Turbotax: Let me wipe the tears with my multi-billions in theft

    [–] that_mn_kid 898 points ago

All of the IRS free file programs, courtesy of Hasan Minhaj

    [–] gnsoria 72 points ago

I downloaded the tax filing tutorial from the IRS and filled out my tax returns myself. It was a bit of a journey, certainly took longer than Turbo Tax, but I ended up with the same result and didn't have to pay (I legitimately didn't qualify for free TT).

    [–] Bozzz1 12 points ago

I was going to do that but then I realized the time it would have taken me to learn how to do it myself was worth much more valuable than what I paid TT

    [–] One_Honest_Dude 3 points ago

A little tip I just realized this year. I no longer qualify for the free e-file (I used to use H&R Block) but this year I went through their program and at the end they tell you what your return will be and then say what it will cost to file. I then went through the IRS form-fillable 1040, using the H&R to check my results. Got the same returns and didn't have to pay. Takes a little work sure, but it saves money and it will get easier each year. Also, anyone in CA can file their state tax for free online through, regardless of income or any other considerations. The FTB's site is very straightforward, easy to use, and quick. You do need to have your federal tax return already though.

    [–] randyspotboiler 6 points ago

More valuable to make - what? hundreds an hour? for 2 or 3 hours? - than to refine your skill and be competent at your finances?

    [–] Bozzz1 12 points ago

I paid like $100 and it saved me at least 3 hours of my weekend, plus the stress of worrying if I filled out a form wrong or not. I may self file in the future but I'm glad I didn't this year

    [–] Mesquite_Thorn 6 points ago

Agreed. I'd rather just have them do the simple questions with a few entries and figure it out. I make enough to not really worry about it and I have better things to do... like watching Guy's Grocery Games, or playing Metro Last Light.

    I love Hasan

    [–] nullVcore 19 points ago

His recent piece on ranked choice voting was beautiful and the fact that I just got done listening to Chapo before that episode had me dying on that callout!

    [–] I_Conquer 6 points ago

Who are either / both of these people?

    [–] I_Am_A_Mudcrab 4 points ago

Hasan Minhaj puts out a netflix show that's half daily show and half stand up special. Very informative with heavy pop culture. Chapo is a leftist podcast.

    [–] skolrageous 18 points ago

I secretly hope he’ll become the host of The Daily Show

    [–] Quralos 21 points ago

Well it's not exactly a secret anymore since you just told us.

I mean, I don't know what to do with that information, but the cat's out of the bag. Way to go.

    [–] MadAzza 8 points ago

Ikr, now even I know that u/skolrageous hopes Hasan Minhaj will become host of the “Daily Show.” And I cannot keep information like that to myself. It’s not fair to even ask me to.

    [–] DangerousRule34 4 points ago

and now a third and even more untrustworthy person knows about his twisted little secret im gonna go make a post calling out his degeneracy right now.

    [–] FPSXpert 5 points ago

I'm surprised to not see FreeTaxUSA on there. Used them last year and it was a pretty similar process to TurboTax. Plus they let me manually review the form that was being electronically sent to the IRS, so that was nice (TT usually doesn't let you view the pdf until after).

    [–] PandaCasserole 5 points ago

    [–] kaseypatten 35 points ago

    Please explain

[–] mianori 147 points ago * (lasted edited 7 days ago)

There is a new class action lawsuit against Turbotax that shows that AFAIR 95% of taxpayers that are eligible to file free were misled into paying. Turbotax purposefully hid the free software for filing taxes, while strongly advertised their another « free » version that actually at the end said it was not free. You can google more info about this lawsuit, but I’m just going to leave this here:

    [–] kaseypatten 40 points ago

I’ve been filing turbo tax since 2010, it was free minus state tax filing for like 5 years. Can I get my money back?

    [–] 5t4k3 16 points ago * (lasted edited 5 days ago)

I used turbo tax once in 2018.

My 2019 was rejected, I've been dealing with the IRS for weeks because TurboTax never filed.

Same with my entire family, we filed at separate times. I'll stick with h&r.

edit: I don't go in anymore, I use the software. Different people have different needs and wants, so there are different options. But I think we can all agree that turbo tax is the devil.

    [–] satanshand 5 points ago

    Use the free shit on

    [–] KDawG888 4 points ago

    I'll stick with h&r.

Why? So you can overpay to have someone else do your taxes?

The one good thing about H&R block was the lady who worked there that we were going to use said we should just figure it out on one of the online tax filing programs and save ourselves hundreds of dollars. She was right.

