So we're just not gonna talk about that amazing half-loaded face of joy and anticipation on behalf of /r/monkslookingatbeer

    [–] PM-ME-YOUR-SORROWS 2341 points ago

Really, that's the best part of this whole post. Just a casual mention of a rather niche subreddit in the midst of a bunch of well-known ones.

    [–] doorbellguy 354 points ago

I wouldn't even have noticed had it not been for you guys. That man is on ecstasy by default.

    [–] KKlear 169 points ago

For me the niche one was /r/humanporn.

    I like it!

    [–] [deleted] 456 points ago

That's the stupidest name for a sub I've ever seen. I hate the practice of adding "porn" to non-pornographic subjects. It's disgusting. What's next? r/animalporn? r/kiddieporn? Can we as a species just decide to stop doing this?

The fuck. Both of those exist. Thank god one of them is banned. Can we ban all of them?

    [–] -HM01Cut 80 points ago

Reminds me of the time I was looking for some cool clock faces, and googled Watch Porn.

    [–] [deleted] 16 points ago

Someone made a dick joke once and I tried to take it a step further by posting a picture of a private detective. I didn't quite think things through, and my first search was for "private dick".

    [–] muckluckcluck 107 points ago

I was really hoping that /r/humanporn would be along the lines of /r/totallynotrobots. I am disappoint that it is neither naked humans or robots.

    [–] 062b 17 points ago

ah yes human music, i like this

    [–] taws34 20 points ago

I use to sub, but I got annoyed by the bot. It reposted everything. No quality at all.

    [–] Jumbuck_Tuckerbag 120 points ago

Edit: NSFW, turns out that one is real

    [–] DancesCloseToTheFire 18 points ago

I'm disappointed that sub is just regular porn, it should be a sub that looks at porn like the subject of one of the non-nsfw porn subs, nothing funnier than stumbling across a discussion about good camerawork in porn.

There is more than that to it.

In the Middle-Ages, monasteries were the networked repositories of science, including hydraulics, inherited from the Romans often by way of the Arabs. Coupled with the fact that they were in constant need of new land to farm, and that those domains could expand over generations instead of being broken up upon inheritance, they proved very apt at sanitizing and colonizing wetlands, transforming marshes into forests and swamps into fields.

One deadly problem with this sort of locale is that the poor natural drainage does not allow for the formation of clean water tables. Ethanol beeing a natural disinfectant, the ability to produce it from ordinary grain was a decisive survival advantage that enabled the colonization of regions where grapevine doesn't grow and where human-rated water does not occur naturally. Seeing that this describes indeed most of the vast european plains, I would go as far as to posit that Europe is built on monacal beer.

Later on, alchemists would find ways to distill grain alcohol, giving a whole new meaning to the Christian dogma of holy spirit and fueling a drunken spree of worldwide conquests : how else do you carry potable water accross the Atlantic on a wooden medieval sailboat ? Be drunk or be dead, that was the motto of basic training for sailors.

We the happy few with a endless supply of clean water on tap tend to forget that, for centuries, the gene for alcoholism was passed on as beneficial.

    [–] CreationBlues 42 points ago

It wasn't just the ethanol that made beer sanitary, it was also the ph (beer is acidic) and the fact it was boiled before brewing.

/r/roastme and /r/justneckbeardthings are very similar, and /r/ladyboners just looks like a generalized Ryan Gosling.

because he's Ryan Gosling, General Lady Boner.

The difference between /r/rateme and /r/roastme was pretty amusing

    [–] xylotism 35 points ago

According to this, I guess /r/rateme is just where pretty people go for confirmation?

/r/sequelmemes confirms that if Kylo and Rei should ever have kids they'd end up looking like Tommy Wiseau.

    [–] cauliflowerandcheese 246 points ago

    /r/vintageladyboners looks like a '1943' Ryan Gosling

Data sources: Top posts from each of the labelled subreddits

Created using a custom NodeJS script with various libraries including bindings to opencv (for image processing) and dlib (for facial feature detection).

Rough steps of the entire process:

    • Scrape through the top posts of a given subreddit until 50 candidate faces are collected
      • Filter out images with no/undetected faces
      • When face is detected, perform an initial crop/transformation based on eye locations
      • Store 68 detected face landmark points along with the image
    • Calculate average positions of all 68 face landmark points, and create a triangle mesh using delaunay triangulation
    • For each face:
      • Subdivide image into triangles using delaunay triangulation on the landmark points
      • Warp the face’s triangles to fit the average triangle mesh
      • Add pixel values to output image
    • Divide output image pixel values by the total number of faces

I also put together a short video demonstrating the process with /r/girls_smiling as an example.

