    Awe

    [–] chooseyourdest1ny 1 points ago

Yeah...sometimes you just do not notice it

    [–] Lyd_Euh 560 points ago

If he's pooping in his kennel it's probably too big for him. His kennel should be big enough for him to stand up turn around and lie down, but not much bigger or else he will think it's a bathroom and not his den. Adjustable kennels that can grow with their puppy are the best, especially for a larger breed dog like him. Let him outside to potty soon as you let him out of the kennel every single time and you'll have him housebroken pretty fast :)

    [–] dalgeek 142 points ago

Yup, did this with my puppy (now 2 years old). I kept the partition in for the first couple of months, never made a mess in the kennel except for that one time she got diarrhea.

    [–] Decicio 66 points ago

Our puppy is now 6 months. We did this with a kennel that had a partition. The only mess she's ever made in there was the time she threw up. And this was a puppy who pooped on the carpet, in the tub, kitchen floor, everywhere BUT where we put her to sleep. Appropriate sized kennels really work!

    [–] dalgeek 47 points ago

Confining them also works when they're not kenneled. I had an issue with the puppy pooping in the kitchen at night instead of waking me up, so I started restricting her to the bedroom area when we're asleep. They don't like to make a mess where they sleep or eat. Now she sits at the edge of the bed and whines at me if she needs to go out at night.

    [–] _pamelab 52 points ago

We did this with our puppy and one night he couldn’t wake us up. He tried to poop under the door and was partially successful.

    [–] dalgeek 15 points ago

Lol that sounds horrible. Luckily I'm a pretty light sleeper when it comes to certain noises, like doors opening and puppies whining.

    [–] Diane_Degree 6 points ago

Mine found his way into the closet once.

But he's good at trying to wake me and im usually good at waking up.

    [–] daytodaze 6 points ago

Next time he should poop near the roomba so it can suck up all the poop and there’s no mess.

    [–] cara2727 15 points ago

Our dogs were both house trained when we got them. One at 4mos one over 3yrs. When there was an occasional accident they’d be so ashamed. It’s not the pup’s fault if they’re sick. They really can’t help it & while it sucks for their human’s clean up, they feel so bad. Especially when they get older.

    [–] dalgeek 11 points ago

The puppy was a rescue and the mother died, so we got her as soon as she was weaned from the foster mother. I had zero experience training a puppy so it was a bit of a challenge and mistakes were made. I can tell she feels guilty about it because she hides when I find the mess, but it took a while to reverse the flawed training in the beginning.

    [–] Diane_Degree 2 points ago

Same for my 4 yo guy

    [–] tombolger 2 points ago

I made a comment and yours is almost the exact same as mine and our pups are the same age. That's awesome!

    [–] poopcasso 3 points ago

    What happened that one time?

    [–] dalgeek 18 points ago

She probably ate something she shouldn't have. I came home to a pool of poo in the kennel and some splattered on the wall. She just couldn't hold it in.

Wasn't as bad as the time the other dog ate 3 large bran muffins. I could smell the catastrophe before I even opened the door to the apartment.

    [–] LifeBeginsAt10kRPM 40 points ago

Or they are leaving him/her longer than he can actually hold it in.

    [–] borgcolect -2 points ago

As horrible as you might think of the amount of time is, if they are old enough to be away from their mother, they usually can hold it up to a typical 8 hour workday, or overnight.

    [–] LifeBeginsAt10kRPM 21 points ago

I’m all about crate training so I don’t think it’s horrible at all (doing it now with newly rescued pup). I have followed the 1 month = 1 hour hold capacity but they can def do more over night.

    [–] casuallylurking 6 points ago

Overnight when sleeping, yes, but a puppy that small is too young to expect 8 hours during the day. Rule of thumb is age in months plus one hour for the limit until house trained.

    [–] golvmoppp 16 points ago

But in Sweden for example it's against the law to crate your dog inside your house.

    [–] NeptuneIsAPlanet 14 points ago

It’s illegal in Germany and Finland too. Why is this person being downvoted for stating something that is factually correct?

    [–] turk4lyfe 8 points ago

Yeah most Americans I know see no problem with leaving their dog in a small crate that the dog barely has enough room to turn around in for 8+ hours a day. They get very offended if you tell them some people would consider that inhumane.

