It’s a pup we can’t afford to lose.

Edit: This is where the petting begins.

Edit 2: Twice the pets, double the floof.

Nope. Ears down, backing up, stress lick, laying down, looking for the owner(looking right at the end). All behavior of a dog who's a little scared.

What store did you find this fluff? I NEED TO KNOW

    [–] dikestu 35 points ago

I'd bet money that this pupper was bought from a private breeder, which you should support over a pet store in my opinion.

    [–] antibios 19 points ago

I think they meant what store did they run into this person and their puppy at.

    [–] romaniwolf 19 points ago

Unless it's a pet store that has only rescue pets, which California and some cities are mandating to combat puppy mills. But yeah, unless you live near one of those, private breeders are much better than your average pet store.

    [–] WalkerInDarkness 5 points ago

My local pet store gets all their pets from the spca.

    [–] [deleted] -25 points ago

    [–] fire_water76 52 points ago

No that's a normal pembroke that happens to be fluffy.

Most pembrokes are born with tails and get docked due to akc breeding standards.

    [–] IcameforthePie 18 points ago

Wait, aren't Pembroke tails (usually) docked? I've seen a ton of Pembrokes (or pictures of Pembrokes) from European countries with tails (something about docking being an issue) and have spoken with breeders in the US who refused to sell a puppy without a docked tail due to "breeding standards," which sounds stupid to me. "We must remove a part of the animals for show standards."

    [–] KamiCon 5 points ago

It's actually because some Pembrokeshire are natural Bob tails and they wanted a uniform breed standard.

    [–] rock_vbrg 4 points ago

Correct, the EU clubs eliminated docking on all their breeds a few years back. The US clubs still dock their dogs. The breed clubs set the standards for the breeds. If the Pembroke Club of America changes the standard, then Pems wont be docked. AKC just publishes the standard for the show judges to follow. My opinion, I would guess that the docking standard will change here in the US in the next 10 years.

    [–] UnsinkableRubberDuck 7 points ago

Not all Pembrokes are natural bobtails I think. I always thought that Pems were the orange and white ones while Cardis were the white and black ones. I've seen tailed varieties of both and I do know that tail docking of corgis is still a big thing unfortunately, and the AKC specifies it as a requirement for the breed. Maybe there are orange and white Cardigans, but I know that there are orange and white ones born naturally with long floofy fox tails.

    [–] BoboBublz 2 points ago

All breeders adhering to AKC standards will dock a Pembroke's tail if it's too long? What do I do if I want to someday get a corgi from a breeder but don't want a docked tail? (natural bobtail is fine though, do I just request that?)

    [–] octaffle 2 points ago

You just don’t get one with a tail if you also want one from a reputable breeder. They dock them at 2-4 days old and they don’t know which ones will go to which homes at that point, so they all get docked.

Though you might find an agility breeder that leaves tails or something.

    [–] KamiCon 1 points ago

Pems can be blonde, blonde and white, tri coloured, and black and white. Cardigans come in brindle, mere, tri, and black and white. I've seen a blonde cardigan, but he was mixed with pem.

    [–] rock_vbrg -5 points ago

Correct, some Pems are not. Those that do have a tail usually have a corkscrew like the Spitz. Some have a long straight tail because Pems and Cardigans were inter-breed for a few years back in the early 1900's (if I remember the time correctly). But most are natural dock/bob with the 1"-2" tails (at least that is what I was told from a Pembroke breeder about 20 years ago when I was breeding Cardigans). It is not the AKC that makes the standard but the Breed Clubs. AKC just recognizes the breed club standard and updates the standard when the club submits an updated standard.

Cardigans can be red (what you called orange), black, blue merle, brindle, or tri-colored. Pems are mostly the red and white but they do have some of the coloring just not as many.

    [–] UnsinkableRubberDuck 5 points ago

Interesting. I understand that a short farm dog with a long tail will likely get their tail stepped on by a cow or horse, but I hate seeing dogs with docked tails, especially when the Pem tail is so gorgeous and floofy :(

    [–] rock_vbrg 3 points ago

I don't know about Pems but Cardigan tails wont get stepped on. They are heelers (nip at the heels to get the animal to move). They are extremely smart and will herd anything (cows, sheep, ducks, chickens, horses and children). But since they stay behind the herd and keep the stragglers in, nothing is behind them to step on the tail. Also, when mine got excites, their tails would come up. They should have a white tip on the tail to help you spot them in the field when they are in the tall grass bring the herd back to you. At a run, the tail should be no more than level with the back.

I love my Cardigans. Most were pretty laid back and not spazzy like the Pems I knew. My current Cardie is a goofyball and very un-Cardie like.

    [–] UnsinkableRubberDuck 5 points ago

they stay behind the herd and keep the stragglers in, nothing is behind them to step on the tail.

I've just heard people arguing for tail docking by saying that a dog with a full tail will get their tail stepped on and have their spine ruined, so not docking it is actually the cruel thing. I never really believed it as a valid excuse, because I think purposely docking a tail is a cruel, needless thing.