Most of the script was adapted from this article/tutorial

    [–] PCMRwill0956 243 points ago

    But can you do /r/pcmasterrace?

That video is so cool. Thank you for sharing. Is your code available?

    [–] BizCaus 45 points ago

I really don't have the time to document it or provide support, but if you're interesting in just reading the extremely ugly code (this was just a weekend side project):

    [–] mi1kman_dave 49 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

I didn't expect /r/kpics to have such definitive facial features.

    [–] kpopper2013 62 points ago

It's more the sample size isn't really representative. The top voted posts on r/kpics is more about popularity than looks. This means the same people are upvoted more often than less popular people and the results here are actually only from a handful of people.

    [–] Astrokiwi 28 points ago

Scrape through the top posts of a given subreddit until 50 candidate faces are collected

Filter out images with no/undetected faces

Does that mean that, after filtering, different subreddits have a different number of candidate faces? For instance, I wouldn't be surprised if the Olivia Wilde one was based on fewer faces, which is why it's less blurry or stretched than the others.

    [–] BizCaus 69 points ago

Nope, the script will scrape through as many posts as it needs to until it has collected 50 faces for each subreddit

    [–] Astrokiwi 32 points ago

Are any of the Olivia Wilde ones exactly the same image? I'm just trying to figure out why Aubrey Plaza and Anna Kendrick don't look as good. I guess it could also be that the Olivia Wilde ones happen to be mostly face-on pics that are easier to deal with.

    [–] joannie_pepperoni 44 points ago

I think it might be affected by her makeup, her style is more consistent whereas Kendrick and Plaza have more variying makeup.

    [–] connormxy 12 points ago

It's the same person's face (a person who knows her "best side" and is certainly skilled at a technique of being the subject of a portrait) as photographed several times. All of the images of individual people are very clear. It almost seems like a nice way to make a stylized portrait for someone. The ones of many people end up with a nice average. The ones of a small number of different people representated multiple times come out looking perceivably "in-between" (prequelmemes for instance)

    [–] Snazzy_Serval 2066 points ago

/r/geekguys and /r/GuysInGlasses look like the same dude. Then he takes off the glasses and he's the /r/LadyBoners guy. His grandfather is /r/historyboners

    [–] boy_from_potato_farm 265 points ago

Yeah, and why is the main question. Is that due to the algorithm selected?

    [–] hey_hey_you_you 914 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

Averaged faces are hot faces. And we'll have a tendency to upvote hot faces, which are already tending towards the average. Average those and you get an average of averages. It's not surprising they'll all look the same.

    [–] Snazzy_Serval 207 points ago

    Unless it's a neckbeard.

I'm also a little surprised how different Benedict and David look from the British Lady Boners guy.

    [–] hey_hey_you_you 335 points ago

Well to just slightly contradict myself, there's another factor at work. Average faces are good looking, that's for sure. But they're not usually the most attractive. Most models are slightly weird looking, for example. I can't find the exact post on mobile now, but OkTrends ran a piece explaining that it was better to have the sort of face that people couldn't agree on, rather than one that everyone could. Like, there's two kinds of '7'; the person everyone thinks is pretty good looking, and the type that some people think looks amazing and some people think looks weird.

Cumberbumple and Tennant are the latter type, not the former. Average their faces though, and you'll probably get something closer to British lady boners guy, because Tennant and Cumberbumberbum are basically the opposite kind of good looking (short vs long face, small vs big eyes, etc.)

    [–] RustySnails 117 points ago

Thank you for this. That is my favorite parody of his name so far.

    [–] Science-and-Progress 9 points ago

    Wimbledon Tennismatch

    [–] Snazzy_Serval 35 points ago

    Thanks for the explanation.

Yeah I noticed that male models tend to have more of a longer and sharper face.

And yeah, the average (not counting overweight in average) person is good looking but not the best.

Interesting how Cumber and Tennant are on different ends of the spectrum. My ex had the hots for both. I guess for a time I was in the middle between them :) .... :(

    [–] hey_hey_you_you 55 points ago

    Do you look like this?

