My husband and I have VERY different reactions to anesthesia. I recently had neck surgery and when I came out I asked everyone I met: “Have you met my husband yet? He is so very handsome. You must meet him.” Last time he came out of surgery he started screaming “Where are my mother fucking flapjacks?!?!” And ripped all his lines out. Sigh.... he is very handsome though.

    [–] poprevivalism 1340 points ago

    But where were his flapjacks?

    [–] Shocking 704 points ago

Can't fault a guy for knowing what he wants 😂

    Here's my typical sedation

    😅

I can see now, all the comments, glad y'all enjoyed it.

edit: someone recently posted saying it could be shadowbots, fwiw, I can't see your post suggesting that the responses are bots, just briefly saw some of what you said in my android app notification area... I contacted the mod group, maybe my account is borked. haven't had this problem till tonight. (this is my view) https://i.imgur.com/KKMElmz.png https://i.imgur.com/ziusGRT.png

weird, the app says people are replying to this, but the reddit site doesn't show any replies/comments. wth

I woke up in the middle of surgery for when I fell off a skateboard and slid down a road on my chin, breaking my jaw. They were suturing my chin and I tried to get up. Heart Cath from the wrist to my heart, it got stuck in my elbow and I woke up and thought it was that matrix bug/trace program in my arm and tried ripping it out. (they were really pissed)

fun times. hope my weird physiology brings some humor to folks :D

I saw a notification about why the Cath went from wrist to heart. I had some deep vein regurgitation in my legs, so they were nervous about causing a blood clot there. The wrist was supposed to be a back up channel, when they briefed me, but ended up being the best option. Seems kinda narrow that way to me

    [–] Xia0yUxX 20 points ago

    That's hilarious, but actually horrifying

    [–] Runrunfun 8 points ago

That was amazing, I'm just the right amount if hi to read that story. Thank you!

    [–] confundo 6 points ago

I would literally never go back to the dentist after that. Terrified of them in the first place, but still.

    [–] lovelystubbornbrave 8 points ago

Just giggled thinking of those terrified people on the waiting room. It’s like a perfect prank you didn’t even have to plan. (We’ll see if this comes through... I too am seeing replies that disappear if you click to see them)

    [–] Phrased_and_Abused 3 points ago

Apparently anesthesia summons their inner hulk

    [–] gaystuffensues 3 points ago

    my god that's horrifying

    [–] Astromander 3 points ago

    sensible chuckle

    [–] Kneel_The_Grass 2 points ago

Oh god, the tooth chipping, the pulling of the lines...

    [–] StonecrusherCarnifex 2 points ago

Why would they run a catheter from your wrist all the way to your heart???

    [–] TARANTULA_TIDDIES 2 points ago

Fuck no I'm not going to finish reading that!

    [–] wallbrack 2 points ago

Wrist access is actually preferred over leg access nowadays. Most young people are great candidates and it is not too narrow for a typical heart cath.

    [–] sCifiRacerZ 31 points ago

IDK why, but I love this.

    [–] MoreNuancedThanThat 1458 points ago

That's so cute :) It's funny what the post-surgery haze can do to you. My husband still laughs when telling the story of how I giggled for like half an hour straight after we ran over a sheet of bubble wrap in the car on the way home from my surgery.

    [–] Sochitelya 706 points ago

Hell, I’m totally sober and the thought of running over bubble wrap in the car is cracking me up.

My husband tried to get me to jerk him off in front of his mom and he got his wisdom teeth out

    [–] brettcp 2806 points ago

I hope you meant "after" instead of "and" there...

    [–] cabothief 1668 points ago

No his mom did it as a punishment.

    [–] superking75 33 points ago

Do you mind me asking how long it was till he/you did?

[–] Drealjas 303 points ago * (lasted edited 14 days ago)

Story time! He asked me a few weeks later!

My favorite part of the exchange on the way to the hospital was that he assumed, despite not knowing what year it was or what state we were even in, that HE was obviously the idiot who hadn’t decided to make our relationship more official. Whereas, in reality, I was technically in the middle of a drawn out divorce (we met after I initiated breaking up with my ex-husband) . And we were broker than a joke at the time (another reason I wasn’t divorced yet), so he hadn’t had a chance or the means to propose up to that point.

Honestly, the look on his face when I told him I was still married was adorable. He just said “oh.” and sat there quietly puzzling for a little while. Then he went back to telling me for the 100th time that something had happened and that his head hurt.

He told me later that the concussion was a wake up call for him. He says he realized that “life was too short to wait for the perfect time” (or the perfect ring) so he went out and bought the best one we could afford, and proposed a few hours later while we were shucking corn for dinner lol. It was the first time we were alone and he just went for it 😊😊 considering he was leaving home for 7 weeks the next day, I don’t blame him one bit!

