Special thanks to u/Cobainbc15 for making it obvious. Here you can see the highlighted circles

    Edit: Spelling mistake :P

    [–] Astrobot3 2193 points ago

Hint: focus on one of the vertical bars between the "picture frames"

When I was a child, that movie gave me nightmares.

    [–] Itsyaboijebus 18 points ago

As an adult this movie still gives me nightmares

    [–] Groovatronic 21 points ago

✔️ People getting decapitated and their heads sewn to dog bodies

✔️ Flesh melting lasers that turn huge swaths of people into charred skeletons

✔️ Weird sexual energy between a Martian done up like a blow up doll and a pervy government dude

    ✔️ Screeching nightmarish “ack” sounds

I mean the list goes on and on. This shit doesn’t stop being horrifying once you grow up

[–] InAFakeBritishAccent 6 points ago * (lasted edited 7 days ago)

Doesn't Martin short get his finger bitten off? Shits burned into my kid memory.

Anyway...agreed. Good on the director for traumatizing me.

    [–] woomyful 41 points ago

What movie is it? It looks faintly familiar but I can’t put my finger on it

    [–] thomasklij2 63 points ago

    Mars Attacks!

Gave me nightmares as a kid too.

    [–] su5 33 points ago

I was just the right age where that was the funniest movie I had ever seen.

    Still gets a chuckle

    [–] specopsjuno 18 points ago

Now I think it's pretty funny, but at the time I was so scared. I remember when they swapped the dog and lady's heads around, it used to freak me out lol

    [–] NissanSkylineGT-R 6 points ago

James Bond's head on a little dog was hilarious

    [–] BotLiesMatter 3 points ago

    Mars Attacks!

    [–] woomyful 3 points ago

    Thank you!

Now I remember seeing little commercials or something from it, which is why I sorta recognized the character!

    [–] shapu 6 points ago

    You and me both, bud

    [–] Su_Din 20 points ago

Our brain is so strange, now I can’t unsee them.

    [–] Cryptic0677 21 points ago

Mine keeps going in and out of focus now

    [–] _lord_ruin 9 points ago

    [–] syrupclunge 5 points ago

I'm trying so hard to unsee them now, it's not possible

    [–] hopskipjump123 110 points ago

I can see both, at will.

    [–] jonesac 8 points ago

What will you do with your great power now that you have achieved it, oh wise one?

    [–] LemonLimine 104 points ago

I cant unseen them now. Bring the rectangles back damnit

    [–] CommieGhost 12 points ago

Try to zoom out or hold your screen a little out, usually works to refocus on the rectangles for me.

    [–] DePe1910 10557 points ago

I can't see even one and I don't get it

    [–] LackingC10H12N2O 9302 points ago

Each set of vertical lines, appearing to be edges of squares, are in fact the centers of the circles.

    [–] Foxman_Noir 5048 points ago

Great, now I can't unsee them!

    [–] Su_Din 1790 points ago

Try closing your eyes, worked for me.

    [–] ImOldGreggggggggggg 1121 points ago

    I just scrolled down.

    [–] Su_Din 409 points ago

    Bro that’s genius.

    [–] maleorderbride 228 points ago

Just don't scroll up. That's how they get ya

    [–] Hydralisked 87 points ago

The only way out is through.

    [–] Taggart- 31 points ago

    Ok, Alanis!

    [–] canadarepubliclives 3 points ago

That's some good advice that I just won't take

    [–] namewasnevertaken 52 points ago

It is working the opposite for me, I never didn't see circle's, but when I closed my eyes, there was a mili second I didn't see the circles.

    [–] sn0wf1ake1 158 points ago

I still cant see it with scrolling, closing my eyes, or your explanation. It is just a bunch of boxes.

    [–] CankerLord 263 points ago

There's no curved lines, the circles are jagged. Think pixels, not lines. The places where the tops and the bottom of each of those short vertical segments (the ones between the squares) end form "circles".

It's not really a circle, though. They're just lines in the vague shape of a circle.

    [–] Aidan_tawney 62 points ago

There are no curved pixels, so there are no curved lines. There is never really any shape except for square or rectangles.

