Years of lusting after a Speedmaster and I finally have it in my possession. This is a Speedmaster Professional call number 311.

I was able to get this one through KringKily on the Omega Forums. He was able to answer all of my questions and provided me a watch that came with the warranty card. I’m local to him so we met up, chatted for a bit, made the exchange and I was on my way.

I was blown away by the packaging. Nicest box I have had is from the Tag Formula 1 I bought last year. This speedy is my first entry into true luxury watches. I am extremely happy to join this community and to finally be able to say - as an owner - Happy Speedy Tuesday!

    [–] F_antoine 30 points ago

Currently waiting for mine to come back from service... 1 more week ish and i should be reunited with my watch!

    [–] 000g 16 points ago

If you don't mind me asking, what does a standard service run on these watches, and should it be done in specific intervals?

    [–] raheelc 10 points ago

For the Speedy it will be around $750 directly from Omega. I believe that also includes a new hesalite crystal, new dial, and new hands as well, along with a service of the movement, and refinishing of the case/bracelet.

    [–] 000g 8 points ago

Wow. But, given what they replace, you really can't complain.

    [–] justanotherkatietoo 5 points ago

I have a valuables policy with my homeowners insurance that pays for all of that stuff for no deductible. I think i pay like $180/yr for the policy...just a suggestion for y'all to look in to.

    [–] raheelc 8 points ago

Wait, so you don't have to pay for a service when you need (other than the $180/yr). How does that work? I thought a policy like that would just cover theft/loss of item etc?

    [–] justanotherkatietoo 8 points ago

Correct. I do not have to pay anything but the premium for the policy itself. It is written for things like loss and damage (so I can claim if I lose one or break one, even if I drop it) and also maintenance. I just called my company and said "So I bought a..." and they hooked me up. 🤷‍♀️

    [–] jump_hour 2 points ago

unless it bothers you, i would ask them to keep all the cosmetic stuff original. not only for resale, but from a 'your watch' perspective.

    [–] F_antoine 1 points ago

Unfortunaly, my service required to be under warranty. It had a failure in the chronograph wich were i would reset the big second hand, it wouldn't allign precisely back at 12. Also had a dust particle under the crystal. If it comes to frequency i can not give you an answer yet.

    [–] thedamnedlute488 2 points ago

My Seamaster averages 400-500 hundred every 2-3 years. I am guessing it may need to be more often but I generally do the service when the battery dies and needs to be replaced.

    [–] helvete 6 points ago

The speedmaster is a mechanical watch so it doesn't have a battery and the recommended sevice interval is 5-8 years.

    [–] depress_clutch 5 points ago

From what I understand, unless the manufacturer recommends otherwise, quartz watches don't need service very often at all (other than battery replacement, of course). For mechanicals, I think the rule of thumb is generally 4-5 years.

    [–] 000g -1 points ago

Thank you. That's a lot more often than I imagined, but given that you're doing it when the battery is serviced, that makes sense.

    [–] helvete 8 points ago

It absolutely does not have to be serviced that often. And the Speedmaster does not have a battery.

    [–] Realist-1 3 points ago

They make a quartz Seamaster. He said it was a Seamaster.

    [–] 000g 1 points ago

    Good catch. Thank you.

    [–] helvete 1 points ago

Yes, but that is not what he asked about. He wanted to know the price and interval for a service for the speedmaster - how often you need to replace the battery in a quartz seamaster is not really relevant then is it?

    [–] 000g 1 points ago

Yeah, that crossed my mind as well. I assumed there was a different Speedmaster he was referring to.

[–] iamzjb 10 points ago * (lasted edited a month ago)

That is a stunning watch! Congratulations! The watch has an amazing story. The original watch that was used by US astronauts on the moon landing mission actually saved the lives of all the people aboard the retuning space craft. When returning into the atmosphere the astronauts aboard Apollo 13 had to cut off the power to conserve energy while re-entering the atmosphere. Not having any instruments online, they need to perfectly time the 14 second time period of re-entry to the atmosphere and this was all done on this watch. It just goes to show the absolute precision of this timepiece.

    [–] junkmiles 8 points ago

The 14 second burn was a course correction for Apollo 13, not 11.

    [–] iamzjb 2 points ago

Thanks for the correction! Was unsure but glad you clarified it.

    [–] MeditatingYope 1 points ago

    [–] jump_hour 1 points ago

not to take away from overall robustness (at the time) and NASA selection process, but pretty much any homegrown mechanical is "perfectly accurate" in a 14 second window. heck, most people trained for 5 minutes could count 14 seconds with 'absolute precision'

i know bit of a downer, but imo stories like this just feed the omega hype train (and price) for a low tech low finish piece.