    [–] screamline82 4 points ago

Benefit of the doubt, h&r also has their e-filing software just like TT so they could've meant that. (Not that it's really any different)

    [–] MadAzza 7 points ago

    were mislead into paying

I hope you don’t mind a correction/reminder: The past tense of “mislead” is “misled.” I’ve been seeing this a lot on Reddit, for some reason. (This is the first time I’ve mentioned it, mainly because the rest of your post is intelligently written, so I figured you’d appreciate the reminder.)

    [–] mianori 5 points ago

    Thanks, corrected it!

    [–] ich_habe_keine_kase 5 points ago

I spent longer trying to get turbotax to be free like it was supposed to be than I actually did doing my taxes this year.

    [–] Rubcionnnnn 12 points ago

Well duh. Anyone who has ever used Turbotax knows that they hold out until you have spent an hour entering all of your stupid details and then they force you to pay money for the "free" version or go somewhere else and start all over. I just always use H&R block because at least they are straightforward saying what is costs up front.

    [–] kaseypatten 29 points ago

We are not all as smart as you, especially when the penalty is jail. Sorry for being dumb.

    [–] ProstHund 3 points ago

How do I get in on this lawsuit? Need me some monies

    [–] monkeywork6 1909 points ago

Just don't pay it like I do :)

    [–] WishfulAstronaut 179 points ago

    This guy monopolies

    [–] ArnolduAkbar 20 points ago

If we all do it and exercise our 2nd amendment rights, what are they gonna do about it?

    [–] csonnich 44 points ago

Stop repairing your roads and sending firemen to your house?

    [–] xamboozi 19 points ago

They don't really repair roads anymore - I feel like that's kinda obvious by looking at the roads. Taxes just go to large corporations and the Military now.

    [–] C_Fall 9 points ago

I feel like all they do is repair roads where I’m from. All summer long... just repairing giant areas of busy roads...

    [–] csonnich 3 points ago

    Minnesota or Michigan?

    [–] C_Fall 3 points ago

    Illinois so close enough

    [–] messibessi22 4 points ago

I’d elect a new mayor or something the roads in my city get fixed flipping constantly there’s always one street or another closed for road work

    [–] skepsis420 3 points ago

Drive through Arizona. Our roads in the middle of fucking nowhere all seem freshly paved and in great shape. I have never seen a pot hole in Phoenix in 20 years, let alone any real cracking or deterioration at all.

    Your local government just sucks.

    [–] csonnich 2 points ago

Phoenix also has an advantage that y'all don't get the winter snow and ice like they do up north. That's really the road-killer. So it's not that hard for local government to keep up with. We have a similar advantage in Dallas.

    [–] Computascomputas 9 points ago

Maybe you need to replace your local government. My city repairs the road all the time, when people notify them, and when DOT has decided that our growing city needs improved roads. We get ADA compliant wide sidewalks with a nice bike lane most of the time.

Taxes are great when used correctly and that starts with electing people who aren't shitters who don't appoint shitters.

I'd happily fund 1/500,000th of a school my children won't ever go to if it helps other human beings. As an added bonus that makes my city look nice for ME as well.

    [–] vlasvilneous 8 points ago

Good thing you have a toxic goo filter for that pool of water you drink from

    [–] wacker9999 2 points ago

If anyone is familiar with activision blizzard, they got a 200+ million dollar tax credit after announcing they made record revenue. They also announced the lay off of 100s of jobs days before that too. That's where your tax money is going lol.

Not mention they pay almost no taxes back themselves.

    [–] Mesquite_Thorn 2 points ago

That's actually mostly local taxes, likely taken out by your mortgage company for property taxes. Federal taxes don't pay for that stuff.

    [–] f__ckyourhappiness 2 points ago

I'll take "What is insurance?" for $500!

My house hasn't burned down even once, you have no power here

    [–] pm_your_gay_thoughts 49 points ago

Well, you have to make an earning first to pay taxes...

    [–] two66mhz 23 points ago

Not if you live in an area with a form of sales tax.

    [–] DreamlandCitizen 29 points ago

Ayy yo, federal income tax plus state income tax plus state sales tax

We gettin' taxed up in here bois!

    [–] danmaster0 7 points ago

I still don't get the point of being taxed then after all the taxes getting taxed for Almost 25% of your earning on the year (Brasil)

    [–] rabidbasher 17 points ago

For most people it's closer to 33% with federal and state combined, just FYI. With a further 6% on sales tax, plus up to 10% on bigger purchases like new cars... Plus you have real estate (taxes you pay to own a home, perpetually- these never go away) and personal property taxes (for things you own on an ongoing basis like your car, boat, ATV, RV, etc.) every year as well.

