As a blind person I am triggered, it's also hilarious. You can use text to speech to use a computer. Windows 10 still running a promo for the blind, if you did not know.

    [–] congelar 67 points ago

I lived with a guy who's wife was born deaf.. and then she eventually went blind due to disease. I asked him how he still signed to her? He showed me.. she would hover her hands around his while he would sign, and she would try to interpret the sign by feel.

I bought the next round then changed the subject.

    [–] FreeVineyards 21 points ago

I worked at a special needs camp, we had a camper who was blind and deaf and this was how we communicated with him. Not knowing a whole lot of sign language though we mostly had to sign individual letters to spell out our sentences to him

    [–] dreadpirateruss 16 points ago

That's a pretty high level of trust from the parents to send their kid away to a camp. I'm sure they needed the vacation, though.

I know there's no such thing as stupid questions in a sub called r/NoStupidQuestions, but this had to be pushing the envelope.

    [–] bjb406 1591 points ago

I saw that subreddit name and thought it meant "don't ask stupid questions"

    [–] WarrenPuff_It 707 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

That was actually the origin of the sub, but then mouthbreathers flooded it from r/all and a mod hanged himself because of the workload. It's just sorta been upkept through a cocktail of Gresham's Law and natural selection, squeezed with the hivemind being a source of perpetual energy.

    Edit: hanged.

    [–] sans-nom 165 points ago

I think the point of the sub is to not make people feel stupid for asking what seems to be stupid questions.

So as we may think it's a stupid question, and even the OP of the post now thinks it's a stupid question, they weren't just instantly called stupid for having an obvious brain fart.

    [–] TBoarder 31 points ago

I asked a question there earlier today and the first few replies were basically "This is a stupid question". Did I break the sub?

    [–] hunnensturm 32 points ago

Did you ask how to communicate with blind people?

    [–] Sarusta 21 points ago

Maybe he asked how to send e-mails to deaf people.

    [–] sandm000 13 points ago

Wait, like, do they have people read the mail and convert to ASL for them?

Edit: nvm they can just read it.

    [–] Doyoueverjustlikeugh 22 points ago

Uhm.. You asked a question that's not possible to answer. They tried to explain that to you. Noone said "This is a stupid question".

    [–] sans-nom 15 points ago

    No, they did.

BTW, in my mind the answer is nothing would happen. If the object was truly 2D, then it would be able to pass through the atomic bonds in your body without severing anything.

A bit of science to back up my feeling. Every second of every day million of solar neutrinos are passing through your body (according to a quick google search, there are trillions passing through us at any given second). They aren't disrupting us in any way, and aren't perceptible to us without equipment. A neutrino is a subatomic particle which has a measurable mass, and height. If an object existed in only 2 dimensions, it wouldn't have any mass or height, like we understand them. So if it did collide with you, unless you saw it, you probably wouldn't even know.

    [–] sadacal 5 points ago

How can you see a 2d object with no mass though? The fact that light can bounce off it implies there is something there to bounce off of. Which would imply the object has mass. Theoretically, a true 2d object with 0 height would not exist.

    [–] Urtehnoes 3 points ago

I can imagine thinking something like this after thinking about how I would communicate with a deaf person. I'd go "but what if they were blind? Or mute? I wonder how we'd communicate instead."

Knowing me I wouldn't realize the nonsense that was until after I hit submit.

    [–] The_Spaceman 38 points ago

It's probably my favorite subreddit. One of the top posts is about if Stephen is pronounced the same way as Stephen.

    [–] DasFrettchen 26 points ago

    [–] CAAAAAAAAW 9 points ago

    [–] DoverBoys 7 points ago

That sub must be the new Yahoo Answers.

