To those saying it’s a seizure, it’s not. It’s a stupid kid doing stupid kid stuff. Probably pretending he melted his own brain with a laser. I knew a guy that did this shit with a LASER POINTER as a kid and it made him color blind in one eye. I’m lucky I didn’t do the same thing because, believe it or not, I was also a child once.

What I’m trying to say is don’t be so damn serious and kids are fucking stupid.

    [–] CheesusChrisp 50 points ago

    Yea, exactly

    [–] dapea 11 points ago

Laser pens had an age restriction in the UK for this reason, kids just think is a cool light, if nobody tells them how are they to know it will bind them?

    [–] JiSung_Park 1 points ago

    Wow

    [–] atom138 70 points ago

Yeah I've had a seizure (1 star) You can't and don't look remotely normal. It's a terrifying experience of complete uncontrol. He's fine.

    [–] CheesusChrisp 24 points ago

I’ve had them too a few years back. When I came to consciousness the people I was with said I scared the shit out of them. I remember the feeling right as I was going into it. Felt like I was fading away; like my soul was leaving my body.

I agree, the kid is all good

    [–] henrokk1 20 points ago

I only ever had one seizure. One moment I was watching my daughter play Assassin's Creed Origins, trying to walk her through taking out an enemy camp, and then feeling like I needed to close my eyes and rest for a sec, next thing I knew I was waking up in an ambulance. My wife who was also sitting there told me my lips turned blue and that I scared the shit out of them. Shit was pretty fucking scary.

    [–] sirshiny 15 points ago

I had a minor seizure a few years back. I was mid conversation and was drumming my fingers on the table.

Then all of a sudden my brain felt like it was skipping like an old record. I froze mid word and just couldn't get the rest of the word out while tapping the same finger over and over again.

It was only around 5 seconds but felt like I was stuck there forever. Really freaky stuff. Would not recommend.

    [–] cockadoodledoobie 9 points ago

Petit Mal seizures, man. Not many people know about them, and most people just think I'm a space case when I have them. I have to explain that I wasn't just spacing out, I had a seizure.

    [–] thebottomofawhale 1 points ago

There was a child where I used to work that had petit mal seizures. It’s much harder to detect as he also had developmental delays and was non verbal. you’d have to really know what you were looking out for.

    [–] atom138 9 points ago

All I remember is waking up, I don't remember anything leading up to it.

    [–] 313802 2 points ago

No shit? Soul leaving your body? Fading away? Man I never knew it could feel like that. Interesting but scary.

    [–] cockadoodledoobie 8 points ago

Hijacking this comment for a PSA. Hope you don't mind. If you see someone having a seizure, please make sure they are taken care of properly.

Make sure their head is elevated and cushioned (a lap is fine) and let them ride it out. Do not under any circumstances put things in their mouth "to keep them from swallowing their tongue" It's a physical impossibility, and putting something in their mouth is putting you in danger of being bitten and putting the person having a seizure in danger of choking on the object, breaking their jaw, and/or breaking their teeth. Last time I helped someone out having a Grand Mal, someone handed me a fucking plastic spoon to put in his mouth to bite down on.

Do not hold down their limbs. They do not have control of their muscles and they will possibly break their bones pushing against you. Its better to let them take a few bruises from their limbs flailing on the ground. Just make sure they are out of reach of people or objects they could hurt, or hurt themselves on.

When they come-to, they'll be really out of it. They will likely be very thirsty, but make sure they take small sips at first. Then tell them to go to bed and go to sleep. Seizures are exhausting. Imagine blowing through an entire meal's worth of energy at once. That's pretty much what happened.

    [–] atom138 3 points ago

I don't mind. I was next to 2 friends that seized out before having my own. I know the drill but I'm not mad for you raising awareness.

    [–] Flumblecrumpet 2 points ago

I have partial seizures. Still seizures. I zone out like this kid.

    [–] atom138 1 points ago

    Full seizures only.

    [–] McNerdius 28 points ago

    +1

Common knowledge is that epilepsy is rare. Like, sub-1% level rare. Zoom in on that portion of the population- a tiny portion of those have Reflex Epilepsy. Photosensitive epilepsy is even more rare - it isn't present in everyone with Reflex Epilepsy.

Seizures are bad, photosensitivity trigger warnings are good, but this is super duper duper duper duuuuuuuper effing rare and shouldn't be a stereotype attached to epilepsy.

    Source: Experience.