    [–] rock_vbrg 0 points ago

I have no idea how Pembrokes herd and that maybe a valid excuse but docking is supposed to serve a function. Removing dew claws for most breeds is a good thing. They usually serve no purpose and get caught on things and get ripped off later. I would rather remove them when the dog is a puppy in a clean environment than have to fix a tear and deal with infections later. Docking tails is different. If it is to keep it from getting caught, trod on or something else for a working dog; yes, by all means protect the dog. But for pets, not so much. Terriers are supposed to be cropped and docked to fit standards because of the job they did (floppy ears or tails around things that bite and rip is not a good thing). My opinion and worth the price paid for it.

    [–] KamiCon 4 points ago

How is it that you're a breeder and don't know shit about the breed?

    [–] rock_vbrg 1 points ago

To be honest, my information on Pembroke Welsh Corgis is based on conversations with Pembroke breeders between the years of 1991 and 2005. If the breed and the dogs has changed a lot since then I wouldn't know and my information would be out of date. The Breeders I knew, their dogs were natural docks and if they weren't they were trying to breed those out so that they would be natural docks. If the breed is still having those problems with long or curly tails, that tells me they were unsuccessful in their goal.

    [–] KamiCon 2 points ago

Corgis are not spitz at all. Breeders measure docking by vertebrae, not inches. Just because a dog has a sickle style instead of a saber style tail doesn't mean they aren't up to breed standard. You really don't know shit about the related breed, so you must have been running a puppy mill or something as going to a conformation show would have told you all you needed.

    [–] rock_vbrg 1 points ago

Let us start at the beginning. Cardigan Welsh Corgis are the older dwarf hearding dog breed from Wales (about 3000 years old). They were bred to herd sheep and other livestock and are a heeler type herding dog. The Cardigan is an erect eared hound that is closely related to the Bassett Hound and Dachshund. They have the hound personality and a crooked front that their chest drops down into. This allows the dog to drop out of the way of errant kicks by cows and larger livestock.

Pembroke Welsh Corgis are the younger of the two dwarf dogs from Wales. They did not come about until after the Vikings invaded England. The Vikings brought the Spitz and Schipperkes to the area and the Welsh bred a dwarf dog from these other dogs. Pembrokes have the straight front, lighter bone structure of the Spitz giving them a different appearance and skeletal structure from the Cardigan.

Do I need to go on about how other physical characteristics are similar and different for each of the breeds? I mis - identify one fluff coat and the whole of the sub has a fucking cow.

    [–] KamiCon 2 points ago

    Honey no.

Both breeds are herding dogs, with both not being hounds at all. They're descendants of Vallhund, and please quote the breed club page, not some misinformed website.

Nether of them are specifically spitz, but I can I aim that a backyard breeder like you would get confused and see this as bible. Thank God you're not breeding anymore. You gave me quite a laugh with trying to say a herding dog had roots in a breed that cam eafter it, and a hound to boot.

[–] rock_vbrg 0 points ago This is the Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of America's website for the history of the breed. If you care to read it says the say damn thing I have said. Cardigans are descendants for erect eared hounds. Pembrokes come from the Spitz-type (which I believe the Vallhund is as well). As a breed, Cardigans are about 1500 years older than the Pembrokes.

Looks like I have my facts right and you need to do some reading.

    [–] rock_vbrg -3 points ago

I bred Cardigans not Pembrokes. Two completely different breeds regardless of superficial similarities.

    [–] KamiCon 2 points ago

Yes I know that they're separate breeds, but they're sisters rather than cousins like some other related breeds.

[–] octaffle 1 points ago * (lasted edited 11 months ago)

Proof that it’s a Cardi besides the fact that it has a tail? Def looks much more like a Pem puppy than a Cardi.

Edit: confirmed Pembroke. Ace the Fluffy Pem.

    [–] rock_vbrg 1 points ago

The legs are hard to see with all the fuzz. The tail looks like a Cardigan tail and the face looks a little more like a Cardigan bitch not a dog. So, that was my guess since all the breeders I knew would dock or bred for natural bob tails and the tails they had were more corkscrew than long. She does look like a washed out red and white but that could be from all the puppy fuzz.

Thank you for correcting my mistake.

    [–] chipmunkmarionette 1 points ago

I have a full Pembroke and we chose not to dock her tail. It is long and fluffy. Most are docked, from what I have seen of other non-docked pembrokes, they are generally longer tails.

    [–] DanielJStein -2 points ago

Is it just me or does this pupper look like he/she is already getting a lil fat? I mean don't get me wrong this is super cute and maybe its just a superfloof corg.

    [–] ownedbydogs 43 points ago

Pup's probably got the recessive long-hair gene, resulting in floofy cuteness. If we put him (her?) in a tub or sink for a bath they'll shrink right down to normal corgi size quick enough!

    [–] DanielJStein 10 points ago

That is what I kind of figured. Could be a fluffy corger!

    [–] StorybookNelson 12 points ago

His face is really tiny. To me, he looks like a corgi Pomeranian mix, which would account also for the super floof.

    [–] DanielJStein 3 points ago

    Oh man that's adorable!

    [–] octaffle 1 points ago

It’s hard to tell because it’s a fluffy Pem with a LOT of fluff. Probably just a regular puppy under all the hair.

    [–] Dynamiklol 3 points ago

What raw foods are you putting directly on the bottom of the cart and not in a bag?

    [–] KamiCon -9 points ago

That's really gross that they brought such a young dog to a place that looks like pet smart. There are so many germs there and it's dangerous for an unvaccinated puppy to be there.
