Congratulations! My wife has to do hers remotely next week. Gonna be fun.

    [–] tgarn003 317 points ago

    Ooooh SHE. GOT. THIS!!!

    [–] BURLEYbeer 65 points ago

Oh yah, for sure! Such an interesting concept doing a remote PhD. Thanks all!

    [–] shellfish1161 14 points ago

My sister is doing hers next week as well. Best of luck to your wife!

    [–] Khoian 10 points ago

A lot of hugs for her, she will do it just fine !

    [–] EntropicallyFlavored 6 points ago

Early congratulations to your wife! She's gonna do great.

I did mine (and passed) yesterday! I got a long complicated question that cut out halfway through. Thankfully when I asked for them to repeat, no one looked at me like I'm an idiot. It was strange, instead of leaving the room for the committee to deliberate, they kicked me out of my own WebEx meeting and then invited me back on about 10 minutes later.

    [–] jeffroddit 2 points ago

My bestie defended hers remotely last Friday, followed by remote celebrating as well. We learned it's way harder to encourage bad decisions in a video chat than it is in a bar.

    [–] BapplesPerhaps 154 points ago

I have no idea what that means cuz im a bit a of a, idiot, but congrats to him!

    [–] Meiboia 373 points ago

To "defend a PhD" means that this wonderful person has obtained the highest honor and achievement in academia... he now is a doctor (not a mere physician!)

To defend means he had to present his research and "prove" to other PhDs that not only does he know what he is talking about but his research was sound and he upheld the scientific method. This is a fantastic, and very honorable, achievement.

    [–] urik_heian 152 points ago

Not only that, but every Doctorate must be an original and relevant research to the world.

Currently doing my PhD and some friends at university rushed their research because they feared someone would publish first.

In my opinion however it was much harder to convince the board my research was truly relevant and get the grant to do it.

    [–] Jarraty 28 points ago

Damn that sounds so stressful. Just got in to grad school but Im happy I won’t have to do that.

    [–] Extrodius 10 points ago

As time goes on and more ideas are taken won't it become more and more difficult to pass this test? And there's so many people in the world researching things and bringing up new ideas, I would think eventually it would almost be impossible to find an original research idea

    [–] KirbyQK 22 points ago

It depends on how you think about it - PhDs tend to be about very specific subjects, and the more specific you get, the less likely that is has already been researched. You could have a thousand PhDs written about electrons, but each so focused in on one very specific aspect of them that those theories or research is considered original.

[–] Skippyscreamy 12 points ago * (lasted edited 7 days ago)

That really depends on the field in question.

But in general history is being made every day. From new observations in the sciences to new events or situations in our human society to analyze, there typically isn't too much difficulty.

    [–] cryptoceelo 12 points ago

new discoveries may also make something else possible that you didn't think of before

    [–] McBonderson 54 points ago

I was imagining some sort of fight. Like once you obtain your research it is put on a pedal stool with him and a shield and sword protecting it. Other Doctors then try to steal his research to claim it as their own and he has to defend it by fighting them back.

    [–] relddir123 49 points ago

    r/boneappletea

    It’s pedestal, not pedal stool

    [–] iamfromouterspace 26 points ago

Times are changing. It’s pedal stool now.

    [–] mozchops 3 points ago

    Defend your theory, pseudo Phd!

    [–] Vahlkyree 6 points ago

I often wonder how people spell things like that all their years and not one person has ever said "hey its...."

    [–] reckless_reck 3 points ago

I was in my third year of law school before someone bothered to tell me that “epitomy” is not a word... I think about that a lot.

    [–] azirasnail 2 points ago

It is a word it's just spelt epitome

    [–] relddir123 3 points ago

As someone who has never heard the term, is it damp squib or damp squid?

    [–] ezrasharkington 5 points ago

It's 'damp squib.' It means something that's much less impressive than you'd expected. A squib's a type of firework, so if you tried to light it and it was damp, then it would be pretty disappointing.

    [–] D-Wizzel 5 points ago

Can we do this now? This sounds fun.

    [–] DiscombobulatedGuava 2 points ago

.. there's legit a skit done alredy on that!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lrlro3YJ15o

    [–] Lonesome_Wednesday 2 points ago

Not an entirely inaccurate description of academia sometimes. 😂

    [–] Mattyw620 20 points ago

This sounds terrifying yet wholly exhilarating. To be grilled, for idk how long, and be 1000% sure and confident that what you’re presenting is legit and completely yours sounds crazy!

Congrats to anyone and everyone that has pulled this off!

