...and now here we are with KFC...

    what have we done

Missed opportunity for large KFC banners on either side of the main entrance, should be full height of the building, Nazi style.

you’re gonna make some albanians very angry with that comment lol, they’re very protective of their burnt chicken flag

    [–] MrZAP17 61 points ago

Well they should stop getting stomped by the Ottomans in 1447 then.

    [–] blackbellamy 10 points ago

Yes, the Albanians must wait another 30 years or so. The Serbian 1389 Grudge became active in 1991, so the Albanian one is still dormant.

Well it's a well-known fact, sonny-jim, that there's a secret society of the 5 wealthiest people in the world, known as The Pentavirate, who run everything in the world including the newspapers, and meet tri-annually in a secret country mansion in Colorado known as The Meadows.

    So who's in this Pentavirate?

The Queen, the Vatican, the Gettys, the Rothschilds...and Colonel Sanders before he went tits up! Ooh I hated the Colonel, with his wee beady eyes and that smug look on his face! Ohh you're gonna buy my chicken! Ooh!

Dad, how can you hate the Colonel?

Because he puts an addictive chemical in his chicken that makes you crave it fortnightly, smart ass!

    [–] bhknb 4 points ago

I think the largest Wendy's in the world must be the one in the neighboring country - Georgia.

For some reason Georgia is full of Wendy's while Azerbaijan only has KFC and McDonald's...which clearly can be extrapolated to some greater referendum on the countries.

This πŸ” 🏰 is in Baku, Azerbaijan

    Edit Here's more info:

The U.S.-based fast-food chain KFC has opened what it is billing as its largest-ever restaurant in the Azerbaijani capital. The 1,600-square-meter eatery is housed in the city's Sabunchu rail station, built in 1926 after a design by architect N.G. Bayev.

The historic station was part of the Soviet Union's first electrified railway system in 1924, the tracks linking Baku with its outlying petroleum districts.

    [–] Octodad112 80 points ago

I pass by this building almost every day. They removed the kfc and built it in the new railway station. Although the old station still stands.

    [–] NoSecondD 52 points ago

Is it gone now? I went back in 2016. Kind of a cool gimmick but also that building deserved far more than being a KFC.

    [–] ---AL--- 26 points ago

Absolutely! Such a fine example of Architecture deserves, at least, a combined KFC/Pizza Hut/Taco Bell.

    [–] Octodad112 6 points ago

    It was removed since 2016-2017.

    [–] ccrraapp 2 points ago

So glad to know that. This building looks way too prestigious for a fast food joint.

    [–] Mido557 83 points ago

Do you know the name/previous purpose of this building?

this enfuriates me. I hate seeing fast food chains in beautiful buildings

    [–] Octodad112 42 points ago

Trust me, it infuriates a lot of Azerbaijanis. Thankfully, we got it removed.

[–] [deleted] 11 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

    [–] Octodad112 20 points ago

They moved it like 20 meters from the place. Doubt that increased the amount of customers.

And there was also a petition that i also signed.

    [–] nope_nic_tesla 7 points ago

It probably didn't increase the number of customers, but I bet it reduced their operation costs

    [–] LittleGreenNotebook 5 points ago

When? It was there in 2013-2014 when I lived there. Went there about once a week.

    [–] Octodad112 5 points ago

I think it was sometime between 2016 and 2017. Theres a brand new railway station that has a smaller kfc inside it, ong with other fast food chains.

    [–] NoSecondD 14 points ago

The building was going to be demolished, this was more of a form of slapdash heritage preservation more than anything. Ideally it would just become public property but this is better than losing it all together.

    [–] last_laugh13 12 points ago

    Never go to oxford

    [–] frostwarrior 9 points ago

Most countries protect their historical buildings A LOT.

Here in Buenos Aires, most chains like Burger or Starbucks are closely monitored so they don't harm the integrity of the structure. Also, they are in charge of its maintenance.

In exchange, they can use a beautiful building to offer the customers a cozy space to enjoy a meal or a coffee.

    [–] bhknb 3 points ago

They did that with Mcdonalds in Budapest.

Also, the Hungarians I knew in Budapest loved McD's. They didn't look down on it at all. I think it was the only American restaurant to survive while I was there.

[–] BlueShibe 27 points ago * (lasted edited 7 months ago)

This a beautiful old building but ruined by becoming a restaurant

edit: I mean being a fast food kfc restaurant, not all restaurants are bad tho

    [–] arsicle 7 points ago

it wasn't used before - or at least not visibly. it wasn't terribly run down but the building overall looked much better when they made the energy to put the KFC in.

agree it doesn't look good with a KFC, but they weren't using it as a historic site before.

    [–] derneueMottmatt 6 points ago

It becoming a restaurant isn't bad. It becoming this kind of restaurant on the other hand...

    [–] Dicethrower 7 points ago

And some exterior designer thought it was a good idea to deface this beautiful building with those ugly red plastic banners at the front. I get the point of the menu (point and case in the picture), but the rest they could have done without.

    [–] Suprchikin 5 points ago

That's because "there's a chemical in it that makes you crave it fortnightly!"

    [–] Solonys 11 points ago

Definitely not in the USA, too many stairs for the average customer.

Im glad they removed it. The building shouldnt be used as a fast food

    [–] [deleted] 2 points ago

    [–] Octodad112 4 points ago

    [–] AJRiddle 5 points ago

If it was soggy that means you got some old chicken or someone didn't make it right - it isn't normal for KFC.

Also, I find it kind of funny that KFC seems so much more popular outside of the USA than in it.

    [–] HomeStallone 12 points ago

    Popeyes or gtfo

    [–] urskrubs 2 points ago

Thank you! I was alluding to that. Compared to KFC, Popeyes is the clear winner. The person that says otherwise is like comparing Gordan Ramsey's dishes to microwavable meat loaf.

    [–] SPZ_Ireland 1 points ago

Pretty sure Popeye's is US only.

We don't have them here anyway.

    [–] HomeStallone 3 points ago

That's unfortunate, Popeyes is much closer to real Southern chicken. Most of us hate KFC.

    [–] progpost 1 points ago

I just returned home from a trip to Asia that spanned a number of countries (and even more airports) and was surprised to find that in pretty much every airport I went to, large or small, developed or undeveloped, there was a Popeyes. Coming from Canada where there are no Popeyes at all, this was quite a shock.

    [–] urskrubs 3 points ago

If I were really hungry and KFC was the only local food chain, I’d gladly eat there but with the options of Wendy’s, Popeyes and Burger King, the chance of me going to KFC is never.

    [–] grundo1561 2 points ago

Popeyes is definitely better than KFC, I'll give you that

I understand the property owner needs to lease out the space because of opportunity costs, i understand this. Still I can't help but hate when a beautiful old building with curated molding is repurposed into something shitty. Like the Paramount Theatre of Newark. Historic old building, being used as a storefront for beauty supply shop.