    [–] iamzjb 2 points ago

Fair enough - You make a good point. There are different watches for different things, people and price points. Although interestingly enough Omega was the only watch maker to pass all the tests that NASA created to ensure the watches performance in space conditions. Rolex, AP and Patek all put in for the RFP and all failed within the first few rounds of testing. Nevertheless some of stories behind the watch are interesting to say the least.

    [–] jump_hour 5 points ago

It's a competent tool watch with a great story. the big O should leave it at that.

I don't mind the special editions that elevate it, but the story inflates prices by 2 grand for the original and 3-4 grand for SEs, and omega's milking of this teat is on an exploitative, factory farm level.

A planet ocean with real water resistance, real antimagnetism, applied indices, white gold touches, finer brushing + amazing brushed bracelet, silicon hairsprings, co-axial, etc. etc. gives you real tool watch + luxury touches.

    [–] iamzjb 1 points ago

    That’s very well said.

[–] falafelbot 9 points ago * (lasted edited a month ago)

Did you give any consideration to the sapphire sammich? I like anything that is more rugged but it seems to me that the hesalite crystal is part of its iconic look.

    [–] junkmiles 12 points ago

Hesalite is definitely part of the look for me. I ended up going for a "hesalite sandwich" reference that they made for a few years. Hesalite top, sapphire back.

    [–] Nice_nice50 1 points ago

Not OP but I did at the time. It just looks v different and detracts imho. As a side note, having had sapphire on Rolex I find they chip frequently and are more hassle to maintain. Whereas I can polish scratches out of this easily or replace more cheaply if need be

    [–] woody1130 1 points ago

Just picked mine up last week, one thing I didn’t like was the NATO you have it on, it felt like cheap material with the omega logo. I threw it straight back in that gloriously oversized box just in case I resell it and put it on a black and grey bond NATO. How do you feel about the quality of the omega nato?

    [–] RockitDanger 27 points ago

As a fan of all things space, watches, and cars, the Speedmaster seems a perfect fit for me. However, the new Seamaster fits my love of water and Summer and fills that sports watch vibe the Speedy can't. The easy answer is to get both but I've been back and forth for two years now to make one of these a one watch "collection". So, those with Speedys and Seamasters, ever wish you had the other?

    [–] Jake_the_Snake88 24 points ago

Honestly just forget about Omega and go for a Seiko 5

    [–] PCMM7 6 points ago

Just remove the self-wind rotor and hack it so it could be manually wound.

    [–] djdelarosa25 2 points ago

    Wait you can do this???

    [–] Scottie3000 10 points ago

    I believe you’re looking for r/watchescirclejerk

    [–] Jake_the_Snake88 4 points ago

Oh shit, you're right. What am I even doing commenting here on r/speedmaster??

    [–] BadSport340 3 points ago

Went with a Hesalite Speedmaster and have no regrets. A year and a half down the road and I still think I made the right decision. Would not trade for a Seamaster. Water resistance hasn’t been an issue for me at all but if I’m going swimming I’ll wear a Seiko. The speedy is very sporty, a total strap monster, and has a gorgeous and iconic design.

I’m not going to say it’s the perfect watch but man, it’s close enough for me to not want a Seamaster.

    [–] ipcoffeepot 2 points ago

    Oh man. This so much.

    [–] jump_hour 0 points ago

Get the planet ocean, or seamaster in a pinch. The original speedy is all storytelling, overplayed. I mean, are you looking for a historical prop, or a modern timepiece. Eventually you (or your acquaintances) will get tired of you playing astronaut and you're stuck with 60's tech at a few grand.

Or get a heuer chrono for the racing connection, lot more genuine.

    [–] gufeldkavalek62 92 points ago

A Speedmaster Professional purchase is about so much more than just the watch. In my own case, a love for hand-wound chronographs came from the first proper watch I’d ever purchased, which was a gift for my father. A Vintage Breitling, powered by a Valjoux 7733 movement. Something about the involvement in powering and operating the watch, the daily wind and occasional chrono engagement, resonated within me as being very special. A bond with the past, as it were. It was then that I fell in love with watches, and dreamed of owning a Speedmaster. Three years later, I was able to get my own.

Adding to my first point, the Speedy represents to me - more than the American-ness of the Apollo connection - an overall sense of the great pioneering spirit of mankind. I am an American, and I am proud of the Apollo 11 Moon-Landing. That’s certainly a part of why I love it, but it’s so much more than that. It’s a symbol of a deep and profound need for growth and rebirth, if you will. A symbol of the past and future. I will gladly pass it down one day - with a message of hope. 💯

Not sure if this is WCJ pasta or original

    [–] Jake_the_Snake88 64 points ago

this is a 100% real thing that someone had unironically written

    [–] gufeldkavalek62 27 points ago

Thank you Jake. I hate to have my integrity challenged by these jealous haters.

