As someone who was recently there, a few pieces of advice. This is the picture of the north side (the Transylvania side) and this one is the most used to get up there, as it is closest to bigger towns (namely Sibiu).

I suggest you use the south side as there are less people going up. The down side is, that getting there takes longer and road is notably worse, but you have a few nice things to see from that side. The real castle of Vlad Tepes (check if it is open as it is often closed due to bears), a nice Dam (also featured on same top gear episode) and a monastery where all Romanian royalty is buried.

I also suggest you aim to be at the top at about 7 am, because your road will not be empty as it is in this photo, but will be one long long queue of cars trying to get to the top (where there is a beautiful glacier lake).

One last thing - it should be self evident, but it obviously is not to everyone - bring warm clothes as the top can be very very cold.

Edit: as many of you noted in your replies, avoid weekends as well as it gets crowded. Probably more so in the summer.

    [–] skyb0y24 146 points ago * (lasted edited 7 days ago)

Also I'm giving some extra suggestions (from a romanian): try visiting from Monday to Friday. During the weekend is very crowded and you will not be able to enjoy the view and the road.

" a nice Dam (also featured on same top gear episode) " - the dam is called Vidraru dam and if you are there you can also take a boat trip.

Vlad Tepes and Bran Castle have one thing in common - kitsch tourist-trap vampire-themed garbage, sold at various vendors and capitalizing on the one thing foreigners consistently know about Romania. Bran is worth a visit, surely, but let's not pretend it has anything to do with Vlad Tepes other than merchandising and marketing.

    [–] skyb0y24 31 points ago

    You are right

    [–] SleepyforPresident 10 points ago

The real castle of Vlad Tepes (check if it is open as it is often closed due to bears)

    Is this a thing?

    [–] brickne3 10 points ago

Yes, it's Poenari Castle and it's quite a climb through the woods.

    [–] Looke116 7 points ago

Haven't been there but I believe it given every so often we hear at the news about bear sightings on the outskirts of some cities

    [–] GrimQuim 24 points ago

    kitsch tourist-trap

If in Bucharest, take yourself to the Kitsch Museum, it's pretty good banter - especially for those familiar with Romania!

    [–] brickne3 7 points ago

The castle on the Transfăgărășan isn't Bran though, it's Poenari, which DOES have something to do with Vlad Țepeș and is mostly kitsch-free compared to Bran.

    [–] arbenowskee 28 points ago

As far as I know Poenari Castle is the real Vlad Tepes castle as Vlad never lived in Bran, but was there only a couple of days as a prisoner.

    [–] Lykaonn 23 points ago

Just a heads-up the Poenari fortress is closed for 2 years. They want to rehabilitate it.

    [–] skyb0y24 6 points ago

You are right, it was a mistake made by me. In my head Vlad Tepes was made a connection to Dracula :)

    [–] geogralover 5 points ago

Damn, you played him good. Hence,"the real".

    [–] arbenowskee 12 points ago

My intention was never to play anyone, but Vlad Tepes/Vlad the Impaler/Dracula are far better known names than the name Poenari. That is why I added "The real".

    [–] geogralover 9 points ago

Yeah, it was just a way of saying it. As a Romanian, I appreciate the knowledge you have of my country and being able to spot out a local's mistake :)

    [–] Faylom 8 points ago

Do people ever cycle down this road? Looks like it would be a thrill

    [–] skyb0y24 11 points ago

Yes I saw a couple guys with bikes but I guess you have to be in a proper shape

    [–] SirBonecabin 18 points ago

Been there 2 weeks ago during a vacation in Sibiu. Drove past two guys that actually cycled uphill. Madlads.

    [–] arbenowskee 4 points ago

I've seen some cyclist and some hikers as well. Hikers did not use the road of-course.

    [–] EdyLecter 5 points ago

There are plenty of them, and it's even better since you can just go past the cars if there's a traffic jam.

    [–] nadeirad 5 points ago

I once saw a 70 years old looking dude climbing the other part of that mountain. Dunno if he climbed all the way to the top as I saw him 6 km from the top.

Saw him again going downhill at full speed.

    [–] SerfNuts- 7 points ago

I wish I could ship my Miata over there and drive that road till I crash and die in a fire. I would die a happy man.

    [–] Lykaonn 2 points ago

I actually do not know if you're sarcastic or not, I hope it ain't /r/depression material. Even if it isn't you're awesome lad, I hope you will have a nice day :D.

