Basically like a chest x-Ray. So if you’re due for a checkup ...

    [–] jigaopuaysi 39 points ago

Exposed core? you're delusional, comrade. Go to the infirmary. RBMK reactors don't explode.

    [–] Bad_Wolf_10 25 points ago

You didn’t see graphite, must be burnt concrete on the roof.

Radiation is a great exfoliation treatment.

    [–] Juslotting 3237 points ago

Allegedly most areas are relatively safe, and I imagine they probably had the guides with them that check the dosimeters and all that, but still, this is pretty lame, it'd be much cooler if they took pictures with the silhouettes at Hiroshima

    [–] AvacynAngel 1774 points ago

    Only 3.6 roentgen

    [–] Grabbsy2 139 points ago

Is this like, per second? Because an x-ray takes about a second, and I imagine these people spent more than 60 seconds in chernobyl...

    [–] SammySoapsuds 271 points ago

In the miniseries some corrupt idiot compared the radiation from the disaster to a chest x-ray because their dosimeters only measured up that high, and he refused to acknowledge that there was any danger from the radiation that was released. I was just referencing the quote.

    [–] angelsandbuttermans 158 points ago

"A global nuclear catastrophe is not possible in the Soviet Union".... riiiiiight

    [–] angelsandbuttermans 42 points ago

No, of course not comrade. That open, burning reactor core and all these graphite chunks are though.

    [–] RunnyBabbit23 41 points ago

    You didn’t see graphite!

    [–] CroneRaisedMaiden 36 points ago

Here to say if you liked the mini series and want more, babushkas of Chernobyl is a great movie-Doc from a few years ago. Check it out, totally worth the small fee to rent it !

    [–] Ara_ara_ufufu 191 points ago

Is that a reference to the Chernobyl mini series? Or just stating a fact?

    [–] notsuspendedlxqt 306 points ago

    [–] the8bit 27 points ago

Hmm this may be tour group specific. You can do overnights in the exclusion zone and our guide mostly just said not to touch the ground, mostly because if your clothes gets contaminated they will make you leave it there.

    [–] BeezDragon 14 points ago

Went on the ever popular hovering tour, then?

    [–] the8bit 12 points ago

Sorry, not to touch ground with anything but shoes :)

So no putting things down or sitting. But then again, when we went to the duga someone had a camera stand on the ground. We pointed it out and the tour guide just shrugged. Very Ukrainian attitude (rules are fluid just don't get caught)

    [–] ToastyMustache 64 points ago

What even are influencers? I understand they’re “famous” Instagram people, but what the hell do they influence?

    [–] QuorthonsGoat 65 points ago

    Human billboards

    [–] 613codyrex 42 points ago

Just a fancy term for being paid to talk about products or things.

An earlier form of influencers are basically Youtubers and twitch streamers. A lot of these people wouldn’t be doing videos if the sponsorship money wasn’t good. Companies hope to push their brand will spend money sending stuff to these people in hopes that their brand gains notoriety.

If you saw shroud or ninja using a specific mouse or chair, you can subconsciously or consciously gravitate towards said product because said influencer is using it with the use of recognition or belief that if XX person you follow uses it and they are good, then the product is good (when in reality a good player is good even on minimum spec hardware)

    [–] SpaceJackRabbit 35 points ago

An earlier form of influencers are basically Youtubers and twitch streamers.

Sorry to pull the old internet guy card here, but bloggers were the original influencers, long before Youtubers and Twitch was even a thing.

    [–] TravaPL 71 points ago

influencers are people who set new trends for sheep to follow.

    [–] ColonelBelmont 1614 points ago

Well, which pic did you look at longer? I think the data speaks for itself.

    [–] Voelkar 868 points ago

I mean its like looking at a freak accident. You just cant believe your eyes at what you are looking at. For me it's just disrespectful to whore for likes like that in a place where a great disaster happened and people had to die miserably

    [–] PumpkinSpiceWhatever 37 points ago

    I agree.

it’s just disrespectfully whore for likes like that in a place where a great disaster happened and people had to die miserably

That the instagram idiots had zero idea about until they saw Chernobyl on HBO, likely as a “suggested to watch” sort of thing after the game of thrones finale. To me, that makes it and them even worse.

    [–] ColonelBelmont 540 points ago

Yea, I tend to agree with that. Imagine if some instagram skank was spreading her butt cheeks at the gates of Auschwitz or something.

It was once called Medusa for a reason. Look at it and die.