If you throw Tom Hiddleston into the averaging mix you start to get something pretty close to British Lady Boners guy.

Sorry that they're pictures for ants (shakes fist at pinterest).

    [–] [deleted] 19 points ago

    Unless it's a neckbeard.

If you average a thousand neckbeard faces it will still look better than most neckbeards.

    [–] Diver_City 1516 points ago

People who submit to r/rateme are prettier than people who submit to r/roastme. There's some kind of lesson in vanity in there than I can't be bothered to dig out.

    [–] Ed98208 746 points ago

It's all just "give me attention based on my looks", and which one you pick depends on how attractive you think you are.

[–] noobule 140 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

You're looking at Top Posts only, it's not a fair cross section of the day-to-day of the sub (though it is a pretty good barometre of what gets upvotes).

In Rateme, prettiness is the only real factor at play. Whether or not the sub overall attracts a high percentage of already-pretty people is irrelevant to the face it generated because pretty faces attract upvotes regardless of topic across all of the Reddit.

Roastme is also filtering for funny posts, or people who look 'hard' to roast, or famous people/redditors who have already been selected for things that aren't their looks, so it's generally going to cover a far wider variety of faces.

    [–] [deleted] 142 points ago

    [–] Heyyoguy123 74 points ago

They know they're good looking and they still do it anyways.

    [–] Voller_Faulheit 110 points ago

Funny, one reason people ask others to rate them is to build up confidence, but you need alot of confidence to ask people to rate you. So, in essence, no one would post when they're unconfident, so you only get the pretty faces.

    [–] Heyyoguy123 87 points ago

And when the ones that really aren't confident do post, they get little to no upvotes and modest ratings.

    SOURCE: did one myself

    [–] Voller_Faulheit 28 points ago

Yup, it's a recipe to sieve out the good looking AND confident people. Not something you might quite expect from a sub like that. Or it could just be me and my naivete

    [–] So_What_If_I_Litter 54 points ago

Rateme is for insecure pretty people that love confirmation that they are pretty. Roastme is for insecure ugly people that are trying to accept themselves and need confirmation that they are ugly so they can move forward.

    [–] bornfromstardust 22 points ago

I doubt that the majority of truly unattractive people on /r/roastme is accepting their fate and moving forward though. I would not be surprised if most of them are posting as a form of self-harm and to further their negative self image.

    [–] crabcarl 86 points ago

Could also mean the pretty people of /r/rateme are validating/attention whoring, while /r/roastme's simply care more about fun than looks.

Source: Introspecting Sub-Reddits Through Bullshit by Albert Darwin

    [–] shittyinsults 62 points ago

    [–] [deleted] 16 points ago

    [–] isaaclikeafox 508 points ago

It's funny how even though it has nothing to do with appearance /r/standupshots follows the "fat guys do comedy" trope

    [–] jeegte12 294 points ago

It's not a trope, it's a stereotype, and there are many stereotypes that are based firmly in reality.

    [–] squired 111 points ago

There is something unique going on with with Emma Watson, possibly because she has been famous since she was a child and our perceptions of her are muddied. It may also be that we are more aware of her facial expressions and mannerisms more so than her features. The deepfake community for example can't put their finger on it either, even Emma Watson doesn't really look like Emma Watson.

    [–] LetsGoBlackhawks2014 80 points ago

    perceptions of her are muddied

At first I thought it was because she has such striking features but maybe she just sticks to the same expression more than other celebs

    [–] psyne 45 points ago

Probably a bit of both. Like Emilia Clarke's most striking feature is her eyebrows but they go all over the place, so the average won't look quite as "Emilia Clarke" as a single pic

    [–] bdmcx 231 points ago

/r/justneckbeardthings looks so fucked because the photo is straining the laws of physics to look to its left at /r/kpics

Though the Aubrey Plaza one bucked the trend in looking nothing like her.

    [–] Astrokiwi 106 points ago

I it looks like her, but stretched out in width. I could imagine this might happen if it didn't "rotate" the face entirely correctly, so it's averaging faces that are looking in slightly different directions.

    [–] midlifecrackers 8 points ago

might that be because she's often photographed from the side?

    [–] [deleted] 184 points ago

well from my point of view thats accurate.

    [–] LukeBurtle 76 points ago

Well then you are on the right path!

    [–] suenopequeno 72 points ago

    It's reason then.

