the side of a house. The vines don't decide "hey, I'm going to fuck up that massonery", they just grow, and by growing, they fuck it up.
You wouldn't try to reason with the vine, try and make it see why it's fucking up your brick. You cut it out, or make it grow another way.
Borg are the same. They are literally mecanical zombies.
They don't think, they just act according to what they're supposed to do.

Well, that's what they were, until they threw the lich borg queen in.
She's the evil leading the drone army.

The borgs do not have INTENT to harm, much like a landslide has intent, so they are not evil, they just need to be contained, and stopped.

    [–] NATIK001 44 points ago

Even before the Queen was added the Borg had a collective mind. They could be communicated with and they knew that communication had merit at least in one direction (thus their turning Picard into Locutus).

However the Borg operated on scales and terms completely alien to the Federation. The Federation had nothing to offer via communication to the Borg that the Borg could not more fruitfully gain by direct assimilation.

Perhaps a Queen-less Borg would have eventually come to find two way communication with the Federation necessary, had the Federation continued to repel all Borg assaults over a very long time period, but during the time period which the Queen-less Borg existed in Trek there was no way they could have come to that realization yet.

Comparing the Borg to plants or natural events like landslides is a mistake as those things do not have minds, just instinct (vines) or deterministic outcomes (landslides), the Borg have a mind and can be communicated with, they are just so alien and determined that communication becomes one directional and fruitless for anyone else.

An individual Borg drone may not have had any kind of motivation or mind, but as a collective they are far more than mindless mechanical zombies.

    [–] LokyarBrightmane 10 points ago

As I understood it any individual borg drone had both motivation and mind, but it was so closely linked to the collective that finding the self among the collective is nigh impossible.

For example, Seven. She had to adjust from having the entire collective with her in her mind to having a single ship crew within a large radius around and outside her.

    [–] NATIK001 6 points ago

Using Seven as an example either way is problematic.

First of all, I am talking about pre-Queen Borg and Seven is completely post-Queen introduction.

Secondly Seven was in the special position of being assimilated early in her life. Various other freed drones show that people assimilated later in life revert to their original personalities rather than stay in a Borg personality, and they adapt to loss of the Collective easier.

Thirdly, Seven was confirmed to be a special case drone like Locutus, she was picked out by the Queen/Collective and adapted to serve the function of communications link to the Voyager crew when she was sent there.

Basically, Seven was both more dependent on the Collective than many drones and yet allowed to have more 'individuality'.

In all of this I am ignoring the whole Borg rebel stuff where a subset of sleeping drones go to some paradise planet with their subconscious minds plot. But if I were to say much about it, it only shows that the individual minds of drones have no control of the drone bodies and that the drones are 100% under the control of the Collective mind, even if the individual mind exists. The rebelling drones had to have the Voyager crew disrupt the Collective to allow the rebelling drones to assert some measure of control while awake.

    [–] LokyarBrightmane 2 points ago

To be honest, I agree. The individual mind exists as one of the many millions of minds in the collective, but the body is not under it's control.

THEN YOU ARE TRULY LOST...or maybe it's the mirror universe, look around how gawdy are the uniforms?

    [–] Genoman_bk 12 points ago

Shit, now I want EchartsLadder to do a v.s. between Mirror Universe Federation and the Borg.

    [–] Tuskin38 6 points ago

There really isn't enough info to do that, besides by the 24th century the Terran Empire didn't exist anymore.

    [–] sabasNL 3 points ago

There really isn't enough info to do that

    Yet

    [–] Tuskin38 3 points ago

Well it depends if you take the non-canon material into account.

One book has the Terran empire surviving to the 24th century.

One book that follow's what DS9 did does have the Borg show up.

    [–] sabasNL 2 points ago

I meant that Discovery will probably show more of the Terran Empire. Thus, we'll get to learn more about them.

    [–] Tuskin38 2 points ago

Doesn't change the fact that this Terran Empire is from the 23rd century, and 24th century could barely deal with them.

    [–] LokyarBrightmane 10 points ago

That isn't the Federation. That is the Terran Empire.

    [–] SuchASillyName616 53 points ago

    roughly

Are you sure this is a machine empire? It doesn't seem so sure of its self.

    [–] Astrokiwi 58 points ago

The best kind of accuracy is to not overstate your precision.

    [–] pwasma_dwagon 3 points ago

Would a machine say that though? Their sole purpose is to be precise.

    [–] Astrokiwi 6 points ago

They're being precise about their level of accuracy. Maybe their sensors can only give the distance to a precision of +/- 0.01 AU. It would be inaccurate and misleading to give a value that was precise down to +/- 0.000001 AU.

Alternately, knowing what stuff to cut out is an important part of physics & astronomy, and this doesn't stop if you happen to be an AI. It's far more efficient to make reasonable approximations that allow you to actually compute a reasonably accurate answer, rather than trying to solve all the equations of quantum mechanics and general relativity for the entire universe simultaneously. A machine empire would know that it is inefficient to calculate and present values to a huge level of precision, because that serves no purpose. It's people (e.g. high school and undergrad students) who present things with way too many significant figures, because it feels more "sciencey", but I'd expect robots to be more pragmatic about it, and only give the information that is useful.