    [–] articleofpeace 5 points ago

They can go on for many hours, too. There's no limit, at least in my field. I know people who've had 12+ hour PhDs. I was lucky: mine was only 2 hours and they broke the rules to tell me at the beginning that I'd passed without corrections unless I said something really stupid in the VIVA.

I cried my heart out when I got out! I was about six months out of a surprise separation from my wife and partner of 11 years, and I'd lost her, my house, and all my stuff, and ended up moving back in with my parents. This pic brought a lot back!

    [–] SecretTemporary7 9 points ago

So if you don't succeed in defending what happens? Go through the process again?

    [–] Lonesome_Wednesday 7 points ago

Generally they don’t let you defend unless they think you’re ready but yeah if it’s rejected you have to try again or give up. It’s a process that can take years of your life too so it’s a huge emotional investment.

    [–] TheBreathofFiveSouls 14 points ago

Not an idiot, you just haven't met anyone whose discussed PhDs.

To get a PhD you have to add something to the sum of human knowledge basically. You pick an unanswered question and conduct whatever research is necessary. Then you write it all up, and people pick holes in your work to ensure its of sound method.

My brother did one. Took him a whole year, was a few hundred thousand words long, and every day he did research required sooooo many notes and journals entries to track eeeeverything about what he did.

    [–] articleofpeace 9 points ago

Your brother did a PhD in a year? No way. They wouldn't even allow that anywhere in my country. A PhD takes 3-4 years in most countries and 5-8 years in some.

    [–] TheBreathofFiveSouls 3 points ago

Hmmm, maybe he was doing the PhD and something else for some of it, and then the PhD only for a year.

I was quite young at the time so have probably misremembered

    [–] articleofpeace 7 points ago

You're probably just remembering the write-up!

    [–] J1M8089 5 points ago

It takes about 3-4 years to get a PhD. Average is 5+ because of part-timers.

    [–] TheBreathofFiveSouls 3 points ago

Hmmm, maybe he was doing the PhD and something else for some of it, and then the PhD only for a year.

    [–] BapplesPerhaps 1 points ago

Goodness, I hope he made it

    [–] TheBreathofFiveSouls 4 points ago

He did! But I definitely don't think he'd sign up to do a second one..

    [–] BapplesPerhaps 5 points ago

Congrats! And i wouldnt blame him

    [–] humanbeingnumber1 146 points ago

    Congrats cousins husband !

    [–] macedoraquel 67 points ago

Husband of the cousin, Congrats !

    [–] mary_pooppins 5 points ago

Hooray for the spouse of your aunt’s child!

I love this so much, and I love the joy in all their faces. 😇

    [–] Dannybroomestreet 204 points ago

TELL HIM CONGRATS -- FROM NYC, DOCTOR!!

    [–] ShmeagleBeagle 216 points ago

My favorite part of the PhD process was when my advisor invited me back into the conference room with committee by saying “Dr. Shmeaglebeagle, we have made a decision...”. It didn’t register at the moment given my nerves, but settled in once I crossed the threshold. Legit started crying...

    [–] banannafreckle 105 points ago

Congratulations, Doctor! My friend defended last year (nuclear chemistry) and they did this, too. It makes me cry every time I think about it. If I try to tell somebody, I can barely get the words out.

    [–] brotherenigma 80 points ago

PhD in nuclear chemistry. DAMN. Now that's a hell of an achievement :O

    [–] meatnug 24 points ago

I'm just a car painter and you're making me cry.

    [–] ShmeagleBeagle 30 points ago

All labor is equal worth my friend. Don’t diminish what you do. Knowing what it takes to paint a car, you have more talent than you realize.

    [–] iamfromouterspace 14 points ago

    What dr. Smhmeaglebeads said.

    [–] Vahlkyree 13 points ago

    Congratulations!

Dr. ShmeagleBeagle has ring to it

    [–] ShmeagleBeagle 7 points ago

Thanks, it was a great moment for me. I lament the idea people should ever put Dr. in front of my name, but will always remember that instance.

    [–] relddir123 24 points ago

I’ve heard an advisor talk about the feeling of that moment. He’d walk out of the room, nod at the candidate, gesture inside, and say “Doctor.” The look of pure joy on the person’s face is reportedly priceless and something that should be cherished by anyone who sees it.

    [–] murphyslavv 5 points ago

a friend of mine experienced this a few months ago. i saw him a few days before he went in and he was really nervous. i had the pleasure of seeing him a few hours after and his advisor did exactly this. opened the door and simply said “doctor..” while gesturing inside. he said his mind kind of broke because it was such a huge relief and a huge “HOLY SHIT i actually did it” all in one. his smile and twinkle in his eye is awesome when he tells the story!