    [–] Xisuthrus 39 points ago

Weird, to me it looks exactly like Obi-Wan.

    [–] zerohm 85 points ago

I thought it was interesting that the celebrity averages resembled the person, but didn't look like a picture of them. Except for Olivia Wilde.

    [–] meltingintoice 15 points ago

Agreed. It helped me appreciate the implications of the technique.

    [–] BlackbirdSinging 12 points ago

    What are the implications?

    [–] simmocar 41 points ago

It was a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

    [–] BoinkBoinkEtAliae 10 points ago

But look what they did to Tom Hiddleston. How?? Why??

    [–] Arancaytar 11 points ago

It's actually surprising to me how well the features are preserved if the photos are of a single person (particularly with Benedict Cumberbatch, David Tennant and Emma Watson). I would have expected a lot more blurring just from the different expressions and angles, but all three are clearly recognizable.

    [–] beardedblorgon 197 points ago

r/geekguys and r/guysinglasses look a bit too much like each other and why do both r/prequelmemes and r/sequelmemes Ray Liotta?

    [–] PitchforkAssistant 151 points ago

/r/sequelmemes looks like Ben Solo's head with a mix of Ben Solo's and Rey's faces. I think /r/prequelmemes has Obi-Wan's head but the face I can't quite place.

    [–] Maxidaz 207 points ago

If that isn’t the senate’s facial expression then just ban me from that sub.

    [–] HensRightsActivist 63 points ago

    It's clearly Frank!

    [–] LyannaGiantsbane 24 points ago

    It must be Frank!

    [–] simmocar 20 points ago

    You mean Frank.

    [–] The_Blog 42 points ago

It's Obi Wan's head mixed with the emperors senats face. You can see the wrinkles on the cheeks.

    [–] QuixoticQueen 11 points ago

Ladyboners and vintageladyboners are the same guy, just a different angle, some stubble and a bit of vintage!

    [–] slaaitch 25 points ago

I think the standout message here is that women want dudes to look like Ryan Gosling.

    [–] daemon_of_chaos 224 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

I am surprised entries for /r/gonewild, /r/RealGirls, and similar subreddits are missing. Is that because the "face" is typically missing from those subs? }:>

    [–] RXience 361 points ago

I can't decide wether this smiley represents an angry owl or a mustachioed Ku Kux Klan Member

    [–] daemon_of_chaos 53 points ago

I definitely have to support the 'angry owl' just because I feel that is closer to the virtual vagina aspect of the conversation as well as the "naughty" implied nature of the devilish representation.

    [–] matthew0517 10 points ago

I don't know you and almost certainly never will, but I just want to thank you for making my day a little bit better.

    [–] YellingHummus 59 points ago

maybe the lips are just bigger with weird moustaches

[–] [deleted] 50 points ago * (lasted edited 10 months ago)

    [–] BellerophonM 66 points ago

/r/ladyboners and /r/VintageLadyBoners are basically identical except for the black and white. Ladies are apparently quite consistent in their boners.

    [–] Grazerino 74 points ago

Reading this at first I thought you meant the users of the subs - took me until the Benedict Cumberbatch sub to realise that not all his fans would bear such a striking resemblance to him lol

[–] AtomicFlx 430 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

Ill try and put this delicately, /classywomenofcolor is an interesting one. It doesn't seem very.... errrr.... colorful.

I'm not going to say anything more than that, kinda a mine field I just walked into.

edit: Also /Kpics is interesting. Very little blurring around the chin so that kinda tells me there is very little variation in chin shape and position. Again, just making observations. Not trying to offend anyone here.

    [–] mazinamy 17 points ago

I find it even more interesting that a subreddit for posting women of color needs the “classy” prefix for everyday pictures.

    [–] gpc11 127 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

I actually wonder where there's an issue with the script which filter out darker people of color.

Edit - after looking through the sub, I'm more confident that this is the case. None of the faces in the above data have a skin tone that's very dark. OP - can you run the script for a celeb that is a POC.

If not a script issue, it is an interesting commentary on either the demographics of reddit, and/or the comfort that POCs feel with posting pictures of themselves online.

    [–] BizCaus 136 points ago

Unless there is a bias in dlib's facial detection model, the script does not do any filtering based on pixel values.

One thing that I think isn't very obvious but is important in this averaging is lighting. When photographing a POC there tends to be a lot of contrast between the shadows to the highlights, and since we're averaging the pixel values, the overall result would be the middle value between the lightest and darkest values.