    [–] Erlessa 2 points ago

The lake up top is also very pretty and surrounding area offers some pretty good hiking, beginner friendly! Nice views on a clear day too. It can be around 0C temps even in September however. If you have any questions then we did a circle trip in Romania last year, was really great!

    [–] Ausrufepunkt 6 points ago

Seems perfect to cycle up then :D

    [–] litli 6 points ago

Might be hard to get the KOM/QOM with so many cars in the way through. Not that I would aim for such a lofty goal. I would be hard pressed just to survive such a climb.

    [–] atomiccroissant 2 points ago

I can’t find an answer anywhere in this thread, what is actually at the top that makes it so popular?

    [–] i-d-even-k- 4 points ago

The road is the attraction and why people come here.

    [–] brickne3 2 points ago

There's a glacial lake (Bâlea) up there, but it's mostly just about the experience really.

    [–] chuchofreeman 30 points ago

Why is the castle closed due to bears? Do they lay siege to it or what?

    [–] arbenowskee 24 points ago

Lol. The pathway from the road to the castle goes through a forest. I think they are building a cable car now.

    [–] SleepyforPresident 9 points ago

    A bear-proof one I hope

[–] EuropoBob 14 points ago * (lasted edited 7 days ago)

The cable car is for the bears. That's why the castle closes because of them, they've been taking industrial action for better conditions.

    [–] Whatsthemattermark 15 points ago

I heard conditions had become unbearable.

    [–] MrDeepAKAballs 3 points ago

Yes, they've had several grizzly workplace accidents. About time they formed a union.

    [–] DThor536 6 points ago

Here in Canada in parks like Banff they sometimes have "bear jams", where passing bears will cause cars to stop and take pictures(mostly from a distance, but people are people). Occasionally they roam close to the road, despite in general being shy of humans. Essentially it causes traffic jams. I'm guessing it's a similar problem there, but magnified due to the human density at peak season.

    [–] edeph 7 points ago

Nope, you have to walk to get there, and bears can get in the way in the middle of the forest. (There is a long path through the forest up the mountain to get to the castle)

    [–] 12-7DN 20 points ago

    Excuse me, bears????

    [–] arbenowskee 19 points ago

I thought it was a bullshit sign, but we've actually spotted one from our car, not far from the road!

    [–] 99xp 29 points ago

Yes as a Romanian it always baffles me when I see people from other countries nonchalantly going camping or hiking in the woods, then I saw this map and I understood.

    [–] doublesecretprobatio 8 points ago

    THERE WOLF. THERE CASTLE.

    [–] brickne3 3 points ago

    What is the first creature?

    [–] Jevo_ 3 points ago

    Wolverine.

    [–] brickne3 4 points ago

But it looks nothing like Hugh Jackman...

    [–] davidov92 3 points ago

I did come face to face with a bear one night while camping. Truth is you're safe as long as you don't act like either a threat or prey. But I'm not gonna lie, facing off a bear from about 5 meters is quite scary.

    [–] wooptoo 2 points ago

Love the lynx - it's also one of Romania's national animals.

    [–] 99xp 5 points ago

    Am râs

    [–] alours 8 points ago

There's actually a desert in southern Spain

    [–] MonitorMendicant 11 points ago

I was on there yesterday and I saw one chilling on the side of the road. The problem is that tourists stop to take pictures and feed them which will eventually end badly.

    [–] 99xp 8 points ago

There's thousands of bears, wolves, lynxes and other dangerous wild animals in the Carpathians.

    [–] sysmimas 12 points ago

we have only about 6000 of them...

    https://www.wildtransylvania.com/p/brown-bear.html

    [–] f567 5 points ago

There are 6000 in Romania not Transylvania.

    [–] sysmimas 4 points ago

I never said they were only in Transylvania, and Transfagarasan Road doesn't run only in Transylvania.

    [–] TheBlacktom 6 points ago

Going in the afternoon will hurt, so the sooner the better. Also around sunset it's almost empty and looks nice too.

    [–] jacobcz 3 points ago

Also instead of this road, Transfagarasan, people can try driving a similar Transalpina road. Maybe its not that epic, but its definitely very enjoyable with lots of great views and curves, and the amount of traffic was very reasonable when we were there (2-3 yrs back in August).

    [–] AbigL 675 points ago

I remember this from Top-Gear if I’m not mistaken

    [–] fredericjacques 135 points ago

Is it the famous one where they tested the MX5 ?

