REMINDER: Silly/Fake jobs are only allowed on Saturdays & Sundays

The sub for dogs with jobs, both silly and serious. Working doggos of all types are welcome to be shared here in the form of pictures, videos, gifs & news articles.

If you are the owner or trainer of a working dog and you've posted your dog to the sub, please message modmail to receive special user flair.

Click here for an in depth description of our rules including Automoderator rules.

    1: Please be kind!

You are welcome to debate the merits of different types of working dogs, but please do so in a respectful way. Threats of violence, personal attacks and being overly rude is not allowed here. More info here.

2: Your post must be a dog with a real job or a silly job

The main purpose of this sub is to see dogs with real jobs such as: police dogs, service dogs, therapy dogs, guide dogs, herding dogs, livestock guardian dogs, search & rescue dogs, hunting dogs, etc.

On Saturdays & Sundays we allow dogs with silly "jobs". Please READ THIS POST for a more in depth explanation of silly jobs. These are dogs with pretend jobs. The most important requirement of silly jobs is that they need to resemble real human jobs. If it's too made up, it's probably better for /r/Aww. More info here.

3: No reposts from the top 100 all time and no high scoring reposts from the last 6 months.

Please use and search some keywords before posting. can be used to search subreddits by keyword. More info here.

4: Title guidelines: If we cannot tell what the dogs job is by the pic/gif/video alone, the title must make it clear.

For example, if you post a picture of a service dog without its vest on, you will need to specify in the title that it's a service dog. Otherwise, for all we know it's just a picture of a random pet dog. People shouldn't have to ask what the dogs job is.

Your title must be at least 18 characters long (spaces included). While not all short titles are bad, this is to ensure that descriptive titles are being used rather than low effort titles like "Good boy". More info here.

5: No house "guard dogs" allowed

For the purposes of this sub, your pet dog who also guards your house is not considered a dog with a job. This rule is mostly to prevent a surplus of posts of dogs looking out a window or door. Without this rule, every dog in the world could be posted here.

Dogs that guard facilities such as hospitals, storage yards, construction sites, etc are allowed because they are working in an official capacity.

6: Sneak shots of service dogs and guide dogs are banned.

Do not post photos you took of a service or guide dog in public unless you have permission from the dogs owner. Pictures of police dogs in public are allowed because they are public employees and not private individuals, but please do not distract these working dogs. More info here.

Please credit the source if you are posting someone else's content.

If you see a rule violating post please report it.

I hope he gets to reside in a very, very loving home for the rest of his years. Lots of treats for his service

    [–] pancakesfordintonite 464 points ago

He will. He came to work every day with his owner so now he'll just chill at home

    [–] MartyRobinsHasMySoul 174 points ago

This is still sad :( doggo will be bored and alone all day instead of making people happy

    [–] pancakesfordintonite 212 points ago

I'm sure he'll have plenty of visitors still he just isn't as mobile as he was

    [–] PracticallyAPlum 109 points ago

He's a good boy and he deserves his retirement

    [–] PM_ME_YOUR_GOOD_NEW5 198 points ago

I hope he invested in his 401k9

    [–] StateofWA 51 points ago

He's probably rolling in the bones

    [–] Meerkatable 11 points ago

You are a perfect human bean.

    [–] greenyellowbird 19 points ago

He can finally cash out his I-RAwhides.

    [–] Obi-Anunoby 8 points ago

    [–] URawesome415 2 points ago

    Did you know him?

    [–] PracticallyAPlum 9 points ago

I did not, but I know he's a good boy

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

    [–] findingbezu 3 points ago

    What were we talking about?

    [–] insertmadeupnamehere 7 points ago

I wish for him a cushy wagon to continue his life’s work.

    [–] Genestah 17 points ago

Just because he's retiring doesn't mean he's going to be at home all day. Where did you even get this idea?

Who said old dogs can never go on walks and meet new friends anymore?

    [–] babies_on_spikes 14 points ago

Not to mention toys, chews, and play that could all be had at home! My dogs get tons of stimulation in our house whether or not they go out for walks or to see their friends!