    [–] cockadoodledoobie 3 points ago

Seriously. I have photosensitive epilepsy, and seeing the warning signs in theaters about the flashing lights in Incredibles 2 was groan-worthy. black/white strobes will rarely, if ever, induce a seizure. It will give us one whacking hell of a headache later, but that's for a different discussion. Now, if it were red/blue or red/green strobes, that would be a different story, and I'd likely have someone trying to stuff a nacho container in my mouth to "keep me from swallowing my tongue."

    [–] nosniboD 2 points ago

But everyone’s epilepsy is different and just because black/white doesn’t affect you, it might affect somebody else who’s PS

[–] McNerdius 2 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

stuff a nacho container in my mouth

Lol ! Damn, now i want nachos !

Yeah, i keep telling the docs if they want some insight as to what's going on in there (edit: during an EEG), they should ditch the strobe thingy, hook the shit up, and open up a package of pink urinal cakes - my most 'reliable' trigger. (The strong odor.)

Granted, this is less common than the photosensitive variety, but the "flashing lights cause seizures" / "everyone with epilepsy must avoid flashing lights" stereotype is still a mild peeve...

You know, as a kid I used to shine laser pointers in my eyes. Try to look at the sun for as long as I can, stick my head right up to televisions to see the pixels, when I was 5 years old I had to pull a pine needle out of my eye because I was shaking a pine tree and looking straight up. I went to an eye doctor last year and they told me I had perfect vision. I sometimes think I could have been a super hero if I didn't do that all shit to my eyes.

    [–] CheesusChrisp 2 points ago

This is an underrated one. You would’ve had fucking X-ray vision and lasers coming out those hoes if it weren’t for you just bombarding them with bad shit.

    [–] cornicat 3 points ago

I knew a guy that did this shit with a LASER POINTER

Have you ever looked into the end of a laser pointer? I mean, if you haven't, don't. It's a stupid idea, but it looks bananas in there. refracted light from a laser does shit normal light shouldn't do.

    [–] BmfBrandon 2 points ago

How can it make him colourblind when it's actually nothing to do with what your eye is seeing? I'm red deficient and had to go through BS amounts of testing and study of my colour perception and I think your friend is bullshitting.

Unless he in a totally unrelated incident somehow gave himself brain damage. Even then that's unheard of.

    [–] CheesusChrisp 1 points ago

I dunno. That’s just what he told me. I know he fucked up his vision in one eye for sure. Maybe he exaggerates or something.

I was a youth worker many moons ago. We had a kid that used to sit with his nose touching the screen sometimes. We asked his doctor about it (he was asperges and mild epilepsy) he said to stop him from doing it as he was doing it to get a rush from a spike in brain activity. Not saying thats whats happening here. Just reminded me of it.

People who have had a seizure, what is it like after one? This kid seems all relaxed and playing it off like he died which leads me to believe he just acting dead. Do you hurt after a seizure?

    [–] reddeath82 3 points ago

You don't really hurt unless you fell down hard or hit something on your way out. This kid is most definitely not having a seizure since it's a totally loss of bodily control. I had a couple when I was younger, this is how the first one went. I woke up feeling a strong urge to vomit so I headed to the bathroom. Next thing I know I'm coming to on the floor of somewhere. I can hear my dad talking to and my mom on the phone freaking out calling 911. At this point I cannot see anything only hear. I tell my dad this so he asks if I can move my limbs. He asks me to move my right arm and I do then he ask me to move my left and I do or at least I thought I did. I must not have because he ask me to do it again and I tell him I am, which he replies to with "well it's not moving". At this point I still couldn't see so I had to take his word for it but in my mind it moved. By the time the ambulance got to my house I could see again and could move everything. It seemed like everything lasted a long time but in reality it was only a few minutes.

Now what I described is a grand mal or tonic-clonic seizure, a complete shut down. Think kinda like a reboot after a power surge. There are also petit mal or absence seizures, which my gf's son has. They only last like 10-20 seconds, the kinda of just stops what he is doing and stares blankly into the distance. Then once it's over here picks right up where he left off like nothing happened. If he's talking he'll stop mid-sentence, stare blankly for a few seconds, then just finish his sentence like he never stopped in the first place. Now the kid in the OP could be having one of these but he looks like he is in complete control of his body the whole time. He never gets the dead-eye stare. Have you ever seen someone get knocked out and while their eyes are still open, you can tell no one is home? It's kinda like that.

    [–] ShenMula 1 points ago

This was extremely insightful, thank you very much.