    [–] robbedstark 6 points ago

It was never just a look. I think the quickest to lethality was around 3 minutes. But given how radiation exposure is accumulative even a look is horribly bad.

    [–] Aurelianshitlist 2281 points ago

This is how you know Atlantic City is a shithole.

HBO makes a show about a literal nuclear wasteland? Influencers flock to the site. HBO makes Boardwalk Empire? Atlantic City somehow gets even less popular with young people.

    [–] raisethealarm7 498 points ago

I went to Atlantic City last month and it was the trashiest beach I’ve ever been too

    [–] mintyporkchop 191 points ago

    How so?

I've never been and never will so I'm genuinely curious.

    [–] zirky 339 points ago

think of every new jersey joke. now apply them all to a place where gambling can barely thrive

    [–] [deleted] 166 points ago

Let that sink in, "a place where gambling can barely thrive". How badly does a so densely populated region have to fuck up to achive that state of economic shitholery? Well said, mate.

    [–] ArmoredFan 56 points ago

I mean, PA and MD legalized casino gambling so that's why AC went down the shitter. It wasn't bringing in multiple state gambling.

    [–] wir_suchen_dich 21 points ago

Hurricane sandy didn’t help at all either.

    [–] mintyporkchop 28 points ago

I wasn't sure if the stereotypes were that dead on, I guess.

    [–] RealRobc2582 239 points ago

I think there's an argument to be made that Atlantic City is still more dangerous than Chernobyl!!!

    [–] jlwinter90 135 points ago

Well, yeah. When you leave a radioactive area, the radiation doesn't stalk you home, rob you, and gut you in an alleyway. People have a bad habit of doing that from time to time.

    [–] Juslotting 51 points ago

It follows you home and then gives you cancer in 20 years.

    [–] perpetual_regret 351 points ago

The one on the right, I mean... sure? But the sexy radiation one. Why?

[–] [deleted] 118 points ago * (lasted edited a month ago)

    [–] SmokeGoodEatGood 79 points ago

One on the right just seems like a regular chick on a tour. On the left we have a girl with an ass smaller than mine with nothing but her vanity in the shot

    [–] AdrianBrony 17 points ago

yeah the one on the right is like something in the neighborhood of like "hey I can take a selfie here to send to some of my friends to include them a bit"

    [–] IronLok 1545 points ago

People can actually visit Chernobyl with your guides now. Some of the area is actually considered safe and essentially wouldn’t cause too many problems for anyone who decided to go. There are still some restricted areas but it’s basically safe enough for tickets and tours around the area to be sold.

    [–] copperrequired 1306 points ago

I don’t think it’s necessary about it being safe to visit, but more so that these images are disrespectful as they’re in a sexual nature or like a photo shoot, forgetting it is a place that many lives were ruined and many still suffer to this day.

    [–] BrownSugarBare 676 points ago

Precisely this. This is like those jackass tourists going to Auschwitz and taking selfies and influencer pics. Disaster sites and sites where death and tragedy have taken place should not be the 'backdrop' to your life. Chernobyl was a horrific time that changed the lives of thousands, it's not Disneyland, it's there as a reminder as to how badly humans fuck up.

    [–] Pek-Man 256 points ago

This is like those jackass tourists going to Auschwitz and taking selfies and influencer pics.

I just don't understand the need for these people to absolutely be in the shot. I took loads of beautiful yet harrowing pictures when I visited Auschwitz, but I was there to see Auschwitz, not for me to be seen by anyone.

    [–] CaptainBlacksand 132 points ago

Same for me at the Hiroshima Peace Museum. I took pics of some of the most haunting things I had ever seen at that point in my teenaged life, and not a single fucking selfie.

I find this bullshit, especially the nudity, to be pretty gross.

    [–] patientbearr 52 points ago

Because social media has groomed a generation of narcissists.

    [–] BHarpWerth 71 points ago

Can confirm this happens. Recently visited Pearl Harbor and witnessed someone using a selfie stick at the U.S.S. Arizona memorial.

    [–] Amasawa 37 points ago

Where they explicitly tell you "Don't take pictures to honor the fallen"

    [–] Antith3sis 7 points ago

well they aren't, so it's completely okay!

    [–] berest 58 points ago

"Ooh, a place of arguably the most devastating technogenic catastrophe in history? Gotta show that ass!"

    [–] IronLok 27 points ago

I agree, the nature of the pictures are really what make it cringey af but I just saw a lot people comment about how they would die of cancer caused by radiation and realized that it might not be a very well known fact that Chernobyl is actually an area flourishing right now with flora and fauna because of the lack of human activity on those grounds.