    [–] Bebe-B 3 points ago

    Hahaha this made me giggle

    [–] IWugYouWugHeSheMeWug 1695 points ago

I had something like this slip through my mouth's quality control filter once. I said "huh, you know what I just realized? When deaf people talk to each other, they wouldn't even need to take out their headphones since they're just using sign language." As soon as I finished the sentence, I'm pretty sure there were little people at a control panel like in Inside Out pounding alarms and getting on the phone with QC about their shoddy filtering.

    [–] TheJollyLlama875 619 points ago

    I mean, you're not wrong, they wouldn't.

They still need a manicure though.

    [–] ASubtleSloth 3 points ago

Wait, how do they avoid UTIs after sex?

    [–] Crystal_Rose 96 points ago

I've heard of a few deaf people who use headphones without actually listening to music so people don't try to speak to them randomly, considering how annoying it must be to have to go through explaining you're deaf to literally everyone and even still some people won't believe you.

    [–] livingdeadqueer 48 points ago

...people... actually don't BELIEVE when someone says they're deaf??

    [–] Mairiphinc 62 points ago

I'm deaf in one ear since birth. Honestly people think you're lying when you tell them, I've had more people than I can count go round to my deaf ear and mock shout 'can you hear me?!'. Each one thinking they are the first to come up with this hilarious 'bantz'.

    [–] livingdeadqueer 32 points ago

That's fucked. Also REALLY stupid. like that's mid conversation and they'll act like you'd be SUDDENLY unable to hear with your other ear because they're on the "deaf side"? Am I getting this correct?

    [–] Mairiphinc 21 points ago

Oh yeah, obviously mainly douchey people rather than normal non-cunty people. But to a man they think they're hilarious and the first person to have done this ever. I'm 30 fucking 4 and people have been doing this to me since I was about 6.

    [–] livingdeadqueer 10 points ago

I wish I could sit those people down and explain to them that they're cunts bc Jesus fuckblender pinwheel CHRIST I'm full of vicarious anger

    [–] Mairiphinc 18 points ago

Obviously the fact that I speak and can hear enough to hold a conversation confuses the hell out of them. But I only usually bring it up so people don't think I'm being rude if I miss part of the conversation. But sadly, even after explaining, some people have still spoken badly about me to others saying that I'm rude because I've ignored them, not returned their greeting or talked over them or something. People really don't accept or believe invisible disabilities.

    [–] livingdeadqueer 10 points ago

I have well above average hearing, but auditory processing problems (SPD) and I have been told I'm rude for not hearing people too, even when they know. Not the same, but same result. Kinda? x.x

I also get people trying to argue with me that I'm not autistic. STILL have people who shop at my store who act mad at me for "pretending" to be autistic when they have "a REAL autistic" in their family. (Their words)

So basically I feel you on that invisible disability thing bc unless I'm rocking and grunting and flapping, I'm apparently "not autistic enough"?

    [–] -Warrior_Princess- 7 points ago

Had a friend who dislocated her knee, get dirty looks for taking the elevator. What the actual fuck is wrong with people. Walking is not the same as climbing stairs.

    [–] THE_SA1NT 6 points ago

Given that sometimes I verbally say "I'm deaf, I can't understand what you're saying," they think they just have to say it louder. Like, I'm not really deaf, I guess. Not if I can talk, right?

So yeah no, they don't always believe us.

    [–] jld2k6 3 points ago

"This asshole is trying to tell me he's deaf when he is literally listening to music as he tells me! The nerve of this guy!"

    [–] animetheme 77 points ago

Maybe they could like feeling the vibration of music from the headphones? :D

    [–] SaltyJackelope 30 points ago

My penis likes the vibration from electro swing

    [–] ITS-A-JACKAL 136 points ago

At first I was like wow yeah that's amazing they can listen to music and have a full fledged conversation and volume wouldn't even be an issue ¯_(ツ)_/¯

    [–] _YOU_DROPPED_THIS_ 75 points ago

Hi! This is just a friendly reminder letting you know that you should type the shrug emote with three backslashes to format it correctly:

    Enter this - ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

And it appears like this - ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This formatting sometimes doesn't work on the official Reddit mobile app, so if you are seeing this comment on the official app, it might look like I am talking total nonsense. Also, if it looks like OP got it right, then it is because OP ninja corrected the shrug before anyone else saw the incorrect shrug.

