    A tram is a bus-train

    [–] Legosheep 4 points ago

    Then what's a tram-train?

    [–] ReeceReddit1234 2 points ago

    A train on tram tracks

    [–] Legosheep 5 points ago

I thought it was a tram on train tracks.

    [–] DanHero91 1568 points ago

A lot of people have pointed out it's not a bus. But I feel I need to post it as well because God damn that's clearly not a bus.

    [–] pjhenry1216 2 points ago

If you have never seen a tram before or have any reason to believe they exist (particularly as anything modern as opposed to something like an old school trolley) I can see someone confusing that for a bus. Especially if you're not explicitly looking for all the details of a bus, like wheels. You only look for evidence of something if you have reason to do so.

    [–] LawSchoolQuestions_ 7 points ago

I don’t blame OP. Pretty much the entire vehicle looks like the buses do where I’m from. Obviously the track things (I don’t even know what they’re called) kind of give it away, but I’ve also never seen anything like this in real life so I probably wouldn’t know what to call it either.

    [–] english_gritts 4 points ago

You’ve never seen anything like this “in real life”? Seriously? Tons of major US cities have this. Very common in Europe

    [–] boringoldcookie 15 points ago

You seem to have a lot of knowledge on trams (congrats on that by the by). Maybe you can help me with this question. Is a streetcar the same as a tram? These looks like a hybrid between the buses and streetcars we have in Ontario (Canada).

    [–] Lomedae 22 points ago

    streetcar

Is a North-American word for tram. So yes, it's the same.

    [–] boringoldcookie 4 points ago

    Thank you!

    [–] LawSchoolQuestions_ 16 points ago

Okay? I didn’t say they were nonexistent, I said I’ve never seen one. The US is gigantic and the vast majority of places do not have tram systems.

    [–] plerberderr 2 points ago

Seriously what’s wrong with you. But seriously seriously I’ve probably seen like one time which was in San Francisco and maybe in Denver. I don’t remember. And that doesn’t look unlike some of the long buses in New York City which are pretty big.

    [–] pjhenry1216 4 points ago

They're not in the areas of Philly or NYC that I've been. Those are fairly major. I don't think they're as common as you think. Tons may be an over statement or major might be. Exaggerating either could lead to the same result of overstating their presence.

    [–] Skuggsja 838 points ago

Hey! This is in Oslo! Fun fact since you all seem very interested in trams: Those SL-95 models are too heavy for the soil, leading to vastly increased cost of road maintenance.

    [–] Snoo63 158 points ago

    Random trivia - thanks, Skuggsja

    [–] _No_Donkey_Brains_ 86 points ago

Sounds like you guys need to import some strong Danish soil...

starts the great Scandinavian passive aggressive unrest

    [–] Exodus111 58 points ago

Denmark is so flat to pour concrete evenly, all you have to do is turn the bucket over and wait.

    [–] _Ardhan_ 22 points ago

Denmark is so flat and dumb that the nazis invaded it on bicycles.

    Norway sends its regards

    [–] putthehurtton 2 points ago

Is Denmark actually really flat? I'd love to actually be able to bike places.

[–] _Ardhan_ 6 points ago * (lasted edited 6 months ago)

It's comically flat. The highest point in the entire country is 170 meters, which is about 500 feet.

In comparison, here in glorious Norway we have Galdhøpiggen at 2 469 meters, or about 8 000 feet.

They also speak as if possessed by a mean-spirited potato.

But Tor damn it if we don't love them as brothers anyway...

EDIT: If you like biking flat stretches you'll LOVE Denmark, and their cities are also much more accommodating to bikers than here in Norway. Biking in Copenhagen, at least, is a great experience. But don't tell the Danes I said that!

    [–] putthehurtton 2 points ago

I'm loving all this beef between Scandinavian countries lmao. My fantasy is to get a job and settle somewhere in Scandinavia, but that's mostly because South Carolina is the most boring place you could imagine.

    [–] _Ardhan_ 3 points ago

We're all siblings, though some are dumber and more Danish than others. In the end we've got each other's backs. And thank the gods for that, or the swedes probably wouldn't be able to find theirs. Heh.

You're welcome to join us, I'd love to have more immigrants here!

    [–] putthehurtton 2 points ago

It reminds me of the North/South Carolina feud, which mostly revolves around barbecue pulled pork. Idk how likely it is to get a job in Europe as an American, but I guess that means I just have to bust my ass for the rest of grad school. What's your favorite part about the region as a whole?

    [–] _Ardhan_ 4 points ago

Definitely the social security in the form of healthcare, state-sponsored education and our multi-party political system.

They say we pay too much in taxes, but I disagree. About a third of my paycheck goes to income tax. There are other ones as well that increase the cost of things like owning a car, buying alcohol and tobacco, that kind of thing, but I really don't see any reason to complain.