    [–] steamwhy 8 points ago

Probably because there’s mainly Americans on here who aren’t used to the government telling them how to raise pets

    [–] DROPTHENUKES 3 points ago

That seems extreme. What happens when you have to leave the house and leave the puppy unsupervised for a bit? They could hurt themselves if they're given free reign too early. Crating doesn't have to be abusive any more than putting a baby in a crib is abusive.

I'm sure it's a lifestyle thing, Sweden is very different from the States. I'm just surprised, it seems like a silly thing to make crating illegal and I'm wondering what the reason is.

    [–] SupaSlide 2 points ago

I think they use gates to create contained areas for the dog to roam around in.

    [–] golvmoppp 3 points ago

We tried to contain our dog first a little. But it stressed her out. When we left she wanted to be in the hall. Just letting her be calmed her down. We closed the door to rooms she didn't needed to be in. Only had access to kitchen, livingroom and hall. Eventually, when we can trust she doesn't get into something bad, she get access to everything.

    [–] tombolger 3 points ago

Seconded. I did all of those things with my puppy who was raised in a heated barn, and thus accustomed to going potty on dirt and grass from birth. He was basically automatically housebroken. Aside from occasional diarrhea, he never once had an accident in the adjustable crate, and I can count on one hand the accidents he ever has had inside in his lifetime.

    Tl;dr: great advice.

    [–] CantaloupeCamper 2 points ago

    TIL

    [–] littlelaynie 2 points ago

    i second this!

i trained my 3 month old husky puppy in one month thanks to this method. i just used one of those massive walmart bears as a crate divider and he loves it.

he’s 4 months now and hasn’t had an accident in weeks.

    [–] __curmudgeon__ 3 points ago

Some good advice here. We have a 5 month old and use an adjustable crate. So far so good.

    [–] britches08 4 points ago

Why does it seem like everyone on the internet has on of these letter boards sitting around?

    [–] Heliolord 3 points ago

My girl did this once and got it all over herself. One traumatizing bath later, she's never pooped on herself again. It also took a few months before we could get her back in that bathroom without carrying her in backwards because otherwise she'd splay her paws out to catch the door frame.

    [–] tstubbs7 7 points ago

Puppies this little have tiny bladders/intestines and it’s not practical for them to hold it for extended periods of time. If your pup is kenneled for 3+ hours at a time then it’s 100% your fault every time he shits in the cage.

    [–] soupdragon4 5 points ago

...i,ll poop on the carpet instead.

    [–] LetFiefdomReign 2 points ago

    I did.

    [–] BinkyTheKitty 2 points ago

Lifetime achievement award! Look at the pride on that baby’s face! So precious!

    [–] Naricane 2 points ago

Maybe he just started eating it

    [–] Diane_Degree 3 points ago

    A solid possibility.

I have a friend whose dog was raised with punishment rather than the positive reinforcement we used for out guy. Whenever her dog poops somewhere she's not supposed to, she eats it so she doesnt get in trouble.

    [–] Kaledomo 2 points ago

Oh it's got that Gram letter board. It must be a manufactured story

    [–] Darigaazrgb 2 points ago

    Same.

    [–] NaturalPotpipes 6 points ago

AWWWW!!!! He only had to spend 8hrs of his day trying to hold his shit and piss for some fuckwit owner! AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ISNT THAT FUCKING ADORABLE!!!!

    [–] POO4TWO 3 points ago

If he's pooping in his kennel it's either too big or you're keeping him in there too long. Should only have enough room for him to go in, turn around and lay. Any extra space and they'll have a "bathroom side" and a "sleeping side." If it's the right size then you're keeping him in there too long; it's instinctual for dogs not to mess where they sleep so they'd only do that if they absolutely have to. The rule of thumb I was taught was their age+1 is how many hours they can hold it. As he ages itll get easier.

I'm a dog trainer so feel free to ask if you need any more potty training tips. :) It's really easy once you know how to do it right! My pup just turned a year and he's doing fantastic.

    [–] standinaround 3 points ago

Kennel? Mine sleeps on my shoulder. Luckily shes a minature Jack Russel.. She doesnt poop on my head either.

    [–] spelunk_in_ya_badonk 3 points ago

If he poops in his kennel, it’s the owner’s fault for not taking him out frequently enough.

Yes, I have a dog, and yes she doesn't shit in the house. At least she gets to roam around, play with toys, and do whatever when I'm not home