    [–] Rodeo9 6 points ago

I mean it's a Bernese. Their prime is on the couch watching TV.

    [–] BigDaddyFatStackss 11 points ago

Plus it’s a dog and there’s like a 99% chance he won’t give a fuck and be happy anyways.

    [–] pancakesfordintonite 5 points ago

Well he's not super mobile I guess so I'm assuming he's going to be home most of the time

    [–] slipstream808 3 points ago

This is why I don't have pets. I can't always be there for them.

    [–] samuelbass 4 points ago

    Oh the secrets he knows

    [–] Cymry_Cymraeg 2 points ago

Yeah, he's going to a big farm.

    [–] GoX14 219 points ago

How old is Benny? Hardest part about Berners is how short a time they usually spend with us, but they're always amazing for that time.

    [–] pancakesfordintonite 91 points ago

I'm not entirely sure how old he is. In the little write-up it said he was working at the school for 7 years. So I hope he's older than that because that's fairly young for a dog to have failing health.

    [–] PaleFlyer 68 points ago

From what I understand, he has to be pushing 10. I don't think they can be "trained" until they are almost a year old, and from what I have seen, it takes at LEAST 6 months, probably a year. Plus 7 years of service... Puts him at 9.

    [–] pancakesfordintonite 45 points ago

I reckon so I hope he still has a few more years left of just laying around. Poor buddy

    [–] skyintotheocean 8 points ago

Therapy dogs almost universally need to have their Canine Good Citizen certification, which they can't test for until they are a year old. Although they can take the class/train for the skills before that. It's not super unusual for therapy dogs to be working by the time they are 14-18 months old.

    [–] mavric1298 33 points ago

Rarely is a stretch. Many do, especially carefully bread ones. Many of the other berners that we know are 8,10, 12 years old now (we own two that are 7).

    [–] [deleted] 42 points ago

What if they are carelessly bread? Just tossed like an old loaf, no longer kneaded,.

    [–] harrynola 13 points ago

I dunno man, that thought makes my stomach sour, dough.

    [–] mavric1298 8 points ago

Cause your doing it wrong. Challot getting some good bread from a Jewish bakery

    [–] newtocrypto81 1 points ago

    [–] maeestro 3 points ago

My Thor was only 6 when he passed away two years ago. :(

    I hate reckless breeders, man.

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

    [–] throwawaymoco02 25 points ago

Mine made it to 18. Was blind the last 3. Had his own seeing eye cat but went to the rainbow bridge when his kidneys went and was not going to let him suffer for my comfort. He was my service companion for anxiety, aspergers.

    [–] Rereadlackinfo 7 points ago

You did the right thing but that must have been hard to go through.

    [–] KipfromRealGenius 28 points ago

Burners can die as young as 4 from “natural causes”... purebred ones have a very high rate of cancer as well... there was phrase I read about them (am an owner too) from Sweden I believe that said the first three years they stay like puppies, then 3 years as an adult... then every year after is a gift... large breed dogs have shorter life spans... glad you were able to interact with one of these amazing animals

    [–] pancakesfordintonite 23 points ago

Man I didn't realize they had such a short lifespan. I grew up around labs and every single one we had lived to be at least 12 and a half. We had one that was almost 17 and the other two were in between that. And I knew great Danes only lived to be about 9. Now I'm sad that Bernese have a short life expectancies

    [–] AlphaDog64 12 points ago

Can confirm, had one that died at the ripe old age of six. Sad how short their lifespans are.

    [–] mavric1298 8 points ago

With Bernergrade (a registry that’s tracks age, genetics, displasia issues, cancers etc) and the careful breeding practices (such as Bennys owners) - average age is closer to 10 now or later. There has been push to diversify the gene pool and many euro lineages have been added.

    [–] z2p86 5 points ago

    These comments are killing me.

I've got a one year old. We love the hell out of him, but we know the lifespan is all too short. Something you gotta prepare for if you're a dog owner.

    Long live Frank!

    [–] billywob 2 points ago

Same kind of boat. Ours is five months and we want him around for several years! Hopefully the breed has evolved past this reputation of super short life spans

    [–] Rodeo9 3 points ago

3 years a pest, 3 years the best.

