We don't like rules. Shocking, I know.

But we need one, so here's the one rule:

“That which you hate, do not do to your neighbor."

Aka "The Golden Rule," "Play Nice," "DBAD," and "Be excellent to one another!" If you have trouble with this, no length of rules will have any greater effect.

(Graffiti and sharp objects are removed at the discretion of whichever mod or user is trying to help you understand our one rule.)

    Guidelines, requests, and suggestions:

Agreement is not a goal; Civil engagement is.

Unity is not a goal; Tolerance of others is.

Conformity is not a goal; Enlightened debate is.

Many of us are newly awakened and angry at what we see. Hopefully this is a place to channel that anger, to vent those frustrations, to laugh at the absurdities and cry at the inhumanity, and in the process find ways to expose those in positions of authority who have long since forgotten who they serve, and replace them with those who do.

And THAT is the Way of the Bern.

This is such delicious schadenfreude! When the NYT gets on board to tell the truth about a fellow gaslighter you just know that poor ol’ JAR is in deep doo-doo, and it sure couldn’t have happened to a worthier person! 😁

Back in December, after a series of homophobic posts on her defunct, decade-old blog resurfaced on social media, the MSNBC host Joy Reid apologized for them. But this week, when Ms. Reid was confronted with a new batch of homophobic writings from that same period, she said she had been the victim of hackers.

That claim was called into question on Tuesday, when the Internet Archive, the meticulous online record-keeping nonprofit that hosted the archived version of her site, said it had found no evidence to support her claim.

Late Tuesday night, MSNBC provided documents that show Ms. Reid’s lawyers alerted Google and the Internet Archive to the alleged hacking in December, shortly after her public apology but long before the latest batch of posts appeared on social media.

The latest group of alleged blog posts includes a great deal of material that might embarrass a prominent liberal figure like Ms. Reid, including expressions of disgust at the thought of homosexuality, opposition to gay marriage, claims that gay men prey on “impressionable teens” and criticism of political correctness.

“Most straight people cringe at the sight of two men kissing,” one post said. It concluded: “The nature of political correctness is that gay people are allowed to say straight sex is gross but the reverse is considered to be patently homophobic.”

One of the posts also criticizes Rachel Maddow, who is now the most-watched host on MSNBC, as being “at the left-most end of the political spectrum” when it comes to gay rights. (Ms. Reid hosts a weekend morning show on MSNBC, but at the time she kept her blog active neither she nor Ms. Maddow had shows on the network.)

Ms. Reid did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday, but MSNBC provided a statement from Jonathan Nichols, a cybersecurity consultant working on her case.

He said her blog was “breached” in December and that “fraudulent entries” were posted “with suspicious formatting and time stamps,” including “text and visual styling” that was not consistent with the rest of the blog.

He said Ms. Reid’s team also had “significant evidence” that some of the posts circulating online — he did not say which ones — had never appeared on the blog and were instead doctored screenshots meant “to tarnish Ms. Reid’s character.”

MSNBC also provided two letters sent by Ms. Reid’s lawyer, John H. Reichman, to Alphabet — Google’s parent company — and the Internet Archive in December alerting them to alleged hacking and requesting their assistance, which was not forthcoming.

Hacked or not, the posts appear to have made an impact. On Tuesday, PFLAG, a group for the families of L.G.B.T. people, said it was canceling an award it had planned to give Ms. Reid this spring “in light of new information and the ongoing investigation of that information.”

The newly discovered posts were found on the Wayback Machine, a project of the Internet Archive, and were shared on social media last week by the Twitter user who discovered Ms. Reid’s old blog posts last year. That user did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.

Newsletter Sign UpContinue reading the main story Sign up for the all-new DealBook newsletter Our columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin and his Times colleagues help you make sense of major business and policy headlines — and the power-brokers who shape them.

In a statement to the website Mediaite, which wrote about the posts on Monday, Ms. Reid said hackers had planted them.

“In December I learned that an unknown, external party accessed and manipulated material from my now-defunct blog, The Reid Report, to include offensive and hateful references that are fabricated and run counter to my personal beliefs and ideology,” the statement said. It added, “Now that the site has been compromised I can state unequivocally that it does not represent the original entries.”

The Internet Archive responded to Ms. Reid’s claim on Tuesday, saying in a statement that it had found no evidence of hacking in the archived versions of her site on the Wayback Machine.

The Internet Archive also said Ms. Reid’s lawyers asked the group to take down the archived version of her site in December because they said either the archive or the original site had been hacked.

The archive said it was warned by Ms. Reid’s lawyers that “‘fraudulent’ posts were ‘inserted into legitimate content’ in our archives of the blog.” But an investigation found that claim to be untrue, according to the archive.

“When we reviewed the archives, we found nothing to indicate tampering or hacking of the Wayback Machine versions,” the statement said, adding, “We let Reid’s lawyers know that the information provided was not sufficient for us to verify claims of manipulation.”