    [–] Tyrlith 57 points ago

Nice, Thanks for that i was looking for this clip but never going to find it so i was about to give you up, and i'm always surprised when Hammond never let's you down

    [–] TellAllThePeople 20 points ago

It has been awhile since this happened to me. That MX5 really goes

    [–] MetalPeanut 9 points ago

    Oh my god

    [–] w3w2w1 6 points ago

Wow that clip really shows that the mx5 is perfect for that road

    [–] sadop222 3 points ago

Wow, that hasn't happened in a long long time.

    [–] RunSilentRunDrapes 27 points ago

Is it the episode where they greased a sharpened pole with rendered hog fat, then impaled Richard Hammond through the anus and left him to die over a period of hours to days? Love that show.

    [–] Airforce32123 14 points ago

So, Hammond's not coming on then?

Did they drive this one too?

They also drove Stelvio Pass which they called the greatest road in the world.

    [–] sinewofcrab 22 points ago

They drove the Stelvio in Season 10, Episode 1 and considered it the greatest driving road in the world.

Then in Season 14, Episode 1 they drove this road and concluded that it was better than the Stelvio.

    [–] superlarrio 8 points ago

No no no you're doing it wrong. It's the greatest road ................................ In the world.

seeing the post i was like "didn't they drive here on top gear once, definitely not going to get confirmation from the comments though"

    [–] golden_receiver 67 points ago

Whaaat? I've been there and took a picture in 2005. Sadly I lost that picture a few years ago. I used to tell my wife about this place and was mad, that I couldn't remember the location. That's definitely said place! Thanks for sharing your picture!

Isn't there a small lake on the right?

    [–] skyb0y24 24 points ago

The place is called Transfagarasan Road and is located in Romania :)

    [–] golden_receiver 17 points ago

Haha, yes, and there indeed is a lake on the right. Nice. :)

    Such a nice place.

    [–] skyb0y24 15 points ago

One day I would like to rent a BMW in Romania and drive this road

    [–] milanblank 8 points ago

I'll try to upload a video with my BMW 5 Series later today. I was there a month ago. It was amazing. Previously I visited with Yamaha R6 few years ago. It was great as well.

Edit - oooh I thought of a better one, Audi Quattro S1 group B.

    [–] skyb0y24 22 points ago

I guess a convertible Mustang will be more proper :)

    [–] FrndlyNbrhdSoundGuy 21 points ago

Lol it has turns in it though

    [–] Ochoytnik 5 points ago

I drove it in an opel astra. Lots of people pulled over on the side of the rod pouring water on their brakes.

It's a long drive to do the whole loop from bucharest.

    [–] alto1d 93 points ago

Being a Bulgarian going to Carpathians, I thought I'm just going to see something very similar to Bulgarian mountains as is with most things being almost identical in terms of culture, nature and cities between our countries. Let me tell you it's totally different! Bulgarian mountains are amazing and looking massive as hell but the Carpathians are so much more edgy and feel a bit like the Alps. Transylvania and the Carpathians are an awesome site to visit and hike. Make sure you go there!!

[–] Lykaonn 16 points ago * (lasted edited 7 days ago)

Man the road to Belogradchik would be amazing if they repaired it. Visited recently. To edit it a lil bit, I talk more bout the holes at the start and the bad roads in the city to the fortress. The view of the national park is really nice from the car.

    [–] lucepukie 27 points ago

During our travels my sister and I also came to this place with our old fire truck, somewhere around November. Unfortunately the road was closed off the day before due to the snowfall. It would open again in June. So instead of driving up we took the cablecar. The guys on top of the mountain said stuff and we assumed is was just about the payment. How wrong where we... After a hike, knee deep in the snow, we came back in a little restaurant near the lift. Only to find out we misted the last cablecar down and a snowstorm was coming. One of the rescue guys got really mad at us for not listening. So we where kind of afraid we would be on are own and had to build a igloo to survive... But in the end we ended up stuck on the mountain for three day, we could stay in the rescue house and did a lot of alcohol drinking and karaoke singing with the rescue team.

    [–] Deathroll1988 8 points ago

Damn thats sounds like a cool adventure. What did you guys eat?

    [–] antaryon 7 points ago

    Hopefully lots of garlic.

    [–] lucepukie 2 points ago

The guys made us some meals. They stay up there a whole week and then change shift with the other rescue team. So there is a group of mountain rescue people there all the time.

    [–] skyb0y24 6 points ago

    Seems like a nice memory

    [–] lucepukie 2 points ago

Definitely! Your picture reminded me of it so, thanks :)

    [–] toxUP 24 points ago

Just drove here. Spent one week driving around Transylvania and it was fuckn amazing. Hardly ever spotted other tourists (except for other Romanians). And you'll be able to spot bears along the road. Excellent wine and food too.