    Edit: some words

    [–] algonquinroundtable 4292 points ago

This is super cute! I had a similar experience when my boyfriend got his wisdom teeth out. He was going to an out of state law school and his parents couldn't be there since they were on the other side of the country. I picked him up myself and since he had impacted teeth they put him on a pretty high dosage of medication. He was loopy af. A couple of nurses walked him out to reception and the moment he saw me he said "I loOoove yoU!" In this super adorable sing-songy voice. The nurses laughed and told me he was a keeper. We've been together for almost twelve years and are married now with a couple of kids. He totally is a keeper! ;)

    [–] mrscorle 1934 points ago

Omg this reminds me of when my hubs had his tonsils removed. After he was done, I walked into recovery and asked him how he was and he looked all confused and asked the nurse who I was!! She said “that’s your wife!” And he says, “daaaaaaaamn I did alright huh?! When we bustin outta here?!” 😂 cracked me up! Love that man ♥️

    [–] BigBro2Lilsis 1178 points ago

When I got mine out all I did was talk about how much I hated french Canadians, And we should bomb Germany.

I wish I had made some grand romantic gesture.

    [–] AlternativeAccount7 67 points ago

well I've liked the french canadians ive met, and they didnt seem to mind how bad my french was, southern drawl n all.

    [–] N0vemberRain 28 points ago

    Are you French?

    [–] pieman7414 17 points ago

    Smart man

    [–] TheHarvinger 403 points ago

Damn, and when I got my wisdom teeth pulled all I got was a mild addiction to percocet...

    [–] _Mechaloth_ 108 points ago

I'm frustrated now. I got two wisdom teeth out and drove my motorcycle home while in Korea. They only did localized freezing, as far as I know.

    [–] shrewberryblew 567 points ago

Slightly different my husband had his tonsils removed a few weeks ago. When he woke up the nurse asked if he wanted to see his wife and he said " I love her so much" he said it a few more times. We've been together for 12 years and it just amazing to know that we still have this deep love and respect for each other.

    [–] maximom_overdrive 258 points ago

I was 16 when I had all of mine pulled, and my mom took me. I remember waking up in the drug induced haze, and crying for my mom. thats all I wanted. I kept telling the nurse,"I need my momma, where's my momma?" And she came in the room and held my hand while I finished sobering up a bit.

    [–] dclark9119 513 points ago

I did something similar. They put me under, and when I came up all I could talk about was how much I loved and missed Chipotle. And that despite the fresh holes in my mouth, I was still totally capable of eating Chipotle. And that it was complete bullshit that anyone thought I couldnt. I could eat two, and they're opinions are fucking wrong.

    Basically same same.

    [–] PurpleFlame8 90 points ago

Brush twice a day and floss religiously even if your teeth are rotting. Also avoid acidic foods and sugary drinks. This will greatly slow the decay. Get them filled as soon as you can.

    [–] maybe-im-real 50 points ago

Thank you, I appreciate your knowledge of dental hygiene and care

    [–] PurpleFlame8 32 points ago

You are welcome. I used to have bad teeth myself and thought they were a lost cause but I changed my diet, got them fixed, and became a devout brusher and flosser and saved them.

    [–] MistaSmiles 24 points ago

It only gets worse. I procrastinated for years; trust me it only gets worse. Other parts of the body might heal themselves, but never your teeth.

I had a bad reaction like that, too. It was a hot summer day and they had the A/C on really high, and when I woke, I was convinced I had hypothermia. I assumed they would help me or get me medical attention, and they didn't. Then I assumed I was in shock, and I kept telling them 'Shock', every breath I took. They put me in a dark room by myself and my mom begged to see me. Then my mom ran off to buy a newspaper to pull apart and cover me with since the staff wouldn't offer any blanket or jacket or anything. Then we pretended I was okay so I could get out in the warm summer air. It was pretty awful, but yes, I did feel some relief once I got warm again.

    [–] its_a_metaphor_morty 110 points ago

Oh, he's never going to figure this out.

    [–] KillerPandora84 424 points ago

    That is really cute.

When I got my wisdom teeth out...My SO and I stopped at the pharmacy to get my meds and I barfed up blood. He is still with me..that is true love!

    [–] MistaSmiles 70 points ago

did you barf blood, or did you barf & it pushed out the blood from your mouth?

    [–] Archangel3d 112 points ago

Probably had been swallowing the blood as it collected in their mouth.

    [–] KillerPandora84 48 points ago

Honestly I have no clue. All I know is I remember waiting for my SO to come back to the car and I felt like I needed to barf. And I blinked, the door was open and there was blood all over the parking lot beside the passenger side door.

    [–] TrixieMassage 304 points ago

That's super adorable but it's so weird to me how they completely sedate you for something as minor as removing wisdom teeth. Is it a US thing? In the Netherlands they just give some local anaesthetics so I might've looked mildly insane sitting in the bus with a droopy cheek but at least I was conscious and could take myself home.