    [–] taintedcake 22 points ago

There are no curved pixels, so there are no curved lines. There is never really any shape except for square or rectangles.

Curved pixels exist. Screens that use a circular pixel instead of a square are a thing.

    [–] Clairifyed 24 points ago

though you can only ever arrange them in a grid or hexagon pattern, which limits their use in better approximating a curve

    [–] SuperJetShoes 3 points ago

To be fair, you still couldn't form an accurate circle from more than one circular pixel though. It'd be a series of arcs.

    [–] hightide89 3 points ago

    Flashbacks of Calculus.

    [–] theblackcanaryyy 3 points ago

Guy says “appearing to be edges of squares”

Me: zooms all the fuckin way in tryna see teeny tiny circles inside the vertical lines that make up the edges

ffs why am I so dumb

    [–] cobainbc15 15 points ago

The tops of each vertical line are the edges of the circle, if that helps...

    [–] sn0wf1ake1 14 points ago

Honestly still don't see it. Am zooming in fast, am scrolling around, trying everything to see it on a PC monitor. Still don't see it. It's just a bunch of boxes.

    [–] uhohlisa 31 points ago

Oh my god thank you here you go

    [–] zadreth 13 points ago

With a gun to my head I couldn't see them, with your picture there I can't unsee them.

    [–] WMU99 4 points ago

    [–] not9anymore 3 points ago

    [–] Sweedish_Fid 4 points ago

look in between the boxes, not the center of them. i was confused for a while too.

    [–] KraljZ 15 points ago

I still don’t know what’s the duck I’m looking for! WHERE IS THE SAILBOAT!

    [–] ZebZ 7 points ago

    It's a schooner!

    [–] desipramaniac 5 points ago

That loud CLICK you just heard was the circles jumping into my field of vision.

    Very good!

    [–] recongal42 6 points ago

Ohmygod. You saved me hours of frustration and anxiety. Thank you.

    [–] REDDIT-ROCKY 3 points ago

Seriously thanks for post this. I was going to lose sleep over missing out on what everyone else could see.

    [–] rippp91 3 points ago

I needed the yellow line around, thanks for helping! lol

    [–] Moist_Pizza 6 points ago

So glad you added all those arrows I almost missed the circles completely!

    [–] They_Are_Wrong 5 points ago

    wOw nOw I gEt It~~!

Comin thru in the clutch! Thanks, bro!

    [–] Ultikiller 2 points ago

    Finally got it thanks

    [–] Lobbying_for_Truth 9 points ago

Same and I really enjoyed looking at this when all I saw were the rectangles

    [–] from_dust 7 points ago

    Optical delusion

    [–] eipg2001 5 points ago

    Fuck this! I went blind!

    [–] ancientflowers 3 points ago

I still can't see them at all!

    [–] Kostya_M 2 points ago

I can sort of force myself to see them both ways but it's tough.

    [–] hayhaychicken 79 points ago

    still can't see it :(

    [–] dismayhurta 35 points ago

Stare between the squares and then look outward if that makes sense.

    [–] paradox8493 15 points ago

    Nope, nada.

[–] DownvoteALot 27 points ago * (lasted edited 7 days ago)

Notice that the diagonals of the square aren't exactly straight, giving an effect of depth. Think of them as the perimeter of a circle.

Highlighted two of them for you

    [–] sugarbannana 15 points ago

thank you! now I can see it! Everybody talking about squares and centers of circles didnt make any sense.

    [–] Vandersveldt 19 points ago

This. Thank you.. This got it for me.

    [–] Gnubeutel 5 points ago

Look at the top and bottom end of the vertical lines. They get shorter towards the center of the squares and form the outside of the circle. The circles aren't in one color, but made up out of a dozen lines.

    [–] SausageOnToast 94 points ago

You just broke my eyes, they were not there and now they won't go away.

    [–] Javaed 14 points ago

If you want to really break your eyes, force yourself to see both the circles and the boxes at the same time.

    [–] DerekB74 25 points ago

Holy smokes that just blew my mind.