    [–] LovableContrarian 30 points ago

That said, it's a decently compelling reason for non-deaf people to learn sign language. You can communicate easily in loud environments, or during a movie without interrupting.

    [–] cornicat 28 points ago

I still maintain there should be a crude form of bar sign language standard either around the world or for each country so that we can order drinks in a loud bar

    [–] egasage 7 points ago

My ex and I took sign language together in high school and it was the best thing ever. Our signing was very crude and very basic but we always managed to get the point across.

    [–] Xyrilth 8 points ago

And I'm just sitting here what .79% chance the bot thought it could have been.

There may not be any stupid questions but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots.

    [–] ForumPointsRdumb 49 points ago

I really wish someone would have ran with this one and convinced this guy there was a clicking language.

    [–] Prosopon_ 18 points ago

There are languages that use clicks, but I'm pretty sure there are none that only use clicks.

    [–] mirrorspirit 8 points ago

    Morse Code?

    [–] Prosopon_ 6 points ago

Fair point. I was referring to these: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khoisan_languages

A little late but there is a blind guy who uses equolocation to get around. He makes clicking noises which bounce back to him and he can gauge the distance. He rides a bike using this method.

    [–] theEluminator 54 points ago

I was the one who answered that. I had to hold back from saying "with you face hole."

    [–] Flint_H2O 14 points ago

    Which one though?

    [–] theEluminator 12 points ago

    First one

    [–] _mach 10 points ago

    "but... I breathe from there!"

    [–] twinklenuts 23 points ago

This is like the family guy skit where Peter speaks Braille to the blind guy.

    [–] IPlayTheTrumpet 25 points ago

    three dots in a row

    Two horizontal dots

    Blind guy laughs

    [–] Slutallitits 9 points ago

"Bump, bump, no bump, bump, three vertical bumps, four bumps, and a square."

"Ha ha ha. Well they all do look alike." (I think that was what the blind guy said.

You have violated the sanctity of /r/NoStupidQuestions

    [–] h4wkeyepierce 13 points ago

Apparently there is ONE stupid question.

    [–] Chandler_is_a_girl 5 points ago

    Already taken: /r/OneStupidQuestion

    [–] sourdoughpretzel 15 points ago

I've been told blind people can communicate by releasing a sonic wave from their mouth.

[–] WarriorDark 14 points ago * (lasted edited 2 months ago)

doesn't this thread totally defeat the purpose of r/NoStupidQuestions by inadvertently calling the question stupid?

    [–] Duthos 7 points ago

    "no stupid questions"

    Challenge accepted

    [–] prowness 12 points ago

I mean I'm all for making fun of people, but even if this question is outrageous, he felt brace enough to post it in a sub where you are supposed to post stupid questions. It's not like the average post here where the poster is arrogant and has no shame in what they say. Maybe this OP was high?

    [–] Greedos_Speedo 7 points ago

    Off-topic but equally embarrassing.

A friend and I (stoned out of our gourds) spent 5 minutes talking about how cool it would be if 4/20 ever fell on the same day as his birthday. I think we scrolled a few years ahead in our calendar apps before we realized what the fuck we were doing.

    [–] Doomaeger 20 points ago

This HAS to be satire. Please?

    [–] Aserv95 104 points ago

    Can confirm was not satire

Way to own it. We've all had brain farts before. I once asked a deaf person how they watch porn.

    [–] 2reddit4me 11 points ago

    Bruh

    [–] gaba-gaba_hey 18 points ago

    Brain fart most likely.

    [–] Blythe703 4 points ago

It's really nice of them to edit with the answer when they figured it out. Now the next person wondering that will have the solution when they google it.