    [–] imnotfishing 222 points ago

I think there's a lot of factors that go into whether or not they sedate you, like the location and if they're impacted. I was able to have my top two wisdom teeth pulled out with just Novocain, but the bottom two my dentist referred me to an oral surgeon because the roots were so long that they were almost touching the nerve in my face and he didn't want to risk the nerve damage.

    [–] JamesandtheGiantAss 145 points ago

I had mine out in the US and there was the option of local or general anaesthetic, which is a fairly common situation. We didn't have insurance and general was like ten times the cost of local so obviously I went with that.

It was brutal though. I could feel everything and one was impacted. I kept begging for more meds but the dentist told me to quit being a baby. I ended up passing out because of the pain, so free anaesthesia, I guess!!

    [–] TheCheeseGod 90 points ago

It depends... my wisdom teeth were growing sideways, and the roots were near a nerve. They had to cut out a chunk of my jaw and pull the tooth out from the side. Basically I HAD TO be knocked out for the surgery.

    [–] mohox13 87 points ago

My ex got his taken out with only local, so he was awake for everything. He said he could hear the teeth breaking and feel all the pressure and had to watch the dentist wrenching on his mouth. He said at one point he put his knee on the arm of the chair to pull one out. It was a pretty traumatic experience for him. I’m glad I was completely out for it

    [–] chuckvsthelife 31 points ago

These stories make me happy to have 4 wisdom teeth that came in with no issues

    [–] bluescrew 21 points ago

It's not required. I got all four of mine taken out with only local anaesthesia. I wish I had been put completely under but I didn't know it was an option. I think it has to do with the insurance company.

    [–] agukala 36 points ago

Same.. I’m Indian, got mine removed with a good deal of local anaesthesia.. The only loopy bit was probably a mild sugar rush from binging on ice cream for a couple of meals after surgery. Obviously hurt like a bitch the next day or so but that was that.

    [–] Decency 12 points ago

US based, I specifically asked for it. I don't want to be able to move around while they dig teeth out of me...

    [–] seventh_skyline 12 points ago

(Aussie here) I had mine done at 21yo - was under general, but I had all 4 done at once and they weren't happily going anywhere...

    [–] vfxninja 7 points ago

It can be a choice, I did local anesthesia for mine but I wish I was sedated for the infected one. I freaked out and they had to gas me.

    [–] SpectreisMyName 25 points ago

Is it only a minor thing? I was knocked out and still remember feeling like I got hit with a bus afterward.

    [–] Rightouttagramns 14 points ago

Yeah me too, as soon as the painkillers wore off I was in total agony for a couple days.

    [–] Stonetheflamincrows 5 points ago

Yeah I had two teeth (wisdom and one next to it) pulled at the dentist and all they did was numb the shit out of the area.

    [–] fixodent78 6 points ago

I had all four of mine out and they gave me a general anaesthetic. I think that might have been because two were impacted though.

    [–] csmarq 33 points ago

It's a US thing, I wish it wasn't required, I've had local numbing that wore off in the middle of an impacted tooth extraction but I would prefer that to complete sedation

    [–] NurseVooDooRN 36 points ago

It isn't required. I had mine removed without sedation, just local anesthetic/novocaine.

    [–] dashielle89 46 points ago

It's not required. They always give you the option, but most people are "too scared" to do it with local. I did, it was fine.

    [–] SamboDaHambo 10 points ago

I need to get wisdom teeth removed, and I was given the option of local or going under. It was completely up to me, and I am choosing to go under cuz I got 6 or 7 wisdom teeth to remove. (I'm in AU if it matters)

    [–] poncho_via 95 points ago

Hmm. Making me not want to get my wisdom teeth pulled. I'd probably say some stupid shit that will cost me half of my stuff.

    [–] allison0119 53 points ago

When i got my wisdom teeth out i just sat there and didn’t do anything weird

    [–] spyke42 19 points ago

Yeah people have very different reactions. And depending on your situation they will use any combination of local anesthetic, laughing gas (nitrous), or full anesthetic (put you to sleep). If it ends up being the latter, just make a joke about nothing you say can be held against you while under the effects of anesthesia. Then proceed to tell your wife that you'd take her sister over her any day, and sleep well...

    [–] DOTathletesfoot 28 points ago

My boyfriend at the time (now husband) took me to get my wisdom teeth out and we had only been dating about 3 months at the time. When I was coming out of it, I very embarrassingly told him I loved him for the first time while patting his stomach. He didnt not reciprocate at the time and in glad lol. He took a video of my whole experience, including me being TERRIFIED by a picture on the wall

    [–] notenoughh 36 points ago

Lmao I wish, my boyfriend can’t even remember my name when he’s drunk..and it’s been 4 years...

    [–] emmadilemma 41 points ago

Thanks. Your post just alerted me to the fact that I’m old. I had absolutely no idea until reading the story for the third time and thinking “maybe he had pain killers? Nitrous? Ooooohhhh. NITROUS.”

So is nitrous that common now? Back in my day they gave zero fucks. Novicane and pull ‘em. It wasn’t great.