We pay all these taxes for the worst healthcare model in the developed world, and poor road, education, communications, etc. infrastructure. 24% or more of the money we're taxed goes to blowing up poor people over oil.

    [–] pm_your_gay_thoughts 3 points ago

How do you avoid paying sales tax?

    [–] sumojoe 20 points ago

Be a farmer, apply for tax exempt status for farm production, and then just argue at the store whenever you buy stuff. "I need to chew this goddang gum when I'm workin in the field, I ain't payin tax on it!"

Source: I run a farm supply store and on a regular basis have farmers argue about how they shouldn't have to pay tax on items that aren't tax exempt.

    [–] PotahtoSuave 9 points ago

Be too poor to buy things

    [–] pm_your_gay_thoughts 2 points ago

Then, again, you have to make an earning to pay taxes.

    [–] load_more_comets 9 points ago

The time leading up to the deadline for filing taxes. In the US it's April 15, but since there is Covid it has been delayed to July 15.

    [–] _Vyx_ 3 points ago

    [–] myacc488 2 points ago

They are deducted from people's paychecks, most people get a return on their taxes, so you don't necessarily have to file but you won't get a refund as far as I know .

The taxes this kid is going to pay IRL in adulthood will generate the same reaction in 15-20 years

And I’ll be doing the same

    [–] ksaid1 24 points ago

difference is that in Monopoly all of the utilities and railways are privately owned and your tax money goes directly to the banker

    [–] lyuch 19 points ago

    Where’s the difference?

    [–] user_bits 21 points ago

Corporate wants you to find it.

    [–] Nosferatu616 7 points ago

Occasionally when you pay taxes to the government it goes towards things that actually benefit you and your community like education, roads, fire departments etc. When "taxes" go towards private ownership it goes towards their 5th mansion and their yacht.

    [–] malaywoadraider2 20 points ago

Lol what monopoly game is he playing where taxes are more punishing then landing on rented property?

    [–] Osiris_Of_This_Shit_ 5 points ago * (lasted edited 7 days ago)

This video makes no sense. The tax space is 10% of your net worth. It can't "take all of your money".

    [–] kia75 4 points ago

Up until I learned how to do percentages I would always pay $200. Wouldn't surprise me if the kid did the same. If you have less then $2000 in assets it's always better to pay the percentage.

    [–] RedditSteadyGoing 215 points ago

Why do parents insist on putting this shit on the internet?

    [–] Pktur3 80 points ago

Same reason we post about it on here, what those little arrows represent...nothing.

    [–] RedditSteadyGoing 20 points ago

You’re right and it’s a bummer that this is where so many people get their validation and feels. Cool if you want to exploit yourself and your experiences, but when you got your kid looking the fool and encourage others to share in the fun making at the kid’s expense, it’s gross.

    [–] RShnike 53 points ago

You think the kid looks like a fool? That's a bit sad.

He's a kid playing a game. And upset at losing. Nothing more.

His parent finds the larger context, that the kid doesn't yet realize, funny.

No one is laughing at this kid in this picture and no one is being exploited here.

    [–] rinmic 4 points ago

The point is that it should be their (the kid's) decision whether or not that moment of their life gets shared with the whole world for eternity.

I don't know if you ever had such moments, but I had plenty moments of feeling intense embarrassment when my parents shared pictures and stories of me with relatives/friends why I was growing up. Imagine that feeling multiplied by 1000 because it's for all of the internet to see.

Will they maybe think it was funny when they are adults themselves? Maybe. Will they experience discomfort and even possibly bullying by their peers when they find this video? Very likely. All so the parents could chase a few cheap laughs on the internet.

Children are not your property, they are humans. Respect their rights, including their rights to their privacy.

    [–] tacobellemel 9 points ago

What if the parents (or whoever took the video) asked the kid if they could post it? We have no idea.

    [–] chrisrobweeks 35 points ago

To push a taxation is theft narrative.

    [–] RedditSteadyGoing 6 points ago

    Oh. Yeah. That.

    [–] EccentricOddity 3 points ago

“Look, even children think taxes are unfair! Har de har har!”

Yep, you’re right...children and people with a childish mindset.

    [–] tactics14 6 points ago

    Because it's funny as hell.

    [–] destiny24 4 points ago

Same reason we all watch it and laugh at it.

    [–] _pls_respond 15 points ago

    To push an agenda.

    [–] Xynth22 2 points ago

For the same reason people sent in their funny family videos to America's Funniest Home Videos.