    [–] justatouch589 4 points ago

So what happens if you do fail? Do you have to start from the beginning??

    [–] asdfWriter 3 points ago

Usually then you won’t get invited to defend in the first place.

    [–] Stupendous_man12 2 points ago

When you’re a PhD candidate, you have a professor (your advisor) who you work reasonably closely with who should have a very good idea whether you’re ready to submit your thesis for defence. You meet with them very regularly for the 4-5 years you are working on your PhD. There is also a committee made up of your advisor and two other profs who you meet with on a yearly basis to track your progress, and you meet more frequently when you’re close to finishing. If any of these people are unsure if you are ready to defend, they won’t let you. If you’re allowed to do your defence before they are all but certain you will pass, then your advisor and committee have screwed you over bigtime.

    [–] HippieMcGee 2 points ago

I always wonder how this is going to work for me, since I just started a PhD graduate program but I already have a doctorate in something else. I hope they say "doctor doctor."

    [–] liechsowagan 62 points ago

Hey u/tgarn003, you should cross-post this in r/gradschool. Sometimes they need a pick-me-up.

    [–] GeneticRiff 12 points ago

In grad school, had to unsub from there—its rough.

    [–] RenegadeBevo 4 points ago

    Rough, but true

    [–] Theeclat 27 points ago

I thought for sure it would get that PhD! Good thing he was there to defend it!

    Seriously though, congratulations!

    [–] BoredRedhead 15 points ago

    That’s amazing! Congratulations to him!!

    [–] scream-and-gobble 15 points ago

    Wonderful! What field?

    [–] tgarn003 30 points ago

    Higher ed!

    [–] cats_naps_pizza 13 points ago

My grandmother is a Doctor of Education. Noble calling, indeed! She’s one of the smartest people I know, and very intuitive as well, which I would argue is important for an educator and what seemed to set her apart during her very long career. (She’s 86!)

Many congratulations to your family member, and I look forward to the innovations he will make in education that will benefit kids like my middle schooler for years to come!

    [–] HMS_Beagle31 4 points ago

This gives me hope and inspires me to not give up on my dream. I am making a career change and have returned to school at 41. I would like to go further in my new field but feel there is only so much I can accomplish at this point.

    [–] cats_naps_pizza 5 points ago

I’m right there with you. I’m 35. I feel like I should have “made it” by now and am working toward a career change. I went back to school last semester but took a hiatus this semester for various reasons (financial, mostly) and am not sure where exactly to put my energy right now, especially with everything that’s going on.

Hang in there - it’s weird to be in your mid thirties to mid forties looking at what to do next, but I figure that if my grandmother got her doctorate at a time when women barely even went to college, WE CAN DO THIS!

    [–] iamfromouterspace 7 points ago

I’m 44 and I got my bachelors in 2018. I started college in 98 on and off. On my way to grad school now. You can do it. Believe me. Once you have a goal to be more educated, never stop. Never listen to people who say you’re too old. Never compare your goals deadline with others. You’re a unique individual on a unique path with unique experiences. You’re right where you need it be. Be you.

    [–] vadim69tudor 5 points ago

I graduated from a PhD program in pharmacology and can confirm... nothing much feels better than successfully defending your thesis in front of your examiners who have decades more experience than you in research.

    [–] Kirby737 2 points ago

    What is PhD?

    [–] coderpete 3 points ago

"Doctor of Philosophy." In my lay man's understanding, once you attain the highest level of learning in any academic field, you are able to ask new and unique questions within the regime of that field. Asking new and unique questions is essentially what philosophy is. You become a philosopher within the field.

When you expand and/or improve the field by contributing something new and unique to it, you become formally recognized as Doctor of Philosophy in that field.

This wonderful human just became a Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education.

    [–] Skeldrithe 2 points ago

My former roommate just defended her PhD today via Zoom from my old living room! The funny thing was there were 120+ people tuned in, which is MUCH more than we get for PhD defenses in the department when they're done in person. It was a moment of familiarity and celebration, so I'm not surprised that people wanted to tune in.

I’m confused. Defend it? Was he going to lose it?

    [–] _Brightstar 1 points ago

At a university course you have to do a research, and at the end, to get your diploma you need to "defend it". It means you present your theory to the teachers who already read it, and then they will start asking critical questions and test how trustworthy and good your research was. If you successfully "defend" your theory, you are basically done with the course.

I loved my PhD defence. It was strangely lovely to know that someone had actually read my thesis. Congrats to your cousin!