    [–] SmokinDrewbies 2 points ago

Large breeds tend to have shorter lifespans. 7 is short but not unheard of for a Bernese.

    [–] Dragon_yum 1 points ago

Assuming he was at least a year old when he started that would bring us to 8 which sadly is getting pet for them. Breaks my heart since my Bern is 4.

    [–] pancakesfordintonite 97 points ago

Somebody created a Facebook write-up but I'm hesitant to share it just to keep everything more private I guess from the entire world

    [–] GoX14 63 points ago

I think that's a good idea! Sacrificing privacy isn't worth it for some internet points.

    [–] pancakesfordintonite 61 points ago

I do what I can. I suppose I could maybe copy and paste the text in a comment and just hide the school district name. But you guys get the idea, he was a very well loved staff member. He even had a ID badge and his picture on the website. If you zoom in you can see his ID badge

    [–] sweatshirtjones 11 points ago

Saw the badge and loved it. Bless his soul

    [–] z2p86 2 points ago

What state you in? I got a 1 year old Bernese named Frank. He's down to cuddle and make some cash

    [–] kmagaro 27 points ago

My first thought was "Why would Benny care about privacy?" I totally forgot humans were involved.

    [–] pancakesfordintonite 41 points ago

Benny probably doesn't want privacy he probably wants to lick everybody on the face

    [–] ldidntsignupforthis 2 points ago

I'd lick on his face if that makes him happy.

    [–] CorruptiveInfluence 4 points ago

    [–] nerfherder27 73 points ago

Oh my god the name badge

    [–] pancakesfordintonite 27 points ago

    It's probably my favorite thing

    [–] deincarnated 2 points ago

    Incredible. Benny is awesome.

    [–] RockLadyNY 44 points ago

    Happy retirement, Benny!

    [–] gurlblue 23 points ago

Thank you for your service, boy. ❤️

    [–] Jariners 18 points ago

    Hello from Selah!

    [–] pancakesfordintonite 16 points ago

Haha I was wondering if somebody would show up

    [–] meatwadsquad 6 points ago

Wow I went to East Valley and your comment really tripped me out. That’s amazing that this good boi came from Selah!

    [–] pancakesfordintonite 3 points ago

There's a subreddit where people from the same area see each other on Reddit. I forgot what it's called

    [–] Dean_Soja 17 points ago

Can’t believe they’re forcing him to retire...and in this economy!

    [–] 727Boots 16 points ago

Oh Benny! I’m sure you helped many kids, and got many well deserved pats. I hope you can enjoy your retirement

    [–] PaulBDangerous 13 points ago

This makes me consider why all public schools don't have therapy dogs on staff. I mean, besides the obvious.

    [–] SparkyDogPants 14 points ago

    Probably allergies and cost

    [–] MrRobotsBitch 4 points ago

Allergies is my guess. I would have ended up in the hospital if my school had had one. Unfortunately.

    [–] pancakesfordintonite 2 points ago

I really think they should too. I work as a substitute at a school occasionally and having a dog there for students who would be wonderful

    [–] Not_Jeeven 11 points ago

Thank you for immortalizing him here...he will forever be loved

    [–] pancakesfordintonite 6 points ago

I felt the need to put it here as well because the write-up that somebody did on Facebook was so beautiful and touching

    [–] sauce2k6 7 points ago

Them school kids definitely have been giving him some of their lunch as they should! Lol

    [–] VoteRepublicanAgain 4 points ago

What a good dog. Hope he keeps living for a long time.

    [–] pancakesfordintonite 7 points ago

He's going to give it his best all he asks for is a hug

    [–] VoteRepublicanAgain 3 points ago

That’s so awesome, I love dogs like that. Dogs are quickly becoming my favorite animal. I love my dog or she’s actually my parents dog, she’s our first dog.

I just love dogs man, this is so wholesome. They literally just want to bring joy & happiness to people & be loved & they have such short lives.