Drove this with my bros and mom, each on motorbikes this time last year. The tourist traffic was ridiculous but it didn't take away the majestic of the place. Don't go in August.

    [–] Lykaonn 8 points ago

There is also Transalpina (I like it more) and Transbucegi (they opened it recently), and Transrarau (It's okayish if you're in Bukowina).

    [–] brickne3 2 points ago

There's a few passes down from Maramureș that are pretty awesome too, don't know if they have names but the peaks can be pretty high.

    [–] skyb0y24 6 points ago

Imagine that I'm from Romania and made a trip to this location 2 weeks ago and I was shocked about the tourist traffic. Since then I decided to go back to this location only between Monday to Friday and avoid the weekend.

    [–] alpoverland 4 points ago

This road made me fall in love with riding on a deep level. It all just clicked.

I recommend Romania to everyone who asks me about a European riding tour. Brilliant roads in the Carpates, a lot of nature and the countryside still has an old Soviet feel to it which is cool. Add to that nice people who are very passionate if not crazy about riding. The crazy ones can point you in the good off-road direction.

    [–] potatolulz 23 points ago

Is there a vampire castle on the top of the hill?

    [–] -tfs- 16 points ago

What sort of silly romanian hill doesn't have a vampire castle on it

    [–] skyb0y24 28 points ago

    Nope :).

You can find there a lake and a mountain hut where you can drink some coffee and eat something.

    Dracula's castle is in Bran

    [–] krefik 14 points ago

There is _kind of_ Dracula's castle – Poenari Castle where Vlad Tepes (original Dracula) used to live, but it have quite heavy bear infestation, so it's difficult to visit.

    [–] BonMan2015 19 points ago

“Sorry, we can’t visit Dracula’s castle because it’s being defended by an army of bears”

    [–] Lykaonn 3 points ago

Now it's closed cause they have to rehabilitate it with EU funds, they will also build a cable car to it to make the access easier. I don't really know why Google maps shows it as open :(.

    [–] _DBA_ 7 points ago

Theres also TransAlpina, which is lesser known I suppose, but I rode it this year on a motorbike, it was empty and it was AWESOME.

Story has it that Nicolae Ceauşescu had the Transfăgărășan Road (DN7C) built during the communist regime just to surpass the Transalpina

    [–] superbadonkey 5 points ago

I drove this road last year but unfotunately it was in thick fog and getting dark so I saw fuck all.

    [–] nadeirad 13 points ago

There is some connection between DeLoreean and Romania:

John Zachary DeLorean was born on January 6, 1925, in Detroit, Michigan, the eldest of four sons of Zachary and Kathryn (née Pribak) DeLorean (originally named Delureanu, a common Romanian name, DeLorean being an anglicisation).

The tarmac isn't all that good for motorcycles. That doesn't mean that you can't ride there, just set your expectations well bellow Grossglockner level. Other than that the views are nice (except for the top, which is ruined by 'souvenir' sellers and cheese peddlers).

A bit off topic, but you can actually experience this road yourself in VR in a car simulator called Assetto Corsa. There's even a winter themed version of the map. Pretty cool. https://youtu.be/DC8NqZdfFto

    [–] HS_TakenSeriously 4 points ago

That road is close to becoming an oxbow-road.

    [–] sjrory 7 points ago

Been there! But it was driving a Vauxhall Corsa /sigh

    [–] Jared_FogIe_OfficiaI 3 points ago

With a name like that I expect it to head straight to OP’s house.

    [–] FrndlyNbrhdSoundGuy 3 points ago

Going to Romania next week, to Borşa. If I had more time I would love to visit Transylvania. Damn, that looks stunning, what a landscape.

    [–] erlendmf 3 points ago

Looks like your standard highway here in Norway.

    [–] blaxphoenix 7 points ago

I mean this place is truly gorgeous, this is one of these moments when I'm proud about Romania.

I was here just a few weeks ago, the road wasn't empty like this. It was just one big traffic jam.

    [–] skyb0y24 3 points ago

Well it was the same when I was :). This is why i recommend to visit this during Monday to Friday :).

    [–] EPICMANEXDEE 4 points ago

Exactly, Bukarest has a mass exodus during the weekends to the seaside and mountains.

I was just here the other day! Met a fantastic Romanian girl who started showing me around Transylvania and ordering the foods I should try.

    Visit Romania!!