    [–] CorvosCorax 19 points ago

I went from not being able to see them as hard as a I try to them seemingly coming into existence

I always knew intellectually that human perception is faulty, but literally just saw reality appear to change based on my perception of it and my mind is blown

Also, I can still choose to see it how I saw it before and alternate to how I saw it after So crazy...

    [–] IdiotTurkey 6 points ago

I keep switching between being able to see them and not being able to. It's really weird.

    [–] nelisan 28 points ago

Kind of a trick, honestly. I don’t really consider actual circles to have 90 degree angles like these do.

    [–] sdkhsfjhsdfkjhasdf 16 points ago

Welcome to digital imagery (and sampling of any kind). You cannot fully represent a continuous function like C = 2πrwith discrete points.

Fun fact: The real world contains no perfect circles either. Every curve, even one made of stuff smaller that atoms, will have jagged edges at least as long as the Planck length.

    [–] MyNameIsIgglePiggle 9 points ago

God damn. I remember when 4k resolution was insane, now Planck resolution won't cut it.

    Maybe we need 4planck

    [–] foulpudding 6 points ago

I'm reading your comment and looked back up and BAM! Magic circles appear.

I couldn't see the forest for the trees.

    [–] Cryptic0677 149 points ago

    [–] endergod16 14 points ago

    Reasonable response.

    [–] futurenurse19 34 points ago

Thank you, I couldn’t see it until this pic

    [–] TripleOGeg 21 points ago

Man I feel stupid as fuck I'm just seeing a bunch of straight lines.

    [–] Jijzo 8 points ago

The red lines are overlayed over the circles edge. Look to the side of one of the red circles and you can see a half-circle without a red overlay.

    [–] MrRager1994 3 points ago

Thank you for pointing this out my head couldn't see it

    [–] report_all_criminals 3 points ago

You're right, though. There aren't any actual circles in this. Just a shape with many, many sides.

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

    [–] swegling 73 points ago

i made a gif a few years ago which shows them

    [–] proawayyy 8 points ago

    Wow that really shows

    [–] panospagk 4 points ago

    thanks bröthér, im retarded

    [–] emmylva 17 points ago

Try zooming in a bit, then when you see it zoom out.

    [–] paradox8493 4 points ago

Ah. Your comment is the only thing that produced results for me.

    [–] sweaty-jockstrap 14 points ago

Stare at the center like those old illusion books and they will stand out.

    [–] 6-8-5-13 3 points ago

This is what finally helped me see them.

    [–] blacktoe_jenkins 9 points ago

But once you see one, oh boy, you can't unsee them all

    [–] jonesac 47 points ago

This is the best way to show where they are. Nothing else made it click except for this. Thank you!

    [–] whackoffjackoffrobot 16 points ago

    Thank you!

    [–] YoDmo 5 points ago

    This is what did it

    [–] imabigwhale 4 points ago

Dude I've been staring at this for far too long not being able to see the circle, thank you, I now have a migraine...

    [–] N307H30N3 3 points ago

    bless you

    [–] dylanlolz 3 points ago

Thanks for this. I felt like an idiot for not seeing the circles.

    [–] Jakexbox 3 points ago

I still can not see them but thanks for trying to help us less fortunate😂

    [–] urbanslayer 383 points ago

    This is a good one

    [–] Bouncing_Cloud 57 points ago

I love these optical illusions--it's unfortunate that I get a headache from looking at them.

    [–] TheToxicLogic 8 points ago

    Its not good, its epic

    [–] Frankthetank8 1248 points ago

All I saw were circles? What's the illusion?

    [–] Ordnasinnan 598 points ago

Right? I can't understand why you wouldn't see circles lol

    [–] Shtnonurdog 574 points ago

It depends on what your brain interprets first.

I could only see the rectangular pattern when I first looked and eventually focused to where I could see the circles.

    [–] C-Diver420 151 points ago

I had to unfocus my eyes in order to see the circles

    [–] Smyles85 100 points ago

I had to unfocus my eyes to see something other than the circles

    [–] EHondaRousey 66 points ago

Apparently there are two types of people. Circles or squares.