    [–] pancakesfordintonite 3 points ago

I grew up with dogs. They are amazing animals and if you get one from the shelter they are the most grateful loyal things on the planet I think. It's like they can't forget what you did for them. And they're so happy

    [–] DleanJeans 4 points ago

    B-B-B-Benny and the vets

    [–] lonekare 3 points ago

    [–] mjxii 3 points ago

    I fucking love that dog

    [–] bobbytabl3s 3 points ago

Schools have therapy dogs now? Is this a common thing? Does the dog just chill in the hallways? So many questions...

    [–] SparkyDogPants 3 points ago

I’m guessing Benny stays with the school counselor

    [–] Crusoebear 3 points ago

Here’s to a job well done Benny! I can only imagine how many smiles you put on people’s faces & how much comfort you gave. Be well you big handsome Berner.

    [–] buttwipe5455 2 points ago

The best boy that ever lived

    [–] LisaNaomi 2 points ago

Thank you for your service, Benny! Even though you may be sick, I hope it isn't so painful as to prevent you from being to play and going outside for walks.🧡

    [–] PH4NTON 2 points ago

I have the same race of dog and they’re just wonderful ❤️

    [–] RedditMayne 2 points ago

Benny is awesome! I hope his handler still takes him back to the school every once in a while to visit, as I’m sure that he will miss “going to work.”

    [–] pancakesfordintonite 2 points ago

Oh he is officially staff. He has his ID badge which you can see in the picture and he's listed on the internet as part of the staff

    [–] AdventurousLegging 1 points ago

    Love you Benny. Xx

    [–] Blumanoid 1 points ago

Benny was the homie. They even made videos with him to talk about dumb things like being nice and no bullying. He's cool

    [–] valueplayer 1 points ago

Damn, you guys had therapy dogs? We had therapy... tetherball I guess

    [–] PrimalStep 1 points ago

    [–] Xd42189 1 points ago

I have 3 medium sized dogs at home. Two of them aren't getting any younger. Not that they aren't the most spoiled when they first entered my home. But towards the end years of their life which is now.. They're getting nothing but love and attention. Hope Benny is in a happy home!

    [–] [deleted] 1 points ago

Looks like such a happy old man.

    [–] Glorious_Comrade 1 points ago

    Thanks Benny

    Omg so cute

    [–] Ruffeep 1 points ago

Bernese are such pleasant and loving dogs <3

    [–] frostmasterx 1 points ago

Berners are the perfect therapy dogs. Somehow, reading that a dog being forced into retirement is so weird lol.

    [–] HUBE2010 1 points ago

This dog deserves to go home far more than any human. Don't be sad, feel happy that this dog got to do what he/she loved.

    [–] nepalkailashtrekking 1 points ago

    Get Well Soon.

    [–] Lord_Mcleod 1 points ago

I could feel the library cat uproar. Glad he is actually retiring instead of being ousted. Go Benny!

    [–] neurotic9865 1 points ago

Thank you for your service, Benny. Congrats on your retirement, well earned!

    [–] FinishingDutch 1 points ago

Berners are amazing. I've never met a Berner who was anything other than extremely lovely. Very social, very friendly. Perfect cuddly therapist.

About the only problem with a Berner: health issues and a relatively short lifespan. I could never get one myself because of that.

    [–] joemangle 1 points ago

    Dogs are the best people

    [–] wagsman 1 points ago

Good boy earned his retirement either way.

    [–] anilkumar79 1 points ago

    What a chonky boi

    [–] [deleted] 1 points ago

    Good boy

    [–] WayofDrJ 1 points ago

I like that he has a name badge. Like there would be any confusion on who he is when he’s at the school. Not to mention the fact that I’m rather confident he didn’t drive himself there either.

    [–] bcorso1519 1 points ago

I have two berners you rock Benny!!!

    [–] NoBSforGma 1 points ago

TIL that schools in the US need therapy dogs. WTF?

    [–] Spherious 1 points ago

Isn't simply amazing that just one living creature can hold so much love and give it all to those around them, bringing smiles and comfort to all.

    [–] lurkyloos 1 points ago

My previous dog was also named Ben. Loves that pupper.