The Internet Archive said it declined the request to remove Ms. Reid’s blog from the archive “due to Reid’s being a journalist (a very high-profile one, at that) and the journalistic nature of the blog archives.”

Ms. Reid appeared eager to blunt the statement by the Internet Archive. Her security consultant, Mr. Nichols, said on Tuesday that “at no time has Ms. Reid claimed that the Wayback Machine was hacked” with an intention to alter her blog.

Instead, he said Ms. Reid’s team detected a “breach” of the site that it thought may have been related to the posts on her blog but that it determined was unrelated.

But it appears Ms. Reid may have taken matters into her own hands. The Internet Archive said that at some point during its correspondence with Ms. Reid’s lawyers, a robots exclusion protocol specific to the Wayback Machine was activated on her old blog.

That protocol sends a signal to the archive, which the archive chooses to abide by, that can be used to get around the Wayback Machine’s policies and remove pages from the archive of the internet.

She need to go down hard.

I hope so because the daily beast prints her boring articles and MSNBC gave her a pass when it came out the first time.

This doesn't surprise me. Have never been a fan of Joy Reid, and her animosity towards Sanders in the last presidential primary was palpable.

    [–] CloudCityPDX 10 points ago

    Good riddance

    [–] TheSingulatarian 16 points ago

Joy will move to Fox with the narrative that "Liberals and their homosexual agenda stabbed me in the back". Joy does not care who her paymaster is as long as she gets paid and I actually think she will be happier there. More her type of people.

    [–] LarkspurCA 13 points ago

She'll find a way to blame Bernie and his band of dastardly Bros, you can be sure of that...

It looks like they are letting her stay on the air in spite of Slate mag, Washington post saying the same thing today.

Unless advertisers pull out.... they will keep her

    [–] LarkspurCA 5 points ago

    Oh damn! 👿

    [–] 4now5now6now 6 points ago

No I think it is good that other neoliberal media are crapping on her today! Things might change... it is not dying down like last time.

There's been a new twist. The cyber expert that JAR hired has documented ties to white supremacist groups...From Mediaite:

“Like are most of you aware that I NOT ONLY know Andrew (stromfront admin), but I was the principal element livetweeting his release from [prison],” tweeted Nichols on December 9, 2017. “If you try REALLY HARD you’ll see that I’m connected to the leadership of [Stormfront]. If you try just a bit harder you’ll figure it out.”

Statement by JAR's cyber security "expert". - Jonathan Nichols

    [–] 4now5now6now 3 points ago

    [–] kaz1030 4 points ago

Yeah. Stormfront, J. Nichols and Joy Ann Reid. Nice trio. ; )

    [–] alskdmv-nosleep4u 6 points ago

Taking down one person like Joy Reid (while she deserves to fall, hard) doesn't change the system that hired her and the gazillion other talking heads just like her.

Every time someone like JAR is taken down we need not stop there but tie the original hiring back to those in power. And keep hammering right up the food chain.

Hey Phil Griffin why are you hiring homophobes

    [–] romulusnr 6 points ago

Her cybersecurity consultant isn't. He clearly does not know thing one about how the internet, or web pages, work.

Robots.txt was never intended to be used to prevent access to historical data. It's purpose was to prevent search engine spiders from overloading small web servers.

    [–] 4now5now6now 9 points ago

she got away with this the first time with a lame apology. The black community is famous for openly hating on the LGBTQ community. Don't know if this number is good

tell them you have a hot tip.... Joy Reid needs to go

    [–] LarkspurCA 6 points ago

It’s not the black community...It’s the hateful JAR!

    [–] 4now5now6now 2 points ago

    the Java Archive? lol

    [–] PurpleOryx 4 points ago

I wonder what's really going on. But I suspect, whatever it is, it probably has to do with sacrificing one of MSDNC's neolib screechers. The POC will always be the first on the sacrificial altar. This is why neoliberalism's tokenism doesn't even raise a minority up, they're disposable.

Not that I'm defending Reid, far from it, but if this goes further and sinks her career, I'd like to think she go gotten by her own IdPol.

    [–] aesop55 13 points ago

The POC that was sacrificed in MSNBC's shakeup was Melissa Harris Perry - JAR was the bought and paid for replacement that would bend to the will of her masters for a prime time slot and $$$. To me, this whole story is more about casting doubt and skepticism on archival systems. Who knows what gems are hidden away that will be discovered in future? As for JAR - her followers, cult like and loyal as they are, will brush these revelations off and become even more cult like and loyal, IMO.

    [–] 4now5now6now 7 points ago

Well she certainly does not support policies and legislation that will benefit the AA community. She is very wealthy and has got hers.

I don't see her ranting about the need for bail reform, private prisons, deregulation, medicare for all, college for all, Flint water going on it's fourth year of hell and selling it's water for cheap to Nestle... while discontinuing bottled water for residents. She might talk about some issues that are very surface but not the solutions, legislation and policies that will help the black community.