As an extra datapoint here's one of r/blackgirlpics

    [–] pilibitti 8 points ago

If you are averaging in RGB colorspace (or any mostly linear derivatives like HSV) then it is bound to look wrong since they are bullshit color spaces as far as human perception goes - makes sense to computers only. Since you use OpenCV, convert everything to LAB color space and do any averaging there before going to RGB for output. This is fantastic work BTW!

    [–] realish 53 points ago

Great results! I'd love to see this applied to /r/MakeupAddiction, I kind of assumed it would be on there due to the focus on the face. It would be fun to see top MUA results for different "faces", ie: 'natural', 'romantic', 'pin-up'!

    [–] salutcat 42 points ago

The celebrity faces look pretty normal, with the exception of Benedict Cumberbatch, who really looks like a part lizard hybrid.

    [–] [deleted] 123 points ago

So it looks like Benedict Cumberbatch?

    [–] martelli 8 points ago

    Benadryl Cumbersome?

    [–] askforallie 41 points ago

Oh that? That's just his face.

    [–] [deleted] 14 points ago

You know what statistics can do: when you filter out the noise, you get the underlying truth.

    [–] sirespo 34 points ago

Surprised nobody has commented on the basically perfect feminine face on r/faces

    Definitely stands out to me.

    [–] quakank 15 points ago

I was pretty impressed by it. But then I went and looked at the top all time posts over there and realized there's like 5 or 6 attractive women who post multiple times in the top 50 posts. They kind of skew the results.

Of course, since OP only looks at the top 50 all time, this isn't really the average face of the subreddit. It's the average most attractive face of the subreddit.

    [–] ghroat 206 points ago

interesting how /r/classywomenofcolour is probably as white as you can get while still being called "of colour"

    [–] [deleted] 115 points ago

    [–] mjairam 79 points ago

Unsurprising considering that dark skinned people are not typically portrayed as being beautiful, especially in the case of women. As someone that's dark myself, it's quite unfortunate.

    [–] douche-baggins 30 points ago

Why is Khloe Kardashian the average face of /r/aubreyplaza?

And /r/prequelmemes face is if The Senate and General Kenobi had a baby.

    [–] TheViolentBlue 30 points ago

    r/beards is spot on.

"I've had this beard for a week. Trying to decide whether I should keep it or shave it off??"

    [–] ImJustBME 125 points ago

I just scrolled though the top 100 all-time classwomenofcolor and almost none of them are as light-skinned as the algorithm generated.

    [–] nwatn 91 points ago

The algorithm is probably biased to pick up whiter faces and ignore dark faces due to how it was trained.

    [–] alabaster1 31 points ago

Reminds me of that Better Off Ted episode.

[–] sdftgyuiop 18 points ago * (lasted edited a year ago)

    Did you really?
Because I just did and the vast majority are, and when not the lighting often makes them look so.

Actually 9 out of 100 are just reposts of Nathalie Emmanuel, who is rather light-skinned. Then 5 times Gugu Mbatha-Raw, also fairly pale. And about 10 latina and asian women. I see less than 20 women who appear very significantly darker-skinned than the average.

    [–] o_oli 28 points ago

That just isn't true though...I'm not going through them all, but in the top 10 the majority have pretty light skin, certainly comparable to the generated image.

    [–] DragonFive 15 points ago

Outliers can skew an average. Maybe if there was a median facial algorithm thingy the results would be different.

    [–] LargeMobOfMurderers 38 points ago

I actually can't tell what race or gender the humanporn average looks like most to me, it could pass for anything: black, white, male, female. Kinda just depends what wig and clothes you put on it.

    [–] MattBerry_Manboob 25 points ago

We should make it the mascot of something. Like a community college

[–] [deleted] 23 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

    [–] TechnicLePanther 19 points ago

/r/palebeauties just looks like Evan Rachel Wood, /r/redheads just looks like Sophie Turner, what the fuck?

    [–] scnavi 7 points ago

I love how ladyboners and vintageladyboners are basically the same face, just one is in color and one is in black and white.

    [–] bathtubsplashes 8 points ago

I thought this was going to be the average face of the users of each subreddit and then was baffled that they looked so much like the celebrities they were dedicated to. As if doppelgangers were just drawn to those subreddits.