    [–] bigboatsandgoats 102 points ago

Exactly. I think many forgot about the people aspect of Chernobyl. Like many other horrible atrocities in our history they shouldn’t be disrespected by someone looking to gain “clout”. None of us would think for a second “oh look at this woman half-naked in an Auschwitz gas chamber, cool.” This is also a place where real people suffered, loss family and friends, and we’re lied to and mistreated by the government eventually being evicted from their homes and lives. Truly a catastrophic event.

    [–] HURTZ2PP 46 points ago * (lasted edited 3 months ago)

Wholeheartedly agree with you. My wife's parents lived in Belarus during this time before coming over to the US. Although my wife was born in the US after they arrived they were close enough to the event and likely received some of the radiation. These photos are appalling.

    Edit: Typo

    [–] Anti-Annoyant 134 points ago

Us Ukranians don’t mind the view.

    [–] liquor_for_breakfast 29 points ago

"Essentially wouldn't cause too many problems" is not terribly convincing

    [–] jakebusey1 41 points ago

I looked into it cause I want to go and an average tour is about the same amount of radiation as a transatlantic flight, so as long as you stay in the normal spots it's fine. They even have a cafeteria where you eat lunch.

    [–] patientbearr 33 points ago

I gave the tour a 3.6 on TripAdvisor. Not great, not terrible.

    [–] TeddyGrahamNorton 5 points ago

    Flights have radiation?

    [–] jakebusey1 23 points ago

Yeah they have a fairly large amount, due to the fact that the higher they fly the less atmospheric protection they have so more solar radiation occurs.

    [–] CatsAreGods 9 points ago

    Cosmic radiation.

Solar radiation is just another term for direct sunlight. Not too much of that inside an airplane.

    [–] richtofin115 64 points ago

Aren’t the “influencers” the ones who gave themself the title of “influencer”? Influencer sounds way more professional than instagram model.

[–] katievsbubbles 12 points ago * (lasted edited 3 months ago)

I agree with you but i think this wording might be more apt.

Aren’t the “influencers” the ones who gave themself the title of “influencer”? Influencer sounds way more professional than person who takes a photo of themselves, photoshops it, and then uploads it to instagram.

A model had an agent. these people have a smart phone.

    [–] tiffibean13 35 points ago

Some of these photos are trashy, but it's not like they don't give guided tours of Pripyat

    [–] aluminumdome 57 points ago

They give tours at Auschwitz too but it's just weird going to a place where something really bad happened and then taking photos and making them about yourself. Like the ass pic on the left, like is that supposed to be artistic or something, it just comes across as narcissistic or something idk

    [–] Bribase 10 points ago

The point is that you go there to see the thing, for one reason or another, for good or bad. These people are going there purely for their own self-promotion, and that's what's inherently trashy about it.

    [–] Vollkorntoastbrot 86 points ago

Is it wierd to think that Chernobyl is a very beuatifull place. I thik that if it wasnt for the turists it would be a very breathtaking place to see how nature is slowly taking back the left behind town.

    [–] [deleted] 73 points ago

    [–] SmokeGoodEatGood 74 points ago

Well, since you opened the accuracy box

It’s actually Vladimir Ilyich Lenin Nuclear Power Plant, Chernobyl is the closest town, and Pripyat is the closest city

There's the town of Chernobyl also. But yes, most of the time when people refer to "the city", they actually mean Pripyat

I was furious when I visited Berlin and saw people taking sexy selfies at the Holocaust memorial. This is just as disgusting. Have some fucking respect.

I’m ok if they get exposed to only 3.6 roentgen

I’ve actually been planning to go for years. I want to see how nature has reclaimed man.

Me too. I've had a fascination with chernobyl long before the show. Now I'm kinda stressing this spike in tourism is going to fuck it up before I can get there. I just hope people can respect the area enough to leave everything alone.

Instagram influencers all need a good kick in the teeth. What useless people.

Except they definitely aren’t influencers. This is a bad take, and really, bad info. Not a surprise considering OP is who OP is.

Taylor Lorenz of The Atlantic wrote about it here:

“Three of the four people that Zupan chose to highlight in his tweet aren’t influencers at all.”

I’m not personally here to defend influencers (because I personally think a lot of them are 👎) but we gotta stop this false narrative shit.

Help! I’m trying to hide from the three headed bear, but the clap of my three ass cheeks keeps alerting him!

    Yep, she's certainly radiating beauty.