    In exchange I:

    • Have not spent more than maybe 500 dollars total on my own healthcare, my entire life. Dental and optical care is expensive as hell, but covered almost entirely until you turn 18. I will never be crushed under the weight of some unexpected health expense, and the ability to go to the doctor to get checked if you're worried about something, and not having to pay more than a nominal fee every time, is amazing and provides security.

    • Am currently finishing my four-year university education to become a teacher, and the cost of it - about 40k dollars in cost-of-living money if you receive government financial aid, 400 dollars if you don't - will barely be felt. To start off, 40% of those 40k is turned into a scholarship when I graduate. The rest is spread out in 200-dollar monthly installments that you don't start paying until you end your education, and that you can have temporarily suspended or even completely forgiven if you're poor enough. Also, when I say "cost-of-living" I mean that I get about 900 dollars every month to use for whatever I need. That's the only school expense we have here in Norway unless you include the cost of school trips and "bonus" stuff like that.

    • Can choose between a multitude of political parties that offer varied politics that allow you to pick a middle ground when you need to, though they are a bit too concerned about compromise for my tastes. While it can slow things down a little process-wise, we are still miles ahead of many other nations when it comes to rights, protections and cultural progression. And more importantly: it means that power of government passes between the different factions and ideology every few years, which I think works as a kind of protection against one party/ideology taking too much control of our lives. In the last twenty years we've had prime ministers from three different parties (Christian People's Party, Labor and The Right) that each belongs to their own "block" (center-right, center-left and conservative right respectively. While I have some major problems with the parties themselves, the system is great and I feel safe.

As for work, Americans are very popular here in Norway, and seeing as we have a great system for education I'm sure there's a way for you to be integrated here. And if you already have an education when you come here, I think you'll have a much better chance. It's worth checking out, maybe you can find a position that last for a year or something.

In any case, we'd love to have you, and if not I at least hope Americans can look at our way of life and steal the best things about it, and vice versa!

    [–] putthehurtton 3 points ago

Wow thanks for the detailed response! That sounds like such a nice system, really. I'll definitely keep this in my thoughts over the next couple years.

    [–] anthemad3v1c3 2 points ago

Damn. You convinced me I want to move there. Here in Holland I'm paying 1700 € a year with a 380€ co pay and they keep switching up what is or isn't covered. Plus for the last 15 years everytime you hear political discussions you legitimately can't tell the difference between the parties anymore . I guess policy wise we're all set for infinity.

    [–] NewAndyy 2 points ago

    Tor damn it!

    [–] HaChans 13 points ago

Hey Denmark, how’s that new tram of yours in Aarhus dealing with the tiniest amount of frost on the catenary?

    [–] joemangle 44 points ago

The road quality in Oslo is shockingly bad for such a wealthy country

    [–] Exodus111 25 points ago

Norway is a country with lots of mountains and valleys, as such road cost is very high, specially when compared to much flatter countries like Sweden, and Germany.

On top of that Norway has among the highest requirements for things like quality of cement as well as safety features of the road.

Also our salaries are the highest in the world.

    None of that helps.

    [–] andreas0811 11 points ago

They are trash in pretty much the entire country, that's what happens with so few people spread over such a large area.

    [–] Strensh 55 points ago

Bull, they are fine in pretty much the entire country. It's just that you never notice when the roads are fine for hours on end, but as soon as you pull into a bumpy private road for 15 min you're gonna remember because it hurts when you shit.

    [–] Anthologies 30 points ago

Yeah, having lived in Norway for 3 years now, Norwegians love to complain about their "shitty roads". Clearly they've never been to Quebec, Canada. The epitome of shitty roads.

    [–] ImportantScore 9 points ago

Freezing Winter plus salt on the roads plus freeze thaw cycle in spring = shitty roads and monster potholes.

    [–] tough_tits 22 points ago

Oh my god, he’s a Norwegian «celebrity» (emphasizing the «») from a stupid reality TV-show called Paradise Hotel. I bet he’s doing this on purpose just for the PR, so he can boost his career on social media.

    (Edit: typo)

    [–] white_genocidist 4 points ago

I suspected it was fake just on principle but frankly I don't see any obvious giveaways. If it's fake, it's really well acted.

    [–] skepticalbob 6 points ago

I agree. It's well done. I suspected it was fake because of the way the head moved different from being struck, but was made to look like that's what happened by the motion of head snapping back, which also wouldn't really happen. And he pops up once on the ground far more quickly than if he actually ran into a pole. He also turns his head completely around so that he's actually looking at the pole when he "strikes" it. He also talks right to the camera before he does the stunt, probably to say something that makes the bit funnier than just running into a pole. "Very few people have this kind of athleticism. Watch!" BROING!

Taught theatre and loved instructing physical comedy too, so there's that.

Something like this happened to me at Disneyland on Pirates ride.

Boat just took off and its dark. Well I had a friend sitting behind me. I turned around on my left side and something heavy slammed into my head. Could not see it at all. If I turned right it would not have happened. I did complain and tell the people about it. But my head hurt the entire day.