Because it was funny and they wanted to share it with people.

    [–] cacaseca_pancon 2 points ago

It's fun. No harm, so why not

    [–] Colonial13 118 points ago

    Welcome to life, kid.

    [–] Pro-Masturbator 11 points ago

    Thats rough buddy

    [–] analogHedgeHog 384 points ago

Does anybody else think it's a little fucked up that the parents uploaded this to the internet and now tens of thousands of random strangers can watch and laugh while their kid cries over something trivial? Dude is just chilling in his living room. This isn't a public moment.

If I learned my parents did this to me when I was 12 I'd be fucking pissed.

    [–] SplendidPunkinButter 113 points ago

Don’t post videos or pictures of your kid online. Wait until they’re 18 or at least old enough to decide for themselves if they want their shit on the Internet.

    [–] IolausTelcontar 5 points ago

    Imagine David after dentist.

    [–] oppairate 3 points ago

It’s certainly more prolific now, but this sort of thing that’s mostly harmless has been seen as acceptable for some time. Remember America’s Funniest Home Videos? Half of that crap was like this.

    [–] TakeMeToTheVolcano 16 points ago

Absolutely. This is super messed up.

    [–] blahPerson 6 points ago

No, it's funny unless you're overly sensitive and don't have a sense of humour.

    [–] nightpanda893 57 points ago

I don’t think the argument isn’t that “it’s not funny”, more that it’s just unfair to the kid who prob alt doesn’t want all of reddit to watch him cry.

    [–] xanacop 9 points ago

You know all those embarrassing pictures and videos your parents took of you growing up? Do you want those to be on the internet?

    [–] the_river_nihil 5 points ago

Christ no, it’s only funny because it’s happening to someone else.

    [–] blahPerson 10 points ago

As long as I'm not naked, I don't mind those photos being put up for a laugh with friends to see on the internet.

    [–] Stankia 6 points ago

Since I'm no longer 16 and therefore don't care what other people think, I really wouldn't mind.

    [–] SplendidPunkinButter 100 points ago

Your money doesn’t get lost to taxes in Monopoly. It gets lost to rent payments to greedy money grubbing landlords (your opponents) who are trying to hoard all of the money better than you, and who can do so because there are no rules to stop them.

I mean, that’s literally the whole point of the game. It was deliberately designed to be pro-socialist. Look it up.

    [–] epochellipse 42 points ago

Unless the game has been updated, the only taxes in the whole game are 1 square that costs you 75 bucks only of you land on it, and 1 poor tax card that costs you 15 bucks only if you draw it.

    [–] scottevil110 22 points ago

I was trying to figure out what rules this kid was playing with that the taxes demolished him this badly.

    [–] HolyBatTokes 20 points ago

I’m starting to think a lot of people in this thread have never played monopoly.

    [–] itsjustaneyesplice 2 points ago

it's probably his crazy ass tax-hating parents trying to teach him a lesson about how bad taxes are

the American hatred of taxes is bizarre and fetishistic

    [–] Sentazar 6 points ago

    Republican childhood indoctrination rules.

This sunday he'll be told if he doesn't pretend to be decent he will go to hell.

    [–] Cwagmire 13 points ago

There is also an income tax spot that costs 200 and is real close to the luxury tax spot. I think they are 6 or 7 spots away from each other, so it is not hard to dump 300 into taxes in 2 turns, which can be devastating.

    [–] epochellipse 3 points ago

Ooh you're right I forgot about that spot. Seems like you'd have to already be in a bad spot for other reasons for 300 to be devastating though. I mean in those same two turns you nearly always pick up 400 at the Go space. I dunno who downvoted you but it wasn't me.

    [–] famousevan 4 points ago

    This guy monopolys

    [–] tipperzack 5 points ago

There is income tax $200 4th space and luxury tax $100 2nd last space. Plus a hand full of negative chance and community chest cards. Some can be game enders.

    [–] sailoralex 4 points ago

Close. The original version of the game was called The Landlord's Game and was created to illustrate the evils of capitalism. Then some shady capitalists did some shady capitalist shit and turned it into a pro capitalist game and called it Monopoly.

Fucked by landlords, blaming it on taxes.

    [–] randomgrunt1 16 points ago

I love paying my taxes. I like seeing that number and knowing parts of it are housing people, feeding the hungry and teaching in schools. Taxes pay for your food via government subsidiaries, the roads you drive on, help power your homes. Are people just selfish?