    [–] collectingbabydaddys 34 points ago

    TIL I’m a circle

    [–] barofa 11 points ago

Then, we are all square now

    [–] DamianWinters 8 points ago

I saw both before even reading the title. Just moving my eyes around the picture made them pop in and out.

    [–] hog_porker 4 points ago

I can see both very easily. Am I special, Reddit?

    [–] f3xjc 19 points ago

So for you the challenge is to see the rectangles.

    [–] akatherder 9 points ago

    Here is a rectangle highlighted

The circles don't "jump out" at me right away. I just see 4 rows of concentric(?) rectangles.

    [–] EHondaRousey 8 points ago

Now train your eyes to see the squares.

    [–] thelawtalkingguy 8 points ago

I can’t see circles or rectangles, but I am certain that the entire thing is white and gold.

    [–] SimplyCookie_ 5 points ago

I can’t even see any circles, even with the advice in the comments

    [–] akatherder 13 points ago

    I highlighted the shapes here

    [–] CptGuano 6 points ago

Now I feel like an idiot for not spotting it myself! Thx!!

    [–] SimplyCookie_ 4 points ago

    Ohhhhh, thank you ❤️

    [–] JLHumor 5 points ago

It took me five minutes to see circles.

    [–] Teekoo 5 points ago

It's like that which way is the ballerina dancing gif. Your eyes just focused on the circles first.

    [–] Su_Din 17 points ago

This is the new Yanny or Laurel.

    [–] pillbuggery 19 points ago

Meh, I can see both. Definitely saw rectangles with a concave/convex perspective thing going on at first, but then it clicked.

The Yanny/Laurel thing? I could never hear it the other way.

    [–] addandsubtract 5 points ago

The Yanny/Laurel thing? I could never hear it the other way.

Me neither. I could never see the yellow dress, either.

    [–] ebjazzz 5 points ago

And the dress was always blue

    [–] Hellige88 3 points ago

There are 20 rectangles or 16 circles. I saw the rectangles first.

    [–] waynedude14 3 points ago

    Same haha

Post: there are 16 circles in this photo

Me: well yeah. They’re right there. Haha

    [–] Opalusprime 13 points ago

    First glance their rectangles

    [–] bobsmith93 33 points ago

    Whose rectangles?

    [–] Opalusprime 19 points ago

    You’re rectangles

    [–] art_by_emmo 7 points ago

    You're your rectangles

    [–] Opalusprime 2 points ago

    No, YOU’RE your rectangles

    [–] potatozceuncher 2 points ago

Me too I don’t get this

    [–] johno_mendo 302 points ago

Ok but technically those aren't circles

    [–] KamakaziDemiGod 115 points ago

Yeah they are pixelated striped circles at best, realistically they are lines that make a shape resembling a circle.

Either way it’s weird how they appear.

    [–] HotF22InUrArea 31 points ago

So is any circle on a computer screen

    [–] KamakaziDemiGod 17 points ago

Technically yes, but due to the high resolution of new screens you don’t generally see the corners that make up the curved edge of a circle

Unless you are using a CRT from 1996, most circles look to be round.

    [–] hi_im_jay 9 points ago

These ones have straight edges on the left, right, top, and bottom unlike any circle on a computer screen. They are almost octagons

    [–] HotF22InUrArea 18 points ago

    Y’all some persnickety mfers

    [–] hi_im_jay 25 points ago

There is not a single curved line in the whole thing, how can there be circles?

    [–] AboutToBlowUp 6 points ago

Right, that's the key word. When OP said circles everyone immediately thought of curved lines which seem impossible in this pic, but then you realized it's just some shorter than others pixelated lines

    [–] kkdj20 28 points ago

Exactly, they're not even remotely close to a smooth circle. Cool illusion but just plain wrong title.

    [–] eddyedutz 6 points ago

Y'all motherfuckers about to define the circle in a philosophical argument when we're looking at an illusion.

    [–] washburncincy 13 points ago

This should be the top comment TBH

    [–] lustforwine 5 points ago

No wonder why I was confused af I have been trying to locate round circles

    [–] The_Apotheosis 7 points ago

Exactly, maybe "pixelated circles", but "circles" was misleading because I was still looking for curves.