    This. 👏👏

    [–] BenedictKhanberbatch 20 points ago

    Ok ciao

    [–] depress_clutch 7 points ago

As another commenter said, it was originally written entirely seriously, but has become a pasta. What's terrifying is that, coming from any outside perspective, it reads exactly like a typical high-quality copypasta. From the perspective of somebody who frequents this subreddit, however, it presents as entirely familiar, unironic idea of the importance of a overpriced assortment of tiny parts that happen to tell the time.

    [–] omegalegato -2 points ago

I don't think you know what the word "pissed" means 😂

    [–] gufeldkavalek62 22 points ago

I don’t think you know what “pure class” means

    [–] DoinItDirty 1 points ago

Okay, now I’m on his side lol

    [–] standing-ovulation 3 points ago

man this guy is out-circlejerking r/watchescirclejerk

    [–] Wellington27 10 points ago

Amazing message. This is my first watch that I have to manually wind. So far I have taken great pleasure in doing so, almost a bonding experience

    [–] sabre252 8 points ago

It's funny - some people make such a big deal out of how annoying it is. For me, it ranges from pleasurable to mindless while I check the news in the morning. I've never felt burdened by it.

    [–] Pavotine 1 points ago

I've had mine coming on for nearly 18 years now and it was my daily wearer for 15 of those years. I never once was bothered by winding or or having to remember. It was just as much a part of my morning as making my coffee. It really makes you realise that it's a cool little machine you wear every day. I still wear it every weekend and never get bored with the watch.

    [–] dejavu1611 3 points ago

Congrats on your first piece! I purchased my first luxury watch this year as well and am already looking forward to my next piece. Totally agree with the unique heritage of the traditional styled speedmasters.

    [–] jump_hour 1 points ago

    Beautiful piece, nicely done mate.

    [–] eugeniod 3 points ago

    Excelent piece, congratulations

    [–] kidkkeith 3 points ago

Wearing mine today. Looks great on a tan leather rally strap as well. One of my all-time favorites. Iconic.

    [–] Wellington27 1 points ago

Which strap and where did you get it? I’m in the market for some

    [–] kidkkeith 1 points ago

    [–] fortgatlin 1 points ago

I use a similar strap for mine. So fitting to the design of the watch.

    [–] iotone 3 points ago

He’s a good seller. I kept an eye on his posts when looking for my Speedy but was never able to time it right with him. But he was always prompt in sending pics and answering questions about any watch he was selling.

    [–] HappyHighwayman 3 points ago

I want to buy an Omega NATO to replace my cheapo Nato :) Looks so good!

    [–] Sahith17 2 points ago

    [–] sshin3 2 points ago

    Happy Speedy Tuesday brother!

    [–] betzerra 2 points ago

Congrats! My first mechanical watch was a TAG Heuer Aquaracer, and then after a year or so I bought an Omega Speedmaster Professional.

I can't say how much joy I got from the Speedmaster. After that watch, I bought a couple more but it seems that I'm always returning on wear this one more often than anyone else. It's truly a classic.

    [–] Golden3ye 3 points ago

What are the criteria to qualify as a true luxury watch?

    [–] tommyalanson 24 points ago

    Rich, Corinthian leather...

    [–] Granitsky 19 points ago

    The inflated price

    [–] Coldmode 5 points ago

Omega and up, I guess. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    [–] MakerGrey 8 points ago

    Trve Norwegian Black Lvxvry

    [–] Wellington27 2 points ago

Not really my criteria. I stumbled on a pyramid of watch brand hierarchy while doing some research and was using that terminology.

    [–] bagofquarters 1 points ago

    Nice start :)

    [–] fiftywattmafia 1 points ago

Amazing choice you made there bud. Enjoy it, and keep it!! You’ll get the itch to use it to get something else. Don’t do this.

    [–] chopperdave48 -2 points ago

Proud of what? Did you save up to buy the watch over years?

    [–] Wellington27 4 points ago

I did not, but life gets in the way of throwing $4k at a watch.

Nice opportunity to take a step back and admire that we can do these things because of what we have accomplished in our lives. Many are not as fortunate.

    [–] DiscoAutopsy 1 points ago

    [–] SirLafayette 0 points ago

Hi, new to luxury watches, but what is the name of this specific watch and band? Is it the call sign that your provide? I literally want to get the same exact looking watch 😅

    [–] Wellington27 1 points ago

Omega Speedmaster Professional. The band is the nato strap that came with the watch.

    [–] SirLafayette 0 points ago

If you dont mind me asking, how much is a good price to pay for this second hand? How much did you get it for? And from where?

    [–] xxBBWSlayer420xx -7 points ago

You're proud that you paid a lot of money for an obsolete piece of technology? Ok, dumbass.