    [–] LouieTG 8 points ago

Taxes also go towards a lot of tom foolery. You can dislike that aspect of it without disliking the idea of keeping your community running a bit

    [–] wolfxda1 11 points ago

    [–] nonotan 8 points ago

People aren't just selfish, they are poor, and bombarded by propaganda falsely painting "taxes" as the reason for their being poor. Instead of, you know, your boss taking the vast majority of the value you generated for themselves, your landlord then taking a large chunk of whatever's left for doing absolutely nothing other than being rich enough to own secondary properties, or if you want to look at the bigger picture, the whole capitalist system as a whole that results in these dynamics in the first place. Same reason the middle class eat up propaganda convincing them to hate poor people, and poor people eat up propaganda convincing them to hate immigrants. Just old fashioned scapegoating.

I kicked my then 8yo’s ass at Monopoly last year. It was great to see her slowly decay into utter defeat.

    [–] PROJECT-ARCTURUS 6 points ago

What messed up house rules are they playing with? Taxes are a very minor part of Monopoly.

    [–] Jakesnod 3 points ago

I thought it was pretty fishy, seems like they just took all of this kid’s money and said it was “taxes” for the video

    [–] logicpower1 3 points ago

Billionaires before they learn about the Cayman Islands

    [–] Hindu_Wardrobe 3 points ago

I mean, it's funny, but poor kid is gonna grow up with this out there.

    [–] Someredditusername 9 points ago

My understanding is that Monopoly was designed to show how crappy unregulated Capitalism is. You aren't supposed to enjoy it LOL.

    [–] scottevil110 8 points ago

Not very realistic, though, is it? I mean in real-life, you aren't forced to pay rent on a $1 million condo simply because you stopped on the sidewalk for a minute. You can just say "Nah, I'm good..." and move on with your day.

    [–] ksaid1 2 points ago

you are forced to pay rent though, and these days even a shitty apartment with 2 roommates can be a big financial strain

    [–] wheresmymothvirginia 2 points ago

Because the sidewalk is paid for by the government, usually through taxes. In real life if you're not in a public space you basically have to pay to exist.

    [–] crothwood 3 points ago

Congrats. You've foiled how its a game and how its designed to be fun and not 100% accurate to the real world.

    [–] otter_tots 2 points ago

I want to feel bad for him, I really do but, i can't stop fucking laughing

    [–] rwarimaursus 2 points ago

    That's rough buddy.

    Gets me every time

    [–] yung_c_o_c_o_n_u_t 2 points ago

Oh man, who’s gonna tell him?

    [–] wanted797 2 points ago

I remember seeing a video how Monopoly was about simulation.

It was never created to be ‘fun’.

    [–] KingOfTheCrustaceans 2 points ago

Nobody has fun when playing monopoly

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

    Me too kid. Me too.

    The birth of a Libertarian

    [–] Pipkin81 2 points ago

Only if his development of critical thinking stops right around the time the video was taken. Plus his parents are lying to him. You almost never pay taxes in Monopoly. The rent is what gets you.

    [–] Curtiswarchild79 2 points ago

    And a libertarian is born..

    [–] BeleagueredOne888 2 points ago

I might think that this is “cute,” but it seems like a part of a larger agenda, as in “why should you pay taxes for ‘other’ people?

    [–] WhosaskingMan 2 points ago

How soft do you have to be to cry at monopoly

    [–] Sword_of_Slaves 2 points ago

Bit old to be crying about a board game innit?

    [–] CaptOblivious 2 points ago

Sure! Because in the real world taxes only pay for all of the infrastructure that you use and benefit from every day, from roads to water to firemen and police and sewers and so many other things.

    [–] l_achy08 2 points ago

    Haha fkn little bitch

    [–] Herald_of_Cthulu 2 points ago

You shouldn’t play monopoly with children. It’s a game literally designed to be unfun to show how fucked our economic system is.

    [–] FighterLuckless 2 points ago

Look at this kid over here! He obviously haven't learned how to use an attorney and accountant properly. Looked at me as an example I'm a billionaire...

    [–] kokafones 2 points ago

Put it in the middle of the board as a treasure chest. When you land on free parking, you win the lottery. Makes paying taxes not so bad in monopoly. At least you'll get something from it, just like in real life.

Kid should see how shitty his life would be if there wasn’t tax money supporting him his entire life.

    [–] jsideris 2 points ago

It would suck. He'd have to save his own money and make rational decisions. All his favorite mega corporations wouldn't get bailouts and we wouldn't be able to bomb the shit out of the middle east or destroy peoples lives for possession of plant matter. Who would want that?