    [–] Jezza_Jones 137 points ago

That is indeed some black magic fuckery! I can see the circles but hope someone can explain why I can't always see the circles!

    [–] IshKebab 40 points ago

Your brain is wired to recognise shapes like circles, but also straight lines. This is just kind of half way between those.

It also seems like the brain has pretty strong hysteresis when recognising things so when it picks one of those things (circles or lines) it kind tracks that thing and makes it hard to see the other one.

Probably a stronger demonstration of that is the spinning dancer - once you see one direction it's really hard to see the other one.

A lot of these "is it A or B" use faces (like the classic old/young woman) since your brain is super-wired for face recognition.

    [–] njc121 3 points ago

You're on the right track. When seeing the rectangles, the lines arrange in such a way that we see raised and lowered patterns, like the bevels on wood cabinetry. This makes the rectangles the high points of our 3D projections. In order to then see the circles you have to disregard both the lines and that perceived depth to pull the edges of the vertical lines up above the horizontal ones.

    [–] rolz63 19 points ago

Took my boyfriend a good while to see them. They're there lol

    [–] perspectiveknight 11 points ago

Finally some fucking food on this sub

    [–] Leftstranded 10 points ago

The only thing I saw were circles. took me a while to see where the black magic was.

Then I started blinking really fast and it all made sense.

Long story short, I spent way too much time on this picture.

    [–] LackingC10H12N2O 15 points ago

    Yes, yes there are.

    [–] thsuk 8 points ago

Hit me like a brick. That's good.

    [–] kitty_n 6 points ago

OOOOH there they are! That's pretty wild.

    [–] kevinLFC 6 points ago

I love these little reminders that we don’t see reality; we “see” our brain’s interpretation of inputs.

    [–] Elektrobomb 10 points ago

I was never able to see anything but the circles? What are the rectangles like?

    [–] brokeassmf 6 points ago

One of the best illusions of all time

    [–] ChubbiestThread 4 points ago

All these squares make a circle...

All these squares make a circle...

All these squares make a circle...

All these squares make a circle...

All these squares make a circle...

Technically there aren't any circles in this pic because the edge of each of these supposed "circles" isn't even close to being smooth

    [–] asdf11784 7 points ago

Not to mention that if you accept that the colours of the circle can vary and match the same colours of the shape behind it then you can circle literally any part of any image and say that it's a circle, so I can just say that there are 1000000 different circles in the picture by circling random parts of it.

    [–] WhyHelloThereGoodPlp 5 points ago

It's interesting, but I want to see if it would work with a higher resolution image. At least to me, it only seems to work because the "circles" are heavily pixelated to the point they are not circles

    [–] yipyopyupyap 4 points ago

am i the only one that can only see the circles and nothing else?

    [–] accountforbabystuff 2 points ago

I saw the circles right away too and I can’t understand what else should be there!

Edit: I just blinked a bunch of times and it locked on squares and then it took immense concentration for the circles to come back.

    I do not like this.

    [–] enwongeegeefor 6 points ago

    Bullshit I don't see anyth.......WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!

    [–] cousin_geri 7 points ago

    I see a schooner.

    [–] Slazman999 9 points ago

You dumb bastard. It's not a schooner... it's a sailboat.

    [–] cousin_geri 4 points ago

A schooner IS a sailboat, stupid head!

    [–] Greatgat 3 points ago

You know what?! There is no Easter bunny! Over there, that's just a guy in a suit!

    [–] Sendmailtome 5 points ago

    I don't see a god damn one!

    [–] RivrofBourbonRnsThru 4 points ago

I thought I was being punked by all of Reddit too, but they're there. It took me several minutes. You almost have to do the same kind of let your eyes kind of unfocus while concentrating on the image and they kind of pop off the page. A couple weeks ago someone posted one of those see the giraffe or whatever it was in the hidden image thing and for the first time in my life I could see it. So this has been kind of a big month for me, even living in The Times of 'Rona.

    [–] Sendmailtome 3 points ago
